Cracking the secret chest formula.
silvershock
Gaile Gray mentioned some time ago that there is a 'secret formula' which determines when a char will be able to re open chests.
I've noticed characters that are not being used that often will be able to open treasures sooner than characters you play on often.
My ranger and dervish were able to open the treasures again after +- a month since for the 3rd time. I Haven't played AT ALL on my dervish and played only 1 hour max on my ranger in the last month. My other characters were not able to open Treasures and strangely this is the 2nd this happened to me, that my more inactive chars were able to open the treasures sooner.
My guess is it has something to do with amount of time played on a character and/or the amount of gold items found with that character.
Couple of exaples for possible formula's:
Amount of time played on character devided by amount of gold items found.
The higher the score would be, the sooner you would be able to open your chests.
Example: A dervish char has been played on for 500 hours and found 23 gold items. Then the formula says: 500:23= 21.74 whereas a char which has been played on for 500 hours and found 73 golden items would have a score of 6.85 and would therefor have to wait longer.
Amount of golden items found on character devided by time played on character.
This is the formula i think could possibly be the real deal. The number that would come out would be be between 0.001 and 1. My theory is that the number which is displayed the extra time a character would have to wait besides a month to open the treasures.

Interesting.. so you mean to say you only use 1 char (mostly) for the pve and the rest are just pve chars who you use for pvp? If so, maybe a better formula would be number of golden items found on character devided by total amount of golden items found on all characters.. this way the characters which find less golden items get to open the treasures sooner than the others. this would also explain why non active characters would be able to open sooner than others.
Edit 2
From the info gathered, it might have something to with the overall playing time across all your characters since the last time you opened the treasures. This would explain why some people who are fairly active on other characters but have a couple of inactive chars are able to open the chests with their inactive chars sooner. The formula would then determine what chunk of the playing time for the last +- month that char has and if it deserves to open the chests again.
Another possibility would be the amount of wealth gathered by a character in the time since last openening chests. This is actually the best formula so far since it would explain why more active chars have to wait longer but sometimes this wouldnt be the case, it also explains why some people with fairly inactive chars have to wait long 2. Maybe they did just 1 farming trip and that triggered it.
I think the best way to make sure you can open all chests again is to play a fair amount of time across all your characters but without using that time to make a lot of money/gold items quickly.
Need to test that 1 out.
Well I could use all the help I can get to rule out possible formula's and find the answer to this 1, so plz post replies concering possible formula's or ruling out/confirming of existing possible formula's.
Ty in advance.

my only two characters who were able to open the free chests this last go around were the NF characters (derv and paragon). While they have been receiving about the same amount of playing time as any of the other characters since NF came out, they certainly have a lot less TOTAL playing time than my older characters.......supporting what you've said (this time around). For the previous two go arounds, all my chars were able to open all the chests at the same time.

To add something, I think you may be onto something, based on what I've gleaned from conversations with others. Maybe they want players who go and cap skills / open chests to be able to get the free treasures more often, than people who may rack up a lot of hours but don't do these things.

After the last time I was able to open all the chests with all of my characters I didn't go after any chests for over 2 months.
Last week I took them all to open the ROT chests and nobody could open them except for the paragon who I haven't played at all since the last trip to open chests. He was able to open all of the chests again.
My warrior gets most of my play time but the others minus the paragon still have had a decent amount of time playing as well.
No idea what if anything this means but maybe it can help you figure it out.

Okay, so maybe it's
(Extra Time until get Treasure) is proportional to (# of hours played) / (some measure of game activity).
This would handle the case of the subject who played 0 hours and was able to get the treasures. And I've talked with people that have not been able to find these treasures for 2+ months--they tended to be farmers / hang out selling stuff. Ergo, the "measure of game activity" would favor adventuring (capping skills, opening chests) over farming.
Or so I've heard.

I allways thought the system checked the characters /age. Atleast it seemed so because everytime my characters gained a number in months the chests would be recharged again. This also translates to the roughly 30 days observation.
The mentioned secret formula is most likely tied to the amount of junk those chests spill out. And basically it seems to be closely tied to the amount of rares you've had on that character since the last time you opened the chest. On my monk with which i've been farming got a barrage of purples and roughly 1 k from every chest. My warrior who has been chestrunning in the ROT got a barrage of purples and only 300-500 gold from chests. Even the two ROT Chests only gave 900 gold roughly.
My assassin and mesmer which I seldomly play interestingly enough still get lots of gold out of those chests.

I opened them all three times each on my 2 characters that went through NF, a friend of mine could do it on 2 characters as well, but not on the first one he tried...

Well I think this formula is flawed. My warrior who i played long enough to get thru nightfall right after release, has been dormant since. 2 to 3 months of not getting played. I have opened these chests 2 times. Now it has been 2+ months and I cannot open any of them any longer. Every one tells me empty, dig in dirt and find nothing,etc... Try to explain that one. hehe

I am assuming age also has something to do with chests refill rate. Since they wouldn't want people creating a bunch of mule chars for just opening treasure chests every month. Then again I guess people could get by that by just re-creating a bunch of chars over and over.
milan
This is assuming that the formula relates to just your characters or character as to when it can open chests. For all we know there are trigger times during the day and night that allowed everyone or certain professions to open the chests.

Well this one I would have to agree with. Now how do we prove it or disprove it? I know my main gold maker, and also my main PVE that makes lots of gold also cant open. My not played can about ever 45 days.

im not sure quite what to make of it...ive had two characters that have had a recent reset, which have been my warrior and ele, both of which i have been using for chestrunning and in DoA respectively. Now this seems to hold up the idea that its dependant on the number of gold items gained per char (i was running in FoW for the chests) but...my other chars who i havent played much, if at all, havent seen a reset since the first official one that was posted on wiki due to a main update. Where this leaves the theory of ratio of chests or golds/hours played i dunno...hope someone can make a little sense of this

Perhaps the time decreases if you play missions and quests?
Perhaps the time increases if you farm too much?

I tested the check and reset theory.
I have two characters that were opening chest at almost the exact same rate. I had character A test the chest earlier then when the chest should have been open. Then after the time had expired for the chest to be open I had character B test and got his reward, then took character A to chest and unable to open. Next month if both open A and B open same time then we may have proved the check and reset theory.

I just wish Anet would say what this forumla is supposed to be. I have a character thats been waiting well over a month now. At this point, I'm assuming its a bug, but since they have these arcane formulas, they can sluff off fixing it. Its a nice out to say, "Its working the way it should," when none of the players are completely sure what that is.

I find this applies to me also. I have opened all the "freebie chests" 3 times for 6 characters. Each character opened them on their own time frame, but opening them all per character during a single day. Keeping track of each individual character's time frame, it comes down to a basic month between intervals.
So each character could open all the chests again roughly a month later after the last time they opend the chests (30 day average, give or take). However, one thing i have noticed is that now after they all have opened the chests 3 times, it has been over 30 days past and they still cannot open the freeebies a 4rth time! Is 3 times the universal limit? Perhaps.
I just wish the chests didn't depreciate in drop item values either. By the time all my chars got to their 3rd runs, they got about 60% purple drops. Sad.
Anywhoo, just my take on the whole "secret chest formula", boiling down to a simple time frame idea...
cheers.

There are 12 of them in Elona/Torment. Search guildwiki.org for hidden treasure and you'll have all the answers. =)

I think whoever made this chest formula had a sense of humour. I salute them. Are you serious? Don't ya think you should tell us, so we could all appreciate the humor of the ANet devs together?
My "proper research" availability has been suspended due to the fact that every time I have gone out to try a chest (which I have not done in a month, I'm waiting to do the "check and reset" test), after 3rd on each character, it's been empty.
Either you're putting us on, or you're mean! lol jk

Ok considering what Miss Persephone said, maybe it has something to do with the names of the chests and/or areas they're in and/or something more, plus put all that into a context of some popular story/movie/book (GW is full of references to series, various famous movies, manga, etc). And it might come up with a formula for the proper order to open chests.
From what I noticed is that the first chests I opened in my third go around were always golds (and had more gold coins than what I expected from that chest), then they started deteriorating to ruby/saphire/diamond or straight to purples and less gold than expected from that chest. To make this less confusing here's an example:
On my third go on a charr (think it was rit) I opened in the order from the low level areas to the high level areas. The ones on noob island had a gold item in it and around 800-900 gold (which is more than the 500 or so I came to expect from my first two runs). The ones later on started having less gold coins and droping more purples, ending up with purples and around 600-800 gold from Torment chests (the previous two runs had around 2.3-3k in these).
On my third go on another charr (Derv) I started from Torment and got golds and about 3k there and ended with noob island (200-300 gold, purple items).
My conclusion so far is the more often u open with the chars u get more purples and get them from the chests opened later on. My newest charr (/age about 3 weeks) had her first run (opened the chests in no real order) and got all gold items and the gold coin amounts comparable to those I had during the first run with my other charrs.

Interesting ^^
But the beef most people have with the chests, is not the stuff inside, it's the ability to reopen at all, which some people do not have (OR have tested it too soon and had the timer reset, or whatever the heck).
Actually, that's the only formula which interests me personally... can't speak for others.

Hello Its me - I was the newb who asked what these chests were But after a quick run round I opened my first two hidden chests in the Realm of Torment (the one in jahai took me ages to find - actually cleared entire map of enimies in process) Just in cas eany1 wants to start a research project my two chests yeilded me both golds (a scythe (poor) and a spear (not bad)) and 3700g a piece. Il go after the next ones down so to speak sometime soon and tell you what those got me too.

Well from what I have seen: All chests reset 30 days after the last time you attempted to open any. So if you open them on the 15th, and try to open the one outside Kodash 29 days later, you wont be able to open any for another 30 days. And this is per character, not account.
Mournblade
I'll be testing that Friday Hell Raiser. I've kept a chart of all my characters and when they've opened each chest. According to this theory I should have a whole lotta treasure soon. (Friday will be 31 days since any of my 5 chest opening characters have touched a chest)
Cymmina
My Dervish, 3rd time opening the chests (last time was April 1st or 2nd). Opened in order, except for Mirror of Lyss, which I did first. This character is barely played (only did a couple missions since the previous opening).

There's a posibility that the longer you let the chests "recharge", the higher your odds will be that you will get a gold instead of a purple. I don't remember the first time I opened my treasures, but I think close to 2 months had passed and my second run was at least 80% gold.

Honestly, I believe that to open a chest, you can't open it for exactly 1 month. You can't even touch it for 1 whole month's time. If you touch it 20 days into the month, it resets. Try that theory out. I'm not at all sure but it seems kind of likely to me. Don't know why...

Ok, here's my results after a 31 day wait:
Tyrian Elementalist: could open her available chests again (8)
Tyrian Necro: could open her available chests again (2)
Elonian Dervish: could open her available chests again (2)
Tyrian Ranger: could NOT open her available chests again *0*
Tyrian Warrior: gonna wait a few more days and try. I hate to have to wait another 31 days if I screw something up. :P
So I don't know what the heck is up now. My ranger and warrior are the two who are completely finished with the game and can access all of the chests. So of course those are the ones i'm having trouble with re-opening. *sigh*

Guys, I thought it was really bloody obvious from my last post about the chest openings how to get them as often as possible, but obviously not.
How would you guys like me to prove the formula? I can't provide some magic piece of proof that it works, there is no such thing. You want me to screeny everytime I open a chest with all my stats shown and the date or something?
I already said twice that I did all the testing for fun, and I'm not trying to keep some secret formula to myself. I was trying to dispel some of the speculation about requirements for re opening chests, but not giving it away 100% so other people could have fun finding it out too. Actually, I wish I had never posted to try help you people out. I thought I was being helpful, especially in my last post, but whatever. FFS its a game. I won't be checking this thread or helping crack this formula for anyone anymore. GG all.

I recorded everything, so I guess now I just have to wait 35 days and see. :P

But does the time reset if you open a chest before the chest has reset?

Yes. My Tyrian Ranger's experience supports that theory. I think if I had waited another two days, like I did with my Warrior, I could have opened all of the chests with her. :P
