Melonni (Ele's hero)
Mission failed because ele had Melonni set to fight and he kept targetting everything and off Melonni went and aggroed too much.
The real horror story...the ele player was not capable of comprehending what went wrong no matter what we did to try and explain.
He refused to set Melonni to guard mode and said hard mode was...yes...too hard.

Farmed my way to conquering commander (wich should be renamed "conquering lightbringer"!) And that's all i do with hard mode for a wile. First protector, then guardian.
Guardian of the Light
I was teamed up with an MM, SS nerco and a Monk (I was a ranger) to do Ruins of Surmia. We decided to use minions and my pet to try to tank instead of bringing a tank. The minions worked well and we didn't die but rurik the aggro machine had other plans.
So at the very end we run into a group of 3 Char Shamans. No big deal we slowly try to kill them. The problem is that they came from behind us and Rurik decided to run towards the gate. I notice 3 red dots move across the map and then text "OMG RURIK!". We try to kill the shamans but they refuse to die (damn SoJ). So once rurik starts taking damage I run towards rurik and start pinging my teamates to come. I arrive attack the 3 mesmers and later my monk comes and heals the idiot and then we kill all the charr defeat the last waves and beat the mission .

Clearing Mirror of Lyss.
I was around 150 and thought I had everything, but there was something more... In the southern part of the map, I found a Kournan mob with a paragon boss and a Margonite cleric, along with a non-boss paragon and several zealots.
To keep it short, eighteen 4-leaf clovers later, I cleared the map.
Also, I found a monk boss in Cliffs of Dohjok who I still haven't been able to kill. Keshel the Voracious. Seemingly unlimited 100-point reversals of damage own heroes! I'll have to go back with a build just for him (the rest of the area is pretty easy).

Managed to vanquish 8 canthan areas so far although I tried Minister Cho's Estate - that one's going to be nasty.
Xaquang Skyway was interesting. We'd cleared out most of it and met lvl 30 Ghial with his lvl 32 Flesh Golem!! After that we toddled on round to Orosen who has fled his usual hiding spot and we found him lingering outside Senji's Corner. We managed to nuke him pretty good only, before he died, he managed to get off a Channeled Strike which killed my brother who was monking, who also had 6% morale boost, in one hit. Ouch.
The Ruins of Surmia was a pain. The first time I got the bonus and lowered the bridge for Rurik who promptly went and aggroed as much as possible so we died. The second time we cleared everything out the back then let Rurik through...SOMEHOW Rurik backtracked and found MORE Charr...although silly us, we thought he was following us. We fled back to try to find him and Dunkoro JUST got a Shield of Regeneration off with seconds to spare. MORAL OF THE STORY: Rurik is STUPID.
Tried Thunderhead Keep. It was pretty easy up to the Jade Armors who come up for the bonus. They were HARSH. I think some re-thinking will be required for that mission. Vizunah Square saw us get wiped in the third room...the one where the three rits waddle down the steps at the top to res everything.
The Mirror of Lyss was pretty easy...just followed my usual rule of "set up spirits > lure > chain knock-downs". The only thing that gave me trouble here was the Margonite Paragon Boss' group...that took 3 party-wipes to kill, other than that, no deaths at all.
Imo the key to completing hard mode is Razah with Earthbind + Protective Spirits, Lots of knockdowns either from eles or hammer warriors, Norgu with Mantra of Recovery + Power Return...and a little creative luring.
Still enjoying it so far

Did Tahnnakai (think that's the name) temple with 4 guildies and a guildie's friend.
After some time, we face a mob, and get whiped. Big mob of afflicted. Only I, on my ritualist, a n/me and a monk survive. (I think). I try to rez some people, but get aggroed, and die. The n/me and the monk start killing the guys I aggroed, one by one. Lastly, they finally kill the ritualist and monk (the n/me was spiteful spirit with backfire). They go to the ritualist boss, who's a pure healer, and manage to take him down after a long time, recharging the necro's signet, so I could be rezzed again.
After killing the rit boss again (spirit of restoration) we proceeded to slaughter Vizu.
The alkali pan is also pretty horrible. In the Southwest area, there's a huge group of undead, with no wurm accessibility. They're freaking invincible.

I hate to admit it, but the worst part for me so far in Jokunar Diggings in Hard Mode. I done Consulate Docks with no trouble, but this is a different matter.
The real problem is that you HAVE to take Melonni and she really is the weakest link.
After three total party wipes and having got no further than the first part of the first city i gave up for the night.
With a four person party cap and one of them having to be Melonni, its hard to make a balanced party.
I was doing this with my ranger, my main character. Any suggestion would be appreciated.
The party consisted of Ranger, SF Ele, Healer Monk and unfortunately Melonni.

No doubt, there are some areas which devs haven't thought through because the mobs might not be suitable for hench aggroing.. But then again you should use human players...

... I set foot into Minister Cho's Estate.... and saw that the bog-standard enemies there were moving at least as fast as I was when I used Dash.
At that point I decided it was wholly retarded and Rage-Quit (albeit from a party of Heroes, so nobody else was there to care).
A few new skills I can tolerate... but just amping the enemy raw abilities into the stratosphere? ... Inacceptable.

It's simple logic that if monsters get buffed NPCs will need to be proportionately buffed as well. Making them level 20 isn't enough if they're facing level 23 monsters with elites, super-casting times, etc. Rurik was Level 10 in Ruins of Surmia which was at least two levels higher than any other non-boss, so really he should be Level 28 or some such if you use proportional scaling, with some decent special skills. However I think the devs got too excited and didn't think that one through.
I hope ANet restores my faith in them by putting their hands up and admitting they made a mistake, whether that's by direct comment and by fixing hard mode and making it more "fun challenging" and less irritatingly difficult or indirectly by just fixing it. I suggest they try the following:
1. Ensure NPCs can stay up at least almost as well as they can in normal mode, whether that's through buffs, skills, whatever.
2. Remove monster buffs like super-fast casting. Maybe give them a small movement bonus, or something. Also scale level increases more gently. I don't think monsters should be more than level 20 in the four-people areas. Give some of them secondary professions, or something. Also remove elites from non-bosses apart from end-game areas (otherwise it spoils the game if all monsters can use them).
3. Make heroes and henchmen more intelligent - e.g. bring back kiting.

Some of us just aren't amazingly talented enough to survive regularly in Hard Mode, no matter how much we might want to. The terrible Hero / Henchie / NPC AI makes things exponentially worse... but even without that it is horribly difficult for some..... and it turns out we don't even have the option of trying to grind it as a last resort. Simple effort alone will not suffice with hard mode.... as only the elite survive while everyone else falls behind.
You know what this is?

Hmm didn't it dawn to you people that hard mode might not be suited for hero/hench in the first place?
It looks to me like an attempt to re-vamp PUGing, and a pretty successful one to. Look at it from my side, I lost interest in a good part of PvE because the only people still looking for teams were stragglers that couldn't do the job without heroes. You don't want players like that in your team, because theyre really bad mostly. My idea of fun is doing a job while the rest of the team does theirs, micromanaging 7 henchmen is not my idea of fun. I get kicks out of teaming up, but apart from guild groups that take me along, overall team quality is horrid. I welcome hard mode with open arms, because I finally have the opportunity to team up with good people again .

I can agree to some extend with you Bungusmaximus, but it could have been achieved differently, and it should be considered that not everyone might have the time to do HM, sometimes IRL asks them to put aside GW for a bit, and in a PUG this is usually not very welcome.
Furthermore, if most move to HM, also bad players will move to HM, I already have experienced a few that don't know how to kite, or even effectively use skills. Not only good players migrated but also bad ones.

Been having a blast. Dragons Gullet was by far the worst defeat... We cleared Flame Corridor easily with 2 Elementalists and 2 Ritualists, but lacked... err, protection against the Hydras in Dragons Gullet . I know at least that i wont forget to bring Shelter on my second try though.
D'Alessio Seaboard was also difficult. After about 3 failed attempts we had success. Those AI can have some good timing with their earthquake spike! I'm dreading some of the missions we have not done yet... especially missions like Vizunah Square! O what fun

I can already tell you Vizunah is HAXXXX, any good tips on beating that one are greatly appreciated. I can bodyblock with either minions or pets in most regular missions, but in Vizunah mobs come from every direction and just rape me. BHA spike sucks as hell on my healers :P. Maybe spirits/wards or whatever? Oh, and let the first one to complete Eternal Grove on HM please speak .

And don't say "oh, you just need to tell him not to". People are stupid, people make mistakes, they get lag, etc. So if anything Hard Mode is making it LESS LIKELY for people to take PUGs, because they won't want to risk some noob warrior fcuking it up for them. People will rely on guildies, hope that they can get a hero build that works or simply not do it.
Patrick Smit is right. HM is making it much more difficult for some people, because the morons, noobs and gits are trying it as well.

I have a serious feeling the devs didn't bother playing through the missions on hard mode to see what they were like (if they did, only briefly), just threw in the changes and assumed they'd be fine.

I believe that HM is doable with hench anyway, but try to get masters reward with them and you will get shafted :P I'm currently trying HM with henchies but I get expert reward at best. I only managed to get masters at minister cho's estate, but that one is still cake. But heck, I'm not even sure anymore if I still get your point, I might be miles beside it.

cleared 123 enemies in gandara only to find a kournan guard very out of radius in an unrechable spot, gg.
other than that rest of game has been a breeze when my friend and I weren't completely joking around, N/Rt's pwn hard mode, and when they get nerfed, well, I regard HM as "bring prot spirit mode" anyway.

You obviously don't read what people have to say, because anyone would know that there is nothing you can do if your mission-crucial NPC decides to super-aggro several groups of enemies or will not follow you to a safer area in the 4-man areas. The best monk is still going to drown when those enemies decide he's a tastier target - or simply runs out of energy because that NPC is being attacked by so many monsters at once.
You do not have the right to dismiss anyone who has argued for HM being modified as "not up for the challenge". I suggest you rethink your attitude.

There is no way in hell i'm gonna pug ANYTHING in hard mode. I'm not prepared to get through half an area to find out 1 of them didn't even have enough time to finish. Or that 1 of them is a complete prick and ragequits after 1 party wipe.
Its all Heros, Hench and the Alliance from here on out.
