Meh, as someone said...a gift's a gift. It's certainly not mandatory that they give us something, but it's just odd that they are knowingly giving us something that no one really wants. Maybe the people on this board are the minority, and the noobs that hang out in shing jea all day speak for the GW community as a whole. Because that's sure what it seems like. I'll accept the gift, if it's not super cool, customized, and the demand is high, I'll sell it, and pretend that my 2nd birthday gift is a few plat, instead. Too bad I didn't get the game til a few weeks after it came out, so the price will go down

It is a gift but not received by us but by our characters. Our characters never paid anything for the mini pet it is a gift to them for being 1 year old.
Also the whole logic behind the idea of a birthday present is that it is a gift for each year of existance.

I'm finding it really bizzare how some people are going to great lengths to try and prove that this is not a gift. Does it really matter? If you are unhappy about this gift then fine state your opinion but whether it is a gift or not is really irrelevant.

Anyway I'm happy with the mini pet birthday present, I'm not a big collector but enjoy the surprise in which one I will get. Thanks Anet

Yeah, ok. then i guess what you said is worthless too, since it's "electrons"

Anyways. I'm excited that ANET made a cool even for the 2nd year. I'm excited that they give use birthday presents. I was excited to hear that the 2nd year's presents were going to be even better. I guess I'm kinda confused and bummed that we are getting more minipets. I don't think of it as "I deserve a better present" I'm just disappointed that they couldn't/didn't implement something more unique for 2nd year characters. With every pole I saw minis were closer to the bottom than the top, seems odd that they would go with them. I'm guessing it's not worth the time, they have a TON of work to do for GW:EN & GW2.

I still think there is something about the minis they aren't telling us. Something they do or whatever... dunno.

I'm just glad that the presents aren't customized. I have a habit of deleting and remaking my characters, so I don't think anyone of them has reached even six months of age. Currently my main character is three days old!

Back when my account reached one year of age, I bought my main character an unopened present and I've been happy with the Charr Shaman I got ever since. It'll be many months until my account is two years old, but when it happens, I'll be buying one of those unopened presents again.

After opening the frontpage of guildwars.com I am almost positive that a Blue Djinn is going to be the minipet. Just my 2 cents. :P

I wish I had known when I had deleted my oldest character that I was throwing away two 100k + ecto birthday presents... *sigh*

I feel sorry for the one year old canthan characters though, getting the worthless old minis.

I'm still looking forward to the new minis. I'll buy them when they're dirt cheap

There should be a present which uninstalls your existing installation and bans you for life if you happen to be one of these spoilt infantile complainers. I think that would be a cool addition to the minipets.

"Hey look, I got a cyoute cyoute mini-gwen"

"Wtf man lolz, me got a present too, phuck d'em Ahh-Net azzholz and deir minis"

The thing is, as I said before, Gaile led us to believe last year that the second birthday present would be something different. I'm sure if you went through the Game & Dev Tracker forum, you'd be able to find the exact quote. But if you can find an effective way to search GWG posts from a year ago, more power to you.

I don't want this point to be forgotten amidst all the people telling us that we should be happy with what we get.

More like, getting a second car when you got one last year and never even drove around with that one.

Was hoping for some disguises that can be toggled (like the Everlasting Beetle Tonic), but meh... better than nothing, I suppose.

I've an old aunt who's been giving me a ties for my birthdays for years. They're nice ties, and even though I don't wear ties, I still love her.

The moral of this story? No idea, but at least minipets are easier to sell than ties.

One of the things that always had a personal touch with Guild Wars for me is that it shares the same birthday as myself, April 28th. It just adds a little bit more to the day for me and with the cakes and presents this year, it should add a nice special touch to the day Oh, and to add irony to it, Nightfall shares my wifes b-day, October 27th but she's not a gamer so she could care less.

YAY! AFK WEEKEND!

I just hope the tickets I accumulated LAST board-walk weekend are still valid.... or else I will have wasted a whole shedload of money (I bought 100k of them).... Token Storage Stan finally gets a bit of his inventory freed up! ...

And with any luck, maybe I'll be able to get my Unlucky title to rank 3 ... [and possibly get the first rank of Lucky, since it actually has a purpose now... ¬_¬]...

O'course we'd need about 10 of these weekends for me to max my Unlucky title track.... annoyingly enough. v_v; .... We just don't get enough oppurtunities any more.

how come you just don't sell them to the merchant? their buy/sell prices are the same. 15 gold to buy, 15 gold to sell back.

*Shrugs* ... No idea really.
I just bought too many and figured I might as well hold onto them until the next event rather than having to destock and restock. I made a special PvP Paragon just to store them...

Token Storage Stan is SO gay. ^_^

[He also has quite a few Lunar Tokens left over from the Pig-day event... and I have NO idea what to do with those.]

Of course additions they make to the game are to keep us happy and wanting to play the game. There's no question about that. Mini-pets are no different. But they are still gifts because there's no requirement that they give us anything for our characters becoming a year older. They could spend the money/resources on other things, but still they choose to give us birthday presents and acknowledge our support of their game.

The fact that someone got paid to make the code doesn't mean anything. Companies give their products away as gifts to events and charities all the time. This doesn't lessen the value of the gift because they had to pay their employees to make them. Even people give gifts to their friends and family with other meanings than just to show that they love and care for them; not only do they get the satisfaction of the receiver liking the gift, it also means that the receiver continues to like the person that gave the gift.

If mini-pets are what people didn't ask for, then yes I agree it's kind of sad that that's what we're getting. But again, it's a gift, and I appreciate the fact that they do anything for us. The fact that it couldn't be purchased by others has benefits and drawbacks. The last thing I want is to be stuck with a gift that I didn't vote for on one of their polls, or just didn't want. Selling the mini-pets is like returning a gift at a store (in theory). I don't feel any shame or insult to ANet when I do it. I appreciate that they gave me something, but if they aren't going to get me what I personally like (impossible to do considering the thousands of subscribers) then I have all the right to trade it for something I do want. If I don't keep the mini-pet, then they're providing me with the means to help obtain something I do want for my character's birthday.

Is that your contention? That I have no right to be disappointed? Or that I have no right to express that disappointment?

If you do, I just might have to make a judgement of my own.
Don't interpret my words for your own pleasure of playing the hurt victim here. No where did I say you had no right to be disappointed or had no right to express your disappointment. No where did I mention that no one has the right to be disappointed. I merely argued your reason and logic for saying these weren't gifts.

I myself am disappointed that it's mini-pets because I'm not a fan of them really, but I'm not going to through temper-tantrums on a fansite forum to let everyone else know this (not saying that's you, but I am saying that it's some of the over-dramatic people on here). I only have two mini-pets: the very first one I received, a Jade Armor, cause it kind of has sentimental meaning since it was the first, and a Temple Guardian that I traded my Necrid Horseman for. I've never bought any others because I don't really like any of them (besides the ones Asia got).

And yet I'm not disappointed. I kind of like the birthday presents to all be the same thing (mini-pets) and have different series for each year celebrated. It gives it consistency. And like I said before, if I don't like the present, then ANet has provided me a way of getting some extra money to go and get something I do want. Of course, with my luck, I'll probably get the boring ones again :/

From Dictionary.com:

gift
-noun
1. something given voluntarily without payment in return, as to show favor toward someone, honor an occasion, or make a gesture of assistance; present.

The minipet is not given voluntarily -- someone recieved a small portion of the money I and you spent on the product to write the code that causes a minipet to appear in the inventory of our character.
I would beg to differ... the minipet is indeed given voluntarily. The coders of which you speak were not given money to produce minipets. They receive a salary and received a directive from the company to produce these items as gifts rather than work on products that would increase company revenues. The company ordered the creation of the gifts at the expense of other products, and did to willingly and voluntarily. Who they had do it is actually irrelevant... there's practically always someone getting paid somehow for every 'gift' produced.

The gift is from ANet, not the programmers.

Relax folks, for all we know, we could be getting new minis that never seen before and won't be offered to anyone unless they're on their 2nd birthday. Beside, it's the company's decision to make mini pets for the 2nd birthday.

Just be happy that we're getting something for keeping our characters this long for over two years.

IMHO these 2nd year minis only cater to a small group. They do not make new players want them because they have absolutely no value by the time a new player can get them.

I feel sorry for the people who supported Factions (a stand alone game ) from day one and will most likely only get a pet they could buy for 5-10K

and then the people who supported Nightfall ( a stand alone game) from day one who by the time they get their first mini pet B-day present will find there are so many everywhere they have no value whatsoever.

Personally I believe on a yearly note the mini's should be retired and a new set become available, thus preserving a sense of something special in what everyone receives, not just a few thousand out of millions.

I think by 'scrolls and letters' he means forum posts and screen shots. Don't think there will be a title.

Also, guys c'mon, it's a gift and if you think the game is lesser because you didn't get what you wanted for a 2nd birthday then go play something else and maybe grow up a little while you're at it.

I for one am quite pleased with new mini pets as I think they are a fun little addition to the game

Illumination could possibly mean some kind of aura like Bambi? Yes, no, maybe?

I'm thankful anything really, I think it's fun. As far as the mini goes, I think that's cool too, if you don't want it clogging storage, sell it. As previous posters have mentioned, quit crying about what you are GETTING, how many video games actually go out of their way for special things like this?

I love what someone said about comparing the complainers to spoiled brats who get a car for their b-day but cry about it being the wrong color.

How bout instead of talking about what is considered a gift or not, some1 care to ponder what they think the mini will be? a special aura or special "illumination"?

I think its gonna be a storm djinn. That would be sweet.

I won't make any assumptions about Anet's other updates. However, I won't sit back and keep my mouth shut about 2 year presents.

Congrats, you've helped make Guild Wars an awesome game by supporting it for the past two years, buying all campaigns, etc. We're going to give you something very cool. A generic Mini-Pet that you can just trade to someone who's willing to fork the dough over.

As a two year vet and active player of Guild Wars, I'm insulted. I was really hoping for something more substantial. I've been a dedicated player and I was hoping Anet would be a bit more thankful than to say "hey, here's ANOTHER mini-pet".

Did Gaile not see the post about 2 year present ideas. I remember reading the thread thinking, "wow, other people don't want mini-pets either, GREAT".

Anyway, to the point of the matter:

A unique TWO YEAR title, or "Guild Wars Vet" some kind of silly "only two year players get one" gift should be added. Something that's not tradeable. Something that shows the community how dedicated you are. That's my suggestion. I'm opening it up to anyone else who's insulted by the presents (mini-pets), as well as CONSTRUCTIVE ideas about what should've been done. I don't see adding a title as difficult. They can add pets based on creation date, why not make an account wide title/aura/ SOMETHING.! Thanks!
