I'm bored.
Zinger314
After spending all of yesterday solo-farming for Birthday Cakes and items, I realized...why do I continually roll a rock up a mountain just so it can fall down? (Hi, Sysphisus!)
I had originally left Guild Wars for World of Warcraft several months ago, as I was bored then. Since that didn't go over so well (I was unable to start on an established server...and they haven't release any new servers), I looked back into Guild Wars.
After the announcement that Hard Mode would be released, I became giddy. I spent a month refamiliarizing myself with my character and gearing up my Heroes.
But when Hard Mode was released...it wasn't that eventful. I wanted to get Guardian everywhere. Yet, on most missions, it's impossible unless you have humans as half your party. Unfortunately, when everyone is spread across 56 missions, it's hard to get 8 people, let alone 6. From what I can tell, everyone is stuck on the Ascalon Missions and won't try anything else...
Hard Mode is a gimmick. ArenaNet pronmised intelligent and efficient AI; they just boosted the attributes by a ton and multiplied the attack and casting speed. The only skill modification they made was to the sub-20 Enemies by giving them Elites. I expected more.
ArenaNet said that they would be releasing Sunspear skills which were PvE only and class unique. Many thought that they would be with the HM update. Unless that skill makes me God for XX seconds, it won't matter. Many people are still pressed for their 8 slots as it is. I'm a little dissappointed that we haven;t heard anything about these skills. If it turns out that HM was tested with these skills...I will be annoyed.
So, without PvE on my Necromancer, what else is there to do?
*Assist others through Normal Mode Missions: I helped an Assassin through Arborstone last night. I had to fight with him to use Eve has a Henchman, as opposed to his lv. 13 Sousuke and a third Monk. And during the mission, he was drawing on the map, telling me where to go! Sadly, that was one of the lesser jerks I've met. I still have people Whispering me to help with every single mission. It's annoying. While many people have been graceful and courteous (i.e. the people who responded to my thread at Guru), many others have been rude, and therefore it isn't worthwhile.
*Start another character: I tried starting an Elementalist and continuing my Ritualist and Ranger. Yet...they all killed significantly slower in groups than almost any build my Necromancer can play. In World of Warcraft, there's a huge difference when playing different classes, as you are primarily solo. In Guild Wars, you are always a part of a group, so your individual effectiveness will be minimized. Plus, I do not want to regrind Sunspear and Lightbringer...
*Farm for FoW Armor: Female Necromancer Vabbian > FoW Armor. Case closed.
*PvP: Believe it or not, I'm actually Rank 4. And I hated it. What's the point? The only point to Heroes Ascent is to get more fame. (Again, hello Sysphisus)
GvG is somewhat the same way. You can get to the top 100 on the ladder...but it doesn't matter unless you are top 32. And obviously, I couldn't accomplish either.
And I'm 17. I can't really HA/GvG all night consistantly; Schoolwork comes first.
What can I do to extend my Guild Wars life? I guess Pokemon Diamond was just released...

Seems like you gave up on othe class development already. You really shuldnt measure "fun" by kiling speed, especially if you are expert necro and novice on other one.
Dont let yourself get intimidated by regrinding stupid stuff (lb is not required, sunspear only for home character), play REALLY different character, meele - not ranged, true support, not damage dealers. If you have predjustige against warriors, take it away and try one. And play for fun. sigh.
you for sure have mule slots that you can sacrifice for couple of characters of each class. you will find one you like besides necroes.
~~~
or just stop playing gw and following forums (without bibi threads), duh, simplest thing you can do.
This game is huge and sometimes hard to find people to group with. For the most part if you can't find people to do the things you need, then join a more focused guild. If you want to find people that are doing vanquisher titles join a guild dedicated to that.
P.S. - WoW sucks.
More frustration than it's worth is another thing though... you basically have to build completely against many areas to stand a chance, and you only learn this through trial and error against the many new skills and quirks that aren't on wiki yet. In some areas you have to carefully flag henchies while you make pulls instead of charging in with guns blazing. (Especially annoying to flag a bonder behind everyone else) It can start to feel a bit like DoA, which probably isn't a good thing.
My advice? Wait for Granado Espada. Once that game hits the Open Beta (in the coming may) GW is history for me. Basically every game comes to an end sooner or later but interestingly enough GW is the only game where quitting it is highly encouraged.
The problem with Guildwars in PVE is that it is allways the same. Even with the so called hardmode the missions are just as easy as ever only that the mobs hit slightly harder. But the same things that allways worked still work. Elite Missions are still the same old "Tank'n Nuke" Nonsense. And doing Guardian on one of my characters I realized one thing: There was a fricking reason I could not get myself to create another character.
It's the one dimensional structure of Guildwars. You really have just one way to go, you really only can do the very same things again and again and again. In most missions you even have a set path you must walk with no options at all. I'm not asking for 3D movement here but something more than a fixed Go-Kart Area with a fixed way of solving potential obstacles (seriously, requiring corpse exploitation in Urgoz to even fricking proceed? We found out the hard way when the whole trip came to a sudden stop. :X)
I'm rather bored with GW these days as well... you're definitely not alone. All I've been doing for the past week or so is playing through Nightfall with my Dervish and capping elites. I honestly don't feel like doing much more than that, and I only have 2 elites left to cap on him. What next?
I also think Anet missed the boat on hardmode. I, too, was excited about, but have only played it a few times since it came out because I think it's crap. More intelligent AI with better skillbars is one thing, and what I was expecting, but the boosted attack and casting speed is retarded, and I think unfair as well. If they can have a constant boost to attack and magic speed, we should too.
I'm also not a huge fan of PvP, so that's out for me as well.
Like you, Zinger, I've also been running around assisting people who are new to the game, and while I don't mind doing that, some of the people milk it for all it's worth, ask me for money so they can buy armor like I have, and then become rather ungrateful for the help they received when I say no. I just have to tell them, I worked very hard for my armor's and have played this game a very long time... to which they get angry and seem to forget I just helped them get through most of a campaign just because I'm being nice. Argh!
Anyway, this kinda turned into a rant, and I apologize for that as I don't usually rant, but this is how I've been feeling the last few weeks. I just wanted to say I'm with you on this one Zinger.
To Zinger and for help in solving your Guild Wars boredom,
...um...
Dunno. I'm playing a mix of Neverwinter Nights 2 and WoW at the moment. NWN2 is okay, so far. I'll tell more about that later.
As for Guild Wars, dunno. I'm just messing with FA Kurzick at the moment.
I agree that Hard Mode is not what I hyped it up to be, not to mention it's not what ANet said it'd be. It's also just pretty boring. Once I get the right build for the area, no strategy involved at all.
Hard most lost it's appeal very quickly imo. The HM mish's seem to be void of good players that cant put together a skill bar effective enough to beat a lot of these mish's. When people get tired of mish's failing, it seems as if they give up entirely.
Hard mode and vanquishing area's is really the only thing that is keeping my interest in GW at the moment. I've farmed all that I care to, I've done DoA to the point that I cant stay awake during a foundry run and I'm tired of grinding any more of my remaining toons through NF. But after 2 years, I've lasted way longer than most people that I've gotten to know in the game.
Taking little breaks here and there does help but the bottom line is... when the game just doesnt offer you anymore entertainment then it's time to either wait for an expansion/new chapter or find another game to play.
Sword of the New World is actually the version where I don't wanna be. Lower version of the game with many features not implemented. And as the real version of GE does not IP Ban other countries i'll be there.
/edit:
Actually I've allready played Granado Espada in the Closed Beta that ended a few weeks ago. It is indeed as great as it is pretty. It's also a bit grindy but rather weak grind (not as mind numbing as Lightbringer or Sunspear).
The best thing Anet can do now, IMO, is make the hero and henchman AI stop completely sucking. Hard mode may actually be fun if you can... you know... play it. Seeing how the AI is ridiculously stupid and real people are hard to come by. Also of course, Anet decided to be boring instead of creative and just give the monsters huge buffs... no strategy needed, hooray for Build Wars.
Hey, that Granado Espada looks awesome, thanks for mentioning it (hellgate wont be replacement for me because devs think that grinding to top level is fun and that you should not be able to respec your character in any other way than by rectearing it)
Really if you bring a hero or 2 with prot spirt it makes hard mode a whole lot easyer. After trying to vanquish some zones without and then bringing it it makes some bosses and hard groups alot easyer, eg ruby djins and the invoke lightning bosses.
. . . I picked up Pokemon Pearl the other day. It's very fun and nostalgic.
i guess you can say i was like you last year when i was 17. i started getting bored with gw so i tried WoW... quit after a week. then i went back to gw joined top 100 guild, got rank 4. then i tried helping anyone who would needed anything, but at the end nothing was able to get into the game the way i used to be when i just bought propehcies. now gw is something i do for 20-30 minutes every other day just to see whats up.
my advice to you: your 17, go out more and concentrate on colleges and hang out with all the friends you have... and start DATING!!! soon before you know it your leaving for college. im leaving for the air force academy in like 2 months and i regret not having enough time for these girls who just started popping into my life in a span of 6 months . so yea if your bored now, i'd say to let it be and just get out more before going away to college becomes an issue.
I have to admit that I had a good initial impression of HM when it first came out since I played it mostly in early ascalon where there were smaller groups of enemies, but later areas in HM are quite a disappointment. Now it's just a good place to farm dead bows and sephis axes to me, lol.
I can (and I am sure others here do as well) get pretty obsessive about a game and trying to do everything, see everything, get everything as soon as possible. That leads to many many hours playing for days on end. Eventually you will get sick of it. Its taken you (and me) 2 full years to get there, but it has finally caught up to you. Sure, you can start a new character or do this or that or blah blah blah...but the game you play in essentially the same so really your not doing anything new.
Do what I do and take breaks. Not just for a day. I am talking breaks that last several weeks. Watch the forums and come back for special events and what not. I think you will find that if you take breaks and play in moderation you will enjoy the game much much better.
Good luck and try to have fun.
Hard mode is a gimmick - Yes but nowhere near what DoA is. I've done alot of hardmode missions so far, all on my mesmer, and have always found that I can contribute alot to a party. In DoA I can only contribute if I take the most overpowered pve skill in the game and build around that. That you need mostly human players is good imo, though indeed in the 8 player areas the players are a little thin, but isn't that what guilds and friendslists are for? I am sure you can find other dedicated Hardmode players if you look.
Assist other thru normal mode - If you enjoy doing that, why not? I don't, I help guildies and friends when I'm free, but I don't go looking for this.
Start another character - You've tried starting an ele and got a ritualist and ranger. Well, If you want to compare to the power of an SS necromancer, the ele would come closest, but needs skills from all over the place. With well placed aggro Ele's even outdamage SS necromancers because of the added shutdown from MS (the DoA way). An ele also makes excellent support and therefor a welcome addition to any hardmode party for instance. And if anything is truely difficult there is always place for an ele, whereas as soon as a second necromancer comes round he is doomed to BiP, look at DoA, The Deep and Tombs (before B/P). Someone else already mentioned that playing a warrior plays entirely different and it does. A warrior typically makes or break a party and is naturally looked apon to lead a party. I won't try to make you play a mesmer, it only suits those who do not care for direct power but want to supplement a party as best as they. With the lesser powerful elites and powerful skills if used wisely it is doable for a mesmer to take a cross-profession elite. Assassins are a joy to play, and add alot if played well. Paragon is nerfed, but still builds exist that will make everything just this bit easier, not the most exciting builds though. Wouldnt recommend dervish until you tried a warrior and stay away from monking.
I don't think individual effect is minimised. When I look at it from my view of grouping for a tough mission the following professions are the most wanted and the one player skill matters most.
1 - Tank - He is key. He needs to either have done it before or he needs to be able to listen very well. Titles on tanks (triple prot, explorer, skillhunter) impress me and make me take them over other players.
2 - Elementalist - I need nuking, but I need it rightly applied. Yes nice meteor shower on the melee, but now they will break aggro and the monk there will heal them anyways. No don't attack the next group, let the tank take aggro. Wtf firestorm. You get the idea.
Then if it is not DoA.
3 - Support - Barrage ranger with distracting shot/savage shot/dust trap, Domination mesmer, illusion mesmer, paragon, ritualist. The people who play these roles I will have to know, or I'll play it myself. If not able to bring one, I'll bring an extra nuker.
And lastly, monks and necros. I'll admit that SS is overpowered, but that basically leads to a very one-dimensional class. Necros are a dime a dozen. Every one of them has a SS skillbar and has played it before. C + space + Reckles haste + SS = gg half of the time, the other half you casted SS on a caster, but most figure out we want other targets after some encouragement. For Hard Mode Minion masters are nice, but from building a party point of view no concern, a Hero does it just as well, for the other stuff minion masters are too weak. Monks are also plenty, though you need real ones for Hardmode and elite stuff, they are typically widely available.
Farm for FoW - Or farm for tormented staff, a mallyx mini-pet, whatever.
PvP - Or TA for glad points But if it doesn't suit you, it doesn't.
You've forgot:
-Master The Deep/DoA and lead other groups through there.
I would advice you to start another character. Go for ele or warrior. The experience is completely different and like I said before ele's can always get into high-end pvp groups, warriors too, but if you don't know what you are doing you will build up a bad reputation and then it will get hard to find good groups, until you show otherwise.
I love Guild Wars. But I detest Anet. How such morons could make such a brilliant game is beyond me.
My primary motivation for picking a game other than GW2 as my next online RPG is not because I dislike the basic concept of Guild Wars, but because (other than minor non-gameplay things like Special Events, and new campaigns which aren't maintenance but new, paid products), the last update that Anet made that improved the game (rather than spoiled some aspect of it) was Sorrow's Furnace. In 2005. The primary attraction of moving to another online RPG is that it will not be made by Anet.
Well Zinger, we can't make fun happen for you, thats something you have to do for yourself. However, I will tell you a few things that have kept me from getting totally-out-of-my-mind bored:
AB: Sure, its repetitive, but with a fun group of friends on Vent it makes it a whole lot funner, and you get XP, and Faction for it. May be boring to some, and it does at times get boring to me, but its something to do.
Skill Hunter: I started up getting this title a couple weeks ago, since then I've capped over 120 skills on my Ranger. Its a great title, helps out with Cartographer, and often times guildies join in to cap, if they need the skill.
Hard Mode Farming: Although this is gotten in the past few days to be a bit more boring, I have been getting great loot from Hard Mode, especially the drops of Golds and Lockpicks. But like you said, Hard Mode was made into more than it should have been, its not that great. Too big an anticipation for something not so workwhile.
GvG: My guild GvG's on Tuesdays and Thursdays, when I'm on I join them usually, nuff said.
Hero Battles: I do this when I'm very bored....
KoaBD and PKM: Although I only have a couple titles maxed, I'm slowly getting towards both titles, and its very enjoyable. If your totally bored, try going for these, or if you want a real challenge, go for the "I'm very Important" title. Heck, at least its a decent waste of time.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
If your getting bored, play less during the day, or perhaps just take a break, eventually sometime will spark your interest, hopefully. I have been fortunate enough to have not gotten bored with this game. My secret? Play less, obsess less, take 1-2 day breaks once a week. In my opinion, you seem like the time that would think about this game all the time, which isn't that healthy...meethinks.
I just hope Anet knows what their doing. I know if I was running the show over there, we would be making Mini-Expansions to keep our customers until GW:EN, and finally GW2. Unfortunatly this simply isn't so.
But yep man, I'm slowly getting there too, I think we all are. Its just the same thing over and over again now.
AB: Sure, its repetitive, but with a fun group of friends on Vent it makes it a whole lot funner, and you get XP, and Faction for it. May be boring to some, and it does at times get boring to me, but its something to do.
Skill Hunter: I started up getting this title a couple weeks ago, since then I've capped over 120 skills on my Ranger. Its a great title, helps out with Cartographer, and often times guildies join in to cap, if they need the skill.
Hard Mode Farming: Although this is gotten in the past few days to be a bit more boring, I have been getting great loot from Hard Mode, especially the drops of Golds and Lockpicks. But like you said, Hard Mode was made into more than it should have been, its not that great. Too big an anticipation for something not so workwhile.
GvG: My guild GvG's on Tuesdays and Thursdays, when I'm on I join them usually, nuff said.
Hero Battles: I do this when I'm very bored....
KoaBD and PKM: Although I only have a couple titles maxed, I'm slowly getting towards both titles, and its very enjoyable. If your totally bored, try going for these, or if you want a real challenge, go for the "I'm very Important" title. Heck, at least its a decent waste of time.
If your getting bored, play less during the day, or perhaps just take a break, eventually sometime will spark your interest, hopefully. I'd expect the argument if the monk wasn't my stepson.
In my case, I just go over to his room and smack him around (figuratively). Unfortunately, there's no /bitchsmack for the rest of the internet. :P
I figure if my own family can be that annoying about missions, how much did I want to inflict on myself of the public? I'm still considering trying this out, but.... yeah.
I don't have any easy answers for you, although this sort of the reason why I'd love to get a group of people on a thread or something that all are interested in helping people out, or going to UW, or *something* where everyone's willing to work as a team and are at least halfway competent (I don't mind lack of skill at all - I'd consider myself barely above average - but a good attitude goes a lot farther than skill IMO). A lot of what pushes me away is some of the rude people.
If you want to try something totally not like a necro, you could try a dervish or warrior. It sounds like you've alread tried a LOT of builds for your necro, too.
A guildie and I are trying out some fun farming builds, so that's what's keeping us busy right now.
Or, do what I do, and just do something else for a while when you get bored.
Start a survivor character. I personally love the added tensity while playing. It keeps you on your toes, and nothing in the game seems as easy anymore
When im bored with alot of my characters, i love to start a new character, even if its a proffession ive already played.Get new armors , get a new look. Seeing as i have 2 of alot of proffessions, i have the tendancy to create characters alot.
Or start start a presearing character, not really for the title but just for the fun of being in pre
GvG is somewhat the same way. You can get to the top 100 on the ladder...but it doesn't matter unless you are top 32. And obviously, I couldn't accomplish either. And I'm 17. I can't really HA/GvG all night consistantly; Schoolwork comes first. What can I do to extend my Guild Wars life? I guess Pokemon Diamond was just released... |
Can't reach a goal? work harder.
You know I have to say I am not really bored with GW as I have been with other games of late. I always find something useful to do. Zinger is right about one thing though (at least in my mind); why did they not release the new PvE skills out with Hard Mode? It was the one thing I thought would go “hand to hand” with Hard Mode. Only to find out A-net states “we are not quite finished with them,” and “they will be coming out soon.” Just like the whole Razah blunder that happened at the beginning of Nightfall.
I could understand if A-net was a bit more up front with us, about the problems and the solutions of what will go into these new updates. Honestly we heard nothing about what they were planning to do with that new “drop system,” all we heard about was the changes with Hard Mode. It does kind of seem that every time there will be something great added to GW, there is always a catch.
I mean I am not ungrateful for everything that has been added to GW that really has added more depth to it. They have done many things to enhance the gameplay for GW, but it has come with a cost though. Some of it is our fault and the press for gauging GW into something it’s not supposed to be. However some of it falls to A-net as well for not telling us the flip sides of things, and playing it off as being a coy business people.
Again no disrespect to the development team for they put in those long hours just to make the game more enticing. Of course my thanks can not be more astute for what you have accomplished.
Been with GW since the start... everything, I mean EVERYTHING! they have 'announced' to be coming in the game is made to seem like something its not.
And Gaile Grey (yes I even spelt her name wrong!) is the biggest con artist of them all.
there are many hundreds of words documented from anet (and Grey) which turned out to be blatent lies... oops sorry, I shouldnt say that. Grey has argued many times with us that 'technically' in the 'english language' what they said was true, and not a lie.
The biggest single con being 'Alliance battles' as they name indicates we expected to 'battles against alliances'... how sick were we all when it was revealed to be a glorified faction battle.
A-net, you suck.
Same impression on HM. Did Northern Wall with heroes, not hard, just grind. Vanquished Ice Floe. Not hard, just grind, and almost failed it because I had not killed the single guy that runs when you enter from Droknar (I entered from port). Didn't do anymore of HM, bored of it already. :/
Renegade26
The rewards for HM are just not enough. Experience is shit. Simple as. There is not title for experience, it only gives you Skill Points (which is so wtf in itself). And a poor amount of gold. I saw HM as a way to get money without having to farm. But its just poor...
As for new servers, that's an idea I'm kind of against. There are quite a few "dead" server, meaning servers with maxed level players but very very few people to play with. More servers would hurt this.
I got Diamond on the day they were released. ITs the best Pokemon game to date and makes great use of the touch screen.
OT: What I meant is that since the WoW expansion, it's difficult to start a character on an established server because it's hard to level and a be a part of the community when everyone is in Outland. Plus, the economy is skewed. On new servers, comminunities can build.
Well, not everyone's in Outland because not everyone is level 70 (Outland is the new endgame content in WoW, for those who don't know). I'm on Skywall, and I've always been able to find a group for any instance. Some took longer than others, though.
A little more on topic: I'm getting bored, too. I've had my fun with Fort Aspenwood and helped the Kurzicks out quite a bit. Does anyone play classical Doom, preferably Doom 2? Hit me up a PM and let's set up a co-op game!
