Auto-Targeting, Thoughts...
Ec]-[oMaN
I personally don't like it. If I want to target something I'll click, tab, c space. Currently you can waste skills if a current target is selected and then dies before you cast/use. If anything give us an option to toggle it in the options menu, especially for future interface changes. Don't want it, don't like it. On another note, how about that close current target icon...
What do you think about it?

i think it's great.

I liked how it was before but I can understand why some people do like it. Hopefully what will happen is that they make it a toggle option.
Btw, why do people use the angry face smiley when making a thread? whenever I see that, I just set myself to read a rage thread . ..

It hasn't come into play for me yet, but I can see how it can really mess things up in a critical area. In the late stages of the game, you NEED to selectively call your targets, especially with heroes/hench. If you end up attacking the wrong monster with the wrong skill, it could mean you're in deep trouble. So yeah I'd agree with you, I'd like to see an option to disable it.

both things should be toggled.

I like the new targeting feature. It seems to target the closest enemy anyway, but I wouldn't mind if there was an option to turn off auto-targeting.
-Loki-
Took me one match to get used to it. Doesn't bother me anymore.

I agree with Miral that they should be toggled, but I'm loving the new target system. I've already gotten used to it to the point that I don't need "c+space" anymore. Just looking at your target, getting them within aggro range and hitting space is enough. Freakin great. Of course, tabbing and straight up clicking your target still works, so you can correctly find and target what you need to. It's just all-around grand.

I'll have to get used to it, it's strange for my that your fighting one character and using a attack combo and then you using your last skill on a different foe.
that cancle target button makes it look ugly IMO

I'd get rid of it. Last night in gvg I cast Shame on a monk under pressure. The monk died just before the end of the cast and the spell hit a warrior instead. Cue predictable "bad mesmer" flaming on local chat from the other team.

its totally annoying!
on the subject of auto-aiming - i played for a few hours yesterday and didn't even notice it - so truth be told i have no idea what it feels like. tried to trigger it a few times (after hearing about it) but i have no idea how!
so currently
1. the auto aiming: don't even know its there
2. the cancel selection button - dump dump dump!

Also, it works on NPCs and loot! Seriously, try it out, get near a pile of gold or dropped item and center it in your view - it will automatically highlight and you can hit spacebar to snatch it up. Really cool, IMO.
EDIT: BTW, agree about the cancel button. Pretty darn pointless and just extra clutter for the GUI. Win some lose some, I guess.

Definitely need a toggle for auto-target. Sounds convenient for PvE and disastrous for PvP. And what purpose does the Cancel Selection button serve? Under any circumstances? I don't see the point.
Guldur
I get tricked by the "small" deep wound everytime. At pvp sometimes you just take a quick look at the bar and can sometimes get confused by that white thingy.
Orphan Anthem
i think its gay, i was gvging and during a spike i usally go ice spikes then freezing gust, during this spike ice spikes was enough but i his freezing gust just incase it wasnt and my current target was dead so i just wated 10 snaring a target that i didnt need to.
Also i got a big issue with the cancle button, it looks like the target has a deep wound on him, this is a BIG confusing in high end gvg

What does it actually do...
I haven't even noticed it doing anything yet, does it only apply to spellcasting? Because my guild leader seems to hate it too on his ele.

Wouldn't it be neat if Anet had a SOLID POLICY that any new interface changes must be toggle-able?
I mean, many people have been playing the game for two years, and might actually like the game as it was.
It's actually possible for these little "improvements" to make a game that was fun to play yesterday, completely annoying today. (See the thread on the popularity of zoom scrolling http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10161652)
I haven't played with the new targeting enough to have an opinion, yet, but you cannot go wrong with a toggle-able option!

A long waiting time, a highly disappointed skill balance update. And now I know why. ANet likes to spend time on totally redundant and useless things like this.
Cancel button, what is it for ? Making the GUI more complicated ?
And with new auto targeting, lol. That means if I use Shatter Enchantment or Energy Burn on target during spike but it died before, I wasted a skill on some random target and have to wait 30s for its recharge ?

Royal pain in the arse.... that is what it is.
Scenario #1. I'm fighting a group of enemies, tab twice to get to the second-nearest enemy... and end up attacking the third-nearest because it already auto-targetted the nearest. I end up using the wrong skills on the wrong enemy before I even notice (my fingers work faster than my eyes do often enough).
Scenario #2. Fighting a selection of three bosses in Dejarin Estate with my Assassin... quite used to C+Spacing, but more importantly instinctively attacking whenever the next name pops up. End up auto-targeting a freakin chest. No, I don't want to open the chest in the middle of combat. Kill the next enemy. Auto-targets the chest again. No, I definitely don't want to open the stupid chest!
Scenario #3. Doing the earliest few missions in Elona for the Protector of Elona title. Complete walkover... but I don't pick up the loot because it is low-level crap and not worth my time. WHAT does the auto-targeter decide it wants to target next? No... not the next enemy, but the nearest drop of a min-levelled vabbian scimitar worth about 9 gold or somesuch. I open my inventory and promptly throw it out. Next time it does it I'm ready and avoid picking it up in the first place... which isn't easy with conditioned reflexes.
In a word: NO!
The auto-targeting system is totally unnecessary. Everyone managed just fine before... but now it just gets in the way. It is like those bloody microsoft help wizards all over again, taking control away from the player and making it a sub-par automated process. SCRAP IT!

Especially when I'm in the wurms, when I use c-space alot, this new targeting is kinda annoying. It's kinda cool that I keep picking up my loot without realizing it, but I also keep trying to pick up other people's loot? lol. The retargeting after death must really mess up spellcasters, but since the update I've only been playing my sin and fortunately my skills don't trigger at all if I use them out of order (due to the retargeting).
Still, I'd like to have the option to have it the old way.

seems to me to be one less programming step for botters. now they just have to run into area and attack. not saying it makes it easier on them but it certainly doesn't make it any more difficult either.
masteroflife
There should be a option to turn auto targeting off. it annoy the hell out of me.
It no only makes you waste skills when you intend target has died, it also cause you to overextend a little bit when you are trying to stay back because it targets a random target and if it targets someone in the back line then you have to run in. this happened to me many times. also playing mesmer, if the target died, you waste your shame on a ele or warrior and guilt on a monk...

Pretty random imo, seems some interface change and a buff to Dwarven Battle Stance is required on every update now or something. I'd rant about the lack of important things changing, but naw.
Seems I notice less on my ranger and warrior than I do on my caster chars. Definitely needs to be toggle-able though, occasionally cast on the wrong target while not paying too much attention.
The target clearing thing... I don't see the point. Meh. Needs to be toggle-able as well.

MrFuzzles
It can get confusing if you assume it has already targeted something and you hit Next Target to get.. well.. the next target, but what it does is that it "properly" targets the "suggested" target instead.
They should make it clear wether a target is actually targeted or just suggested, the lack of their hp bar at the top can get ambigious. Make the circle under them dotted or something when it's suggested, and solid when it's targeted.
Otherwise it's not too bad. It's pretty nice when you're standing in a beat-down circle doing a specific skill chain, and it doesn't get disrupted because your target died without you noticing.

I totally hate the "close target" button. It's extremely annoying in my view. I want it gone.
Firebaall
I can't help think that this is somehow tied to how the bots were killing monsters, and picking up loot.
It may seem trivial to you or me, but I'll betcha it's a core mechanic on a ton of bot scripts.

Meh, I don't notice a big difference really. If anything it's a bit more convenient to pick up drops by just having to press space bar after battles instead of clicking around, but beyond that, the difference is really minor.

any interface "improvements" should be implemented with toggle options.
personally I would toggle the auto target off...it's annoying...it doesn't target like normal targeting works as far as I can tell. I wouldn't mind it if by hitting my normal target button it simply confirmed the selected target as my target...instead it goes to the next one in the cycle.

Just think, put in a toggle option for all new interface changes, and NEVER, EVER have to listen to a gripe (on that subject) again.
If I were Anet, that would be my lifelong dream.
Is adding a toggle too much programming trouble? Not an excuse, because adding the new feature is then, by definition, too much trouble, because a toggle should be an integral part of any new feature.

Well, there are things as too many options as well, which can get daunting and confusing to new players. Personally I'm a more is better kinda guy, but I'm just guessing that's the reason.
They could introduce some "advanced" options tab or something for stuff like this. They could put a lot of nifty stuff in there. (mmmmmm transparent party list)

This new-fangled autotargeting is great for my paragon, as he just targets the closest monster and starts attacking and chanting away happily in the midline. It's made controlling him a little more streamlined. But for my mesmer, I can't afford to have distractions like that while visually scanning the entire enemy group watching for telltale signs of spellcasting - it's already hard enough to get into a group without part of the UI making my chosen role more difficult. I'd like the ability to turn it on or off when required.

I love it when Slivernewal farming.
Losing casts of Stone Daggers because the target died is really annoying. And truth be told, often I really don't care who I'm hitting because the main damage is done by other spells anyway.
I just tested it on a run where I don't even use Kinetic Armor; just Ether Renewal. It was great. It more than made up for the inconvenience of Stoneflesh Aura's timing being more fragile.

The autotargetting actually makes playing MORE difficult, especially on a caster (since you casts will keep going after something has died instead of just cancelling).
Honestly, this cosmetic change is retarded and designed for Warriors and Dervish newbies who want to play the game by running around and hitting the space bar key over and over again. It doesn't actually help players who know what they are doing and are fans (read: people who will buy your future products A.NET).
