The Lag Poll (as of Tuesday, 10 July)

Hello,

As you know, there have been some latency or lag issues for players playing in or through the Frankfurt Data Center in Germany. This is not exclusively a Guild Wars issue, but the issue is affecting Guild Wars, with our regrets.

The Network Teams have asked that I conduct encourage everyone to submit support tickets and include tracerts and the -diag file mentioned here. They are particularly seeking tickets with information gathered over the last 48 hours only. They would like to know the following:

After maintenance efforts this weekend, has the lag gotten better for you? Is it worse? About the same? Please answer the poll with the most fitting response based on experiences from Monday forward. (Do not include past experiences or those from the weekend, as the maintenance had not yet been performed.) This poll is intended for those playing on, or through, the German Data Center only.

Thanks so much. Comments are more than welcome!

Does "diminished" mean "got worse"? If so, then yes!

Edit: Wow, you actually replaced "diminished" with "got better"...

No, it means that the lag has improved, that the frequency or the intensity of lag has gotten better (diminished = reduced = better connectivity).

Thanks for asking -- I've modified my wording to make it more clear.

Maybe. I'm going to take it seriously, though, 'cause I want to make extra sure I get good clear answers for the network teams.

I see. My frequency or intensity of connectivity has diminished, then.

THe main problem I am experiencing is less a latency issue, and more I keep freezing for 2-10 second interval issue. It was not a problem before this weekend. High ping is easy to deal with as long as you dont continually freeze.

Since monday however, it has cleared up a lot. However I still experience freezes, though not nearly as bad as I did this weekend.

Kyp -- I'd call what you were experiencing (and it's good to know it's better) a result or symptom of lag. I mean, if there is latency between the server and you, you can do all sorts of odd things, like rubberbanding, pausing, and so forth.

I never rubberbanded once in Guild Wars till about a month ago, now I get it all the time... huge rubberbands too, like across the entire area...

I'd like to point out to Galie that this poll (while a good idea which I aplaud) PROBABLLY won't get accurate results as many people who don't play on the german data center might not read your post and just vote (since lag has become more of an issue for everyone in the game reccently). Also, as prism said, most people don't know which data center they use/how many a.net has, so maybe some clearly explination on that would be a good idea.

I really had extreme lag issues during the dragon festival, 10-20k ping in english districts and 1-5k ping in international and numerous error 7's, especially when changing towns and districts.

After the dragon festival it got better, but I still have 500-1000 latency and occasional spikes that freeze the game and make enemies hop over the screen.

I don't count for the poll, but the US is also having some lag issues. I got hit hard at the start of the event, and it still hasn't gone away.

I'm in the Netherlands and have not had any lag to speak of, amber light occasionally in busy districts but not in maps, thats been all green.

No disconnects or errors at all in the last 3 weeks.

I'm in Ireland playing, so i don't count in the poll, but I haven't experienced any lag during the dragon festival, my ping went up from around 200 to around 700 (still at around 700) but it hasn't caused any noticable lag, and no errors or freezes, and I was generally in the packed european english districts during the festival. I know many people in my guild couldn't enter any districts in Shing Jea though, or they would get an error or freeze, and they were noticably more laggy when in any towns during the festival, but they have said that it has gotten better since the festival ended.

I play in the english districts, yet i'm experiencing lag as well, so have a few of my guild mates. Its around the same as of the last few days, no noticable improvements.

I've been having lag problems, but then, my CPU just melted and fried my motherboard in the process, so I'm not particulary reliable.

Malta is by comparison to other countries minuscule so I'm sure we don't have one locally. Perhaps we use the Italian one as that's the nearest EU country.

I'm playing from Germany, and for me the lags are gone since ~2 hours.
In the last week I had lags of up to 120 seconds and freezes every 20 seconds,
but now everything is back to normal, meaning: green dot with pings below 100 ms (sometimes 200ms) and no more freezes or Error 07 all the time

MY guildies in Colorado have been hovering at an average ping of around 2000-6000 since friday however (which by the way makes vanquishing 'interesting').

I live in Austin, TX and had almost never experienced lag before this weekend. At times on Sunday it was almost unplayable. Monday was usually better, but still the lag was much worse than ever in the past. Also, probably 5 or 6 times I was dropped when switching regions (going in/out of portals, etc.).

I'm having lag often, but it may be just because of comcast and the wet summertime floridian weather.

I have noticed a significant improvement since the weekend with regards to the lag/latency issue. My ping is between 50-300 which is very manageable. UK (Euro) server, by the way.
I still have small lag spikes in a somewhat sporadic fashion when I enter some explorable areas, generally in places where there are lots of monsters. (And Mind Freeze has actually frozen my computer on occasion, lol.) However I am almost sure that this is an unrelated problem as this has been going on for quite some time.

Need a poll asking about lag in the US region too, since lag is most certainly not limited to Frankfurt.

Anyway, I hope whatever troubles they are experiencing there get sorted out.

I was actually out of town from wednesday afternoon until Sunday about 9:30pm.

I was hittin ghuge lag Sunday night but assumed it had to do with a crowd in Shing jea and the explorables for the quests. The celestial gathering was a nightmare of rubberbanding for me (not helped by the spamming of insults in chat by those taking things way too seriously)

Today, I was in presear for a spell and had some streaks of red ping but it was not effecting the game.

I honestly assumed it was a local issue tied to the heat wave.

Umm... I am playing in America. This morning had no lag and now that I just got home and started my normal farming... the lag was very unplayable, pings in the 1000's, and it is not my computer because it plays other games like cs and wc3 tft fine over the internet.

And my guildies from Poland and Europe are experiencing lag like me as well...

I use the low end (768k) Verizon DSL.
I have rarely had any issue with Lag.
Recently before the event, during the event, and still now I am facing lag spikes.
Most the time it is playable with a few times stopping everything altogether.

2 things: First - many, many people switched from EU-servers to US- or ID-servers (ID-servers are also located in TX, as far as I can see) and consumed alot of power. Second - the dragonfestival had many participants, many people were online and therefore the servers had very high load and high traffic.

As for the poll - it got alot better! Afaik, they disconnected the direct route to a very big carrier (Telekom) in Frankfurt which solved the problem. Now the traffic gets carried over L3- and Telefonica-backbones. Most of the people from England for example got routet over L3 anyways, so they had no big problems. Most germans get naturally routed over the Telekom-lines (it's the biggest ISP/carrier in .de) and this also explains why some had big issues and some not at all. For the german people: Note, you might have slightly worse pings than before all this lag-trouble occured, but that's simple because in fact the route over Telekom *was* the best/shortest route before the shit hit the fan. Now your packets have to travel a bit longer, maybe. Anyways, that should be in ranges way under 100ms additional latency, so if you had ~80ms before all the issue and have ~130ms now, that's "normal" until they get the troubles finally fixed. At least no 30.000ms delays anymore. Thx

During the last weekend with dragon festival, playing was not possible for me at the European servers. I had huge pings from 500 to way over 1000. I spent the weekend in the international districts where it was still playable with pings of around 300.

The situation is improved now. The ping indicator no longer turns to red but is orange most of the time. Pings are still higher as normal, where the indicator is green usually.

I'm located in the Netherlands and connected via XS4ALL Internet BV via the KPN (Royal Dutch Telecom) network.

So, in short: Yes, it improved a lot since the last weekend, but it's not back to usual yet.

I've had pings of 450-2000 averagely for some days now, frequently spiking up to 20.000-80.000 (you know how that feels)...
just yesterday... suddenly... 40-140 ping... sometimes "spiking" up to 220-250 or maybe, rarely, 280... which I consider normal and well-playable. Hope it stays that way.

Didn't see any serious lag during the weekend, but last night (Tuesday) the game was completely unplayable with constant freezing for 2-10 seconds at a time, several disconnects and general lagginess. Not something you'd want to experience when soloing in HM (The lag was not that evident in the outposts but unbearable in the explorables).

This on European districts (accessing from Finland), but once I hopped to ID1 and did some quests with a friend the lag appeared to be almost completely gone.

I normally hadn't lag myself in gw aside from when my providers is acting up :P

now i get game freezes wich last for 10 seconds and up, i certainly know it isn't my laptop (Since it can play sword beta smooth without any lag) so i know it's a server side problem.. or a problem with routing.

For some of my guildies/guild wars friends the lag is unbearable, they were not even able to pick up a present that dropped at their feet and lay there for a minute...
