GW:EN-Related Problem: Display Driver Stopped Responding
Sun Fired Blank
I hope I do this right! I'd like to note that I have never experienced any graphical problem in my time playing Guild Wars. That includes having finished every campaign and gaining ranks in the gladiator and luxon allegiance tracks. However, when I try to speak to Skjaldur Lightfingers (sp?) in the first part of GW:EN, when her dialogue prompt comes up, everything locks up. I can move my cursor, but everything ceases to move and the system won't respond. Then everything blows up! I get a high pitched feedback whine and I get kicked to a rather nasty error (attached). I'd assume this is an issue between my graphics chip / drivers and something involving that blasted Norn, because it is absolutely reproduceable, I've never had any problems with Guild Wars before this, and I've yet to have any other problems with any part of the preview event.
I attached a DxDiag file with only the Display Devices and System Information.
EDIT: Gurrah. Nevermind that; I can reproduce the problem with the Norn, but I just got the same error in the Eye of the North itself. That brings my preview weekend to a screeching halt. :\
Thanks in advance!

Same thing happened to me. I had a crash at the Into the North cinematic and I lost my primary GWEN quest, but I got the Asura Gate. When I zoned out of the Boreal Station I had a second crash and the same message Sun Fired Blank posted with the driver display. After I re-logged in GW my resolution was at a minimum and was unchangeable. My Intel 82915G/GV/910GL default display adapters are up-to-date and I used -image to download the latest updates before the crashes occurred.

Same thing happened to me when I went into the portal at and later when talking to that same Norn. :/
I need the exact steps on what to do on that -image thing you were talking about. I'm a non-techie so a visual guide would help me or the exact thing to copy paste. Any help appreciated.

Arcane Guardian
I experienced several exactly same crashes with the same message. Drivers are up to date and i even installed Directx 10. To no avail. It appears to be random: one duriing a cinematic, one talking to npc norn, one in EOTN itself, one when i was fighting frozen elementals, and my last happened just after i travelled to Ring ofo fire to get away from GWEN content.
I do hope that the last crash was just because I left GW: EN, if this occurs again in usual areas....*shudder* Seems it is update related.
EDIT: Shai Lee, -image thing is a command added to gww.exe file
It downloads all data and then clloses the client. You wont be downloaoding data ingame afterwards in loading screens.
Just go to the path where gw.exe file is and write gw.exe -image.
I did it pre-event and still have this problem.

I'm having total system lockups also, no matter what chapter/area. Leaving town=lockup. Looks like the patches broke Intel graphics compatability again....
zwei2stein
Well, i have lockups too ... ever since first todays update. i dont evne have to enter game, staying on login screen few minutes is enough.
btw: i dont think it is graphics card issue really, i swapped out nvidia card for ati card and it still happens.

am also having massive system graphic lockups - have had to system reboot twice today - this update doesn't seem compatible with intel graphics cards including the latest drivers. Anet plz help......

I got the same problem, when going out of the Boreal station. i could just walk a few steps before everything crashing down. I just can't play :'(
I'm using
Mobile Intel® 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset Family
and never had problems with it on guild Wars (also finished 3 campaigns and playing hard mode).

I did that -image thing and it proceeded to d/l 45,000 files...so I was like...'ok'...and went to sleep. I wake up and it appears to be done downloading because that window that tells me so is gone. I then click on the GW shortcut icon and the window briefly pops up that it's 'Connecting to ArenaNet'. Sometimes it says 0% and sometimes it says 100%, but either way the window disappears and nothing loads. One time another window even showed that it can't open because another copy is already running. :S I can only assume it's from periodically clicking on the icon to see if it will load the game yet, but to no avail. I've tried restarting my pc multiple times as well...
So much for the beginning of my 'sneak peek' weekend, more like I'll have to sneak a peek at other people's screenshots of this weekend if this isn't resolved in some way for me. And that pretty much defeats the purpose...
This is what I get for loving to play a game but having zero techie skills whatsoever when things go wrong and being naive that things should work when I click on the pretty icon. :P
[Add/Edit]: Ok, I went back and removed the -image thing and now my game loads...to see if it still freezes/crashes during gameplay like cutscenes is another matter..

Hmmm must be a widespread problem. Happened/s to me also. All drivers are up to date, and I've never had a problem before.
Can't get past the log-in screen as of now
Hope this gets resolved before most of the sneak-peaks gone

Same as Above... log in screen is it for 3 seconds.. then boom nothing
I want to unload the Pre Gwen KEY NOW PLEASE!

this might be happening because of the lag. the lag is way too high and the files are way too long for the graphics card and the memory to keep up with and they end up overloading, then crashing. just a theory.

has anyone found a way around this yet - I'm missing the whole preview w/e at the moment

moriz
hmm, seems the problem might be stemmed from the integrated graphics... more specifically, the 910/915 series. this is strange, since intel GMA had always ran GW just fine before. maybe the more demanding graphics of GW:EN is overloading it.
Unver Ferth
I find it hard to believe it is "graphical overload", since I can no longer leave town in any chapter without a lockup.......
Between this and the in-game store preview order no longer available, I'm beginning to regret having spent nearly $500 on GW for our household

i managed to pick up the preorder for $1 CDN at my local futureshop... it's not like you absolutely need to order from the online store.
anyways, post your entire system specs. at least we can look for common patterns among those with the problem.

Dude we pretty much know what all the complaints have incommon, they're all intel graphic cards ( so is mine...).
A-Net hurry up plz!

i have been having similar issues, but for me the game only freezes up when i do GW:EN stuff. i too have a intel graphics card, but i dont know what the deal is. hopefully Anet will post a patch soon
strikefreedom
same prob as everyone else, buti'm using this
Intel 945GM graphics shared card. it seems the problem rises from the intel card overloading.

It is not exclusive to Intel graphics chip.
Since GWEN introduced new shading, the crash/freeze may be related to that. Some people reported that the issue is solved partially when running -noshaders.
The most annoying thing for me personally is that after the crash my resolution is at the minimum and I can't change it anymore because the box is grayed out.

The GW:EN Sneak Peek update is full of bugs for me currently. I have crashed a near 20 times before I finally gave up on playing.
And I have one serious problem: My monk is locked. I can not play play him! Yes, I can log into him, but I can't do anything. I can't open my inventory, I can't open windows, I can't move or talk in chat or even map. He's completely bugged from being able to play. He's my main character and now he's frozen in an outpost/town until ANet fixes the bugs. I don't want to bring any other characters into the new areas cause they will probably end up like him.

Yeah....normally I really am forgiving towards ANet, but with this....
first that utterly idiotic bug that prevented many people from purchasing the pre-view
second, this bug, which is forcing a computer restart every 5 minutes.
This is absolutely ridiculous.
No offense ANet, but perhaps you rushed this a bit?
EDIT: How exactly do you input -noshaders? You go into properties...it says Gw, what else?

Like most of you, I've never had problems before this blasted preview event.
Before it was just GW:EN related things that caused issues with my graphics card, and then it was just loading into my guild hall with a character that hadn't even gotten the quest to get there -_-'. my screen goes completely black, and a high-pitched screech comes from it for a few seconds. I can still hear the music from where ever I happened to be.

-noshaders=no fix
still waiting for word that they are working on it..............
tried -dx8 earlier also resulting in crash to desktop in town, so took that off ASAP

Don't worry, we're working on it.
Integrated graphics problems are much harder to track down because you can't just swap in a video card. You have to set up an entire machine!
From the thread I understand people have seen this on the 915, 945, and 950. Any others? I've been trying to reproduce the problem on my machines with no luck so far but they've been 965 and 845.
Btw, along with -noshaders you could try -dx8. (Just remember to remove those options once the fix goes in)

Not the most powerful machine but i have never had problems before except for the graphics bug introduced and fixed on July 17th 2007.
Neo Nugget
Is it fixed yet?I was really hoping to have this fixed by the end of school

Chimeria
F11 and then low shade in the graphic options fixed the problem and I could play the whole evening. The qualitiy is not really good, but still enough to play and enjoy the event. Did you all tried this? You can do it before loading your character...
Good luck arenanet and thank you tring to fix this

Ok the problem is with Intel graphics cards, the problem seems to be with GWEN as people have still been able to play the other campaigns. If people have other computers to use I suggest you use them as with Tech support only work business days you will miss the preview event.
