HoS chest runs?
The Way Out
Funny thing is I can't take no for an answer, so the HOS cr is still pretty close to remaining a run for me. A few blatant changes they made are the gates at every portal. But I want to thank anet for putting them there because that eliminated the leechers that infested the runs, lazy leechers ruined so many runs for me. Keg spamming is a tad slower, and just dropping the keg at a breakable wall doesn't explode it anymore. You now have to wait the full duration for the barrel to go off. Magmus sucks, but he can still be defeated through spamming. A suggestion to teams that go for the run is to bring a Ranger with Quickening Zephyr. It slows the recharge of Magmus and friends casting tremendously and as long as you interupt is "raining fire of wipe everything when you aggro him" the run is still a run.
The funny things is, once you pay close attention to the AI in guildwars, you get a feel for how to bend the game to your liking. I can complete Frostmaw with a careful team in twenty five minutes.

QZ slows recharge? Maybe you're thinking of Energizing Winds, because QUICKENING Zephyr definitely doesn't slow down anything...

I think those kegs should do damage to all in the area, friend or foe

I have always fought my way on this one with h/h because it just wasn't that tough and I wasn't in a hurry - so the changes to the doors didn't really affect me. After the update I thought I would give it a try and see how hard he is to kill now. Just for fun I brought the norn bear skill - also put on max hp armor. The bear skill made it a breeze - very easy to get to him. The extra hp from the bear aspect along with the weakness from the bear shout seemed to work well along with the kegs - kept me alive during his attacks at least long enough for my healers to do their job so I didn't die and could just spam the kegs and bear shouts. I think I finished in under 20 minutes. It would be faster, of course, if you ran the first part. So if you are having trouble with the boss might try the bear aspect.

Well, now its nerfed totally, i think. Haven't yet tested with new keg timing, but I think they finally nerfed. So this thread can be perhaps closed?

I knew it was coming, nerfing the keg drops. That was inevitable.
What they SHOULD do now is reverse all the other changes they made to the dungeon. They've effectively stopped chest running. Why keep it at a higher difficulty level when it takes so much longer without running anyway.

R.I.P HoS Chest runs.

i just tested the new update and budger blackpowder only give you a keg after your previous one has exploded, which effectively kills the chest run.

People, people, people. It is a simple matter for, like 6 people to bring damaging skills, and 2 to bring running ones. The runners make it to the end of the level, then everyone dies. Kills things to open the doors. Repeat.
Fox Reeveheart
Wow that blows.
I mean WHAT was the actual reasoning behind the chest runs? I mean who was it really hurting?
If anything it was a way for people to get diamonds and gemstones. :\ Now how will i get them? with the small chance i'll get one from a dungeon chest drop? NO! I have to buy them from the trader or some person. I can't go get them myself. Or I could go to nightfall and just hope I get a diamond essence and just HOPE i can salvage it for a diamond.
And do the gemstones drop from anywhere? I don't know of any place!
This sucks :\ I only done 5 runs ever but I was looking to do more.

It might still be doable if you have tons of aoes like Savana Heat, Meteor Shower etc (is Magmus resistant to fire?). If you have eles you could aoe the boss and aggro the oozes and aoe. They might run away from aoe though, I dunno.
If you have 8 eles you should have np killing stuff and you can use your secondary proff for running.
The run might be a bit slower and not that much of a "run" but it should still be pretty fast.
I haven't tried it. Just an idea.

So they turned a run that was free, fun, and medium/rarely high rewarded, into a run that will most likely turn to a runner(xxxg)+team.

I really wish ANet would think a little before doing things like this.
I don't do the run but I do like to farm for granite - I was planning to buy the onyx and diamonds. This run was a benefit to me because the price of onyx and diamonds was dropping fairly quickly while the price of granite was going up (because people use it to make the destroyer weapons). That put destroyer weapons within my reach even though I did not do the run.
Since yesterday's nerf onyx has risen 1k and granite has dropped 30g/10. I suspect that trend will increase now - probably putting onyx at 10k by the end of next week while dropping granite back to under 100g/10. That means no destroyer weapons for me for a very long time.
It is not only me this effects. For me a new weapon would just be a luxury. But this nerf is going to hit new players pretty hard too. Granite is something that drops fairly frequently in the beginning parts of the game. The high price of granite meant that new players could get more money to buy the things they need and want - increasing their enjoyment of the game. Now they will be screwed too.
So some people got mega-rich off the run. Who cares? The trickle down benefit was good for a lot of new people and now ANerf has made it harder for them too.
ANerf, hire yourselves and economist - PLEASE

Well, guess it is back to DOA for me. Was fun with my alliance/guild to do it. Figure I finally got about $5 worth of time in GWEN now, so they only owe me $35 more.
Please remember...
I must not GRIND. GRIND is the mind-killer. GRIND is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my GRIND... I will permit it to pass over me and through me.

You are missing the point I think .
The quote has been thrown about a lot when defending things that are highly repeatable. Things like the shutdown Slavers Exile bug, and the exploited keg in HAS, and DOA.
Now there is nothing wrong with defending any of those things - that is taking a valid position in a discussion and warrants respect. I think where people are starting to smile is that "I must not grind" is being used to defend grinding activity.
By all means defend the activity, but be honest and don't howl out "I wanna grind" then follow up with that quote.

Well im not very happy about the nerf, but im pretty sure they nerfed it because it became too easy for noobs to acquire a vast amount of money too fast without really trying. They aren't banning us from farming in general, cause usually thats hard to get something worthwhile.
In the end, im angry but i know y they did it. Although im not buying GW 2, im looking forward to the mini expansion this november, which should make this much more fun.

IMO this nerf is going to hurt the average smuck more than the farmers (I didn't have HoS so I could never do it). My reasoning: more people farming gemstones, the quicker they go down in price. The quicker they go down in price, the more affordable things are for non-farmers and because the way mat traders work, it would have also been a reduced future moneyspawn because cheaper mats are bought from the traders for less.

DOA in hard mode and PVP are the only real challenges left for me in the game. GWEN is endless farming for points to buy reskined armor (already have elite armor) or consumables. No money in it. No fun in it. No challenge in it. DOA is a challenge for me still. Not many areas are anymore.
Like I said, got the first real fun out of GWEN with the alliance/guild with a run that the average player could do and wanted to. Ashame it had to come to an end, but I knew it would. So I now feel I got $5 worth of enjoyment out of GWEN which is more then I had from it before this. Figure they owe me $35 more in fun to call it even.
So, what you consider grinding in DOA I consider a challenge. What others consider a challenge in GWEN I consider endless dribble with no challenge in it.
Please remember...

I've never done a HoS chest run before, but I just did the quest today. I still think it's alright. Even if you keep on hitting the space bar there's only a delay of about 2 seconds.
It has been hindered, but not broken.

Ok, so I've given the 'new and re-re-revised' HoS a try...
To be honest, getting to Magmus isn't really any different than it was before, assuming you fight your way down rather than running (which is what I used to do anyway). The 'more creatures by the door' part of the update is just a couple of extra skelks - I've coughed up tougher things after a good night out.
No, the problem is still Magmus himself. You can't wipe him and *then* deal with the huge number of mobs that spawn (which mostly seem to be lvl24 now instead of lvl20)... no, since they spawn when you ping him you have to bust through them all to focus on Magmus himself... who, since he won't be pulled, just hovers near his spawn point and wipes the party when he feels like it. And you *will* get wiped
Pain Inverter and mesmer shutdowns still seem to be the way to go... but... it's *SUCH* a hard slog to do it, and there's a real danger at 60dp of not being able to beat his regen while you run back after the wipe, rendering the entire run pointless. After he's done, the bunch of lvl24 mobs that spawn from his corpse his practically a bit of light relief!
And for what? For the effort involved, I'd expect a little something more out of that damned chest! I just did the dungeon 5 mins ago (as part of the viability test) with a good, well-balanced team (the same one I used before) of H&H, and what did I get? A lousy Ebon Twin Hammer of (non-max) Enchanting. Great. Thanks. You don't think maybe that oozy creep might have left some GOLD in there? Maybe a gem, too? A single freakin' gem?? I've tripped over unguarded chests on the beach that have contained better loot than this! With gems! And gold!
To sum up - if you're gonna buff the run because people aren't playing the game the way you think they should, then buff the rewards for people who DO play it properly! Stick and carrot, people... stick and carrot...
Peace.

one thing I have to say is all you Freaking chest runners destroyed some aspects of HoS. Especially the mentioned secondary objectives like killing Magmus Its still possible but a hell of a lot harder then before. requiring at least 4 people to effectively kill that boss. Where as 2 could do it in a matter of a few mins before. The Keg delay has effectively made this the hardest boss in the game. as its invincible except for kegs and has spike skills that is near impossible to interrupt.
He spams [skill]liquid flame[/skill] and [skill]Savannah Heat[/skill] almost nonstop while trying to keg him. wait for the next keg to come he regens his health...
Cyndr the Mountain Heart is a push over in comparison. so Thanks a lot for your constipating (yes Constipating!!! as in full of SH!T) and incessant exploiting of the game to ruining it for legitimate players.

TBH I dont really see how this overly hurt the game so many people did and COULD do it that it was spread to all and so many could benefit, it brough more rarer items into the game (which imo is good ).
As said above onyx prices will now go up, this run wasnt really hurting and has been the ONLY thing in GWEN i found fun even if I only got one day of it ah well back to leaving PvE again ^^

To the guy compaining about the chest drops - if it ALWAYS had to give something good you would be in the same situation all over again - no one wants to play other content and everyone wants to play one dungeon ad nauseum. Then someone works out the best way, then it gets too easy because all use the cookie cutter, then Anet decides the rewards are out of kilter, and the circle goes around again. Maybe the better result would have been to tone down the drops rather than make acess harder.
To the guy compaining about Chest Running the mission. Give it up - if someone sees a $50 bill lying in a deserted city street do they leave it there hoping that the someone else that picks it up will be the rightful owner - or do they stuff it in their pocket and say WOOHOO.
I don't expect that really needs an answer does it? The game is built about looking for advantage - in builds, in teams, in synergy - just finding what works really really well. Well they found a good one and its now over - nuff said.

For the record HoS does not have a chest when killing magmus. its a boss kill and a skill cap. and he is near impossibile ot kill. indeed I doubt many will be able to kill it, certainly not alone. not now... maybe 3 or 4 people... we did it with 6 and it was a real pain in the ass to do as we all had to stack up kegs and attack at same time then wait again till everyone had a keg and do it again. anything less he just regens back to full health. between keg spawns.
and No there is NO chest to exploit when doing this. Just a potential green drop, and a Skill cap.

=HT=Ingram:
Yes, the runners highlighted a way to get good rewards with minimum effort, and frankly I don't mind the keg-nerf in the slightest - didn't use them myself, so maybe that's why.
The issue (I feel) is more that the response didn't deal with the issue. Runners would do the dungeon by avoiding all combat up to Magmus, and then keg-spamming/rezing/repeat until everything was dead. The keg-nerf dealt with the keg-spamming quite effectively and I applaud it - it was a no-skill/no-brain effect and we're better off without it.
But the run down there is still every bit as straightforwards as it always was. Sure, you have to chuff a bunch of skelks by the doors, but really that's nothing. You still don't have to deviate off the path, you still don't have to deal with any bosses - nothing. Instead of making the run to Magmus more challenging, which would have dealt with the 'running' issue, they instead buffed Magmus himself to ungodly levels.
Magmus himself was *never* the problem with the HoS running. Getting to him and using Bludger to kill him and his minions was the problem. I can't claim to know Magmus' stats, but I'd say around 1200 HP, 120AL, +60 vs Elemental seemed about right before the buff. Sounds like a reasonably solid boss to me. But now.... now.... now he's some kind of deity-level uber-Ooze with *at least* 10,000 HP (probably more, I completely lose track against him now). Insane.
Is he still killable? Yes, eventually, and with luck, and with more effort than I had to put into the Lich and Shiro (no relation) combined. Good grief, I took the Great Destroyer without breaking stride but this squidgy little play-doh reject now makes ole' GD look like a Juvenile Termite!
As I've said before, I'm not against the idea of a strong challenge, but challenges need rewards, and the way it stands this one just isn't worth it.
Peace.
