Announcing GWLP
Divinitys Creature
Kudos. I personally don't have a problem with this idea if someone bought a key.

All right, going to move this to Community Works actually. No comment on legality here unless someone from Anet contacts me I'll allow it. It's not, per say, a private server but at the same time raises questions. I imagine it's Anet who has to decide what they'll allow as I know we've been contacted in the past for things much more minor then this and asked to remove posts that were questionable. That doesn't mean this will be, more of a heads up if you just happen to see this disappear and have questions.
Very awesome project though.

I seriously doubt Anet would sue these guys.... hire them is much more likely. It's the same as with any software; if someone manages to crack it, he/she is hired so that the company will learn from them.
I would like a bit of "extremeness" in a parallel GW. I'd be a bit put off by a monthly fee though. I wouldn't feel GW much.
Still, great job. Tell us when we can go and kill lvl 28 charr in pre... solo as a lvl 50

Wow it would be pretty nice to see this finished and able to download. I will soon again be out on deployment and it would be nice to be able to play sum sort of GW like game with other people aboard my ship.

you have got to stick me down as a beta tester if you need +1 And i think it's a brilliant idea.

I would be highly cautious about this project, both in terms of its legality and the safety of your accounts and personal data.
Perhaps ANet will take an interest in this project, and release a private server module as GW1 winds down... but until I hear something official from ANet, I wouldn't touch this project with a ten-meter cattle prod.

NC Soft owns GuildWars ^^
You should know every law around the legality for this project, before even thinking about going on with it.
Something about legal rights.
You get the map zone info on client side, this info is gained from a transmission between client/server.
Rules of conduct #18 states:
You will not attempt to interfere with, hack into, or decipher any transmissions to or from the servers running Guild Wars.
So this means, everyone using the GWLP tool upon playing on retail GW is breaking that rule.
And the same goes for rule #21
# You will not create, use, or provide any server emulator or other site where Guild Wars may be played, and you will not post or distribute any utilities, emulators or other software tools related to Guild Wars without the express written permission of NC Interactive, NCsoft Europe, or NCsoft Corporation.
Since you are part of the GWLP developer team, by using a tool and providing info to them for making a server emulator, your breaking the rule.
The guys who released the tool are not.
And lets face one thing, this is a server emulator, since it will serve as a real server to which the original GW client can connect to.
I'm sure of that Ajaala got his back clean, but I know as well, that people using his tool to gather info won't.
So players will have a risk on getting their accounts permanently banned and in worst case getting a law suit from NC Soft.
What bothers me, is that the OP doesn't notify the players of it from start.

You asked about the permissability of this project, and I'd like to respond:
With any project of the nature of this server emulator, the primary concern of the game developer is piracy. Our view on this project is that it must assure that the emulator can only possibly be used by people who own a legitimate copy of Guild Wars and that those using the server emulator have access only to the content that they have purchased. For instance, users should not be able to access maps, professions, skills, or any other content from a campaign they do not own. If at any time we find that the emulator is being used for piracy or to access official Guild Wars content that was not purchased through NCsoft or ArenaNet, we will pursue its closure.

Yes some people may, but the GWLP team at the moment isn't planning on that. They're not planning to release the emulator software until they can guarantee that nothing like that will happen (something I remember from ragezone)

#20 You will not attempt to play Guild Wars on any server that is not controlled or authorized by NC Interactive or its designees.
So you are saying that this server is or will be controlled or authorized by NC Interactive or its designees, as long as it is like retail and the players playing on it got legal Guild Wars keys? :O
*Wonders*What is the difference then in playing on the real thing compared to play on that one?

You know Mineria, the one thing you shouldn't do is tell ANet and Gaile that they don't know what their EULA is about.
That just reeks of disrespect.
Anyway, they are able to authorize it just by acknowledging it without condemning it. That's a shaky legal defense, but it's definitely a defense.

Slightly different to what I said but the same general thread. ANet are being nice people and letting this play out, therefore it's temporarily legal

For this to work you must still use your access keys and you are still limited to the content you have purchased. I suppose user created content would be interesting but other that that you might as well be playing the game officially.
Maybe ten years from now when they close the servers this will be useful, but honestly, who will still be playing GW1 at that point?

But the guys coding on it will at least learn some coding and game design.
I know that I did on an other project.

Thank you for responding Gaile, I'd like to post a comment from the project lead for you and everyone else interested in the project.

Instead we aim to allow users to develop their own quests, their own missions, their own Guild Wars themed sandbox. Our server will be in no way a replacement for the official server, even if players who did not own the official chapters were to play on it, they would not be playing Guild Wars or taking part in the Guild Wars experience.
That said, we plan to implement an authorization system that allows players access to only the content they have purchased. The authorization system will run in the background when you log into your official account, it will monitor incoming packets and read what you have access too on your account. It then encrypts this information and sends it to the server you wish to play on, the server immediately stores it in the database and allows you to use only the content that you own. The data that is gathered for authorizing a player can in no way be used to find that person's official account. This project is being developed by and for Guild Wars fans, we hold both ArenaNet and Guild Wars in high regard and would hate to harm the community in any way. We believe our project to be only beneficial and not at all a substitute for playing on the live servers. We hope to maintain a good relationship with ArenaNet. |

If you guys can provide a pvp/gvg environment of Prophecies/Core classes and skills only I WOULD PAY TO USE YOUR SERVER and know some others would too.
If you need any help with testing please contact me.
Great work guys, as networker I have quite a few code-monkey friends and know the exhaustive amount of working programming is, even if its just using VB and line code language is much more time intensive.
Good luck and I hope to hear more about this in the future.
Excellent work and hats off =].

Hmmm....A few questions then....
Loot tables in a "Private" server...can these be tweaked so that say... A grawl will drop an ecto on every kill?
Can a player that logs in to this "Private" server then move to Official servers with all the loot gained on the "Private" one still in the players inventory?
My concerns are more about how this affects the current game....

Hopefully when the GWLP is finished it will be an effective tool to keep players busy until GW2 comes out!

You open the database scheme with the sql editor.
Then you look for the grawl's name in the monster table or what ever they named it.
There will be another column with ID's, which might be a number.
You remember that number.
Then you take a look in the item table.
You find the ID for ecto and remember that one as well.
Now you only need to go to the droplist, add the monster ID, item ID, drop chance and amount of ectos dropped.
Drop chance adjustment can be a bit delicate, depends on how the system is build up, but nothing that can't be calculated.
If you get used to it you start to make querys instead, way faster to work with.

Call me crazy, but I'm really excited for when GW releases it's program to the PC sector, where no server will be required... There will be alot more you can do with it, and you could finally raise the level cap!!! lol

For my case I stick to the real Guild Wars.

I love this project, and kind of had an idea for a PvP server where everyone played with bosses like Shiro etc ;P
Could you possibly explain how hard making a skill would be?

You need to assign it a unique ID and link it to already established bonuses (such as 33% IAS).
I'm not sure how hard it would be to link it to the game client, without knowing how these guys are coding.

This project looks amazing! I could play around in Sandboxes all day!
Good luck with it, can't wait to play it x.x
EDIT: I always wondered what it would be like working in GW, spawning Shiro and Glint in the same room then making them duke it out.
Would you be able to do this in GWLP? I'm drooling just thinking about epic boss battles!!

If everything in the GWLP is going to be home-grown "sandbox" style content and not official GW content, then what's the need for the authentication that allows you to only play content you've purchased, when you can't play official content on the server anyway?
I don't get it...
