Character Names

That kinda comment somewhat disturb me. I've always been from freedom of speech, and as long as it doesn't offend anyone in some kinda manners I'm still trying to find words for ("I Hate <insert whatever human stereotype here>" would be an example of stuff I'd report)... it doesn't matter to me.

Which is why I don't see why "Punk Azz <profession>" was reported. Barely offending. "Ass" itself isn't really offending.

But in the end, it really depends of the context...

Ass. Unless it's R-rated [sex/rape/F-bomb] or racist, you should leave the person alone.

get a few of your friend to /report that character, then you get a 3 day break, come back, and change yoru character name with enough report it should work

This may be tangential to the topic at hand, but I really don't understand the appeal of dumb names like the one in question here. I don't ever RP; but giving a character a name like that doesn't make any sense to me. All the character names that I use are something that a person might actually be called as a name.

I doubt there are many people who use something like "Punk Azz Monk" as their name on a daily basis.

Those are some names I've seen, similar ones exist in the thousands. Not everyone has an actual 'name'.

My necro and my assassin are the only one with "names" (Cheran Doher N/X, Kotarou Fuuma A/X). Rest have somewhat silly names, like my dervish (The Xandervish) and my paragon (The Xandergasm). I don't feel the need to give them regular names... I guess I just see them as avatars that I fight with and can dress with pretty/kickass armors x].

Assasin Penguin is a normal name right!?

No but seriously, don't want problems.
Don't do stupid names.

Give em real names, the entire point was to have a First and Last name for your character.

People don't get banned for silly names even if they're not particularly creative.

This really boils down to how much you're trying to push the envelope on a name that's borderline offensive, sexual, or anything else that might be considered unacceptable. It's also really easy to stay within the bounds of good taste and still be creative.

But people will always choose to flirt with that edge. And then complain when they get caught. This isn't free speech, people. It's their game. You don't like getting banned because of your name then take it up with them or don't play the game. Or sack up and think up a creative name instead of some way to squeeze in some implied innuendo.

Look at it this way - if you would get sent to the principal's office for saying the name of a character in a middle school, then it probably wouldn't be acceptable here.

If GW stated names should be names instead of idiotic statements it'll be fine. They're games that're older and longer running than GW with better control of things than GW. It's also one of the reasons can call this a role playing game.

Apparently enough people. I warn members of my alliance that their names might get them in trouble in the future. That's as far as I care to get involved in the personal naming habits of other people. Even kids can be held accountable for their own creations.

A-net cannot force the idea of real names down your throat, that is part of Freedom of Speech.

You can use phrases just not inappropriate crap

I don't understand it either why people insist on running such stupid character names... Name your characters like you'd name your children or so (ok, maybe not completely... add in some kind of fantasy-touch...)

Sorry, but Guild Wars is not really a roleplaying game. People should be allowed phrases. Jokes on ritualist ashes can be creative and not make sense for a real name. This is getting offtopic though.

You assume the ROLE of a character and PLAY as that character. You're also in a fantasy setting w/ magic, warriors, monsters, etc - that's good enough for me.

Anyway - just stick to naming your character something you'd actually see a person named, and you'll be ok.

On another note - I recall a newspaper article some time ago that the Australian government refused to allow a couple to name their kid something unusual... I can't recall what, though.

It's a game. A game with MINOR customization beyond weapon and armor choice, and no character buildup. The game is far too linear for actual roleplaying. It's my characters, I should be able to name them whatever I want outside of offensiveness.

People get shut down for all sorts of things simply because a few complain. Never mind the vast majority of people who seem to have no problems with it. The banning of accounts in Guild Wars is merely a small subset of this issue that affects all of society, so apparently ArenaNet is on the bandwagon too.
