Festival Hat idea :)
MagmaRed
As we all know, the Festival Hats have no armor and no insignia slot. They are merely a way to look different and 'festive'. However, many of us like the way the hats look, and would like to use them all the time. To prevent people from gaining unfair bonuses, and to prevent people from gaining free armor, I have an idea to make the Festival Hats into armor!
New NPC, similar to the Festival Hats guy that lets you make the hats for any character. For a fee, and crafting materials, he can turn a Festival Hat you already own, into a piece of armor.
1) Cost = 5k
2) Materials = vary based on hat type (Yule Cap could be Cloth and Fur, for example)
3) Armor - same as hero armor, based on class and level of character.
4) Insignia slot and rune slot open, but not used.
5) Dye - same as the normal Festival Hat - some can be dyed, some can't
So you won't have a Monk wearing 80+20 AL headgear at level 1. It would require the person to have gotten the hat on at least 1 character, and pay for the armor version of the hat.
People who don't want an armor version, pay nothing, and have the same thing they always have had. People who want to use the hats in combat, not can look the way they want, and still be as effective in combat. Since it costs money and materials, it isn't allowing people to get free armor.
Since the skin is already in the game, this should be an easy thing to implement, as there is little 'new' stuff to add. But it would allow the people who love the hats to use them more often without sacrificing effectiveness.

Already suggested many times. Yet still I always agree with this, as long as the prices are sensible ones.

Perhaps they could also use this to allow us to have similar hats to past festivals we weren't able to attend. And no, I don't mean give us the witches hat, just a witches hat. One with a big sign on it that says I didn't attend Halloween '06 in Kamadan.
Anyhoo, signed for the original idea. My Dervish looks pretty good in her '07 Dwayana Wreath, it would be nice to use it.

An excellent idea, Magma. The cost is placed neatly below elite armors yet above normal armors; and is neither prohibitive nor dirt cheap.
You've thought this through nicely.

It's would a bother to see some mad guys going around with the Lion hat...
...but being able to use a Ritualist or RangerAncient armor with the Mummy mask pays for all of that.

I prefer the hats being nothing more than a silly little novelty for the festivals. If you could use things like the Snowman hat inplace of regular armour, people would be wearing them all the time, instead of just at the festivals, and they'd lose a lot of their charm, IMO.

They just wear what they like.
That's reason enough to add them.

I also have thought of a way to make it easy on Anet to add. The variable armor level based on level of the character may be hard to implement. If so, just make the NPC who crafts them in a place with max armor. Droknar's Forge, Kaineng Center, and Consulate Docks. If a player can already craft max armor there, this just gives an alternate skin.

I think the 10g goldsink for the cosmetic, armor-free festival hat should stay in place, but I'd pay and actually show my headgear if I could do this.

Although there are few, if at all festive hats I'd like to wear in battle. I would just love to see my team mates be able to wear one, though. It gives more variety of characters in a team.

I don't think this will ever be implemented, but if it does, this seems to be the fairest and most logical idea.
MithranArkanere
Yup. Maybe some masks would look a bit dumb, but some of them would look great, just like the Eye of the North headgear.
Necromancers with the Zombie makeup, ritualist with Mummy Mask and the Ancient armor, Water elementalists with the Ice Crown, warriors with the Grasping Mask and the Primeval armor...
That kind of things fit quite fine.
The problem with adding armor is making piece models and fitting them with AAAALL the rest of the pieces, but mask models are already made.

Figured since the thread for rezed, and hats are in discussion, and more hats will be coming in Wintersday, I'd add a poll. Still think this idea would be fairly easy to implement, and could add more gold sinks and variety both to the game. Masks from GW:EN show it is possible to make them universal for all classes, only problem is keeping them out of reach of low level characters, but that is a MINOR problem, as it is only 1 piece of armor.

at first i didnt like the idea, but now i have read it better, i think it would be a great idea.
personally i dont like any of the festival hats or "GW:EotN" non armor set head gear(I.E: Blind Fold, Bandanna, Sun Glasses etc), but each to there own, and of course not evry1 wants to be running around in serious armor all the time, i sometimes take a break on my necro by using the scarecrow mask(looks great with my armor, other then that i never liked it before that)

Anet spends time making the masks ect then throws a HUGE party for them with like minigames and quests and items to get, then everyone forgets about them as soon as they got them.
I really like the idea, i think the prices are right and the idea is just waiting to be used.
The only thing i think should change is that they should only be made available to level 20 chars. Sure, you could put low AL ones in the erlier cities and then progressivly raise the AL as you progress through the game BUT if you place the max ones in Consulate Docks, Kaineng Center and Droknars Forge, you would end up with level 1s running around with them. Those cities are easy to get runs to (minus Kaineng, im not sure you can get a run there) so you would have low-level characters getting them.
If you make it so you can only get them as of level 20 however you loose that.
Just my thoughts
i think its a great idea though
~Lies
EDIT: If you think about it, the masks are already common and the property (or whatever its called :P) to make the EoTN masks common MUST have been based in some way on this.
All anet needs to do really is just make them have insigna slots and +1 to items attribute on them with a trader ect and then its done...
This shouldnt be hard AT ALL to implement...
Dout theyll do it though

The festival hat NPC is already there they could add a trade opption for armored and insignia with +1 attributes to the hats based on runes as well.
5k and the 10g hat plus, common and rare materials in exchange for a max armored hat with, open insignia slot, and +1 attribute according to Runes like those in EotN.

Ok everyone, it's obvious we have a near unanimous vote for the idea. Does anyone know how we can petition this straight to Anet? We should get this to light as much as possible if we all want this to take function.
MagmaRed
It was my idea, and yet I'll say it is too early for your idea. Doesn't matter how unanimous the poll might be, it matters how many people participated in it. However, PMing Regina or emailing Anet with a link to this thread would probably be enough. Only thing you'd be able to do is ask them to look at the idea. This forum was designed for them to review ideas from their customers, but with the reduced GW1 staff, I'm not sure they do that anymore.

If Anet wanted festival hats to act as armor, the hats would already be serving that purpose instead of waiting this long to change it.
