Easy way to get wintersday 2007 hats!
arcanemacabre
I really have no problem with this. However, it does strike me as odd that they would only do this for the most recent hats, and not all hats. So, second chances, but only for the hats that were given out two days ago? Just plain odd.

Add this feature to get all hats Arenanet!
People who just bought the games recently would love to have the previous hats.
And those of us who have played a long time but had to miss a specific event would love to complete our collection.

Silly... but *shrug* no different from them letting you get the dragon festival hats a week after the finale which they already did.

Here is your official answer:
There was a very real problem with the Wintersday event. You can read about that here. The issues were related to a non-functional server (on our end, quickly solved) and a provider problem on the part of a provider working through the LA Data Center (which I think may still exist). The problem is, all games are authenticated through LA, so that's a major issue. The provider problems were so great, some people actually lost their Wintersday hat during the event.
In the interests of assuring that those who had received a hat would be assure that they could keep that hat, we considered making it possible for them to re-obtain the hat by some sort of system that established that they were present in the event. That, however, wasn't quite adequate, as some players would have been disconnected prior to the hat-giving portion, or may have been simply discouraged from attending to begin with. Therefore, to benefit the greater number of players, we are offering the hats through January 8th, with our apologies for any inconvenience.
This situation has a minor parallel, in that last year some players in Taiwan were affected by an earthquake in their region. However, that was a very localized problem, and the amendments that we made were appropriately restricted to the region in question. Because of the LA Data Center's key role in all games, this year's issue was broader, and we felt that it required an amendment with a larger scale.
We feel that by limiting the acquisition of the hats to a few days, we are retaining the specialness of the hats while showing those who had issues the consideration they deserve. We do not intend to offer hats from previous events; this is a special situation that deserves special arrangements.

Okay, everyone take a deep breath. Yelling about the hats, the bear, and the end of the evwnt will do nothing. If you want something to yell about, come to my house and try sleeping through the sounds of these RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing gerbils that my mother in law bought for my kids for Christmas. They run on the exercise wheel half the night. Argggghhhh....

hey now I actually LIKE my mother in law....
but getting back to the point.....many people did lose out on the hat (me included) because of disconnects, however; MANY people who never even thought about going to the finale can now get something that was supposed to be for that day ONLY.....and anet said they would never do something like that.....maybe they should have just had an extra few finales for those who missed out?? (like they did for taiwan last year).
Just not handled correctly I think.

However, I don't see what the 'specialness' is. Are we talking about items from a fun event that people use to remind themselves of of a great festival, or elitist markers people use to show how much better they are than everyone else who couldn't attend?

However, one might argue that if that's important to some, so much so that they would argue against others having these hats, they might also need a reality check.

And I've said it in this thread before, but I completely agree with Gaile. They're doing this because of the SERVER issues, many people who were there missed out on hats through no fault of their own. Okay, so some people who didn't bother to attend the event will now be able to get them, but I don't think there's much that can be done about that, and again, this isn't the first time they've done this.

Hmm, since the rules have apparently changed, I'd like to get my 2005 grenth antlers back (had to delete them long, long ago to save storage space... way before the hat maker came on the scene).

Great!
I can get a hat! wooohooo! Argh, New Year usually proves most difficult for me to be online, and hats are given then every year grr. So this is great news ty.
ps: If I ever become a serial killer, people like Eldin will be on my list! Oh joy!
pps: To all people here who think they become "special" and "cool" because they have an item in a fictional online game - well guess what, you're not. To become cool and special you need to become impressive people with real qualities worth mention (read: virtue).

Yay @ this update.
Ouchie
All Hats from All past events should be available that day too. Make it fair to those who weren't able to be around or who crashed out before this last Wintersday as well.
Neo Nugget
Well, i think it's a good idea, but I wish I would have known earlier, but i guess they couldn't expect the servers would crash and lag.
Oh well i got them.
Oh well i got them.
Dallcingi
Guess this is how they repay people for lag.
And those people on vacation.
And those people on vacation.

This solution really gets me going. I collect hats and seem to remember dubious info on canthan newyear last year. Everybody thought is was another day and a lot of ppl missed out on the hats. Serious begging with Anet didn't help, I should have read it better. No hat. Sorry. And now ppl can just go out and get hats!? where was this solution earlier!?
Rocky Raccoon
The immaturity and selfishness on this forum is unbelievable. How does it hurt anyone that someone gets a hat that has no use in game. There was a problem with the event and this will fix it for those who lost out.
Tachyon
Shame they didn't implement this idea for the Canthan celebration with the Lion Masks. I had a problem where after I'd shown the mask to the "Festival Hat Maker" he refused to make me another one for any characters. As such, I'm left without the Lion mask even though I got it and showed it to the correct person.

I'm turning this into a public reminder -
There are no exceptions to the rules on flaming and trolling forum members, and these members include Gaile Gray. You can disagree with her, and you can even make personal commentary to an extant that is still civil. You'll find that there are moderators who do so freely, and unashamedly, as well as those who are ardent supporters. (Read a PvP forum, and this difference of opinion is especially obvious.)
We don't take sides on this - the rules on civility are universal.
Additionally, if you've had a post deleted and no message saying why, contact a moderator or administrator and ask them before reposting. It is generally encouraged that moderators PM posters explaining why specific posts are removed, but depending on the moderator's time and workload, this is not always feasible - IE, in a thread with 20 posts deleted after turning into a flamefest, it simply may not happen.

I WAS a player until the end of this event. And at every ANET fail, I have been and so have many others been told over and over again too bad soo sad.. From the First Dragon Festival taking the pets to the pre-release of GW:EN (expansion pack) not supporting video cards that the core games do.
Gaile gets as good as she gives. Get snarky with me, and I will give it right back.
Gaile Grey is public relations, public relations = cleanup crew for the company
and that my friends is not being here for the players.

No point in leaving, I stay and voice my thoughts in hopes that a game I truely loved playing will once again become a game I love playing.
You are angry with me because I voiced my thoughts? Because I dare stand up to the great and mighty Gaile Grey? I'm not angry with you, or anyone else on these forums. I am annoyed that it is cool for Gaile to be snarky to me, but not for me to return it.
You have refused time and time again to reply to thoughtful posts on the topic about why others think what has happened is wrong, and only choose to reply to OT stuff.. maybe you should either back up your thoughts, with vaild points to those of us who are pointing out what we believe is wrong, or sit down, and be quiet till you have something worthwhile to say.
Telling ppl to leave is not helping you anymore than my snarky-ness is helping me. :P

Easy way to get wintersday 2007 hats!
Thank you, OP for informing us (me, at least). I really didn't mind that I couldn't be here for the event (too busy spending time with family and friends), but I like being able to get them just the same.
Yichi
just wtf kind of consideration do you want for losing a pet that happened over a year ago?
It happened to many others and youre the only one left in the world that still holds a grudge against it. Everyone else just went out and capp'd a new pet. So lets see... If youre the only one whose opinion is this way, everyone else is refuting you... I would think that would make you wrong. But forgive me for having logic.....
