How2Fix PVP
Tiyuri
This is something I've been wondering about since the start of factions, it seems like such an obvious thing to implement, part of me wonders why it's not already there. I'm going to try and lay out my suggestion in a constructive way and I ask that you post on it in a constructive manner.
What's prompted me to finally post this suggestion is a poll I posted here:
http://guildwars.incgamers.com/forum...d.php?t=457499
Which details why players choose not to PVP. The overwhelming response was the "elitist attitudes" of the community, i.e. - they want to play with and AGAINST their friends. Right now they're able to do this through scrimmaging, but scrimmages are severely limited in what they're able to do, currently PVP in Guild Wars is a "you against the world" scenario, the problem with this being a lot of players don't want to deal with the world, they simply want to play with their friends, not only that but the less skilled players among us have trouble finding players to play against at their skill level.
So what I'm suggesting is expanding the scrimmaging options available to players, as well as removing some of the barriers that get in the way of fun, less competative play.
Guest Invites
First of all, having to pay 100g to invite players to your hall in order for them to scrimmage you is a pretty large barrier, and a needless one I think, I understand the need for the 100g restriction on players you wish to guest with your guild in regular ladder/AT based GVG. However this charge should be separate from simply inviting someone to your Guild Hall to scrimmage. I suggest the addition of a free "Invite Visitor" function, this would enable a person to visit your hall and/or scrimmage you, but restrict them from entering ladder or automated tournament GVG with your guild.
These visitor invites should also be permanent until removed manually.
This also turns your Guild Hall into more of a social hub for your friends, a place people can find you, it gives the Guild Hall more of a purpose.
Lack of Game Types
Right so once we have players in our hall, what can we do? Well we can GVG... on one map. First of all GVG as a gametype pretty much requires 8 players on each team to be worth playing. Second, that one map is going to get dull very very fast if you don't enjoy playing "public" PVP.
GVG as a gametype doesn't really support casual play, and yet it's the only gametype available for casual scrimmaging.
When setting up a scrimmage, you should first be able to choose a game type, including GVG, Relic running, Arena matches, Kill count and so on. After selecting a game type you should be able to choose a map for that game type. All these maps would exist in the game already for minimal required work, i.e. relic run maps from HA, arena maps from Random Arenas.
Lack of Custom Rules
Lots of players enjoy playing by their own rules, that's why modding and servers running their own rules in popular FPS pvp games often thrive beyond those running standard rules.
Lots of players have mixed feelings regarding certain skill sets, certain game mechanics, certain methods of play. Allowing players to filter these out in a private setting is a good thing, whilst preserving the integrity of a set style of play in public.
Players have been begging for 1v1 for example, since the start of Guild Wars. Whilst this style of play can't be competative for balance reasons, there's no reason to disallow those players who'd enjoy playing it to do so.
We could alter the number of players in these gametypes, 6v6 Arena anyone? Don't have the players? np, set it to 3v3!
Flexability, as long as it stays inside your Guild Hall, is a GOOD thing.
Benefits
Apart from just creating a whole new casual game for those of us who are fed up with the drama of the guild ladder, and those players who just want to play amongst friends. You open up the possibility of external tournaments being hosted, possibly with prize money.
You also give new players a method of learning to play PVP, something that is sorely lacking in the current game. Being able to play against players strictly of the same level - or better players that rather than roll you, will teach you, is the best practice there is.
Here's hoping my suggestion is considered, I'd like to hear constructive thoughts on the subject, frankly even if they just added the choice of arena maps without all the settings and extras, there'd be a new - very fun - method to play Guild Wars in a casual way.
Cheers.

100% agree witf your idea often wanted to play like this with my friends, tournament hosting for alliance etc.
tho i think that 1v1/2v2/3v3/4v4/... etc. in hall is not really needed, as there is 8v8 max, and you can enter in with any ammount of players you want(except if you idea maybe was that if 2 players would go 4v4 for ex. will then get 3 henchies on each side?). anyway, this would really make pvp life easier for loads of players im sure

Very very good idea, should have been implemented a long time ago. One thing you just forgot to add is hero battle, as not being able to do that with my friends when I want to really ticks me off.
edit: put this in riverside where people actually give a damn about ideas lol.

Hopefully we will see something like this in GW2.
It would be a great way for new players to learn PvP in a friendly environment.
And it would be just plain fun.
Choices FTW!

With all of the suggestions for the game that you have made in the past being implemented (hint hint, Tiyuri deserves to be on the ArenaNet payroll), it would actually surprise me if this, eventually, does not find a way into the game itself in some form. Your ideas for adding depth to the game are solid, well planned, and backed with actual logic (which is always a good thing).
Something like this would probably add a lot of longevity to Guild Wars, and honestly, would make me much more inclined to purchase GW2 come '09/'10. I can see a problem arising on fan forums, such as GWG/GWO, where players would complain about the "balance issues" in the new gametypes, but that'd be more of an issue for the volunteer moderation crews and less of a problem for the people that actually matter when it comes to those things (i.e. Izzy), and wouldn't be a big enough issue to even warrant consideration (in short, QQ moar, emo scrubs).
Games like CS have survived for ages due in part to the fact that you can start the game and hop right into it; no need for a pre-set team, no need for VoIP, no need to even have various information regarding equipment and skills memorized (though it helps to know which guns suck and when to 'nade). Guild Wars, at one time, advertised something similar, but there is currently no real form of casual PvP available to players (especially the current PvE-only players and/or/including those that feel AB is actually "PvP").

also under game type you can put in sealed deck scrimmages

Constructive Fixes / Ideas:
-Needs Eye of the North skills in the image (i know you made it before EotN so...)
-Add Balthazar Faction as an optional cost for Guests.
-Add all Guild Halls to the map list (8v8 on RA maps = O.O )
-Add Sealed Deck play. (very awesome!!)
The only bad thing I can see is everyone sticking to this, I would probably quit doing all GvG if I could have standard 8v8 Prophecies only classes with the original VoD.

The only reason its 100g for Guest invites, is that Anet doesn't know how to balance the economy than taxing the PvPers. 100g may not seem like much, but when you have strict PvPers (meaning: we don't PvE) Money runs out pretty fast. Especially when you're running through 4-10 guests per day, and no one wants to buy gold. /my2cents
I guess these changes would be ok, although I would probably never use them. (Who wants a 60 minute VoD counter? Not allowing DP? What the heck?)

PARTICULARLY the visitors idea, there are a lot of people I like to hang out with who are all in different guilds, it would bring us closer together if we could set up a network like that.

This idea is brilliant. I always thought the scrimmage feature should be expanded, but I never got around to properly getting my ideas down. I guess I don't need to anymore, you suggested everything I would've, and plenty of things I didn't even think of (in particular the "visitor" feature).

i think that the problems of the pvp is that new players cant get used to it 9 theyll need skills and armor upgrades which takes a very long time unlock and its kinda boring ) itll be very good if we earn balth faction more in RA and TA so that we can unlock the skills and upgrades quicker ( or the current price can be lower ) and another idea why not allow everybody to participate in the alliance battles , just if u have only 1 chapter u will be able to play with skills from it , wont be any different

maybe this could even be expanded to the point where there was a ranked/unranked (sets VoD and DP automatically) button and ladders for the respective team sizes, so that those who wanted to be competitve could be with out needing 8 people

WoOt! that's fkin amazing!
Great idea, really. It would be useful for all kinds of players, those just starting their PvP experience just as highly competetive ones.
And it shouldnt be hard to implement:
-it's an improved interface window many elements of which we already got
-starting instances on chosen map under chosen rules shouldn't be hard to do either - the game already does that and this is just changing some variables
-adding the checks for legal professions and skills would be a new thing but also seems very simple. And adding such checking mechanism would be a big step towards Sealed Play! (just add a random skill pool generator then)
Now there's 1 little thing I'd like to change - the number of players per team setting (1v1 / 2v2 / 3v3 ...) into MAXIMUM number of players per team, so it allows not balanced teams (just like current simple Scrimmages do).
And another improvement idea - Make it possible to start those scrimmages versus a team that's NOT in your but in another guild hall! Make it an improved Unrated Guild Challenge, instead of improved Scrimmage!
It would open up a ton of possibilities of creating tournaments or leagues and not having the teams see what their opponents are running before the start of the match! With any gametype and settings you want.
This could also reduce or even eliminate the need for separate Visitor invites.

Your most interesting idea is that of custom rules. People in the PvP community, and I mean mostly higher end, have been asking for such rules so they can do what is called "sealed deck". Custom rules would certainly allow for that.
