How2Fix PVP

If someone could convince me how PvP is "broken", I'll gladly /sign it.
Basically, all this does is allow easier testing for failure builds that bad players make up. It also gives bad players the ability to PvP. Other than that, I don't see the reason behind this.

Weren't these suggestions... really old (definitely older than January '08), and weren't they posted on TGH before? I wish there was a quick way they could implement this.

Who would be against this?
Choose arenas, choose rules, limit decks...
All good without downsides.

I hesitated posting on this thread because I do not pvp at all, but the thread has made me think why I don't take part.
Probably fear of making a fool of myself is there somewhere, but it's mainly because it appears so disorganised that puts me off.
I equate pvp to sports
In sports I am taking on other players/athletes in a contest of skill be it 1 on 1 or a team game.
Most organised sports have some kind of grading system that would prevent the top players and teams competing at a lower level.
So I guess I would be more likely to play pvp if I could play at my level and as I got better could move up to harder challenges.
It cannot be much fun for the champion pvp players to take on the likes of me all the time either.
If GW2 can come up with a good working pvp system I will be there

I had been browsing this thread and it made me reminisce about how I got into PvP -- through the Costume Brawl; yes, the Halloween event arena. Probably to this day, with myself being ranked into the Gladiator title track, the Costume Brawl was the purest fun I've had in pvp since I can remember.
And and now I'm imagining if that were a regular gameplay arena, where the builds were changed at the least once every week, ideally once a day. Now that would prove to be true casual pvp for the pve'r, and experienced pvp'rs tired of gimmick builds.

Reminds me of halo-like game creation style. I love it, actually.
GW's PvP system has a lot of potential to be even more fun, but i have always felt it kind of restrictive, being limited to HA/GvG/Arenas (HB and AB if you even want to consider that "PvP"). This would add a nice custom play-around touch to PvP.

I'm just gonna be annoying and (try to) counter argument it.. (could be weak as hell since I'm pretty tired ;p)
I don't think this will fix PvP ... its not like its broken because of lacking options at scrimmaging. It is something that will happen in a very closed community (splintered groups). Sure people will go mad with it at first, yay fun. After a while it will decline most likely, since it doesn't affect anything outside that little play. GvG/HB reflects on ladder play, tournaments and prizes. HA reflects on rank (dunno if 'reflects' is the right word but meh). All types get you some reward: faction. This can't be done with this feature - since it will obviously is easy to abuse. So yes, it might be fun at the start or some extra fun for a group of players (but hey so do snowball arenas), but no it will not help establish a new/fresh era of competitive play.
One exception I do agree on in the post: that if it gets interesting enough and there are playing types found among the players themselves that a larger group enjoy, that people might run tournaments with it. That is *if* certain game types appear better than the ones already offered now and is easy enough to set up such tournaments. Could be.. or not.
(Note: Customizable rules are good, can help the community to make their own competitive environment and look fun at first glance, but isn't always that great. The game is balanced for 8v8 originally, but just look at how 6v6 HA payed off for example.. and while 4v4 is doable I think everyone - or at least lots - would agree 8 is the magic number. Same goes for some other mechanics, it has put there with those values for a reason).
The elitist part is quite obvious, in any competitive play... I can't see advanced players in ladder clans/guilds in whatever game not looking at the worth of another player when looking to strengthen their team in order to secure victory (ugh talking about a bad sentence). It's not a GW problem, it's everywhere where people compete imo.. What is more of a problem is how it might be overwhelming with the amount of skills and the amount of unlocks new players have to cope with.
The learning curve for a new player is pretty high, but with this idea it won't really make it smaller/better: you still need (lots of) friends in Guild Wars, a Guild Hall and vast knowledge of the game with PvP.
The visitor thing? Does encourage more, but still seem pretty cumbersome. I'd rather see an advanced search thing perhaps were you can host a game type, waiting for a joining guild (or send an invite like nonrated matches) or search for game types/parameters that appeal to your group. Orrr.. just use the alliance feature?
Don't bash me straight away, try to read the little fuzzy words and odd sentences first and think about it for a bit. It's presented nicely with lots of more options for players (if you get something for free and more options for you its always good right).. but just consider if its really worth it and if it would really fix PvP. I doubt so.
(PS. I rather see them trying to fix some stuff that gets discussed in Gladiators Arena - without too much adding/new features.. and get these idea's from for example this thread and alllllll the things they've learned from GW1 into GW2).

One addition I wouldnt mind seeing is a free-for-all option...16 go in 1 comes out.

At this time, lots of PvErs would love to do some PvP... But most PvE guilds either don't PvP at all, or do some AvA or TA. A few of them, when they have enough interested players, do amical GvG, but that's pretty rare. This shows that most of them aren't thrilled by the ladder, but by the fun and the break from mobs.
As for myself, most of my guilds didn't PvP at all, and I have to RA. While it might be fun, it always makes me cry to see someone with running/tanking skills who just avoid the fight while they don't have a rez just to annoy people from both teams... And I could quote many other things.
When it comes to PvP guilds, most of then won't accept a PvEr who just wants to have fun-because that's what most want-but might not be really skilled, and prefers PvE with a little of "competitive" play threw in it.
This option allows PvErs (who are a majority) to play a casual and customizable PvP, and that's all it is about.

PvP and PvE takes a certain mind set. It is a reason why some people enjoy PvE and some people enjoy PvP. While this might be a funny feature that DOES get some people to do some more 'PvP' (scrimming vs friends?) it has hardly any great effect in my eyes. People who PvE and like to PvP would benefit more of finding the people with the same mind set (PvE and occasional PvP?) and play with them in the existing formats.
EDIT: Maybe I see it different.. but everything I go back to read the main post, I think the title is chosen badly. It doesn't give anything extra as lets say a Dragon Ball or Snowball Arena NPC in your Guild Hall ;p It's an additional 'fun feature', but nothing that will get loads of new players into PVP or new players in general.
I don't say the whole idea is bad, because there are surely some interesting points (that I believe are brought up earlier as well) but I think they should rather get this and many other suggestions over to GW2.

*sigh*
The people who say this will fix PvP.....you don't know what the problem with PvP is then.
The problem with PvP honestly isn't the balance or anything, its the dying PvP playerbase, which is what this would remedy by easing PvE'ers into the experience in a safe environment.

However, its an intriguing concept.
Can't 1v1 or w/e? Three east steps to setting up a scrimmage in your own guild hall. *incredibly amounts of sarcasm*
1) Find your opponent. Not an alliance member? guest them. can't afford to pay 100g? merch that blue FDS in your storage.
2) Set up your squad. i like Koss. heres his bar [AxACJSoVEAETAAAAAAAAA]. click the "Guild Battle" button to continue to the next step.
3) Create a new scrimmage and wait for your opponent to join in.
Agree upon the rules with your opponent. and.. if you dont have a 20.... pvp char slot
You can essentially do the majority of what the OP discussed already with.
If your finding a lack of variety in the maps you play on, you can always go to an alliance member's guild hall or guest at someone else's.
Allowing different maps (particularly Relic Runs) into a scrimmage mode is a neat idea though. I'm never mentally prepared for relic runs... however.. enabling this for scrimmaging sort of removes its uniqueness and surprise in HA.
I'm also a fan of the whole visitor's invite slot. although, and indefinite amount of time on the invite would give a very long list. an 8hr limit or less i think will still be fine. free? i don't think that's a great idea. perhaps have a cost of say..25g will be suffice.
and.. op.. great graphics work

You have some interesting Ideas here. I'd like to add some suggestions:
1. Since Guildwars PVP is supposedly balanced solely for 8v8 make RA/TA 8v8.
2. Make Guild affiliation Character dependent rather than account dependent. Why must all my toons belong to the same Guild. My guild is exclusively PVE, I like to PVP also. Why must I abandon my friends to play a new game type?
3. Replace disconnected players with equivalent template NPCs instead of the team just being 1 player short for the match(this would probably be work in PVE also).

The best part of the whole thing was within the custom rules, since Anet continually drops the ball on skill balance, and then promoting the death of the game with an 8 month down time of shitty ladder play +2/-2/+3/-3 while we waited for AT's which just put greater restrictions into the game. Although the excuse for making AT's was to make the game more customizable for the GvG format, it was just an excuse for Anet to waste vast amounts of time/resources developing it,(or simply put gave them an excuse that they were indeed working on something) I guess in reality they were brain storming for 8 months; and once finished just made Anet's job easier as it's automated now, leave and forget.
To date we have never had a core skills or, core+faction skills AT, nor one with a decent lineup of maps. This custom feature would have done wonders if it was implemented before they started their whole chapter/expansion campaign leaving us with broken skills for 3+ months a time. Too bad it's way too late now.

This would be a great addition towards PVP, not so much a fix. The Elitist attitude which is displayed by people is what keeps the few/somewhat remaining players playing. You have many good ideas but sadly the Developer team will prolly never see this post.
