Naming Characters
RamenFiasco
I name all my characters with sensible names, names that make sense. Nothing like Sweet Darkstone or random combinations that seemingly been picked out of a hat.
My resources would sometimes be from books that I read in the past, games, music, or world history. Like my derv's name is in Latin and my warrior's name is actually a song title.

Sabriel Benirus
Mine are mostly from the random name generator, and a few are from other games, or just being creative..
Henchman
The only rule I have is that the name does not give away the profession of the character, or what the character does. For example: "I Am Monk Prs Tab" or a Mesmer named "I Interrupt You". Names like these kind of a giveaway in PvP...
To bad I made that rule only after make my PvE monk who is named "Healer Heinchman"

Cure For Road Rage
i pick names that make me giggle looking at my chars, and thus make me want to play them. names like these:
a) Spider Webs R Poop
b) CureForRoadRage
c) H i t l e r s Lapdog (deleted for obvious reasons)
d) Scoobys Master
e) Britneys Brother

I just rolled a new fun name PVP toon called 'D is for Lysdexia'
Is that bannable?

Craywulf
I used some vague comic book characters names for inspiration, but I tweaked them with some fantasy flare. I also decided to have all my characters with the same secondary name.
My typical gamer callsign is Craywulf, I decided to use Wulf as secondary name. My primary character which is pictured in my Avatar is Azrael Of Wulf (N/Me).
Other Characters are;
Cray Of Wulf (E/Me)
Sylvia Of Wulf (R/N)
Tobruk Of Wulf (W/Me)
Obraegon... (P/D)
Rhiannon... (A/R)
Zhannah... (D/Mo)
Brande... (Me/W)
Anaykah... (Mo/E)
Persephonia... (RT/Mo)
One thing I tried to do is have a balance in genders and racial make up. 5 of 10 characters are males, the other half are females. 2 are black, 2 are Asian-looking. 2 blondes, 2 brunettes, 2 redheads, 2 black-haired, and 2 grayish-white haired. I've also tried to make variety in builds as no two characters have the same primary profession. I'm in the process of doing the same for the secondary professions.

Taninim Nurin
I had to dig to find this thread. I often have wondered, what stirs a person to create the character names they do. Personally, it depends on the feel of the character. Will she have a personality, will she develop an interlude or story with other gamers? Perhaps to much time on my hands.
First and foremost, the name "Taninim derives from Hebrew-meaning "sea monster, crocodile or large snake, and finally dragon". It is often regarded to mean the Leviathan. Taking a positive twist from the name, I added Nurin-Meaning "Of the light".
"Dragon of the light"

Musei Karasu
All my names are in romanized Japanese, due to the fact I spent quite a while learning how to speak and understand Japanese. Musei means voiceless, unvoiced, silent, noiseless, and such of the sort, and Karasu is the name in all of my names which I picked up when working on a book of mine, it means Raven. so silent raven is the name of my assassin. Oujou means death, so Death Raven is my Dervish. No, it's not grammatically correct, but it sounds good.
uby
i don't put too much thought into it. i usually find that if the name is too far on the RP side that it gets lame. for example, i have a survivor warrior sitting around unplayed for a year called Knight of Drascir. (Drascir was the capitol of Ascalon pre-Prophecies era)
I now think that's lame.
I'm currently playing an Imbagon named "I Am Easy Mode"
I used to have an ele named "Avatar of Energy" but she died halfway to r3 survivor, so she's sitting around naked not doing much of anything.
Necromancer named "Reclaimer of Souls" and Assassin named "Soul Burial" for similar themed names.

StormDragonZ
All of my characters end with Cervantes because he's my favorite Soul Caliber II character as well as my favorite book Don Quixote de la Mancha was written by Miguel de Cervantes.
My Lipgloss is Cool
Most of my names are from Everquest, the MMO I played before this (and still is one of the greatest games, ever) but I have a few different names, like my Paragon's name (Totally Imbalanced) and my Monk's name (Lord Russano)
The Red Messenger
I grab a book and flip through it for inspiration...
if that fails, i pick up the phone book or make stuff up

Owik Gall
There's quite a history to my name, actually. Quite frankly this is the character I generally use in PvE. It was based on another character from a different online rpg, Runescape. At first the name was Ochi, but then my account was hacked and I had to come up with a new name. I looked for inspiration and then I got it when I saw "A Knights Tale" starring Heath Ledger. Heaths 'knight' name was Sir Oric. At the scene where his rival went over the jousting records during the war he fought and said Orics name through the pages it sounded more like he said 'Owik' rather than 'Oric', so that's where I got the first name. The last name came from a single player rpg I also used to play (after I quit RS) called Neverwinter Nights, the first game. I just played around with the random name generator button and then one of the last names it generated caught me eye, 'Gall'. I even looked it up to see what it meant and it's a word meaning courage, or something brave and the ilk. I put those two names together and Owik Gall came to being in Neverwinter Nights. I stopped playing Neverwinter Nights, though because I hate how in each game there's a different story and therefore I had to change characters and I really wanted to keep playing Owik Gall throughout. That's when I came upon Guild Wars and got the impression that I can play him through all of the stories in the game, so I got it. And so, Owik Gall came into Guild Wars based on an inspirational character in "A Knights Tale" and a cool last name that was random in a different rpg. Sorry if that seemed to be a run on, or too much info, but hey, I did say there was a history to it.

I enjoyed hearing the tales your "Character" has ventured through. It shows that the character was within you (in my opinion) rather then part of one storyline or (game). NWN, always left me hungering for more. I hope to perhaps read the tales of Owik Gall one day.

Taisayacho
I usually go by Tai ingame, because my first Character and main is Tai Sayacho.
New ones are either:
Tai Something
Something Tai
or
Star of [something relating to profession]
And my monk is called Judge Sayacho II. Dare to be different.

Chosovi was a Dungeon Siege II character. When I had to come up with a second name for GW, I went looking for words with a Celtic, Anglo Saxon, or Norse feel in keeping with my own predilections, and with the northern European, medieval feel of Prophecies. Cuan translates as "little hound" or "little wolf," or so websites tell me, anyway. I liked that because it vaguely references some of my favorite stories about the Irish hero, Cuhulain, and because it's also a reference to the wolf companion that Cho had in DSII, and has in GW. (Okay, the wolves in both games are massive, not little, but ...oh well).
I adopted that as the surname for the extended family, as I thought it might make it easier for people to identify me, in game. Since hearing one of my guildmates have trouble pronouncing Chosovi, though, I've started trying to keep the first names either very short or easily abbreviated (for typed chat), and, I hope, easily pronounceable (for voice chat). So I've ended up with names like Selia, Una, and Nicolas.

Enko
I look up mythological characters that suit the profession and mix and match names for something I like.
Lady Lozza
I try to choose names that look like names for my PvE characters. Inspiration comes from the many name sites out there. I also try to stick to the "theme" of the campaign and character.
My mesmer, Luned, takes her name from a Welsh legend about a beautiful girl who had a magic ring that made her invisible.
My monk Rael, is an Eastern European version of Rachael - chosen because I wanted a simple, "rural" type name.
My dervish is Avani, an arabic name which means "earth" apparently.
My paragon is Ililya Sharah, I made Sharah from Sahara. Originally it was going to be Saharah, but then I decided to cut the first "a".
My other mesmer is Allura Damoiselle. Allura came from "allure", and "damoiselle" is an archaic form for "maiden" or "lady"
My ritualist Rhan, came from Rani - an Indian (ie sub-continent) name. After the Factions preview the "Hindi" look of the ritualist really stuck with me.
My PvP and storage characters though take other names. I've one called Random Hugs, another Lady Lozza. But never || or XX. Cute and clever is what I aim for.

Mac Sidewinder
There's alot of inspiring name generating going on here. And I thought most people simply picked up the book titled "Vulgar, insensitive, sexual, and immoral words of the 21st century" to make a name up.
Good going guys and keep it up!

Glib
Can words be immoral?
On topic: I generally pick names based on old Norse mythology, Gaelic folk heroes, Latin or German versions of common names or phrases. Most of the time I try and pick a meaning that suits the character and go from there. Being largely from an Irish and German background with a heafty dose of Native American heritage throw is....I have tons of personal history and ancestry to draw from.
Ravens have long been a personal totem and clan within my tribe as well as the root (in old Irish) of my last name...and I have a few that hang around my property. Variations of Raven often find their way into my names. I usually use them on Rangers. Elementalists usually get latin names and Warriors, usually female, get good, stout German names like Ursula.
Look through baby name sites if you want a good variey. I tend to go for Irish baby names as a start. Personal heritage and ancestrry is a good place to start if you like having some connection to your character.

Lots of links. Nice easy to use search functions. Doesn't do the normal baby name site thing. Promotes heritage and ancestry searches. Lots of countries, cultures, myths, legends, and history.

Hyper Cutter
I started out using the scientific names of animals as character names. for Factions characters I mostly had a "Japanese name + color + other word" system (with the exception of the Aozora sisters). For Elonians I used
Seventh Sanctum's name generators to make Middle Eastern-sounding names.
My characters:
R/ Blue Shot Kurenai
W/ Fang of Pyre
N/ Green Reaper Hinata (named after the Naruto character, and using the white-eyed face for good measure)
D/ Irugu Falcaris (The second part means "scythe", though I may have misspelled it)
The Aozora sisters Kaoru, Midori, and Sakura (E, Mo, and Rt respectively), along with Torako (an assassin who "died" at Dzagonur Bastion, ie got stuck there and I deleted her)
P/ Rujoc Idira
Me/ Shiho Phantomwing ("phantomwing" sounded mesmer-y...)
A/ Talon of Aureus
Deleted characters:
W/ Megalania Prisca (giant monitor lizard, appropriate for a profession that kills things with a sword)
E/ Titanis Walleri (named because of how tall eles are at max height, reminded me of phorusrhacids)
N/ Latimeria Chalumnae (What better name for a necro than that of the fish that returned from extinction?)
W/ Silver Fang Kagura
A/ Red Dagger Keiko
D/ Akesiel Silverfang (also "died" at Dzagonur)
R/ Irugu the Bold

Courage!
named all my chars after courage the cowardly dog
cataphract
My Tyrian characters have Greek names and use last names depending on what I was reading/watching/playing at the time.
Helene Flashfinger (ele) - last name by Diablo2 boss Geleb Flamefinger;
Andromede Amidala(ranger), Antigone Amidala(monk) - too much Star Wars in that period of time;
Persephone Atreides (mesmer) - was reading Dune;
Athene Ashurtashpi (warrior) - Daedra shrine of Ashurnabitashpi from Morrowind was a wee bit too long;
Terpsychore Naiomeia (necro) - don't remember what inspired me for this one.
I named my ritualist Ariadne only to commemorate my first character which I ended up deleting. In keeping with the egyptian theme of Nightfall, my dervish is named Ankhnesmerire III. First two were survivor chars that got killed early on and deleted. I gave my assasin a japanese name, Kimiko Amatsukaze. Googled for japanese names, liked this one and used a name of a japanese navy destroyer as her last name. My presearing ranger, Tananda Barradin got her name after Robert Asprin's Myth series Tananda and the last name of that duke fellow.

Artisan Archer
My last character is called Li Tie Kuai.
It's one of the eight drunken immortals, from which (supposedly) Drunken Boxing has been derived.
I was making a survivor character so I thought: boxing, immortal.
And I then I came up with this.
(It's a paragon btw)

EPO Bot
"Midnight miss Suki" was already taken for my mezmer, so i took "I love my dollies" instead.
Sora267
My earlier characters were random names based on the profession I made (Ex: Blooded Cure for my N/Mo and Abyssal Bladesman for my Warrior). I then started naming PvE characters RPG-ish names using alliteration (Ex: Annie Arrows and Minerva Malaquine) and my PvP characters something punny.
ShadowsRequiem
Usually just do Kate __________ And I pick some kind of word that relates to the class.
Though I really wish I could rename my pve sin and rit X_X
PVP chars I make them have the emoest hair style I can find for my name An Emo Haircut

DeBron
All of my characters are assassins.
I name them all Naruto with varying numbers of X's. Sometimes I'll throw in a misspelled "assassin" to confuse people.
EX: Xx Naruto Asasain Xx

kostolomac
Kosta _____ , ended up with Kostolomac (Bonebreaker) on my mes , but thats the name i always use
Ate of DK
My characters' names are found in Greek mythology.
Ate and Daphne.
Ate and Daphne.
SimonSez
I name my pvp chars after song names. Mostly Hardstyle and Trance songs. My other PvE chars are all made up, but not the Rit, wich has a latin name.
Unreal Havoc
I generally try and think of an exotic forename and a surname that fits the proffession for PvE characters, ie: Selket Shadowdancer (Assassin), Tala Truestrike (Ranger), Leilani Lifeshield (Monk), Enyo Warblade (Warrior), Fyuree Firestorm (Elementalist), etc.
JONO51
I've using random name gens for a long time now because usualy i suck at making half decent names xD
Turtle222
Names i make up are too beautiful to be posted here
nyankee24
My character''s names are "Yankee" followed by which ever profession it is. For example, Yankee Warrior. Its kind of corny and boring but names don't really bother me.
Konig Des Todes
My character names usually come from Fallen Angel names, such as Azazel the Accursed(My main, sin), Xaphan Sariel (My rit, 2 different names), and Zasalamel Rofocale (my dervish, Zasalamel is from SC3, Rofocale is the fallen angel name).
Or I find some old gaming name I used, such as Cypher of the Light (my paragon), or I use a phrase in german, Konig Des Todes (mispelt "King of Death", should be Koenig but that was taken). I hardly stray from those 3 naming processes.

Cale Roughstar
My system was as fallows.
PvP
Cale ______ (Would put in relevant or slightly silly name.)
e.g. Cale Goes Monkstar
Cale is Dominating (Mes)
Cale Burnstar (Ele)
Cale Ownstar/Pwnstar (for jokes)
Cale Healstar (N/Rt)
PvE would go with
_______ Roughstar (I would usually try to make the first name relevant)
Kaisagi Roughstar (Canthan sin, going for asian name)
Roderick Roughstar
Daemon Roughstar - Necro
Terel Roughstar - Monk (Not sure where that one came from, but it is one of my favourites)
The two exceptions are:
Zhuo Yu - My main, I started off naming my characters after Dynasty Warriors/Romance of the Three Kingdoms characters.
Dagny Tagartt - Mes. I wanted to name my new Mesmer after a character from Atlas Shrugged (Ayn Rand), and since John Galt was taken, I went for the slightly misspelled version of Dagny.
Cale Roughstar is a Factions ranger that I play every now and then, but the name stuck when I joined a guild the day factions came out. Hence the names.
