guildwarsguru.com popups
Kyomi Tachibana
I might add it doesn't happen often, maybe 3 times the ebay thing has happened to me in the past two days.
Inde
Yeah Kyomi, I figured it has to be a really infrequent one which is why I'm testing as much as I can in the meantime.

Slightly related, but I've noticed that when people link things here in the forums it can cause you to appear logged out due to the type of link which can result in several pop-ups.
Example: I use www.guildwarsguru.com since that's how I found the forum.
Someone links to another post that is simply guildwarsguru.com without the www subdomain. This then causes the user to appear logged out and is actually rather annoying because of the ads that will appear.
Inde, would it be possible to convert this website to a Class B?
Class B means that all of the traffic to http://www.example.com is politely and silently redirected to http://example.com. This is currently the preferred no-www classification as it does not inconvenience your users, but it does assert the deprecated nature of the www subdomain.
The process of making your domain a Class B is quite simple. All you need to do is create or modify a file called .htaccess located in the root directory of your site and add the following lines.

I'll forward that on Tarun thank you. And Katsumi did get me the link for the ebay ad so I'll forward that as well.
Inde
And... how funny. I just got it as well. It's a complete redirect, legit ebay page though so that was my first worry. A phishing site. Can't believe an ad is doing a complete redirect though. I thought for sure it was an interstitial.
Necro Quink
just disable the goddamn things, they annoy me so hard
Inde
Um yes, that would be the point of me posting that I am forwarding it on to get it removed.

Great! It's not just me! I was about to start a thread Sunday about this, but figured maybe I had clicked something by accident or was just losing my mind. So, +1 to the random ebay page.
Richardt
For a while I thought it was some Malware that found it's way onto my desktop but after running every program I could think of it came up clean-but since it was a normal EBay page-the first one was an antique train set and the other one was something equally harmless it had to be an issue with Guru.
Not really harmful, but kinda annoying.

Popup ads are bad, mmmkay?
Malice Black
Popup ads keep this site running, mmmkay?
Kattar
Wow, got another redirect today, to some advertising site.
Wierd.

Thanks Katsumi for the report. We'll get it removed.
Cass
Ok, so negative comments about those popups are simply deleted? You're not interested in what visitors of this site think about this topic?
lietzaum
i must not be logging in enough or i use the same computer enough i only had it a few times but i feel your pain POP ups are annoying
Inde
Nope Cass, I welcome all comments. But those that involve general comments on how someone thinks internet advertising works or the benefits that someone thinks we may or may not receive don't really contribute. If you've read through the thread there are clearly other comments that are negative we have not deleted. Suffice it to say that the ads are needed. I'll repeat again, we don't have a big backer like IGN, or IncGamers or other such fansites that have corporations behind them to pay our bills. We could certainly force more intrusive advertisements on you like some sites have. Or just keep pop-ups on for all users regardless. But we have tried to find a happy medium and it's working.
They are annoying but I can tell you I've tested it extensively. It's 2 pop-ups while logging in. That's it. Once you are logged in, no pop-ups. Besides the rogue ad that we try to take care of right away.

Thanks nitetime.
Tarun
Any word on adding the no-www?
Inde
I had forgotten actually. Thanks for the reminder Tarun!

I'm logged in, and reading this thread:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...84#post3844484
There is a link to another Guru thread in the first post. I'm thinking "no problem .... I'm just going to another place in Guru". Yes, I got there, and got TWO pop-ups! Why is it neccessary to get pop-ups when clicking on inter-site links?

Because there was no www in front of it. You were logged out. Read Tarun's post on the page before.
quickmonty
That explains it. I didin't get the significance of Tarun's post when I first read it, but now it makes sense.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Not 10 minutes ago I clicked on the arrow button to take me to the last post of the Off-Topic thread from the Forum Index and I got redirected eZanga then a hotel called the Jefferson. I have never had that happen before but I figured once is enough to report it.
Darkobra
I was logged in and noticed I got this pop-up not long ago. I was logged in for quite a while and the pop-up was recent.

I was registering with the site and got a pop up midway through filling in my info. That was a bad first impression with GuildWarsGuru, but I haven't gotten any pop ups since logging in.
Tarun
Please keep us updated on the implementation of the no-www Inde.
And welcome to the forums, Obsidiatrix.

Guru needs 3 popups per page + however many embeded ads when i'm not logged in and have adblock turned off? That seems a bit overkill. Especially the sheer number of popups alone.
Inde
Please... don't exaggerate. I've tested it extensively on multiple browsers. There are 1-2 pop-ups when logging in or when first entering the site when logged out, usually 2. Then you can get from 1-2 pop ups on your next 1-3 clicks. After that the pop-ups are few and far between.
We have an ad in the top post, top banner and inline text for the forums when logged out.
Log in (yes I know... logging in with the pop ups is annoying) and you get only a top banner for the forums.

all right, fair enough blackhearted. let me do some new tests and look into it. also, going to move these posts to our "pop up" thread we have in our site feedback forum.
Age
I get it to atleast prevent them from popping up as I have seen lots from Lavasoft adware remove.Look at my Start bar.
Here is another pic.

I honestly have no idea what you are trying to show me here Age. You have 2 pop-ups. As I mentioned above you get if you are not logged in.
Kali Ma
Today's popups upon visiting the site when not logged in are asking for personal data and requiring a force quit of the browser to close them without some form of data entry or form acceptance, which is often a technique used by scripts, trojans and phishing sites.
Inde
can you get me a screenshot or url please Kali Ma?
Snograt
Sorry to res the thread (heh, I made it pop up) - but there's one thing that does bother me.
I get zero popups/popunders because I'm a subscriber and I auto login.
However, if I click on a link to a separate post, the window that opens is in the not logged in state, so popups galore.
I have a nasty suspicion that this is unavoidable?
[EDIT] Oh bugger - that's what I get new posting to a followed link. I totally missed Tarun's no-www post and the responses thereto. Sorry

Snograt,
Now you too see why I have asked about getting that implemented.

I still get fresh pop ups fairly regularly when I am logged in, just by clicking on threads. They are blocked by google toolbar, but the icon comes up near the cursor and on the toolbar, and when i turn the blocker off they appear.
