eye of the north = discouraging?
elsquid
This is something I been noticing recently for me. I've just gotten back into guildwars after a stopping for a while. I picked up eye of the north and I've been playing through it with my main character (a ranger who's gone through all 3 campaigns).
Now, I used to rotate back and forth between a few characters I have, just to mix things up. But now, with the hall of monuments, I suddenly feel like I shouldn't be playing as the rest of them, Like i should be sticking with my 1 character and getting all the awards for the sake of Guild Wars 2.
Is that just crazy? should I snap out of it and just play my other characters, or am i right, that theirs little motivation to play more the one?

its more than discouraging....
phoo slaya
that was an issue i thought of. the solution i decided on was to still play eotn with more than just my main character BUT im only going to pursue hom stuff on my main character.

It's not the HoM that is discouraging, its their silence.
WHY DONT THEY JUST TELL US? Whether or not filling just one HoM reaps the most profit, we have no clue.
EDIT: On that note. Seeing the poster above me. (He sold me my last 4 shards)
I'm getting Obsidian armor for a character that isnt my main. (First and last FoW for me)
I've also been getting EotN armors for my other chars so. EotN isnt discouraging me.

I had the same problem when titles are introduced. Spent almost all my time getting titles with my warrior and warrior only.
I quit after a while as a result, came back 3 months later, and didn't bothered about titles or HoM.

GW is billed as a game for casual players. Most casual players, I imagine, have one "main" character that they do everything with. The HoM is therefore well suited for such players. Furthermore, by the available reports, GW2 will be character-centric rather than account-centric, so it will be natural to use the achievements of one main character in GW1 for the character in GW2. You can see it as discouraging completionists, but I see it as encouraging players to get some perspective and a life outside GW. One GWAMMo per player is more than enough.

I used to play every new chapter with all my characters. But I went through EOtN with my main only (ranger) and now I'm going for titles.
But it's not discouraging for me. I'm simply having more fun with my main at this moment. Probably in the near future I'm gonna complete EOtN with more toons, but I'm not going for titles on them, for sure.

Maybe they haven't decided?
Maybe they don't have every last little detail of Guild Wars 2 planned?
Maybe because the games not finished, things might change!

mhm yea since eotn i only play on 1 of my char :/

considering how much they hyped HoM, and what a counter-productive thing it is (in terms of getting players excited and involved), they probably wish they never put it in...........which might explain the silence
it was horribly conceived, and equally horribly implemented. For me it's just a place where the main storyline gets advanced, no better than an npc with a ! over their head.

I hope you did not buy the game because of the HoM. That would be a mistake. It's fun to play your main chr like you did, and divide the goodies you find amongst the other chr's. Than try out variatons of hero builds on your other chr's, with completely differend teams to support them. Go to your favorite spots in other campaigns and play them again with EotN stuff. But don NOT spend all your time and energy for status on the HoM, that would be a timeconsuming business without much ingame fun.

Ye, I completed 3 campaigns and GWEN with my assa, then I wanted to create pve Ranger. But I didn't. When I thought about shitty NF and GWEN with their grindy titles stupidity I decides to stick to my assa.

Like has been said befoe, expect a "I've Filled my HoM in Gw and all i got was this lousy t-shirt" for all your efforts, i'm guessing it will be something in the lines of the pre-sale bonus itens/ BMP itens.
Im particulary Ignoring my HoM w/ all but one chars just in case GW2 doesnt turn out to disapoint me as much as i expect it to.

The biggest dissapointment of EotN for me are the rewards dungeons and "elite" areas give.
The whole concept of introducing dungeons into the game failed because one area like DoA outmatched all of them together reward wise, it's just not worth doing them.
But yes, there is a lot of grind involved in maxing most of the titles... The time invested in it doesn't make the end reward of maxing them worth it at all, hence the discouragement.

I've never really cared about my HoM to be honest.
I have one mini pet in it, 4 heroes, and yeah...that's it I think. shrug
No desire really, at all, to fill it. When I figured out it had severe limits to what could be added I pretty much decided then that I won't be dedicating any time in building it up.
I just want a great game in GW2. The same way I think of GW1 being a great game. All the little bells and whistles linked to HoM won't matter at all if GW2 turns out to be a total flop (Which, I want to say, I don't think it will flop at all). At the same time, not having those bells and whistles won't detract me from immersing myself into that new world.
I will let my characters here fade away like they have in every other game I've left behind. The same will have to be said for GW1.

Im only getting titles for HoM on my main, wanna have leather books, or maybe rich mahogony by the time GW2 comes out.
Again, its optional, if you dont wanna have a leg up in GW2, dont bother grinding titles, there will defo be some advantage even if its not named yet.

I think the HoM is generally disappointing. You can't show it off to your friends, and you can only put Destroyers weapons on display.

Its the realisation that Guild Wars has now become Grind Wars.

Only destroyer weapons was a let down.

discouraging, yes, I would agree....back in prophecies days all you needed for new armor was to get to the city!
disappointing, most definitely!! Eye has been the most hyped thing and for nothing.....I have lots of characters I like to play (16) and most of them have worked thru chapters 1, 2 and are still finishing 3---however, the ones that dont want armor WONT be finishing eye---its NOT worth it, and even the armor really isnt worth it either.....so very disappointing. (some of my characters see no reason to even venture there--except to get the new skills).
HoM ---dont really care about it, gw2 there is only a tiny, slim chance that I will buy it (and the magic eight ball right now is betting against it).
so OP, totally agree.

Reputation title tracks are what GW:EN introduced as "end-game" content.
I'm not sure if I'd play GW:EN even if I got it for free.

It's not crazy.
Too many people feel the same.
I used to play with all my 10 characters, 1 of each profession.
Now:
- I cannot open chests with any other character than my main, or treasure hunter is 'spread'.
- I cannot ID golds with any other character than my main, or wisdom is 'spread'.
- If I get a miniature, only my main will dedicate it, or it would get spread.
- I cannot party, drink or eat with any other character than my main character.
And overall I feel like wasting time while I'm playing for getting anything else but account-wide titles with other character than my main one.
Where's the problem?
- Grind titles. All titles that are increased by accumulating points instead of making single and separate achievements. Just like PvP titles, they should be account wide. For plot-related grind titles (reputation and promotion) they should at least require less points to max the more characters have maxed them.
- The Devotion monument should be account based. No one gets miniatures for a character, it's not like armors or heroes or anything else. Everyone gets miniatures for the account.
PvE should have been like PvP, getting things unlocked and done account wide.
1 account -> 1 player. Accounts cannot be shared, so there's no reason to keep character achievements separated.
Yeah, it¡'s not the same to play as a monk than as an assassin, but in PvP you'll get the points account wide regardless of profession.
I'm not purchasing more slots to use them as mules. I want to play with all of them, but If I do so, I'll get left out compared to those that stick to a single slot.

GWEN was pretty much the strongest proof to date that the game has turned into a grind fest.
I know of a lot of people who have been very dedicated to GW since its release, who simply quit the game all together less than one month after the release of GWEN.
GWEN = huge dissappointment

The rewards? Its not recommended, at least not by me, to play specifically for the rewards, given that we dont know what they are and the fact that they are all but surely to be cosmetic.

I'm kind of surprised how many people actually give a shit about HoM.
"Oh no, I can't play anything besides my main, I need to get Big Deal title track"
- For what exactly? Those things are common as dirt and don't impress anyone anymore. Why are you limiting your enjoyment of the game because of some stupid title? Poor repetition value is a valid argument for not starting new character, titles are not.
And 10 bucks says HoM benefits will be something like bonus skin weapons or glowy hands. If you're even buying GW2...

one unlocked item per HOM item so people who could afford full monuments would have no advantage period.........destroyer weps only a clue?
no wealth transfer in any form including unique HOM minis which would be a fortune IF you were able to sell them which you cant.

these unique items/minis/etc will ONLY BE AVAILABLE FROM THE HOM
you cant buy/sell/trade them to get ahead.
very good business not to create an instant elite class to kick off the game.
as stated every player will start equal and what you get will be cosmetic and have no effect on gameplay.

Well thanks to the people who whined about putting countless hours into GW and not having anything to show for it in GW2 we got HOM. People just need to realize that games are games and eventually all characters along with their achievements go to character heaven.

HoM aside, EotN added:
Rep point grind
Vanquish grind
HM dungeon grind
Core Grind
Char carving grind
Glacial grind
Chalices grind
Bison grind
Rin Relic grind
Polymock (lag) grind
Thats a heck of a lot of grind for an expansion, and not releated to HoM. Sure they are all optional, though some of them give in-game advantages, so they are about as optional as any character pregression activity. But this is what EotN is about, the storyline/quests are short and quick to complete, so what is left is the grind.
Stating that grind is due to being a bad player is either odd or a silly veiled insult to someone you disagree with.
