2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? Yes
3.why or why not? I don't see a reason why not. (mini monkieeeee)
4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? Duh, of course.
5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? No
6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? I get 10-15 ecto each week for playing a lonely girl (not really)
7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? No
8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? Most likely not. If I only had one toon, it would be male.

1. Male.
2. Originally all male, then a mix of the 2, now all female (except my never used PvP toon).
3. They're hotter. Also, I usually only find one male combination I deem acceptable (if that), and since I've already played them, I want something different.
4. Every female I see.
5. No.
6. You mean play dress-up?
7. I don't care who other players are.
8. The only example I can think of would be be Alex Munro in Elite Force. In the first game you could choose to be Alex (Alexandria) or Alex (Alexander) Munro. It really annoyed me when they dropped the female version in EF2, because the male version looked such a doofus.
Generally, though, I accept whatever character the game casts me as (with much cringing, though, in some cases). The only one that really stands out as making me feel like I was that character was Gordon Freeman in the original Half-Life. The lack of dialogue was outstanding - it's much easier to settle into a role, when you don't have to hear yourself realing off cheesy lines, but you are still being addressed and acknowledged by other characters.
I kinda went off at a tangent there, but I guess my point is that no game has made me feel like I *am* the character, except Half-Life. Usually I view myself as an observer who gets to pull the strings - and from that perspective, the only way it matters what gender the central character is, is in terms of how appealing I'm likely to find watching them and hearing them speak for hours, to weeks on end.

No. Why would I?

So no - I don't play with female chars much - just because I don't like their character animations. They run funny. Must be the lack of balls.

I would also strive to go male if the difference wouldn't be as great - for example I played Chris in RE:make. Also if I had played something like Mass Effect - I'd go male. (Screw the lesbian alien sex scene! )
On the other hand - Talim was my main SC2 character. Here is an example where the whole gaming experience changes when playing a female. IF I could get the same gaming experience as playing with Talim on a male character - I would play with him though.

1.what is your gender?
Male.
2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?
Yes.
3.why or why not?
Because it is possible to create either a male or female character.
4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own?
Sure.
5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?
No.
6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?
Huh? This isn't The Sims.
7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently?
No....
8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?
Yes, female characters in a game with Elves.
To add, I've got 10 PvE characters. Five of them are male, five of them are female. My main is a female ranger. I don't care much about the gender of the character I play. Unless the difference is truly distinct.
When I'd play an Orc, Charr or whatever brawny class, I'd pick a male.
When I'd play an Elf, Sylvari or whatever nimble class, I'd pick a female.

3. I'd probably feel quite odd in some way.
4. Naturally. What MMO *doesn't* have these people?
5. Nope, though I do tend to assume that they *are* the same gender as their avatar.
6. AFAIK, male characters rarely get special benefits in any game ;P
7. I'd probably poke a bit of fun, but I wouldn't actually start getting serious about it.
8. Er, probably not. If I did decide to start playing a female character on any game, it'd probably come down to some fairly specific stuff.

1.what is your gender? Female
2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex? and 3. why or why not? In games where playing a different gender makes a difference in dialog options, yes. In GW, no--it doesn't affect the story. I do agree with upier that the female mesmer armor looks much better than the male
4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own? Well, I _know_ a lot of people play the opposite gender, but it never really made a difference to me.
5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender? No, it's just a picture. It's what comes out of the players' mouths and how they act that count.
6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender? It's just a bunch of pixels, for heaven's sake!
7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently? No--it's not the gender of the person or the avatar that counts.
8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why? Sometimes I don't have a choice--in games like Fable, Planescape: Torment or The Witcher, the only PC is male. It really is hilarious in Fable when I go up to a female (or male), flex and pump my well-muscled manly-man arm, and say in that Fable-sexy voice, "Heeeyyyy!" and they all fall in love with me....
In games where I do have a choice and gender does make a difference in the storyline, such as KotOR or Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, I'll play characters of both genders to see what happens in the story. In games where gender doesn't make any difference at all, I usually play female since it's easier for me to role-play females, but otherwise it's not a big deal.

Interesting study and one which always fascinates me. Here's my input:
1. Male
2. Yes
3. I tend to play the characters I find most aesthetically pleasing. I like to disillusion those who view females as chauvinistically weak too.
4. I never assume someone's real gender based on a female avatar but I do assume male avatars are played by males. I know this isn't always true but as a generalisation that's how I see things.
5. I tend to be more at ease round female avatars which probably reflects how I am in real life.
6. Never
7. No
8. My choice tends to be dependant on the options the game provides. I usually find the choices of female avatars are not up to the same standard as the male avatars. As an example I played male chars in UO, DAoC and Shadowbane all for this reason. Guild Wars is very much the exception in my eyes and as a result all my chars are female.

1 – Male
2 – Not in Guild Wars, no. In another game which did not give the choice of gender in order to play a specific class of character I did.
3 – All my characters in GW are male. I just prefer to use all male characters.
I guess I might be old school but even after years of playing online games when I first meet a female avatar in-game my first assumption is that the person playing that character is female as well. So, for my choice as a male, I prefer to play males.
In some games you might not get the choice of gender if you want to play a certain class of character. In Diablo for example, if you want to use a bow you choose to be an Amazon, you are a female, no choice.
4 – There is no suspicion involved. I know for a fact that many people play the opposite gender. I know both males and females who play all characters of the opposite gender and quite a few males and females who have a mixture of gender characters.
5 – Hehe, This is a good question.
I have to say yes, when I first meet a female character I may be a bit more polite going under the assumption that it may be a female playing the character. With the wide use of in-game chat software I know without a doubt that many females play GW.
6 – No
7 – No
8 – No. However, since I prefer to play a Ranger ( or whatever the character with the bow might be called in the game ) If a particular game only had a female character as a choice to use a bow I would be inclined to use that gender.

BUT running normally looks pretty decent.
Much better then the female impersonation of Lisa Marie in Mars Attacks!
I hate the arm movement. It's ghastly!

2. yes i have
3. I made a male monk on my 2nd account cause there was an armor set that i think looks better on male monks. LOL
4. yes, majority of males play female characters
5. not at all
6. err no
7. nope
8. it would depend on what the characters looked like. Being a female i gotta have characters that look good.

1. Female.
2. Yep~
3. Whilst I have to say that I first started with all female characters, I eventually deleted a few in favour of male characters. Female face options/armour seem to have more effort put into them, which was the main attraction for me, but I managed to find some mixes I liked amongst male characters.
4. Well, I don't go around suspecting people as most often, they probably are.
5. No, unless I've ascertained their real gender.
6. I'll admit! Yes, when I first started playing. Hey, it's not like I was lying.
7. Only if they're a close friend in team chat, with a PUG. Random people don't have to know their real gender.
8. I'm all for it. I tend to, anyway. My main characters in Oblivion over the past couple of years (plural due to reinstalls, which really shouldn't surprise the Oblivion player base) have all been male, as opposed to how I started with Guild Wars. Then again, the customisation's a lot more refined, as is the modding... Maybe that's the reason.

I usually play female characters as it seems more artistic and they seem to have more of a powerful presence. Most male appearances are geared towards some Fabio or DnD muscular player's handbook meatcube appearance, which just kind of makes me feel like I'm losing braincells playing one. Female characters just seem more artistic and intellectual (which is why I main on a female mesmer).
IRL I am a male that plays a female character, because with the dedication it takes to max titles, get over 11 elite armor sets, etc. I think that there is maybe just a little importance in liking your avatar.
As far as other people, I don't treat any people differently based on gender choice. I don't get Guildwars confused with myspace.
I have however, have had in game advances made on my character by other players based on her gender, which I find somewhat disturbing but at the same time funny in a sad way. I'll take it as a compliment for having good tastes.

1. Male
2. Yes
3. Either because I disliked the male model's appearance/armor for that class, or to suit the name I chose. I chose female gender characters for female names.
4. I assume all players are male until I have reason to believe otherwise. Suspicion isn't really a factor.
5. No.

What is your gender?
Female
Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?
Not on GW, no :B
Why or why not?
Iunno~ I suppose I just like the appearance of the female characters more.
Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own?
No, I never suspect it. But I do know that people tend to play the opposite of their own gender.
Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?
Nope, I treat everyone the same :>
Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?
Haha, no xD;
If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently?
Not at all :>
Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?
Sure, I'm all for playing as male characters. It brings a little...variety into things. I can't list anything off the top of my head xD;; I'll probably make a male GW character eventually, but not just now.
