Who here WANTS GW2 to have a level cap...
HawkofStorms
Yes a level cap please. Level cap allows for people to experiement with different character classes. If there is an unlimitied cap, no matter how much you play, if you play multiple characters you will never catch a guy who dedicates the same amount of time to one character.
HuntMaster Avatar
Level cap should end at level 100, Lower the XP requirements so it doesnt taken forever to get there, but make it take enough time that within a few months time you are not maxed level.
Level 20 cap blows, level 45 isnt much better, no offense but I want more meat with my patatoes in GW2, the higher the level, the more power, the stronger the monsters.
GW2 should be better than gw1, or what point is there in buying it? After getting to level 20 in gw1 you are as powerful as you can get, and everything sort of levels out and gets boring. Taking an idea from diablo, more levels means stronger foes, requiring better items and abilities. instead of filling the game with cloned items with the same boring stats, fill the game with hundreds of different items with dozens and dozens of special abilities. In gw, its all about the story, if the story isnt satisfying then you wont like the game because nothing changes past level 20, if you level to 20 in 1 day, then you have the rest of the game to be bored with.
I vote for level 100 cap. people bitch about spending time in the game, but whats the point in a game where you can accomplish everything within a few months. Other games require some dedication of time in order to achieve the higher tiers of power, like wow, eq, diablo. even RTS games require more time. GW does not, you can max level in a few hours, buy tomes to get skills and walk through the game half asleep.
Beyond level 100 would be a waste. it would mean each level would only gain little power making more levels pointless. Level 20 characters should get killed hard in level 30 areas, and level 50 chars should get destroyed in level 100 areas. More content means a better experience. Players are going to play the game for years anyways, so why not give them years worth of content to work towards, instead of crap titles that make grinding boring, find a way to make grinding so enjoyable, no one notices they are grinding in the first place.
For the diablo players, or players of other MMO's you know the feeling of getting that special item that makes you stronger against the monsters you face, the feeling of "I'm glad I stuck with it"
I also hope that GW2 has non custom armor that we can buy and find as loot drops, higher dmg weapons and skills and generally a more MMO feel rather than a stunted attempt at an MMO. Add in more items like rings, amulets, and more than just 5 pieces of armor. more designs.
I think areas should be created with certain levels in mind. level 1-10 areas, level 11-20, level 21-30, level 31-40, level 41-50, all the way up to 100. the beginning areas would be like playing in easy mode, the medium levels would be like normal mode and the final areas would be like hardmode.
Then add in elite areas that require no special tasks or party requirements to join, simply being level 100. and all the monsters will be stronger, the bosses will be on the epic scale. The lower level ranged elite areas would require only that you meet the max level range for that area, in other words, level 1-10 would require level 10 and so on.
I also think each area should have an "elite" section, exsample of this" level 1-10 area has an elite area where you must be level 10 to enter. each area would have its own elite section, and yes even when you are in a higher tier than the elite requires you could still go back and play it again. Say I am level 50, I can still go back to the level 10 elite area and smash the weak monsters if that is what i want to do. The elite sections will offer better loot than the normal sections, stronger monsters and different tactics.
The level 100 elite sections could be the realm of the gods, delivering insanely hard content with insanely powerful rewards to make the work involved with getting to level 100 well worth it. People want everything without doing the work, That needs to change, But also we need better rewards than that of gw1.
Guildwars has the potential to be one of the best games ever, but either due to lazy players or lazy devs it has not even gotten close. GW has some very cool aspects, but falls short, GW2 should take those cool aspects and throw everything else away.
PvP can be broken into sections also, beginner pvp, normal pvp, advanced pvp, hardcore pvp and elite pvp. all balanced within its level ranges.
The real problem is can anet offer such a big game or is it beyond their talents. We know they could do it an not charge monthly fees, but are they capable. I doubt it. I wish I had more faith in anets abilities, But I'v played Gw1 too long to live in a dream world. Anet should do what they have to in order to ensure gw2s life span, because soon another free to play game will come out and steal all but the most hardcore fans.

this is quite pointless really...
if there was no lvl cap...
pvp-only charas would be impossible to have
and if gw gets rid of pvp-only charas,
then gw loses at least, if not more than half of its customer base...

Just a note, but half the people I have talked to left GW for WoW due to the cap. I am talking hundreds of players adding to the WoW population that I have spoken to, and God only knows how many others there are. Every other game in existence either has a high level that takes more than a day to reach, or allows for a higher level in the expansions. GW is the one game that stands out in this aspect and is one of the few areas of the game that I do not like.
I personally dislike the level cap in GW because after 20 there is no game. I have a 20 monk, 55 smiter and can solo almost everywhere including Mineral Springs and UW, and that's all there is to do, farm items and gold. I do the same with my warrior and am almost invincible. I guess the point is, levelling is FUN. More points to spend is FUN. Playing for months (average play time being two hours a day) to reach a high level is FUN.
The main reason I left GW for WoW a few years ago (I play GW again now) was that I could play and there was SO MUCH content to enjoy even after 60! First you spend months getting to 60, then months after that doing the raid areas! To top that, the expansion allowed you to go to 70, which was VERY slow-going for a normal player, but FUN. Levelling and having more choices is fun. GW has VERY few choices on attribute points and such, and you can hit 20 in about eight hours if you stick to it, not fun.
As for people who can't hit twenty in a week (seven days), they must not know how to play, and complaining about players who may have been there for years and attained a high level is stupid. Capping levels so that somebody who plays five minutes a day can actually see the end of a game is just dumb. I believe in a cap, but somewhere between fifty and ninety-nine would be good. Give us something that the casual player will enjoy for six months to a year. Casual players can afford at least two hours in the evening or split up throughout the day. Anything less is NOT casual and should not be used to judge play-style.

This thread reminds me of back in the day of just prophecies in the first few months, having a level 20 made you hella 1337 xD. I want a level cap but I want it to be around 200, I personally agree that a person who invests 4-5 hours should be better than a 1-2 hour person, they have invested more and therefor deserve more.
what i really want to see is weapons and armor that aren't all the same level of damage and +armor class. I want to see armor that you have to quest for or something were the armor is rare, unique, and better than anything you can buy.

i support a level cap. whether its 20 or 100 or whatever it should make the game more skill oriented rather than time spent oriented. If the levels are higher then it should be easier to level up.

This thread is 100% pure pointlessness. Nobody knows how leveling will be implemented in GW2, so nobody can honestly state their position on it. It's pure speculation.
Also, we already have half a dozen threads like this.
Moderators, please close this thread on grounds of speculation and redundance...

Worst case scenario, and I will not play GW2: no level cap, you can only pwn if you invest 5000 hours, and then you will still get pwned unless youre helped by that guy who hasnt gotten off GW2 (PvE) since release...

We don't need all this high end math... jeez
Just make it like a quarter circle (quadrant 2...), and then a straight line at y=N (a circle of radius N, N is where atts stop getting bigger (N is a constant))

I dont' care about the cap, as long as I don't have to kill more than 1000 monsters at any given time to level up I'll be fine with it. What I do want is an entirely different Guild Wars, I want nearly everything changed besides a couple of the gameplay features of 1 and the story/lore. Anything else will be sub-par and boring because that is what Guild Wars is now.
Leveling=content Anet, play it smart. Do not make the same mistake you made with Guild Wars.
As for your 2nd worry OP, that's not a problem. There will be a companion system in GW 2 that will bring anyone lower level trying to do a higher level mission, up to your level for that instance. That could also go for other instances (like dungeons) and maybe some areas, they didn't really explain it too much or I don't remember from what I read. But I do know, you will not have to worry that much.

If no level cap means not having any levels at all, then sure I would be all for it. And if Anet could pull it off while making the game fun, it would be very innovative.

Level 40 Cap on those who haven't completed everything possible.
Those who have can go up to 60.
Strange thought, but hey, I can throw out many ideas and still they'd look impossible to be true.

Well I suppose Guild Wars has a decent amount of after 20 play. Dungeons and quests you can do and what not. I'd like more content though that was actually fun/not useless to do. (talking about the quests here).

I think there should be a Cap on Attributes or how powerful you can become certainly. Lets say level 80 is as powerful as you can be but you can reach level 81 and so on. So if you see a Level 300 and a Level 80 you will know they are at the same power level but level 300 would simply have more exp.

Eww...months to hit max level? nty. I don't want a really small level cap but I don't wan't to spend months on one character so he can hit max lv. I enjoy having multiple characters for different experiences and gameplay, a high level cap that takes months to hit would totally ruin this aspect of the game. And considering how gw groups like to leave certain professions out I like having multiple characters.

Level caps help to eliminate a lot of elitism that occurs in a lot of MMO's. With the 20lvl cap in GW now, i can level a character in a few hours and concentrate of having fun and strategy, as opposed to hundreds more hours of killing stuff. Keeping that in GW2 is important.

I want to keep a low, easily reachable level cap, but lets take this one step further:
No more Levels
Levels are just a way to say 'ok, here is an easy part of the game'. In other MMO's levels are designed to define your character's strength. But guild wars isn't supposed to be about your character's strength, its supposed to be about your skill and your build strength. So instead have the advancement be based around aquireing skills, as if the many skill quests in prophecies were the way to advance your character. Lets face it, there is no real reason for someone to magically have 3x as much health then another character. Start everyone off as the equivalent of GW1 level 20 characters, fighting the same level 20 characters in pre searing. As you advance through the game, an arbitrary 'level' of the enemy isn't increasing, instead they are given better builds and more creative groups.
Of course, this will never happen. 95% of the current guild wars population has given the stamp of approval to grind through their love of pve titles. Not to mention the whole idea of making smart enemies with good builds is infinitely harder then bumping up their level every area.

Im totally fine with the lvl 20 cap. But I do not want to see a new capped lvl that takes forever to get to. Was a smart move for GW to cap at 20 in the first place to have the game rely on the skills rather than the higher lvl.
I Dont Do Coke
I don't care about how high or low the level cap is, but the time it takes to reach it. No grindfest, please!
maraxusofk
w/e im not gonna play gw2 if there is a lvl cap and im not extremely enthusiastic for gw2 after seeing anet's "service" in gw1. if i dont play w/e. if i do ehhhh
good suggestion. if level is merely a title for epeen so be it. dont want grind = advantage

What if the new leveling system had its peak, at lets say 50, then every succeeding 10 levels corresponds to a title.
ex.
50- Max Char stats.
After 50, no benefits besides titles
60- maximus addictus
70- No Vivo
80- At homus no lifus
This would allow any level 50 to compete with the highest level (ex 300) on equal footing.

As probably mentioned somewhere in the thread, not having a level cap, even if it provides no advantage, is going to turn party formation in PvE into a HA /rank style affair.
How about we just have a level cap of 1?

I think the best way to instill a high level cap is to have a low stat cap. Even if, as some have suggested, the benefits of leveling became progressively smaller, people still will demand you to be max level. Take R10 Ursan, for instance, not a whole lot different between 8 and 10 (or 5 and 10 for that matter), yet people still demand "R10 Ursan" anyway. So low stat cap (40 or so is a good number), and you can keep going on to infinity for all I care.
Do you read these forums at all? Do you know how many Ursan haters are out there? Too many to count...

Yes, there needs to be SOME kind of cap...
I never even liked the increased levels to begin with. Making them grow exponentially larger with no break off point is rediculous

I like the level 20 cap in GW. I'm not too thrilled with raising it to infinity and beyond, but it sounds like they will implement diminishing returns for higher levels to the point where no benefit beyond a +1 level is gained. I'm OK with that.
Breakfast Mc Rit
Here's what I think Anet is expecting their cap (or lack thereof) to be like for their players:
1. You're level 80. Although you have little to no advantage over another player at level 20, others can see that you more than likely know what you're doing.
2. Whether or not you play x amount of hours, reaching high level is certainly an accomplishment and it's nice to have something to show for it. It's no different than having maxed out a title.
/not signed
Some people don't like the grind, but others really enjoy working to achieve a title. If this makes people happy, more power to them. I fail to see how this idea will take the skill out of the game. It's a number.
As for the people that want slow leveling to an insane number, that would deny casual gamers with little time to play the chance to experiment, and although some people stick to one character or have hours to play, others like the chance to try out different professions without punishment. I think Anet would lose the base of players that they are trying to appeal to.

In GW 1 all I have to show for how much exp I've gained is hundreds of skill points I'm not using. It'd be nice if you got up to like level 20~50, and then the stat/health gain per level were so negligible it may as well be zero.
