my rits are my favorites to play (have 2 one lady and one guy).....they do a ton of damage and can heal as well.
then I would have to go with my ele, mesmers, smiting monk, and maybe necro.

I have all the character classes, but for the most part I enjoy playing my ritualists the most.
my order would be:
1 rit
2 ele
3 mesmer
4 smiting monk (healing is just too boring)
5 necro (ss or mm, though I like ss better than just making minions)
6 ranger
7 paragon yawn
8 warrior (only like to play if I need to bash things)
9 dervish (spends tooo much time enchanting themselves)
10 assassin....(uhm yeah).

it took me a while to get the hang of the ritualists skills but when I did I was very impressed with them.

Even though I don't like playing a warrior that much, I have to say that to me, the easiest and most effective character is the Warrior, and that's the main reason why I chose her as my main.

It wasn't till I got my assassin several titles and then when I started working on the guardian titles that I realized how better it would be if I was playing a warrior instead. In some early Prophecies missions where there's a 4 person party limit, having an effective frontliner makes a lot of difference. Even though I liked my sin, I changed my main.

My first character was an Elementalist and I liked it while I didn't have other characters. After a while you'll realize that (in high end PvE, HM) Elementalist is actually a very weak class, if not for utility (snaring, blindness wards and such). They're not good for dealing damage once you realize how damage/armor works.

I didn't like playing the necro mainly because I felt too reckless, and because most useful builds I found to play were too boring. MM, BiP, Orders, SS ... boring, and to play those boring builds, I got heroes that will never complain.

I didn't like ritualists nor dervishs that much either, they don't add anything interesting to the game that attracts my attention. An imba air spiker/healer , or an imba AoE warrior that relies on enchants...

Rangers are cool, and even though a bit boring, I like paragons alot too.

For versatility nothing beats rangers for martial weapon usage and necros for spellcasting due to their insane primary attribute effects, but my vote for most effective goes to paragon. Nothing stands up to ranged warrior dps, warrior class armor, the partywide protection of multiple prot monks, and partywide offensive buffs in a league of their own.

I play all 10 classes, but my main character's a necromancer. Always been my fav since the day I've made him; a combination between looks (necro armors will always be my favs) and gameplay. I had tried warrior (which I had deleted) and ele before, but warrior was too "up close and personal", since I wanted to observe how the game work and not have it in my face, yet the nuker was too straightforward to my tastes - I didn't want a black-mage-ish feeling. The necro was a good mix - it wasn't in my face, but less straightforward than nuking.

Over the time I've gone through several classes as my secondary; I had seemingly settled on my monk, because I played him more often, however I've been rediscovering my warrior, some kind of "better make the most of it! " feeling when I got her FoW armor. I think dervish and paragon were somewhat transition characters...

Then there's my monk. I like it, I play on him a lot, but I like playing on the offense better - hence why I often go as my warrior or my dervish these days. I'm pretty much everywhere and it annoys me, I can't focus on a class aside necro and warrior because I like playing them all.

Except nuker. Never liked it much - I solo farm and that's about all.

Paragons are indeed IMBA when played properly.

My main and favored class is the Warrior. Just love being at the front line hacking at stuff and really dishing the pain.

For varieties sake i do have a monk and a necro that i play occasionally.
I suck at actual monking though, so i tend to smite when i move through the stories and the toon is mainly my farming tool. My Necro doesn;t get [layed a lot anymore because of the fact that my warrior will be the one to do everthing worth doing in PvE and that takes time.

There's no class I don't like really.

Most effective has to be paragon as everything is easy.

Most fun would be Ritualist. The ability to change focus from support, direct damage, minions, spirits or a mix of thw above at anytime realy helps. They also have some unique style skills such as weapon spells and ancestors rage. They happen to be one of the best professions for elite areas, so if your not into pugging you get alot more possibilities open there.

Warrior is fun to play for the toys. No other professions weapons are as fun to collect and use for me than a warrior. Mesmers are the same with armour.

Monk is fun to play if your in a supportive mood.

I pretty muhc play a class depening on my mood. sometimes i just want to play assassin for a week, the next week i feel like playing ranger.

Rangers have always been my favorite, even before heroes. My Warrior and Assassin were also fun, but I never really liked casters (the only one I played all the way through any campaign was my Monk). But since heroes, my Ranger has really shined. Rangers are in a particular place in the battle that allows them to see everything thats going on and direct the heroes accordingly. When I play my Warrior or Assassin, it is a lot more difficult to focus on what I'm doing and effectively control 3 heroes at the same time. Likewise with my Monk, I'm much too focused on health bars and my own positioning (aka kiting) to control my heroes effectively.

So far I've played four characters through more than a full campaign, in the order of assassin, ritualist, ranger and necromancer.

Assassin

My first character, this was a blast to play and explore GW with. I found pve with the sin challenging, but pvp seemed to come slightly more naturally, though still difficult. As I played it more, I perceived that (in addition to the ongoing sin-nerfage) this was not entirely due to my newbiness, but that Anet's "balance" department (and I use the term loosely) in fact favors other classes to be pvp work-houses... despite my idea that an assassin should by definition excel in pvp, warriors, rangers, hexers, monks simply outclass them.

Ritualist

After getting tired of just playing the sin (and numerous pvp characters) I thought to give the rit a try, since I enjoyed Faction's first "special" profession so much. The rit proved to fit a pve role much better, what with very effective area damage and spirits. Additionally, I absolutely loved the tremendous increase in versatility. On the other hand, along with the sin, the rit proved to still be somewhat of a redheaded stepchild in terms of pvp. A few trick builds were amusing for a while, spirit spammer, spirit's strength melee (take that, rangers), and then I discovered the 330 solo rit build. Farming hard mode alone was a great bit of fun, but I still wanted to find a profession I enjoyed playing in pve that also did well in pvp.

Ranger

I took this one through a campaign solely to have a decked out ranger for pvp. At this point I was pretty skilled at the game, and the strong ranger profession had no difficulty getting through a campaign. I set him up with an interrupt build, a spike build, the standard thumper setup, though I have yet to get touch skills and equipment to run that on my rp ranger. I never really took to the ranger, however.

Necro

After playing a ranger, this felt somewhat like playing my rit again, although it never "grabbed" me the way playing a rit did. But while the rit was somewhat experiment/mix and match skills as I go; at this point I knew exactly what to build for pve, so I set her up with minion master skills right off the bat, and then proceeded to an echo-spiteful spirit 55hp support for the UW. With that and the sick imba soul reaping, it was no sweat getting through a campaign. I have yet to set her up with a serious set of pvp skills (although echo spiteful spirit would probably suffice for pugs.)

Summary

The Necromancer is an "obviously" good profession, I just never really enjoyed playing it.

The Ranger is also good both in pvp and pve. I still run crit barrage with my sin over the ranger, but mostly because I have a good team setup with the sin, more areas available, and I have his heroes set up just the way I want them. Like the necro, I never fell in love with the ranger.

The Assassin... Ironically, although this is my most played and most familiar class... if I really want to do some meleeing in pvp, I now prefer to use my ranger with a hum drum thumper setup. (Or one of various pvp builds.) Enough said, other than that Anet fails.

Overall the Ritualist is my favorite class. Adequate enough for me to want to play it in pvp (more so than the assassin imo) and excellent in pve. In my opinion the most versatile class, and the most fun to play.

My First character was an Ele. This was at the recommendation of a friend, and I have to say the Ele is still one of my favorites. The ability to roast your enemies alive and cause massive AoE damage while you're at it will always go down in my books as a fun thing.

My second character as a Warrior. He was fun, though I have to say I didn't really see much point in continuing with him after I got him ascended. And I think that shows how I feel. I have no hate for them, I really like the class, just not as much as others.

My third was a Dervish. Absolute favorite; I wish Nightfall had been around when I first started so I could have tried dervishes earlier. The ability to survive in a thicket of enemies while causing a huge amount of damage to multiple foes is definitely a winner in my book.

My Fourth was a Ranger. I had a great time getting her started, but the abilities seemed lacking, though that was probably because I was comparing the Ranger to very high AoE damage dealers like an Ele and a Dervish. Barrage just didn't seem to cut it. :/

Fifth was a Paragon, got her off Istan, but didn't really advance her much; still saving up for some 15k armor though.

Sixth was a Monk. That was fun, though sadly I don't party with real people that much (Not in a very active guild :/). So I ended up more as a weakened Ele or Paragon because it's hard to lead Heros and Henchmen from the back lines. Got her R3 Survivor though.

Seventh was an Assassin. She's my most recent, so I guess time will tell. However, I am having a lot of fun playing her though now, and the Assassin is probably one of my favorite classes. What they lack in AoE damage they make up for in spike damage.

In short; I've found that I favor high amounts of damage, mostly in AoE form, but recently also in spike form. That being said, as I was playing them, the Elementalist, Dervish, and Assassin excelled. But the Warrior, Ranger, and Paragon didn't really cut it. And the Monk, well, I have a feeling I would really like monks if I PUGed or was in an active guild.

Mesmer - My personal favorite because its just so much fun. I get a lot more entertainment out of watching huge groups of warriors/dervs/assassins doing no damage or watching terrorwebs just stand there then I do out of actually killing stuff lol. Fast Casting is also a lot of fun to have(everytime I go back to another caster the casting times drive me crazy xD).

Necromancer - Tied with the warrior as the most powerful pve class imo, I've played through prophecies and factions with tons of necromancers(only went through gwen once with my the only necro I still have and only finished most of nightfall with him since nightfall and gwen are easily my least favorite campaigns.) I can steamroll through pretty much anything in pve with my necro and with SR I don't even need e-managment lol.

Warrior - Tied with Necromancer as the most powerful pve class imo, I deleted my warrior awhile back because I find it to be extremely boring. I was able to steamroll through nightfall and factions without any real effort but was so bored I quit playing gw for awhile because of it.

Elementalist - Took one through factions, found it to be extremely boring but still powerful, nothing compared to the warrior or necro though.

Paragon is the only one I haven't played to lvl 20 but I got bored and deleted the others to early for me to be able to have a good idea of how well they do in pve.

Well my favorite since factions came out is my Rit. I have done almost everything with my Rit and recently just learned how to solo with it as well. Way back before nightfall came out I would be the only rit in FoW and people would underestimate my rit. By the end of the run people were asking me what build I was using and would go off to make a Rit of their own. I have had quite a few people whisper me a few weeks or months after I play with them and say they to are enjoying their new Rit inspired by my runs with them.

From time to time I like to change it up and play with any other class depending on inventory space or the mood I am in.

As for least favorite anything other than my rit fall at about the same level.

Ranger is, and always has been, my favorite class. In multiple games, too. I always enjoyed being able to kill stuff before it can reach me. They are durable, fast, and versatile (can wield any weapon well). My favorite thing about running ranger is poison/interrupt bars. you can hurt a wide range of enemies, and interrupt multiple targets once you get really good. and dont have to move much in order to do so.

My least favorite...i would have to say assassin. too finicky with attacking, and you cant change targets mid-combo. I like the "thief" aspect of classes in some games, but assassin dies too easily for a front row fighter imo.

It's PvE, where you can just equip heroes/henchies to group with you. Or play with a group of people that rely more on skill and less on title rank. The fact that you can play through every area on the game without the assistance of a title or PvE skill means that (as much as I hate it) grinding only helps, but is not essential.

I've done the melee classes before in so many other games; Dervish (which I had long before "Sonata") got tiring quickly. I have a warrior sitting in my selection that I haven't moved past lvl 13.

I've done the mage things in many other games too. While I'm in the mids of making one (currently L18), it still feels like I've done it before.

Healers/Priest/Monks; been there, done that too although I am in the mids of making my first monk as well (Just a L5) :P

Archer/Ranger; Same thing. Been there, done that. Had one, was levelled, but just wasn't into it enough.

Para, can't say. I've yet to make one, but it's on my list of things to do.

Mesmer, though, it was different. It was tricky, for me anyways, at first because I've never played anything quite like a mesmer before. Now that Ive learned how it can be used in so many situations, it's been the most enjoyable class I've ever played to date. Plain and simple, it's fun.

My vote, isn't so much for Mesmer, but perhaps trying a class that sort of strays from the "generic" such as the mesmer, or Paragon (from what I can tell). Necro surely is a good choice as well.

I have a level 20 char of all 10 classes, most of them have at least a Protector title.

Based on playability and effectiveness, YMMV:

Ele: Most played, beat all 3 games mostly as Fire, now primarily used in PvP. Not at his best in HM.

Necro: 2nd most played, very adaptable, very effective in HM

Paragon: Incredibly effective in PvE; like the character but the ease of play can get boring, even in HM.

Assassin: After all the skill updates, very effective and lots of fun. HM is not a problem.

Mesmer: Not fun until I had my Ele cap SoI after I found an Elite Mesmer Tome. Now a total blast, and ridiculously deadly (halfway through the mission "Duh - hadn't realized we're in HM"). He and the Paragon are the only ones who have managed to Vanquish Morostov Trail with it's nasty multiple boss corner.

Warrior: Lot of fun, and a blast to customize build all the time. Not as effective as some of the others, but probably more fun to play. Only one I have bothered to get elite armor for (had to have dragon armor to go with Dragon Slash build).

Ranger: One of my favorites, lots of fun and lots of builds. And really cool looking. Fairly effective in HM also.

Ritualist: Just started getting back into, having lots of fun. The combination of party support and offense is great. Still working my way through the games, haven't done HM yet.

Dervish: Love the avatars, but don't really play much. So far is not as effective as the others, or as fun to play. But that might be because the heroes haven't gotten as much love as some of the others.

Monk: Boring. Started the character to try to play more with others, then discovered I rarely want to play with others, aside from SO. Though it can be both entertaining and challenging to keep the red up when PUGing. And you'll have no problem finding a group. But I also know I'm not particularly skilled with best monking practices.

I've played all 10 proffesions to some degree in PvE (completed at least 1 campaign with more than half of them) so here's my take on them and my favorites

1) Necro; arguably the best class for PvE (PvE skills excluded), lots of options for widespread damage, Minions are amazing, curses are beautiful and there's more than a few options for party support as well, all that's not mentioning the wonderful inherent energy management brought by soul reaping. And that gothic/villian style can't be beat.

2)Ritualist; the most versatile class I've ever seen, with excellent damage capabilities, healing, and defensive properties it's a great jack of all trades character that'll always have some trick to get you through any situation. Also they're some of the best looking characters in the game (what other class gives you free tattoos with every armor?)

3)Assassin; while not the most popular choice with their variety of PvE skills assassins are the most effecient physical damage dealers I've seen. Able to take down even the super high health baddies in late game PvE (and HM) with ease, assassins aren't to be overlooked.

4)Paragon; high armor and amazing party buffing/defense abilities makes the paragon a great choice. Combine with their PvE skills for leasurley cruise through most enemies, (this class is also one of the easiest to get survivor the "old fashioned way"). All in all a great class with damage comprable to warriors but with range and party support abilities that set it apart. Just...don't ask about the skirts.

5)Dervish; the enchantment crazy dervish is suprisingly durable and deadly. With the ever popular avatar elite forms providing ample boosts in combat ability and more than a few other options for damage and defensive boosts the dervish is a very competent frontline fighter. Just mind the enchantment removal.

6)Warrior; the classic, who hasn't tried a warrior at some point? they're the iconic frontline sword swingers. In PvE they're one of the easiest physical classess to pick up and play with little experience. They're very tough and require very little assembly (dervs and sins both usually require enchantments or pre battle skills active to reach their peak). Also they have the widest array of weapons for you to choose from, each is a good choice that brings with it a slightly different feel. All in all warriors are a solid choice though they won't win any awards for originiality.

7)Elementalist; again, the classic mage, thunderbolts and fireballs. Excellent damage abilities (which is the whole idea of this class). In my time playing one I found myself preferring the earth line, it's damage was plenty good with front runner skills like obsidian flame putting the hurt on even the toughest baddies, while earth's variety of defensive skills gave me (and my whole party) much better survivability. Ele's aren't as sophisticated as some other casters but they certantly get the job done no matter what element you lean towards.

8)Ranger; well rounded and tough, rangers were the first class I tried, with long range damage, conditions, and interrupts with the bow and lots of unique tricks (and traps ) to keep your enemies hurting. Rangers are very resilient and in worst case scenearios you'll often find yourself as the last one standing.

9)Mesmer; mesmers are an odd bunch, they focus mostly on shutting down priortiy targets, so for the most part the damage they do won't be noticable (as compared to say an ele). They have a tougher time in PvE than most others because for the most part their job is essentially an optional one (save a few pain in the arse baddies the absolutely require shutdown).

10)Monk; in all honesty I never got very far with my monk in PvE, I just found it frustrating very soon on. While the class itself is fun and refreshing to play, trying to play one while relying on a group of AI to kill things gets terribly frustrating very fast. I would recommend getting some friends to group with through most of PvE if going with monk.

So all in all, most proffesions are very competent but some have some definite advantages over others in PvE.

Physical damage dealers > casters. In hard mode and such, at least.

A few MS+DB assassins, a Splinter Weapon Ritualist, an Imbagon or two, and a couple of healing ritualists or necromancers, will make short work of most situations. (The Ritualists can bring utility as needed). No need for Warriors, Elementalists, or Monks (the 'holy' trinity).

As ye may have guessed, my favourite classes are the non-core classes.

i enjoyed playing an assassin immensely (only in human groups. doing it solo with hero/henchies makes being an assassin suck since they'll focus fire on your target and you never get a chain going!) . second favorite was necromancer -- curses ROCK. i'd enjoy necromancer the most if there was no need for corpses in death magic, that makes it difficult in areas without many corpses like end-game Prophecies.

rangers seemed too slow for my liking
elementalists were fun, but too often gimmicky
mesmers weren't needed much in PvE

never seriously played a ritualist, monk, or paragon. healing isn't my thing. i wish an MMO would come out that does away with healing altogether. it's a dumb mechanic.

ironically, i absolutely hated my warrior and dervish. especially the dervish: it felt as though i was casting spells on myself more often than fighting.

1)Ranger's my favorite. I admit, marginally effective in many situations--Great for interrupts and condition degens, not so hot at other things, but I've found her to be tremendously flexible and resilient.

2)Rit's 2nd fave. Went through most of Factions playing as a healer...convinced people that 1 monk and 1 rit would do fine in the missions. Nightfall skills only made the rit more useful. I love the possibilites a rit gives: spirit walls, spikes, and the weapon spells.

Both characters finished factions, EotN, and NF, ranger's finished Prophecies and rit's almost there.

After that, it's a hodgepodge: Paragon and Necro are great, but...meh. I haven't been interested in playing them.
