Heroes are an extension of my character and my account:
Main char = all heroes fully tricked, spears on all casters, color matched spears to the necros (olias = black greater guardian, livia = red dragon spear, MoW = destroyer spear), green focus items for curses and death necros from sorrows furnace (bortaks or some such... looks great on olias), green focus on death and on restore necro. +armor insignia on all (torturer), alternate shield set for all for better armor/hp when needed, Sup primary rune (curses, death), Sup vigor, minor alternate runes.
I used to use melee weapons on my casters, but that's always a mistake on the necros. Give em spears, 100% ftw. Why spear? 33% longer dazed, 33% longer poison, 33% longer weakness, +5 energy, etc etc. Lots of good reasons to use a spear. I use a voltaic on my main necro.
Anyhow... yeah - I set up the heroes. I play the game to enjoy it. Party wipe =/= enjoyment. Breezing through any area makes me feel like I'm doing ok.
My hero philosophy is this:
High Armor, Ranged Weapons. In HM, high armor has done more to keep my party alive than high HP. High HP and low armor just is an energy drain. High Armor and middle or low HP is almost always a better result for HM vanquishing or HM missions.
The thing that kills heroes most are the long-distance nukes. They can kite and run from melee, or hand back a bit, and block, etc. So... heavy boss elemental nukes are killer. The only way to avoid a heavy nuke is interupt or mitigate it with armor.
