How on earth can you argue that sportsmanship, good manners, and courtesy are a bad thing? I can't name one circumstance when being nice to someone was a worse option than being a jerk, where you earn more by making people hate you than being a good person.
and insulting as motivation? that's just plain horrible, how about wanting to win to get the nice respectful good job of your companions? B/c, I don't want to play a game w/ people who would insult me, regardless of skill level
Take for instance most major sports. They've all penalized grandstanding and gloating by those who do well. That's what the fans want to see. They want heated rivalry.

And personally, when I played sports as a kid, it annoyed me to have to do the "walk". Each team lined up and walked past each other saying nice things. What? That's not competition. If we won, we deserved to feel like it. If we lost, the other team deserved to brag. That's what winning is about.

Apparently everyone on this board seems to think that kissing your opponent's butt and giving them a hug is the way to go around here after you win. Sorry, but if I win, I'm going to remind you of it.

And honestly, when teams are forced to be cordial to each other after a match, it really does take away from the glory of the win. It's not about being an ass. There's a winner and loser in everything, so why is it just the most horrible thing in the world to point out to your opponent how badly you beat them? Because it's mean? It's competition.

Edit: And yes, there's a difference between gloating/bragging and being immature. You can still gloat and brag with maturity and not sound retarded.

Some people just cannot handle the internet. As for pointed a finger towards the veterans, don't be mistaken. I've seen more bad players call names at other bad players than actually see good seasoned veterans have a go at a bad player.
From my point of view : I don't even do the effort anymore to even open chat in AB/RA. In the past i have tried to give constructive critisism (in the style "healing breeze on your bar might not be the best option" "it's energy heavy, and does not give any direct advantage" "you're better of removing hexes/conditions instead of slapping on regen") only to get "STFU YOU NOOB I KNOW WHAT I'M DOIN" as answer.
Bad sportsmanship exists, anywhere, everywhere, at every skill level. Cannot do anything against it, except keeping your own behaviour on par with the standards you consider appropriate.

Being a former national rugby champion, i seriously disagree. After every game, we applaud the other team, no matter the actual match outcome (and sometimes that went over 80-0 in our favour). After the game, we have a chat about everything, drink a beer, have fun.

Competitive sports is NOT about rivalry. Rivalry leads to nothing but bad things. Winning is about winning, about knowing you won, about being glad you won. There's no need in constantly reminding the opponent of his loss. Surely, you can voice your satisfaction about your performance. It's all about the way in which you do it. Calling the opponent a "stupid idiot" is just lame.

There are lines in everything. That also counts for bragging. Brag in moderation

I just love to pug in starting area of the game. Usually i go with my gut feeling on who i'll pug with. before every mission i'll have a little chit chat with the players to knows if :

*1rst time on that mission; being playing for how long;
*I always ping my build and the builds of my heroes;
*In the case of unexperience players, i ALWAYS ask them if i can comment on their builds.
*My comments are always constructive.
*In the case of timed mission, I always explain the mission troughly before we enter it.
*In the case of a non timed mission i always explain what's up next.
*I never ''drag'' ppl in mission. If the mission is too low lvl for me, i ll bring some monk skills and play R/Mo.
*I always wait for slow loaders.

these are just a few of the thing i do to build my guild.(2 months and 7 member as of now)
I'm not interested in having some player who think they are great and suck.
I dont care if players are low lvl, dont log often or if they are totally new to the game. If they want to learn , i'm willing to share the little knowledge i have.
I consider myself a fairly good player, and having fun comes BEFORE accomplishment.
I dont need immature crap in GC .
Call me elitist if you want, i just want to choose well the ppl i play with every nite.

What good is playing this game if you cant share you success, experiences and failiures with online friends?

best definition of BAD player i can think of: I had just finished NF and wanted to do the Mallyx quest. Most answers i got to my requests for help were some ''LOL'' ''N00b!!!'' ''not the right build (then kick without explanations)'' ''UBr?''.

If there is something called a BAD player then this defines it for me.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with a lot of that. I do think that forced niceness is empty and meaningless, but haven't we all heard the expression "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all"? So far in my experiences that has proved to be good advice.
But the whole thing about how reminding people that you just beat them doesn't make you a jerk thing I don't see at all. Why do you need to remind them? they're dead and you aren't, they know you won. Going any further is just rubbing salt in the wound, which is, more or less, how I define a jerk. This goes hand in hand with bragging, the whole purpose of which is just to put people down to make your own ego bigger. And ego stroking at the cost of someone else's enjoyment is neither nice or mature.

EDIT: the guy above me seems like a nice person, Guild Wars would be more fun to play, imho, if more people were like that

I agree with RotteN: anonymity breeds bad manners. No matter how big or tough you are, you can't talk smack to someone face to face and think that they are just gonna take it. Meek guys have been known to beat the crap out of tough guys when they felt threatened. Seen it happen.

When you tell the team you beat (or who beat you), "you guys were great" and truly mean it, you are showing respect for them, even when they are sore losers (or winners). The "in your face crowd" neither gives respect, nor gains it with that attitude. I've completely given up on professional basketball because of the lack of respect that the players seem to have for one another. It's not the kind of behavior I want my children to grow up emulating.

Winning doesn't gain you respect. How you act gains you respect. Sincere appreciation of your adversary makes you a better person, whether you win or lose.

Arrogance is not the same as retarded i agree, but a combination of both in one post needs commenting on.

Besides i was a lock forward in divisional and representative rugby for a long time and i can assure you , that if an opponent had portrayed an attitude similar to matey , he would have been sat on his arse quick time, there is no place in sport for an attitude like that coupled to retardedness.
