well the issue to me is one of this:

what kind of loser imature smal minded person would even bother taking the time to actuly pull this scam? i mean really how hard is it to go farm your own
item? what ever it is, look it up and wiki tells you whaere it drops, what the monsters in the area... and thier skill bars even! so go farm it!

as for weather or not pple are retarded, no they are not.

not every one has been playing guild wars for 3 years. some just got the game last week. that makes them a noob. not a retard.

its the guy that falls for it twice that lacks common sense.

if you get scamed suck it up and learn .. dont QQ ti anyone about it. it will only get you laughed at and give the scammers the satisfaction.

as for the scammer, what ever floats your bot to make yourself feel better in this illusionary world, just remember it has no bearing on your real life inwitch you probably FAIL at.It does however reveal who you truly are when no one can see you behind your computer screen.and that is.. a thief!

now even though guild wars is just a game and you may think that pple are different in real life,
if they would be dis honest in something so trivial as a game what would they do given the opportunity in real life where the stakes are higher? if you steal in a game you have it in your nature to steal for real. and you area thief in your heart.

the only thing that stops a thief from stealing is the fear of getting caught and exposed. so in real life , you are the kind of person that would steal
if you didnt think you would get caught. that makes you.. a thief IN YOUR NATURE regardles weather or not you actualy physicaly steal, you remain the same at heart, a thief.

and only a thief will get upset at what i posted.

Talk like as if there are no scam tricks in other MMOs, even those that require monthly fees.

Non-monthly MMO's have some people that just wont think for a $100.
Ones with monthly payment requires ppl with more brains causing less scams. Opinion, Thats my 2 cents.

Regina, a simple dialogue box that pops up and says, "Dropping this item may result in you losing it.", would be enough. Much effort does not have to go into this. I'm fairly certain this scam doesn't apply to 99.99% of the population.

It's evident that MMOs with monthly fee or not will still have the same kind of people like any other games, check the fan forums in other MMOs, you still get scam lamenting threads, scaming is human nature, also part of reality.

Until there's an Auction Hall or a Mail system or a shared guild bank, you can't get rid of the drop item feature.

As it is, it's a pain in the butt to share items among guild mates. It's easiest right now to go out into explorable areas and drop crap you dont want for guildies/friends rather than open 50 odd trade windows.

I'm all for fixing this problem, but doing away with what's primitive but really the only way to share crap with friends, is not the answer.

Yeah...."dropping this item makes it "up for grabs" and any player may pick it up"

would probably solve the problem.

Suggestion:

Add scam prevention lessons into the tutorial

If noobs are clueless, the tutorial should help them a bit.
If its a veteran, and he still fall for such trick, then no amount of help given to him is helpful. Just let him be.

Do you really think all parents are always going to be sitting and supervising everything their child does in a game? (or have even read the EULA for that matter). Often parents don't take note of any age markings at all as "it's just a game", hence all the Grand Theft Auto outcries. There's been large discussions in the UK recently about remarking of age certificates for games and educating parents about them as they are quite naive on a games possible content.

No I do not think that parents acutally give two hoots what their child is doing, so long as it isn't illegal, which saddens me.

Its not needed and its stupid. people should realise that when dropping stuff guess what it will get taken. You wouldnt give someone your money in real life would you?
Stupid people cannot be protected.

On Topic: Perhaps the pop-ups would be similar to Nanny-statism, but there's only so much you can do when people aren't thinking for themselves, or not questioning motives. I highly doubt they'd let a stranger 'borrow' their car for a quick nip to the shops.

We just need a little check box when you first create a character that says "I'm New" or for an account thats over 6 months old that says "I'm an idiot". You check this box and you are immune to doing anything without a warning box comming up that asks if thi is what you really want to do.

Problem solved.

Want me to tell you why people do this? Because people are easy to exploit.

No matter how long you've played this game, the point still stands. You shouldn't be falling for this if you actually take notice, which you should be doing anyway. Be it real life, in a game or on eBay.

There's a trash can on your bag-bar in the inventory screen for that, you know...

You know what, I keep forgetting it's there. However I just find it easier to drop stuff as I keep all bags open when I'm out and about, and I can easily correct a mistake if I'm not paying that much attention.

So, how long have you been scamming people? Are you proud of this? I don't know how anyone can take any pride in anything that they did not legitimately achieve.

there is a pop-up confirming if we really want to trash an item, if we really want to accept a trade, if we really want to customize/dedicate an item, if we really want to do this and that...
why not one to confirm that we want to drop an item? even the trash pop-up says that you will lose this item forever or something to that effect.

This one, but also include a tick box that says "Don't ask again for this specific player." Limit that effect per zone.

If a player gets scammed past that, ignore it, because that's... Ugh. I can't even comprehend words to describe how silly that notion would be.

they didnt really do anything wrong.
sure, its not the "right thing to do,"
Now I think you are talking about two different ways of looking at it? The technical one (is there anything about it in the EULA or does Anet officially do anything agains it) and the moral one (is the action of scamming someone something a 'perfect' person would do?).
Personally I prefer looking at things the second way as the first way is just an excuse why you can do it (much like people who through a loophole in the law aren't punished for commiting a crime (which isn't a crime because of the loophole)).

Free will...I think it was Sartre who said you always have a free will? Even if asked to pay money with a gun to your head, so by that logic: people who pay should be laughed at because they could also have chosen to be shot? Now I know this situation is entirely different but I just want to point out that you should watch out a little with saying such things (and I off course wanted to sound clever )

To the people laughing/pointing at those who fall for this scam. I think what you are doing is to be looked at as a 'punishment' to the person who fell for it. I also think the bible says:
Quote:
"He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone"
No, I'm not religious but this is true in a way. If you've never done anything stupid, go ahead and laugh at the other people who fell for a scam. You've never done anything stupid, right?

Ah yes good times good times, apparently i scammed some guy because he put up 36k instead of 35k or something like that and i took it without knowing, but the worst ones are people who offer nothing and click accept in a desperate attempt to trick you.

For example, and I'm just fielding some ideas for general consideration:

* A pop up notification, asking players if they really want to drop their item(s)
* Change it so that players must give explicit permission for another player to pick up their dropped item, and display a pop up notification asking the player whether they want to allow another player to pick up their dropped item(s).
* A timer which would prevent another player from picking up dropped item(s) until time ran out
* Remove the drop item feature altogether (very drastic)
* Something else?
I'd go with a "Do really really want to do that? There's no good reason to drop things on the ground and other people can pick them up" pop-up with a "don't show this message again" option. That way unwise players get at least one more warning, and players who are wise to that trick only get annoyed once.
