This mornings update?
BenjZee
im just sure there was connection issues etc so the client tried fixing itself. For all we know these people could've been hacked for some total different reason, or theyre lying and just want to cause an uproar (hey we're on guru)?

Yeah i've had several small updates whenever i open Guild Wars the past two days.
When i asked, none of my guildies have gotten it, a couple friends have. No major gameplay problems, though.

when i asked in guild chat if there was a new build someone said the client sometimes downloads files when theres an error58 on connect. never heard of that before.

Just got 2 updates - first one refused to connect fully, second took about 5 seconds to download it. Logging on right now.
S'what I got about 2 minutes ago.

This isn't good :S.... I'm afraid to log in now.

Yeah I didn't get any updates but I was getting some truly horrid lag. Was attempting to run myself to Droks and got glued to the ground partway through Snake Dance...got disconnected. Reconnected to find myself in Shing Jea...I haven't been there since this morning! o.O
Anyway, dunno if it's even related....but I am done playing for the night after that.

...actually now its stuck on 1 file remaining
strange, it opened and closed about 4 times, each one was about 300-400kb in size
even a normal update is only twice

I highly doubt it's a conspiracy. I dunno what it is, no new update notes have gone up since the 14th, but I'm curious as to why some people get it, some don't, and what it is exactly.
Ariena Najea
After the 20-minute-mark lag (57 seconds ftw), I started a randomway team in Halls. Zaishen was fine, Underworld was fine, Fetid towards the end it got a little laggy, and we lost. Reforming the group after a couple leavers, I was getting 5 second pings interspersed with 2-3 seconds of functionality. I eventually gave up playing for tonight xD
Lady Lozza
I got a small update too, but only once. The game was a bit more laggy that normal, but not horribly so. 500ms ping maybe, which given that mine doesn't normally go below 300, isn't a big deal for me. Biggest thing I found was that loading screens took a little while, longer than usual on a 300-500 ping.
For those saying that it might be corruption, in my experience the client always reports corruption and subsequent repair attempts, unless this has been changed in the last 4 months (since my last corruption and repair warning). If it didn't finish the initial download then, in my experience, the update will download again.
Something odd, maybe related - I saw a fellow guildie online when they definately were not. To say it is odd is an understatement.
When I received the update I was running no other programs except perhaps nTune monitor - and I can't be certain of that either.
As for programs I run with GW - FireFox 3, nTune, Nvidia control panel, Steam, and TS.

The update server is probably acting wonky. Which is kind of weird, because the Update Server in general is just sent a single packet that contains your version number (when you open your Options menu, it's that number in the bottom left - Gw 26,333 being the latest version), which is then checked by the server (which has its own packet that stores the current Live server version number presumably, in this case also 26,333.), and if they don't match it updates you to that version. (Note: This is based on what limited research is garnered from their .dat structure and such, and in general how update servers work)
I have no idea why it would be giving anybody "updates" unless if for some reason the update server isn't interpreting the update packet correct ("seeing" it as the wrong number or something)...for those who have received them, is your version number 26,333?
EDIT: Though I doubt any of the updates have ever finished, I haven't seen someone say they downloaded an update 100%, yet. It could just be the update server erroneously sending you the 26,333 update again, then not finishing because you already have it.
That's not odd at all, the Guild and Friends servers have been acting terrible over the past few weeks. In an AB all 12 of the people playing lost connection to the Guild server (which means no guild or alliance chat, and everyone in there looks like they have no guild), and me and a ton of others have had our flist disappear and reappear, or better yet having Recent Teammates listing people I've never met in my game time, so! Nothing to be worried about, just those servers acting crazy.

No, I SAW, physically saw her character online. I know the Guild list and Friends list has been a bit wonky, so when she didn't show up there it didn't bother me much. But she didn't respond to any chat at all while I was in town - her character was almost acting as though there was a lot of lag on her end. Like I said, it was just odd...
Also the small 3mb update people were talking about - I got that one 100%. Haven't downloaded anything else since, I got that one the 17th/18th August.

er..how do you know she wasn't on..and just lagging?
Lady Lozza

It was work time for her.

I see. It just seems HIGHLY unlikely that a character would be online when the person wasn't..acting all crazy like.
.hack anyone?
.hack anyone?
Lady Lozza
Sorin, I have thought hack, but that isn't my first thought. My thought is this - if the guild list/friends list is screwy then perhaps it is possible that the server has not registered the disconnect properly. No I did not stick around 10 minutes to find out.
How I came to this conclusion rather than hack -
Said player, logs on for about 30 minutes before going to work.
Said player was seen in a town where I would expect to see them during those 30 mins before they headed off to work.
I am not sure that it is possible for said player to log in from work - hence my conclusion of not actually being online.

Just received that wonky update here in SoCal. Decided to not log in. Update took longer than usual as it seemed as if it got stuck at one point while downloading/decompressing.
No third party anything here. Was just using IE at the time.

I had the same thing twice. Once on Saturday, the other one a few hours ago. Stuck at downloading/decompressing but according to my firewall the download was about 3mb's. The application changes prompting for another download, a smaller one. Firewall detects another application change, patcher loads to 100% just like normal. I log in, all my characters are normal, nothing abnormal going on. I would say the problem is on the patcher server...
DarkNecrid
There's no reason not to login, it is pretty impossible for someone to do something that would ruin your account through their update server.
Lady Lozza
Tbh it sounds like their server is on the fritz. I would think that it would take a lot of effort to hack the update server, and setup a new patch which diverts account information - which is what some people seem to be suggesting here.
If you don't touch dodgy software, have a firewall, antivirus (and scan for malicious software frequently), and you use different email addresses for your forum, game, support, and whatever accounts, then you should be fairly safe.

I fired up GW on my other computer (laptop this time) and it did not prompt to download anything. I guess it happens at random? Funny thing is that my laptop is the one without any virus protection.
I guess you're right, it's on the server side. Thanks for bringing out the paranoia in me, ArenaNet.

I have 2 computers I regularly play guild wars on swapping around which logs into which of my 2 accounts depending on what I'm doing. One computer runs Vista 64 and is my all around email/web browsing computer. The other runs XP and is only used for gaming. So that's my setup, with that out of the way...
I can't remember whether I saw an update or not. But yesterday, when I first tried to log in, which was either the late am or early pm, I had a weird problem.
Specifically the login screen on both computers would not accept more than 8 characters in the password field. At first I thought maybe they'd done something to restrict password length(it's happened to me on web sites before). But I waited a bit, killed and restarted the clients and it started working normally again.
Before it started working, I tried swapping the accounts around, and still ran into the 8 character limit. Specifically it would just stop taking input after the 8th * appeared. Hitting, backspace would drop it back to 7 *s.
I have no clue what caused it, the only thing I can think of on my end is some weird hiccup with synergy(software used to share keyboard/mouse between computers). But I'd guess it was the login servers, or some problem with communicating with them. Maybe the client defaults to 8 character passwords if it doesn't receive some configuration data from the server.
Hope this helps.

I never got it but I was pveing this morning and all the euros DC'd at one time. (5 people lol) Was pretty wierd.

Fantastic. I come back from a 12 month break and now i'm paranoyed about logging in (i mean i have to completely re-download EVERY file in the game, but still...).
Smurf Minions
I had like 12 hours ago some terrible lag while monking in gvg (first a very fast dc, and reconnect) then a longer one, i kept hearing vent but gw just stopped like err 7, i had to take out the network cable and then i could reconnect (i did put it in again after :P) then i had another dc. A few days ago i also had this laggy thing of 4 secs good ping then a ping of 2000 then again and again.
Didn't have an update though.

FrAnt1c??
I had the update twice 2 days ago, loaded to 100% each time. Still have got all my gear and characters up to this day. Had some terrible lag last night though ( ~12 hours ago ).
I dont use texmod, or any other dodgy program. Perhaps itunes or IE2 but other than that, I'm clean
Imo, it's just the Anet servers acting up, no biggie, the people that got their accounts hacked, well that's a shame, but I don't think this "update" is the reason. Let's just wait and see untill Anet finds out the problem and lets not jump to any conclusions... Yet.

no dc's, or 007's or random updates. the game is working just fine for me.... cant wait until September for the new hero ^_^!
also i think if it happens to some one again right down the ip of the server once you get in game.

I've had this 'update' happen 3 times since early saturday morning, every time while experiencing massive (50,000 ping!) lag and all kinds of other probably lag-related oddities. (Like, the guild roster showing me logged on with the wrong character name, appearing to have no guild at all, etc.)

Got it too, asked on alliance chat... But nobody knew what it was.

It "decompressed" one file several times over before it finally loaded GW.
That being said, I never had this "ghost update" last night unlike most of my Alliance members.
Drop of Fear
had this update last sunday, 3-4mb of stuff. once in guild wars i wasnt able to connect due to the "can't find any login server" error....
ran -image downloaded another 3-4mb and was working properly again.
rushed to plaync.com changing my password and all fine atm

Same sort of thing here. Last couple of days, think first might have been late Saturday night or early Sunday. After the "update" login is noticeably hangy, but no actual login error displayed.
