Golems...?

1) No it's not bannable. Simply being an asshole is not a bannable offense.
2) Every district (*except* in the international district) I visited during the event had a wall of golems around the King, purposely blocking the view for everyone else.
Why? Probably because they thought it was funny, possibly because they thought the King picks paper-scissors-rock competitors by how big they are.
3) Give every NPC a Spirit of Detonication for next event plz, Anet, or we'll have the same sad bullshit happening again.

Do you get something special for seeing the mad king? No.
If you were actually losing something, then yes, a temporary ban may happen, but you aren't.
crazybanshee
My first reaction was, wtf why do you even need to see the mad king, don't be one of the horde of idiots standing there spamming /pickme the entire time. But On second thought, I do understand people trying to take screenshots of mad king, that would really bother me too. I don't know what they can do about it, unless someone went around and took the names of all the people doing it, there's not much they can do about it now. Maybe they'll do something for future holidays, disable tonics in town or something that people find equally irritating that only partly solves the problem.

It's one thing what we think should result in a ban - and it's a different thing what A.Net decides will.
And based on what we have seen - like I said - I seriously doubt this will result in a ban. Some might consider this a bit crappy but it's so bloody insignificant that I couldn't care less.

well, its not like you have to actually be able to "SEE" the king to participate. I personally didn't have a problem with them. I rather enjoyed watching them fall apart when they were killed. A lot more entertaining then watching something with a pumpkin on its head (or maybe it is the kings head...who really knows for sure), do nothing but stand there.

guru is a great place to go for some lulz.
If it really matters so much to you, move up to the king and go into first person, you will be able to see through the other players you are standing inside.

Well actually if you want to report, you can, rules of conduct number 1: on the basis that they have cause you distress resulting in you having to ask them to move constantly which resulted in many unwanted attention to you, and you were at the same time unable to enjoy the game fully.
While playing Guild Wars, you must respect the rights of others and their rights to play and enjoy the game. To this end, you may not defraud, harass, threaten, or cause distress and/or unwanted attention to other players. You will not report players maliciously, or cause them to be investigated without reason. |
or another problem being, i enjoy messing with people ingame, and by this rule i have the right to enjoy the game, but at the same time by this rule i don't have the right to mess with people in game.
so don't take this at face value.

I did this once...the first thought in my mind, and words from my mouth (onto vent, not to myself...) was "aha awesome, I can completely engulf the king with this tonic. And i can Crotch Bambi people all standing around him!"
Then got some rude and distressful comments about being a homosexual and cigarette, So i left and made myself a sandwich because I didn't want to see the comments anymore.

It's a-hole behavior to tonic yourself into something that big and block others' view of the Mad King. There's no doubt about that. These people, much like those who deliberately name their characters something profane or spam "ALT+F4 blah blah blah" during events, know exactly what they're doing, and could very well be punished accordingly. They are trying to ruin it for others, not just the ones who've been to 3 other halloween events, but maybe those newer players who might've never seen the Mad King before. Is this the type of behavior that ANet wants events to degenerate into from this point on?
ANet should definitely come up with some sort of solution for people who are bothered by this. Whether that entails giving out temp bans for the a-holes in question, disabling the use of tonics in the main towns around event "windows" (ie. the hour window around the Mad King's/other demonstrative event NPCs' arrival or something), or simply moving these demonstrative event NPCs to a new, unblockable, location is up to them.
I'm a fan of tonics in general, especially the multi-person tonic formations you often see in big towns from time to time (great stuff). I'd hate to see tonics get taken down to size (literally and figuratively speaking) permanently because of this. I would ask ANet to come up with some sort of solution for this, though, whatever that may be. As annoying as these Golem-blockers may be, putting up with the constant cries of people being annoyed at it will also be a hinderance to further event enjoyment.
Personally, I've seen all the event stuff before so I'm neutral on this issue. I was indeed in a district affected by Golem blockers last night (although only once out of the 4-5 Mad King shows I went to), and can certainly understand where the complaints are coming from.

Ok so now I feel guilty about the real world but you could use your specious arguments as a reason for not doing anything.
Drunk driving ignore it people are starving. Rape ignore it Atomic war is a real possibility. We are in a game forum talking about a game, references to horrifying real world disasters have no place here. btw what have YOU done to reduce any one of the disasters you mention ? Arenanet should either reduce the golem size or alter the festivals to allow people to enjoy them. |
As for the real world, assholes exist there like anywhere else...starting a thread over something that is SO easily remidied by moving to another district seems excessive...not like its a spawn killer in Halo and you can play because of it...you have the option of moving...simple. The discussion on banning people over being jerks...*sighs*...just doesn't seem important. It isn't like you can't play the game because someone is breaking your computer...just blocking your view. Real world horror put into perspective the petiness of the whole complaint (no offense intended to anyone truely harmed by the event, and I hope you weren't).
As for what I've done about real world horror...lot's of stuff, though it doesn't seem enough. I by local produce, drive a car that gets 40+ MPG and am ordering one that runs on compressed air next year (when they are available), I volunteer at the County building working with "at risk" kids, worked 5 years at Parks and Rec doing the same thing, I grow some of my own food, buy fair trade goods, compost, recycle my trash, keep my thermostat at 60 degrees, use organic and environmentally friendly products where/when possible, spent extra on organic produce, eat a high fibre diet and keep myself healthy (to keep from contributing to health care issues related to type 2 diabetes), contribute to fund raisers for local schools, have adopted 3 pets from the Humaine Society, can my own jams and preserves, I'm monogomistic and have never cheated on my first or second wife...keeeping STDs from contaminating my loved ones (HAD to address herpes issue...still no cure...poor, poor folks), have chosen not to have kids because of world population issues, have adopted an unwanted child (for a year before his mom wanted him back), I arrive at work a 1/2 hour early and leave as many as 3 hours late (I'm a teacher, so the extra time is helping kids), and as a teacher I raise the conciousness of my students through art, journalism and media literacy practices...Many of the subjects I cover include the afformentioned list...I know, I know...it isn't nearly enough, but I'm working on it.
Still...all-in-all...I think the simplest solution to the Golem issue is simply changing districts or ignoring it...*shrugs*...still seems a wasted topic for a thread to me. I don't see ANet having to do anything for me to enjoy the festival any more than I already do.

Wow. You guys are all such gigantic carebears.
People like you make the game suck. So what, he used a tonic and participated in the event. Get the hell out you whining idiots. You don't need to see anything for the Mad King, if you're mad about it go to another district. I hope everyone who reports those people gets banned instead. Idiots.

I guess I took exeption to the real world horror bit was partly because it isnt relevant to an escapist medium forum and partly because your suggestion to change districts was an impossible option.
I could start in district one all is well mad king arrives and 4 people take tonics.
Do I jump districts one by one hoping to find no golems should I message all my friends in the same district to come with me.
Or should I just complain about the bad behaviour of others.
I act in the real world when peoples bad behaviour annoys me and others so why not in a game.
Perspective as you say is good but if it means giving in to online idiots I say no.
Edited
I should add that yes the Golems are good and they were at times funny, I too enjoyed the way they fell to bits when they got something wrong during MKTs appearance.
What wasn't really on was some of them standing in the way for the whole time MKt was there.
I also admit that some of the Golems just didnt think about it at the time, well you know now so next year I expect either Golems will be absent or there will be hundreds of em.

I know I had a fun blocking Mad King Thorn this Halloween. I don't know how many people said they were going to report me, but I know it was alot. I even had one guy who said he reported me for botting because I was a golem. Good times, good times.

Next time, just start a guild petition to report them...if ANet cares at all, there will be some minor consequence...if not, agree to meet in the international districts next time...usually nicer folks there.

I think the QQing would have been more entertaining than the usual chat during an event myself.. shame I was in Asian dists and missed it.

Initially, I did simply because I thought it was funny if a big chunk gets broken everytime mad king slays the audience. I wasn't even standing in front of the mad king, so I only accidentally blocked the view of some ppl initially.
Since ppl were such an as5, I thought they deserved their fun to be ruined. So I moved up to exactly in front of the mad king and had fun with it. They asked for it.
For those who missed it, this is what it was like:
It's not my fault if I'm big. ANET should either make the mad king twice as big next year, or the golems half as small.
A mod should close this thread.

Whats next? you want to ban tall male warriors? Those people where partaking in an event and enjoying themselves. any "grief" caused was indirect. You dont have to see the mad king, just what he says. People cannot block his chat popups. |
As I said before, EVERY time I went to this event, there was at least one person who ran right up to the King and said "lol" when people asked him to move.

How dare people complain about golems. These complaints are a violation of the following rule:
By harassing, insulting, and threatening these users who are simply wishing to be near the Mad King, many of you are clearly guilty and should probably be banned.

Yeah, that's what griefing is.
ANet should know by now that you can't give people the opportunity to ruin for other people on the net, because the fact that they can't get a faceful of fist means they're on a permanent powertrip, and intoxicated with their own leetness will take every such opportunity they find.

I don't see how this makes me a "care bear". If anything, it's you guys who seem to be over reacting. All I've said is that I would have liked to be able to see the Mad King, he's one of the reasons to attend the festival. Having him blocked out clearly did ruin the event for many. I'm not screaming, I'm not trying to claim anyone should be banned, just that something should be done in the future to prevent this kind of thing. I enjoy seeing the Mad King, and I would have liked to be able to take a few screens of him. Why do you think it's okay for these players to go out of their way to try and ruin the event for others?
So get over your selves, your opinions aren't automatically better just because it's something you don't care about. Throwing insults at me doesn't change anything.

If you can receive a temp ban for spamming all chat or for having a name offensive to some, then yes, this could easily qualify too.
I love the "arguments" of the pro-griefers.
You could go to another district. Same applies to spamming all chat, no?
You should stop being a care-bear. Ad hominem FTW!
There's world hunger, dude. Non sequitur FTW!
You make me feel bad by criticizing this on a forum. Candidate for dumbest post of the thread.
It doesn't bother me, so it shouldn't bother you. Narcissism FTW!
Those of you opposed to the griefing, however, should have a little sympathy for the other side. Something like 70% of people who bully or grief were physically or sexually abused by an older relative when they were a child. They try to hurt others to help them deal with that pain. A little compassion is appropriate.
