FYI information, the latest numbers from an A-net news release are 5 million copies sold. That's across three campaigns. I dont know about you, but I bought all three campaigns and have two other accounts that have been given to me by friends that quit.
Assuming all people bought all three campaigns and were all playing shortly after Nightfall, at it's "peak" it had 1.667M players. And let's not kid ourselves here, many of those that bought GW and Factions didn't even bother with Nightfall and quit long before it was released. Yes, GW is dying. Why do you think all the servers have been combined? |

Oh, they're losing a lot of people. They're losing PvP players who are tired of this unbalanced game. They're losing old players who are sick of ANet dumbing down the game. They're losing old players who are sick of ANet catering to the bad players who think they deserve everything. They're losing PvE players because of the lack of end game content. They're losing PvE players because of the lack of new content. |
Every half decent pvp player knows the noob/pro skill-gap has closed by a mile ever since Nightfall came out, and that only a total skill overhaul can fix it....which Anet has failed to do. The Meta has been rotting in its own filth for far too long. Players get tired of it, and leave.
I'm amazed at the people who were satisfied with the last couple of months 4~5 skill so-called "balance updates". Especially last weeks. Fixing one or two borked skills...while leaving 200 others that were just as borked alone ...is not what you call a balance update. That's what you call a RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing joke.

Another doomsday thread. More people are leaving than joining. Go to the store and look to see if GW is even still on the shelves. If it is, notice how many copies are still on shelf and the price. Not long ago Target was selling EotN for only $10, and now they don't carry it anymore. But for more on a related subject, check out this link. http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10332831

ill be back when GW2 comes out.

I had been away from the game and the forums since July(08). Came back to game a week ago and the forums tonight. There are fewer people in game, but it seems they are for the most part, getting along better than they had in awhile. Even if asked to Ping, nobody is being told to change this or that (at least as far as I have experienced.) Groups are not that hard to get or join. I am actually having fun again with the game.
As for the forums, still talking about the death of GW, still waiting for GW2.
Have a nice night.

That doesn't mean it stops costing them money to run their severs 24/7. And they are STILL turning a profit every quarter, which means enough new people (or people buying new expansions/accounts) for them to cover expenses.
While they may be on a decline since it is an older game after all, I'd never judge GW as anything other then a phenominal, unexpected success. Edit: And if you go on any Warhammer boards Arkonas you will already see "OMG Warhammer is dying" posts on their boards too!!! They are having a mini exodus as the 30 day free subscription has expired and many people did not renew. Honestly, boards are melodramatic. GW has been dying since 2005, just like Warhammer is apparently already dying. Get over it. |

Depends where, here in Belgium there are more copies of GW displayed on shelfs than any other game and they are quite expensive. I guess it is not dying here. To the contrary.

GW may be losing people (like every other "old" game I think), I may have 90% of my friend list composed of people that leaved the game now, but gw did pretty well IMO:

Call me stupid, We dont even know yet if GW2 will support GW1 with the HoM, who knows..GW2 might make players go back to GW1 to unlock things for GW2. New Guildwars players might be like, well crap..i have to buy GW1 to get all the cool stuff this guy from GW1 has.
Who knows...we dont know yet. The fact that even i quit Guild Wars when Factions was released and came back at Nightfall, after i completed it and wanted Animate Flesh Golem for my Minnion Master. My main character is now a Factions character and my main title bearer. You can get sick of this game..and come back to it and still enjoy it, much like i still play Starcraft every two years or so when i get bored.
To say that GW is dying is mere rubbish. I have lots of people that log on after long breaks from the game, to send me a pm and say "Hey..you remember me?", and im like umm...not really can you tell me what we did together? "Ya..we used to B/P in tombs..we were the first ones to bring an orders necro..remember now?" Its times like that that keep me playing, my friends list changes and i make new friends and reaquaint with old friends. I cant do that with games i no longer pay for.

And I'm tired of people saying games like GW can't be dead or no new content caused it to die. This is a bit off topic...but...imagine a game where constant new content isn't needed and replayability lasts over a longer period of time...perhaps a competitive game? Eh Guild Wars was never THAT though...

You wouldnt know competitive if it punched you in the face!
HA-TA-RA-GvG-AB ?
This is the most complex competitive game there is.
I belive the designers used PvE as a learning curve to train players to compete in PvP. True, if you just buy GW's and jump into PvP your going to get your butt stomped and be like what the heck am i doing wrong? This is where knowing what classes do what, and what skills counter what, and most of us learned all this by playing through the game multiple times with multiple characters. I have played 11k hours now and im still learning. I cant fathom that you can say that GW isnt competitive.

do u kno how much it takes to fund servers for 12million ppl? |
Just the sales of the basic game will have covered the cost of running the servers indefinitely (10 million copies times 20 dollars per game for Blizzard, minus at most 100 million in development cost = 100 million dolllars. That's a lot of server time. A L O T.)
Basically the monthly fees are pure profit for Blizzard. I've often wondered what they do with all the money, they don't seem to be developing WoW2 yet and there's only so many corporate jets you can buy before it gets stale.
I've never understood why people feel the need to apologize for Blizzard making immense profit. They do because they can, it's what it's all about.
Also, to the person who said that WoW is having it's own share of "WoW is dying!" posts... WoW subscription numbers are no longer growing but have levelled off, but it'll still be going for many years.
Darkobra
Arkantos has a point. The reason I quit was because I'd seen it all, done it all. I enjoyed my time on GW, but GW:EN was a horrible expansion and left quite a bitter taste in my mouth. It's like getting through a hot fudge sundae only to find rat piss floating at the bottom of it.
Still, I'm holding high hopes from GW2, where they claimed to have learned from their mistakes.

To be exact and accurate, I could only find two interesting bit of similar news (from a reputable source, I've discarded many others) where Blizzard revealed their costs, including paying staff:
http://www.kotaku.com.au/games/2008/...ce_2004-2.html
http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquir...s-huge-profits
200millions$ in 4 years! Unbelievable, margin profit of near 200% in millions of dollars!?! (very very rought estimates: [1 million over 4 years to account for the current 11 and the fact that they started low] x 4 x 12months x [10dollars to take a low estimate] =~ 5x10power8 = half a billion dollars )
For that amount of money, now I think WoW is not value for money at all (I think GW is better value for money over the years), or as the inquirer says "milking a cash elephant".

Well, it's worth whatever people are willing to pay, and people are apparently willing to pay $40 for the game followed by $15 per month for years on end.
Half a billion is IMO a very low estimate, but you can't really blame Blizzard for making a pharmaceutical-company-sized profit: they're simply enormously successful.

Word of advice: if you quit GW, don't bother with WoW. The gameplay in WoW is worse and the only reason its more popular is because there is simply more of it and the grinding is designed to consume time without letting you realize it. Its a carrot on a stick.

I know many people who have quit GW for WoW and liked it, and many who have quit GW for WoW and didn't like it. You can read up on WoW, you can ask people for their opinions, but in the end, you need to try it out yourself.

In the same mindset as this sentiment, Why are we comparing GW to WOW or WAR, why are we not comparing it to CS, TF2, or even Starcraft?
GW was designed to be competitive. The end-game was designed to be PvP, not high-end raid dungeon-timesinks. The bulk of the GW playing was designed to be like the bulk of CS, TF2, or Starcraft playing.

Is that true really? I want an honest WoW opinion because I never really played it extensively. Its one of those games people either hate or love I rarely hear in between. I just know I've lost several friends to it and I call them all tards for paying 15 bucks a month to shack up in their house.

Still, if you actually enjoy hearing teenagers call each other failures at a game because their gear is worse than their own, you're welcome to give it a shot. Go on to their forums, look around. You'll get your answer. Not a bad single player, though.

And that's what GW really is too, people calling each other n00bs because the other dude got killed. WoW is a decent game and isn't anywhere near as bad as people would make it out to be. If anything just do the free trial and see if you like it or not. Personally, I play both WoW and GW and they are pretty different and have their pros and cons. The biggest difference is that WoW requires a much bigger commitment than GW does.

I classify WoW in the same class as Mapel Story..a cartoony game made for kids and adolescents, with less intelligence than Final Fantasy X2.

Sure, I want the transition--I want to see the areas that we'll encounter.
Mox was a nice update--getting the hero, going on the looong quest, as were the titan quests. I'd forgotten about those till someone mentioned them here. I'd take more content like that.
Small hard dungeons?
It's interesting that so many people still talk about WoW--that's a game that's even older than GW. One of my guildies is close to jumping ship for WoW on one of those free private servers or whatever.
I guess I'll just listen to the echoes in my guild hall.
I think what would make a serious difference in our outlook is a sense that the updates coming will do things to keep us involved:
Will the skill balance be significant?
Will new maps be introduced in PvP, or old ones resurrected?
Will there be other evolutions or revisions in the PvP games?
Will there be new quests added on some kind of semi-regular basis?
Will there be revisions to the skills used by mobs of monsters, or revisions to the makeup of those mobs? (necro-rit charr healers, anyone?)
I suppose the above are unrealistic, given the resources devoted to the game. I'd never claim these things are "easy" to insert, program, etc...but they sure would be nice.
Now, what I mean by "a sense" that these will be coming...well, I'd like more information about WHAT the current team does. I know that no one wants to spoil surprises, but the secrecy surrounding some updates is a bit much. Maybe it's because we publicly jump all over every hint and blow it out of proportion...but I feel little hope that much will come down the pipe now, other than skill changes...
**crosses fingers for a humdinger of an update.**

I stopped playing all computer games two years ago because of real life time constraints, and only a few months ago started playing games again. I tried WoW, Mabinogi, Perfect World, and look! I'm back here where I started -- at Guild Wars. I couldn't be happier.

Old Man Of Ascalon
I have stopped playing and most of the roughly 20-30 people I used to play with have also quit.
Let me be perfectly clear on this: We didn't quit because it's a bad game.
Most everyone simply quit because we had completed all of the PvE content short of the "grind until your fingers bleed" stuff and well, you can only do the repetitive PvP stuff for so long before you get bored of it.
Guild Wars was and still is the very best MMO I've played and I love it. I still log in from time to time to check for birthday presents or just to see if any of my old comrades happen to be online but I'm afraid my long long buddy list is always empty. I really wish they would have continued to add more content in at a slower pace instead of just letting the game die in a gutter (which is really how it seems) and I find the absolute lack of any news, screens, videos, trailers, etc for the upcoming GW2 to be very discouraging.
Alas, I patiently await any news which as a matter of fact was why I was looking at these forums for the first time in months. But not to my surprise not even a snippet of news to be found.
