The definition of a rare weapon
Yang Whirlwind
Seems you are the only one who feels this is an invalid comparison.
It has nothing to do with whether or not unconditionals could be created by the megabyte truckload or not, it has something to do with the fact the they never will.
Anet removed them from the drop tables for a reason and the basis for that decision has not changed.
Art often takes a great leap in value when the artist dies. Why,- is the art suddenly better? No, but since the artist died, we now know exactly how many pieces are available, no new ones will ever be created. That is what drives up the price in those cases, not the actual artistic value.
If a coin from the 12.th century is one of only five known to exist, it will have a high value.
If a huge chest of identical coins are suddenly discovered, the price plummets! (seen examples of this)
As always Guild Wars emulates real life in this.
As earlier quoted, "rare" is defined by the dictionary as something scarce and unusual.
Weapons do not come more scarce or unusual than the unconditionals!

A rare item is, by definition, rare.
So let us define: what is rare?
Really rare is that something useful comes out of a thread like this.

I think the simplest deffinition of rare is often the best for most. That means that those items that are in low supply are rare and those that appear in large quantities are not.
However I also think we need to divide items that still drop from those that don't occur anymore. The reason being that if the item is so rare it is beyond 99% of the players reach then it might as well not exist. An example would be the mini-pet Frog. Only 1 exists and no other person will ever get one, as far as I am aware of at least.
This breaks down all items in GW into 3 catagories.
1) Common
2) Rare
3) Unique

rarity is just drop rate, nothing more.Prices on those items are the other thing...that all depends on ppl.
Still,if we can talk about rare weapons in game......q8 15% unconditional>req8 15^50 dwarven axe>everything else (yes, this dwarven is far more rarer than allmightly q8 15^50 crystalline)

Anyways, I have 4-5 10/10 sundering sword hilts from completing this quest with my newer Prophecies characters. I can confirm as of yesterday (completed quest) the 10/10 sundering mod is present on the reward sword and that it can be salvaged off. As for other weapons, I seem to recall a hammer or axe reward with 10/10 but I do not remember where.

i have -50 major smiting rune. i can't sell it to the trader.

I've got a 6-9 dmg no req purple scimitar with a +12%/-1 health regen and a +1dmg/-1 health vampiric mod. Purples with -1 health regen inherents are now always +13% or +14%, not +12%. (http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Weapon_modifier) The +1/-1 blue vamp mods haven't dropped for 2 1/2 years (http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Vampiric).
Rare? Yeah. Valuable? No, I don't think so.

isn't rarity simply directly correlated with drop rate? roughly correlated to value (ie increasing rarity -> increasing value) but not a hard rule.
fwiw, I have a r8 15>50 swamp club, a r8 15>50 magmas and a r8 15>50 summit hammer. collected em a long time ago and just let em gather dust, I guess
my warrior has a set of r8 15>50 broadswords (canthan) and r8 15>50 runic axes customized for her use. chump change for some of the big dogs here, but good enough to keep me satisfied indefinitely.

Guess the joke is on the people who've paid good money for these.

We see many Q8 weapon, but do they excist?
The reason i ask is that many of the Screencaps we see are from the old BMP days.

do you mean do they still drop? I think q8 weapons still drop, but just really rare, kind of like q7 back before. As for "do they exist" uhh yeah I am using like 8 right now.
Nightow
Yes, q8's still drop. I've seen 2 q8 shields drop within the last 3 months. One was in CoF, other one was in the Hidden City in NF. I've never seen a q8 weapon drop though, even after playing for over 3 years now. I think q8 weapons are rarer than shields and possibly foci.

Req8 weapons still drop, but max inscribable req8 weapons seem to be fairly specific, I think they are limited to swords, shields & off hands. I'm interested to see if anyone can provide screens to prove otherwise

Officially "Rare" is any 'gold' item
Unofficially its whatever the market dictates is rare. Perfect dual modded low req shields seem to hold their value best atm, as do r7s and ... High end minipets (/sigh)
In my honest opinion nothing with an inscription slot should constitute as truely rare as they all drop 'perfect' to all intents and purposes.

I'd include r8 axes and r8 hammers with the r7s, since there are no r7 max hammers (as far as I'm aware) and r7 axes are so rare that I'd say they pretty much don't exist for all intents and purposes (unlike r7 swords, which are way more common).

I myself had a req7 15^50 Spikey Warhammer, know of a req7 15/ench Foehammer, and I had several (don't remember - like 2 or 3) req7 axes, I also know of some more:
req7 15^50 War Axe, Summit Axe, Great Axe, Cleaver; req7 15/ench Cleaver; req7 14/st Great Axe; req7 15/ench Hand Axe; req7 15/-5 Cleaver
PS: If you need screens... search the forums - I am too busy atm, sorry

No the question was, why many people use old screencap in BMP solution when they present them (tell about all the Q8 they have)....maybe they dont have them any more or have sold them?
Offen when people show those weapon and you ask for them, they dont sell or just have sold to a fantastic prize.
..i was just wondering ^^
(BMP was only used the first year in GW, then it was chanced to JPG)

I have at least one R8 Eye of the North skin, so yes they do still drop. Max Highlander sword in case you were wondering.

I remember there used to be a certain chest in a remote shiverpeaks area that would drop something like 5-15 items, including dwarven and serpent axes, and crystalline swords. IIRC it had been nerfed and then removed...
Then there was a Sorrow's furnace chest - I think in the middle of the Kilroy quest, that did the same but for a single item, usually purple.
So is there any place other than the HoH chest to get those 3 items anymore?
What I don't understand is, oldschool items are not really "oldschool" since they still drop (no negs excluded ofc). I see Mursaat Hammers and the like going for a bazillion plat when the Ring of Fire missions are still there. What gives?

Never seen one drop, but req8 being rare that is only logical.
Has anyone got one lately, or even know a person that found one in game they can be sure of?

I was once shown a max gold staff that had no requirement on it. Sadly the player stopped playing soon after Factions was released. It dropped in the first few weeks of the game and was removed from the tables (alongside the unconditional damage martial weapons). No, I don't have any pictures to back up my claim - I was shown it in trade a long time ago and lost those screenshots in a pc format. You'll either have to trust me or decide not to.
Rarest thing I have is an uninscribable Emblazoned Defender r9 tactics +30/2 stance that dropped around 4 weeks after Factions was released. And even that isn't rare these days.

They don't drop very often in a req 8/9 15^50 format.

They weren't very rare or valuable back in the first weeks when they dropped but today they're extremelly rare as only very few are kept on active accounts.

I will get flamed for this and technically it´s not a "real" weapon, it´s a staff, but who cares.
Some of you might say: Meh, what an ugly skin and that´s not worth a lot,
but when you talk about raritiy, this one is right up there and in contrast to the unconditionals
who have been discussed about a hundred times before, it´s quite new.

Uhh yeah sure Shadow staff inscri for that attri is fairly rare. but still they do still drop. like insc Ghostlys and shadow staffs supposed only drop for primary attris. atleast according several ppl and wiki.
still theres fairly many of those around for other attris so im positively sure they still drop, personally dont know where tho.

Ghostly inscripted non-primary and shaddow-staff inscripted non-primary are not in the same league.
What I like about the shaddow staff is exactly the fact, that it still might drop, but where are all those non-primary attribute shaddow staffs?
I can´t see them.
I don´t want to hyjack this thread, I just wanted to pick up the initial question of the thread starter:
What have we left?
And point out that there are a lot of nice super-rare items left in the game that don´t start with uncond... and prener... or even oldscho...

That one weapon/armor piece with the fugly skin that completely feels out of place on the character wearing it, requires nothing more than hours to grind for materials.

Just a ? out of curiosity.....Why are any of these worth soo much since GW2 is up and comming?..It seems that once GW2 comes out, all of these will pretty much lose all value. It would also appear that ded minis have this same issue. Once GW2 comes out the majority of players that are willing to spend any considerable funds on such an item will be indulged in GW2 vs concerned over items in GW that cannot be transferred over. So, if this catch 22 holds water, that age increases value (time from availablity) and impending loss of value decreases cost....Why are these worth so much?.......I'm not trying to degrade anything or anyone....just curious.

ofc the seller wouldn't be able to enjoy his $$ either.
what i'm hoping for in gw2 is loads of animated weapons (caster too ffs)

Two factors
First you underestimate the still present demand for these rare items. Hundreds of active districts at wintersday are proof that against all odds GW1 ist still running pretty wild. A lot of veterans are coming back from absence and new players buying the cheap 4-campaign offers.
On the other hand there were always big collectors going inactive taking a lot of those rare items with them or for example customise rare weapons or minis or even get banned from the game for whatever reason. All this rises demand and shortens supply which results in rising prices.
The second factor is quite obvius: GW2 ist still far far away and even when it hits the shelves, rare GW1 items will still be rare GW1 items and things like HOM and a cheap price for a lot of good content will make GW1 still fairly attractive for a lot of players. So even then prices will probaly not fall that much.

There better be some real rare weapons in GW2, or I wil be dissapointed to the max.
Boss weapons should be customized for the person it drops for, really unique items should be tradable. But what do I know.
