The definition of a rare weapon
Morticia of Cyana
All weapons (and maybe armor) that drop should be customized for the player that gets the drop, just like in other games. That would keep the economy quiet.

brilliant plan, i sure would love a dryad bow for my mesmer, and a heal celestial compass for my warrior, customized drops is such a brilliant idea.

You know what would really kick ass, IMO. If very high end weapons were signed, kind of like the Nicholas items are. Something like "dropped on 1/27/10 for Voodoo Rage in the Shards of Orr dungeon". Maybe certain players could develop reputations and stuff with their name on it would be desirable.

Account customized, yes.

god forbid people actually start doing things to get rare items instead of standing around in kamadan trading for them. account customization sounds quite swell to me as well, make people work for their pretty objects instead of powertrading so they can pretend to be pro. ~__~

When i'm selling its rare.....when i'm buying its not!

I have a few rare items. Well rare for me, have a req 8 Chaos Axe 15% in stance. A req 8 blood magic staff 8/10 and a req 8 air wand 5^50/10. Sure not worth much but it's not easy to get a wand like that, the FoW items are probably still pretty attainable though.

Class based customized weapons drops would cure a lot of the problems the GW economy has. Too bad it's too late in the game to implement such a thing.

golds of those "rare" skins are what I consider rare now. I loved it way back in the day when the mods actually determined what was rare.
Shriketalon
Problem was, back when the mods made things rare, you had to be rich enough to afford a proper weapon to play a class to its full potential.
Remember playing a caster in prophecies? That was the pits. Getting a proper gold staff to drop with decent mods, a low requirement, and a full 20% HSR took longer than completing the actual game. Most just ran around with an energy stick.

I'm never really thought as items as rare but it's a personal thing. Sure things drop less often then others but you could still come across it with the right funds or an item of equal value.
With that said I'd call a rare item an item only for me. Like Gaile and her Froggy Scepter.

If I have it and you don't, its rare
Seem to me more players are using a voltaic spears then, say, someone using a banded spear.

But maybe, and I say maybe, customization to USE.
Either eat the cake or sell it, but not both.
Currently, most people, especially with caster weapons, and for ALL offhand items, don't customize them.
Why? Becase they'll may want to sell it later.
Force customization to use them, like with armors, and you would only customize the ones you REALLY want to use, and ALWAYS sell the rest, since keeping them would be useless, for to use them, you have to customize them. So you'll have to either decide to use or sell them.
That would drastically reduce equipped item hoarding.
To put it simply, an item sink.
If you keep in the market a rare weapon, the next ones will have their values decreased. A weapon with 1000000 like it in the market will always have a lower value than one that has only 1000 appearances. That's basic.
If people can't sell the ones they use, they won't make money after using the item for a long time.
But, before that, I would change customization to be fully account wide, like with Zaishen keys, and add customization maluses for uncustomized offhand (so PvP items are unnafected, since once customized would be just like now, but suffer some penalties when uncustomized), and better customization bonuses for caster weapons. After doing that the downside of having to customize would be at least slightly... shadowed for a customization revamp: "Hey! I can't sell this after using it!" - "Well, at least any of your other characters and heroes in the account can".

I've got a r8 15^50 dye-able Shadow Bow
Customized so it's worthless in a sense, but i still like the rare quality of it.

And that has anything to do with buying/selling rare weapons how?
Edit: Oh i see what you're saying, but playing an online game just to get rich is pretty sad. Compensating for something? |
edit. after re-reading, to clarify what i was saying is that, ffs, some of these people have 5+ characters thru all the campagns, all thats left is sitting around and trading, or get shat upon by the pvp community for not doing that 20 hours a day. sorry, i have more fun in town trading/chatting with people now than i do actually doing things. if that makes any sort of sense.

yeah cuz i waste hours upon hours on this game to give away my things and not be rich? no. thats the goal ultimately in the game, progression. getting rich is part of progression. esp when you have multiple characters through every campagn.

Guild Wars was meant to be a non-grinding game, but all people do these days is grinding themselves to death for a VS or BDS. The game has lost it's value. I wish the good old pug-days were back.

A very nice idea! People who object to this will most likely be elitist with tons of fancy stuff. Go play WoW if you want that.

really? I know gwg isnt the epitome of critical thinking but if this is all we can come up with we might want to reconsider where the human race is heading

I dislike the customize-upon-use idea, too. Not because I have a bunch of shiny stuff I want to use and then sell, but rather because I can't afford to have every single character completely kitted out with perfect weapons and thus share weapons between them - even between both of my accounts (My Dervish and Assassin share the same staff for running. My Mesmer and two Monks share the same caster set. Why? Less time and money spent getting weapons and modding them, or farming a green/collector items, and since I'm only using one character at a time anyway, why not).

...Or, brilliant 3rd option, if you're reduced to trading for fun, QUIT. play something else. that or pvp, but then again, most of you probably prefer trading because you're actually good at that.

Yup, devote your life to GW despite the fact that you're bored enough to stand around in kamadan trading, just because of some pixels you've acquired. Your posts make tons of sense.
chaosincarnate87
just because you find something boring doesn't mean everyone else does. pvp is boring as shit to me, but there's a pretty sizable community for that, just as there is trading, or speed clearing (which again, is boring as shit) or anything else... sorry i enjoy getting on occasionally to trade or talk to some guildies, god forbid any of us ever be social, no no no farm farm farm.... none of YOUR posts make any damn sense.

Ignoring some of your imposed rules, the Heaven's Arch, Bonecrusher, and Storm Ember are the 3 rarest items in the game. They're Korean Coke items from the Coca-cola promotion done in 2005. They were blue/spawnable but the promotion for them was only directed towards Koreans and of the few that got the Coke items, none still play.
