The zealous fanaticism surrounding Anet's defense here amuses me. The fanboys are all coming out to defend it against accusations of vaporware.

If your parents told you "no more clothes" until 2008, and you waited, 2008 came, nothing, and they shut up about it and wouldn't say anything, you'd be a bit pissed.

GW2 is vaporware and Anet knows it. A company with ANY self-respect would never do this.

You release information to keep your target audience engaged. Either Anet's marketing is in the shitter, their game is non-existent, or both.

Maybe if enough people call GW2 vaporware, Anet might release something to prove it's not. It's worth a try.

Daesu, you're obviously a fairly smart person, why are you arguing semantics about whether or not it's vaporware? Your arguments are flawed, and you know that, but you try to cover it up with misdirection.

GW2 was announced, and we were told beta in 2008. That's it, nothing more.

Was it announced? Yes. Were we given some kind of date? Yes. Have we been given anything since? No. Did they make the date? No.

Vaporware.

If it doesn't turn out to be vaporware, will we hear you apologise for your wrong judgment?
Haha why would anyone apologise for that? Wrong judgment is not something to apologise about by definition, and also it's not wrong judgment to conclude that there is nothing about GW2 released yet.

Besides, it seems in fact that Anet should apologise to the players instead. I want my beta in 2008! Not a game I know virtually nothing about, at some point in time in 2010.

Provided of course that Anet is in business by then, you never know.
It would be a shame if their great no subscription fee model turned out to be not quite as profitable as expected, and now with the economic recession, they have to lay off people, and never finishing GW2. You hear these kinds of stories all the time about games being left half finished or even 90% finished.

Even if I didn't agree with the term vaporware which is used too loosely (and it really doesn't apply here; I still have faith in the Anet team), I'd have to point out he is still making some very valid points sometimes.
I wonder if the "big silence" strategy will pay off or whether the "big splash' will turn out to be "meh, took you so long to come up with this?" type of welcome. (I can see that happening if gw2 turns out to be Wow-cloned)

since what we have been told about the 'changes' for gw2 (engine etc).....I never planned on buying it anyways. If it takes a few more years for its development that means a few more years they will keep the gw servers up and running so I can play.
Personally its being vaporware has allowed me to keep playing the ONLY game I play---then thats just fine by me.
The only problem is HOW many years will they keep it up if gw2 really never does come out?

This, is my theory.

They've basically moved off a few of the GW2 development team to Aion, because it's basically the most eagerly awaited title.

They're basically going to bring out Aion first, then bring out GW2 6 months - a year later, incase Aion is a big flop, or everyone leaves after everything has been done by everyone, and they havn't made any kind of announcements for expansion packs/add ons or any kind of extra content.

But, IF Aion is a GOOD game, with LOTS of content, and LOTS of happy players, and LOTS of people continuosly(sp?[no spell check on Opera >_>]) I predict that GW2 will be a massive flop, as they havn't announced anything yet, and most of the GW2 producers will move over to Aion (why wouldn't why? Why try revive a dead game with hardly any publicity when you could focus on a great game, and make it into a fantastic game that is as good as Diablo 2, times 2.)

TL;DR:

If Aion is a flop, GW2 is there as back up, Aion turns into Korean PvP playground
If GW2 is a flop, most GW2 producers will move to Aion, GW2 will most likely become GW as it is now, but instead of taking 3 years, taking 6 months - 1 year.

Remember, this is my prediction, and I havn't been here for about 6 months, and I havn't researched anything.

True, it has been a few months since I checked the status on Aion. Open beta ended the end of Nov. and closed began in China in Dec. Still only estimated dates for N.Amer. and Eur.

That being said, it still proves my point that NCSoft is capable of providing details of a game's progress with concrete evidence from day one. Even with the numerous set backs and delays that Aion has been faced with. Instead of the "whisper on the wind" approach they are taking with GW2.

Regardless of what it is, if you are going to hype something then you better be prepared to back it up. If you can't do that, then don't hype it. They chose to make the big build up and have yet to produce substantiated proof that they can follow through, or even so much as an explanation of why they haven't met what they said they were going to do.

If GW2 is vaporware, I will have to end all no reason to live! j/k

Any other game without a monthly fee, I really do not believe in spending money every month for a game I already paid for just to continue to access it. I know it is the norm but IMO it is BS. Free w/micro transactions maybe, but would likely go back to non MMO type games. D3 if battle.net cleaned up all the freaking spam. Been a long time since I was there.

I don't plan my video gaming that far ahead. In fact, I don't plan it at all. If I'm bored, I play a game or read a book or watch a movie.

However, I've already stopped playing GW and switched back to LOTRO and WoW because there's nothing to do anymore but grind for rep and points. If Guild Wars 2 comes out (which I don't think it will, I think something will come out but it will be a new game and billed as a "spiritual successor" to Guild Wars) and it looks interesting, I'll play it.

No skin off my back either way, really.

I wish there were some way to count up how many epic failures occur on the internet everyday in irrelevant analogy form... what does being a best-selling author have to do with marketing a video game franchise in an increasingly crowded niche market?

If Beta was suppose to be in late 2008 then technically ANet is only about 3 weeks late and all of you are shouting bloody mary!

Oh no, they are a terrible company the beta is 3 weeks late, this is unheard of!

Starcraft 2.

I'll still be playing GW1 from time to time, probably. I mean, I stopped playing GW actively well over a year ago, but I log on almost every week to rank some corpses in ABs.

I beleive people are shouting bloody mary because because 3 weeks ago a beta should have been happening, and there no new information since 07 to replace it. Add to it Gaile's "08 new years resolution" which none of it came true, people are wondering if major stepbacks have happened, and maybe there is a possiblity the game might not make it through. NCSofts fiancial troubles, lincessing a new game engine last fall, and the silence. Hell even i think people would be happy with "New information this summer", so people know when to look forward to more information, because the current void can't be working.

You have a great point there if you ignore the fact that there's also no information at all on the game. No class or race detail, no area information, no screenshots, no nothing.

But, yea, when you take that tiny little slice of what's happening and blithely discard all that other "unimportant" information, you have a really good point.

By this stage of development most games have basic demo movies, screenshots, etc. So either they're keeping this stuff awfully secret (because of what marketing value is free hype, right?), or they don't have anything.

Occam's razor.

Despite all the information, I cannot believe how pessimistic people are about the existance of GW2; almost to the extent they don't want it released to say 'Told you so'. As a fansite, I would have expected the members here to be supportive, and yes critical, but only towards things they have experienced first hand.

The facts are:
  • Guild Wars 2 has been announced that it's in development and has a team working on it
  • Guild Wars 2 is featured on the official Guild Wars website
  • Eye of the North was released to bridge GW1 to GW2 via the Hall of Monuments and with its storyline (Great Destroyer, Sylvari, dragons)
  • Just recently, an update has been announced that the Hall of Monuments will become account based - this is classed as progress toward GW2
  • On the website, it is stated the GW2 Beta will be closer to the actual release
  • "Guild Wars 2 is a very large and ambitious game, and Guild Wars players rightfully have very high expectations of its quality. We want players to be absolutely blown away by the game the first time they experience it." - This answers why there is no early development screenshots
  • There is an official Guild Wars 2 wiki
  • The storyline behind Guild Wars was openly announced

The people I have read, hopping onto this 'Vapourware' bandwagon either are sick of GW1 and want something new, don't like GW1, are impatient or all three. That's my opinion.

If GW2 turns out to be vaporware, which I believe it is, then that's no problem to me. I'll probably have stopped playing GW in a few months, and then I'll just be waiting for a new game to take my fancy.

If it's not, then it's just going to be me saying, "What took you so long," and no guarantees that I'll play it. If it's such a late release, another game might have my attention by then. Of course, if they don't screw up transfer of names/rewards/guilds/etc. between the two, then I'll be more inclined to buy GW2 than another game, and with the way people have been feeling about it lately, I almost feel like I'd be part of a different community of players, instead of a large player base from GW.

For how long it's been since ANet announced GW2, they would need to show me in-game footage, or something very similar, in order for me to believe that it's not just a hoax, and that they've actually put decent time into it.

No matter what happens, if the servers don't shut down, I'll probably go back to GW for festival events and the like, because those to me are the most entertaining times I have on GW. Nothing else can catch my attention like they do, and considering how much effort ANet is channeling into GW now, I don't think anything else ever will.
