To be able to trigger things like Barbs and MoP.
What the above person said and I'll add this... with a spear you won't accidentally click on a foe and dash straight into the line of fire like you would with a sword. It helps you keep your distance. For all intent and purposes caster spears are superior to caster swords/axes in every single way. Only reason people use swords/axes nowadays is either for looks or they just don't know any better.

In the case of a Warrior. You'll notice in many PvP matches a Warrior would often switch to a spear set because it helps them fuel adrenaline at range unlike a standard axe/sword which requires you to be up close and personal in order to gain any benefits at all.

I understand that but an ER infuser shouldn't be targeting enemies anyway. So that takes out the risk of running towards enemies, and even if you do, its not hard to stop.

Triggering barbs and MoP sounds ok but if you are attacking, you aren't healing/protoing.

i used to use the spirit of forgotten, +5/20% green spear, but now i prefer swords, because i love my caster icy dragon sword lol, plus it glows in the color of healing ... best animated sword ever IMO
as far as offhand goes, im thinking about getting the prot offhand from this guy
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Kehtu, for the +45/dmg-2 mods... like many have said, the 20/20 dont matter much here, or maybe a max shield with 45/-2 mods, tho u lose 12 energy but gains 8armor... help me decide lol

the only problem with this build is with ZMZB PUGs who don't get what you are tying to do lol, most of the time people would rather get 2 heroes, instead of getting a elemonk.... tho sometimes you do run into people that knows it, and may even ask if you can switch to it, very rarely... sometimes i go back to the ZM i just finished just to see how long it takes for someone to take me lol, very fun

I'm using a chaos axe right now and I'll probably get a estorage cc eventually so everything is glowing.

Firstly, it's just force of habit for a lot of people. Secondly, if there's a concrete block in your house that you keep falling over, would you just leave it there on the basis it's "not hard to avoid"?

And not only that, I try to cast GDW on recharge too. I prefer more GDW and extra PSes and SBs on the party over chucking spears/wanding.

VITAL BLESSING FULLY COMPENSATES FOR THE -75 HEALTH LOSS FROM THE SUPERIOR RUNE!! And not only does it fully compensate, it adds close to an extra 100 health as well!! I can't quite figure out if you were trying to be sarcastic or not... I usually don't maintain anything without an Essence, glyph is unreliable and easily interrupted, atleast in my opinion.

And when I am maintaining, it's Protective Bond and Life Attunment.

Also, I don't like to assume the party will accumulate any Death Penalty. That's NEGATIVE THINKING!!!!1

My ER ele uses a bow so it's not even in cast range of any foes.
