How Charitable are You?
blood4blood
I'm fairly generous in pre-searing, helping people find collector's for armor, joining random people for the rez sig quest, answering questions, free gate services, helping with charr runs/power levelling for free, etc. But I can't stand random people who just beg for free stuff in general chat, or worse, PM me when I don't know them at all.
Everywhere else in the game I tend to H/H everything and largely ignore chat - I've encountered a few too many obnoxious idiots and beggars to bother most of the time.

i handed out around my randomly saved up 50 vials of silver dye, 30~ vials of all other dyes in mixed dye packages to people in ascalon city before.
people were generally grateful, but some random person PMd me and asked me why im trying to "buy friendship." telling me that it was an expensive endeavor.
lol.
that person also took a mixed package from me.

Speaking of wanting answers, how many people are working on GW1? Are thier going to content updates like april anymore? Are you going to condiser suggestions? With all the people are working on GW2, I'm expecting a GTA3 to GTA4 kind of deal, a OMFG pure awesomesause on GW2. I hope you aim to please On topic: |
We do and have been considering suggestions. Like Martin, just because you do not see us posting doesn't mean we aren't watching. We have players in half a dozen other forums that are passing along similar ideas and suggestions.
GW GTA, huh? I don't think we will see much car (wagon???) stealing in GW2 as a central gameplay mechanic, but you never know. 200 years in the timeline is a long time, so maybe someone in Tyria will invent the car by then.
We always aim to please, though how people receive the result differs because people are all different.
ON topic!
This is basically my attitude to helping people. When I see someone in an outpost asking questions about quests or asking for directions, I try to help them out.
Occasionally, if I have time, I will help with a quest.
Zapper901
I am usually very charitable. I have had many huge giveaways in Kamadan, handing out various mods, greens, golds, minipets, other random stuff, and even some ectos and cash. I also help out in missions quite a bit, and answer any question a person asks.
Of course, there are people who, upon receiving a small bit of help, demand more help on quests and wind up yelling at me for money. *sigh*

The pumkin king
I am charitable but depends to who, to friends and guildies and such, sure, helping with a mish ain't a prob.
If they ask for money though, i gotta say, no sorry to most of them, I would lend money to some guildies and some friends but surely not everybody...

Haxor
I'm usually pretty charitable, though it's divided in to different categories.
True friends
The people whom I've been playing with such a long time, I know I can trust them. These are the people I would trust with account details, or need be even credit card details. (Note: I'm not a moron. I'm careful with both, and a good enough judge of character to not get screwed over with this.) What's mine is theirs. If one of these people asks me for 100 ecto, they'll get it - with or without paying back. They won't, though, as it's not in their nature. These are the people I throw birthday parties for, whom I give (multiple) 15k armorsets, tormented weapons, expensive minipets and so-on. I've even gone as far as giving a few of them real-life presents on their birthdays if I cannot afford ingame presents at the time.
Guildies
Our guild is pretty exclusive, and I can thus afford to be extremely generous with them as well. I refuse payment for anything I give, unless it's something that I myself purchased for over 200k - in which case it's at cost or whatever they can afford. I also chip in to the full extent that my bank allows for their birthdays, and help them with whatever they need - unless I *really* don't feel like it and they don't push me.
Alliance
I don't accept payment for anything they need under 100k, at or over that is at cost. I help with missions, quests, advice and so-on. I also regularly give away items that I don't really care about but that others might like in AC.
Random strangers (Friendly)
I've done my share of random good deeds. Just last week with the gloom seeds for Nicolas, I spent countless hours in ToA every day, just answering questions about FoW/UW and so-on. I've also been known to give my share of free black widow runs, forgemaster runs and so-on. I'll also PM people who are using outdated concepts (eg W/E obsidian tank) and inform them that these are no longer being used. After that I usually provide them with builds and advice if they don't rage like a 5 year old. I've also been known to give free armor packages (dye, materials, money, runes and insignia's) to friendly new players, and so-on. Lastly I make a habit of zoning around the "hard" missions (Tahnaki Temple, Ring of Fire, Jennur's Horde) and helping noob groups on one condition: I know what I'm doing, so take my advice.
Random strangers (Unfriendly)
We all know the kind. Beggars who "need" 15k for their elite armor, people who have "bin pleyin sinse beta noob!!" and refuse advice, scammers. You know, your basic low-level trash. These people get mocked and ridiculed in any way I can think of. Especially the people who ask me to join their party to help, agree to my previously mentioned condition (I know what I'm doing, listen to my advice.), and then rage after I politely suggest that spamming RoF as a warrior might not be the most efficient way of dealing with things. If anyone gives me attitude, they're getting it back, and no help for them.
Lastly, but definitely not least:
Events
These depend highly upon what I think of the event, if they're put out by a solo person or by an alliance, and how charitable I'm feeling. Generally I give little to nothing, unless it's by my own guild or alliance. However when organized by a (legit) fellow player on his own, with a few friends, I might donate a lot. A good example would be the recent Royal Ascalon Masquerade Ball, for which I donated close to (if not over) 1 million in gold, materials and items.
Of course all of this also depends on how I feel that particular day.

I personally am very close to Haxor.
Since I've accomplished everything I wanted, but still enjoy playing GW, I map around helping people at random points in the game.
I also started a thread here giving free help when asked. I closed that thread because of inability of the guru forum members to follow instructions (posting a "thank you" was too much I guess) and a case of asking for help and not following "I know what I'm doing, so take my advice."
But, I still look at the services requested section and reply to help requests, no charge, so long as it isn't a "I will be AFK, while you play for me request".

Nanood
Charitable..? That's where other people give me free stuff.
Reinfire
I am pretty charitable towards guildies. I give away weapon mods and alcohol for free if someone needs something.
Being charitable in public happens occasionally. The main downpart is that I get the feeling that the greedy people profit more from this than the needy
Also when I trade I offer too much gold or ask too little. But that maybe that has also something to do with the fact that I dont want to spend 30 min in Kamadan just to save 1 or 2 K

Hyperventilate
I'm only charitable to people I know. I will offer advice and assistance, but I don't give anything to anyone unless they're a personal friend of mine.
My reasoning is, if I can do get it on my own, so can you, so get off your lazy ass.

I have issues with saying, "no," therefore I'm pretty charitable against my better wishes sometimes.
I give my GW BFFs anything they ask for that I can provide, because I want to. The key is to ask for stuff in moderation and keep it reasonable then people usually return the favour.
If I spawn in Kamadan AD6 and I detect a newbie who'd like something, who is clearly new and behaves and types somewhat graciously, I will give them what they're orping for if I have it.

I noticed a few comments about not finding any nice people in GW.
The times when I have personally interacted with rude and mean people has been actually a little uncommon for me. And this is on the characters I've had way before I joined ArenaNet, not my official account. From a few months after launch, to present, when I play, a sizable number of people I interact with have been friendly. Yes, there are a few snarky people or people who make fun of newbies, but in general I've been pleasantly surprised with how nice the people I've talked to are. Maybe it's the time of day or the district. *shrug* I know that my personal experience is just an anecdote, and others have a different experience of how other players treat them... But maybe I was just spoiled really early on in the game by all the cool people in-town, and now I just try to see the positives. I guess my early experience with the game just influences how I treat other people. One good turn deserves another and all.

^ I think the bad eggs are memorable and leave a mark on the mind, whereas the decent folk are aligned with normal expectations of civil, primary-educated people and, therefore, blend in.
For about every 50 people in a district that are going about business normally, there is probably just 1 eejit who sticks out like a sore thumb.

I only give free items/gold to people in my guild....and even then only those I somewhat know...and not to new guildies........I was disappointed too many times by new members that left the Guild after they got what they wanted.
Giving makes me feel good.
/Angelica
PS. I must say I have seldom found nasty/rude people in all my four years of playing GW.

I'd have to agree with makosi.
I see so many people here on guru complaining about bad players that it puzzles me as to why I never meet any of them myself.
There's only one player I remember who was kind of an idiot,
and it was some random assassin who after finishing a hero battle against me, proceeded to whisper me random flames for some reason o.O

Same. I don't understand the people that get all bent out of shape over a few hundred gold's worth of fake money. Or those that waste far too much time in town selling overpriced items that ultimately don't sell.

STORY OF THE DAY
Interesting... that happened to a random person while I was going to lunch at school today. This guy grabbed a womans' purse. My Tae Kwon Do instincts comes in, I finger strike his sternum, then garbed his arm, knuckle strike his temple, then threw him on the ground. As I returned the purse, the lady gave me a reward for returning her make up bag... So I helped the thief up, said sorry, gave him $5 and told him to get some lunch. He gave a thousand thank you's for being so nice and the lady was pissed that I let the thief go after he attempted theft. Didn't get anyone's names.

Anyways, I'm a 6th Gup and I won Gold in point sparring. Yes, there is life outside of Guild Wars. (And the guy was barely 5 feet and had muscle of a 10 year old girl, I would have turn tailed and got out of the way if he had any weapon/looks like a pro boxer.) The truth hurts, I get intimidated easily.
Back on topic:
Being, I was a noob that spent everything I had to get a weapon/armor. But have nothing else for salvage kits/ID kits. God all of the pricey rare materials for armor then forget that each costs 1k ea. Going Ring of Fire with PuG's and failing all the time. I didn't know what guildies are there for. Getting very lost finding an elite are just the few of the many problems. I started the game with no one to help.
I synphsize for beginners, it's a pain when you have no idea what to do. I try to help whenever I can.

I rarely give stuff away for free and I never give runs...ever. I'm willing to help out newbies with tips and advice but I rarely go with them on the missions.
I feel that if they are incapable of finishing a mission or quest on their own, or incapable of earning enough money on their own for that fancy armor then it's not much help to do it for them.
What happens when you do a mission for a newbie in your guild that just cannot complete it by themselves? They end up left in a harder area of the game and they still don't have the talents to cope with it. They are then online the next evening asking for more runs from you. I think it's much better to teach them how to finish themselves. If their only response is "but it's tooo hard!!! Wahhh!!!", then they aren't worth wasting much time on.

I don't give new players free items. I am willing to help them out with stuff they are stuck at, but simply giving things away just because you wanna be nice is kind of a backfiring favor. If people don't earn their things by themselves they won't appreciate it as much.
Smurf Minions
I tend to help people and guildies sometimes, but I won't help people who haven't tried it first and just 24/7 asking for help. But it all depends on how much time I have and how the other person is. And as the most have, I too had some helped some people that just kept asking me for help or items.

I have helped others before, made a few good friends.
There are those few that once helped, they then will beg for gold, materials and weapons, with no offer of payment or trade. They don't want help with missions/quests etc. They just want things :/

Yep, I give stuff away all the time (to friends and guildies, never to strangers), even weapons/mods/money I am sure I'm gonna have need for sometime in the future to enrich my gameplay. But so what? My friend needs it right now, eh?
And I can trust them not to PM me everyday of the week if they need something else or want help with a mission they're clearly not ready for, or sell the stuff I gave away for free as soon as I turn my back.
I gave up helping new guys when all of 'em came back screaming for more and had the nerve to go mad at me when I didnt want to give them gold for free or an easy run through a beginners mission. :-)

sometime give greens to new players lvl10 and under in newbie areas but only if they not tagged. new players with a tag are almost certainly not new and/or should be getting help from thier guild tbh

You're also more likely to run into the eejits when PUGging, since the eejits tend not to chat in town unless they're trying to scam. Even then, the majority of PUGs I've been in have been decent (not always successful, but I'm sure everyone will agree that not every failed PUG is due to someone being an eejit) but those that are do stick in the mind. (The most recent one being a Hard Mode Grand Court group that insisted on killing the Blaspheme whenever he popped and kept letting rifts reopen, and wouldn't listen when I tried to get them to reorder priorities. One of the few times I've abandoned a PUG... and then proceeded to get the Masters by hero/henching it.)

If someone politely asks for 1k or that, and I see they are a low level toon, with crappy armor, I usually give them 10k or so, and some greens I have lying around they can sell or use for themselves. It works for me, because I need storage space, and I can't be bothered standing around Lions Arch all day trying to sell a green mesmer want.

I do on the other hand give away free items to alliance members or people on my friends list if they need it. Mostly tomes and greens cause I have more then I can ever use. I never give away gold though, just items.
I don't give away items to people who are spamming, ever. I'll give them a fair deal, but not for free. I gave away a victo's axe back in the day to someone spamming when TopK had just been switched, I changed districts at drok's and the guy was spamming WTS victo's axe. That ticked me off.
