no click to move in GW2

If they're going to do away with click-to-move and add additional movement mechanics like jumping, crouching, swimming, etc., I think they need to take a look at 3rd-person console action games (i.e., Devil May Cry) for implementation examples. Then again, those games also get 8-way/analog joysticks to control with, so it may not be directly applicable.

I don't see how they avoid the problem of moving all of the workload to the left hand though. Maybe we end up buying dual G13 pads to keyboard on both hands?

GW2 wont have C2M, guaranteed. I'm just stating it doesn't make sense in an RPG/Free-float game to have WASD movement.

I use the keyboard and mouse to move; and I guess no one got the joke that GW2 isn't coming out.

so far, you could write all the known facts about gw2 on the back of a beer coaster.

years till it comes out anyway, wait and see. they could change their mind.

WoW is the most popular MMO atm. It has no C2M, just WASD. I only know RS to have C2M. IMO C2M is only a must in an RTS.

How so? To be contradictory I'd had to have made two opposing statements. My post lacks the necessary requirements.

let me paraphrase:

"GW2 won't have C2M, because it doesn't make sense in an RPG to have WASD"

might not be contradictary, but you did say that BOTH C2M and WASD. since C2M and WASD are the only control schemes available, you've essentially said that GW2 won't have a control scheme at all.

Mmmm that's not what I meant. I was stating two facts that don't have a whole lot in common with each other:

-GW2 wont have C2M. I'll bet my life on it! I said this because some people think GW2 might still get C2M. I am saying 'nope', it most definitely wont.

-I, personally, in my own opinion, think WASD is silly for RPG/Free-float games in general. Basically, I think the movement system in GW2 is going to be silly, like WAR's or WoW's.

I'm sorry I must have lost bits of my memory in which an official statement made by develoers stated your "fact". Please provide a link supporting your statement. If you cannot complete this request please refrein from posting your gueses making them sound as f you know more then we do. Thank you -_-

It comes down to the reason Anet is deciding on getting rid of C2M for GW2, which is briefly touched on in the PCGamer article - again, I quote:

Quote:
'Click to move' will be abandoned in favor of a more freedom-rich control scheme, including 'jumping, swimming, and sliding'
What I gather from that is they want the player to have a more realistic-feeling control of the character and take advantage of the z-axis that simply clicking the ground and watching your avatar walk around obstacles automatically doesn't allow. Now, I honestly feel that it could include both styles as GW does now even with this new control scheme, but I'm sure there will be areas that C2M couldn't work at all - for instance, while swimming.

Actually, Perfect World is a free MMO that includes both C2M and WASD control, just like GW is now, and has jumping, flying and swimming with a full z-axis. It's definitely possible. Not sure why they'd want to dump it. Options are always good, IMO.

Assuming they're going to have monsters that walk around the map, which seems like a safe assumption, they're going to need to implement algorithms for picking paths from point A to B.

If the know-how is in the game anyway, why not allow players to make use of it? Click-to-move in a game with complex 3D movement can still work. Player stands at point A, clicks at point B. Is there an unimpeded path? Click-to Move works. No unimpeded path? Click-to-move won't activate and there's some kind of warning, be it a sound or a cursor shape/animation.

Not only has an official statement been made by the developers on multiple occasions, but when it was first made many players including myself already spoke to the devs about it and asked lots of questions and bugged them for a specific reason. They officially said it wont be in GW2, that could change, because anything can change during development, but don't hold your breath.

i dont know why they would change the control scheme so much from a game to its sequel, part of the reason i like GW is because i can click around to move rather than be all clunky with the WASD, also its a known fact that people who don't click to move have a disadvantage, something that I'm not looking forward to having forced on me.

It makes no sense to not be able to point and click where you want to go...what could possibly be more important that they just need the mouse for something other than moving.

It's almost like Anet are saying they're incapable of having both control schemes implemented.

^--- Oooh, a challenge to their coders.

I use CTM in towns mostly, along with ALT for finding NPC's/Xunlai.
In PvE I use the autorun button "R" with the rightmousebutton and Q+E. I sidestep a lot when fighting with a caster or ranger. I find clicking to move in combat to be bothersome, I always click on the wrong spot and run in the wrong direction. Only when the game gets laggy do I use the mouse in PvE.

But since I use both really, I hope both options stay in GW2. You can always set your keys the way you want to, so why take away something a lot of people use? As long as you can bind your own keys, what does it matter if both stay in?

The part that boggles my mind is the statement it self.

'Click to move' will be abandoned in favor of a more freedom-rich control scheme, including 'jumping, swimming, and sliding'

Jumping, swimming, sliding, flying, whatever other stamp you wish to add has absolutely nothing to do with rich control scheme, freedom or abilities are different from offering a good control scheme, added design or vision on what they wish to include to make the game have a more open and less restrictive feel has absolutely nothing do with the actual execution of said features and again, can't see the above being any good with only keyboard input. Furthermore because said features are being added its as if they are saying in order for us to include the above you will actually be getting a bogged down version of movement hence lack of Click to move.

it's more likely to be a limitation of the UT3.0 engine that they'll use. as far as i can tell, click to move in UT3.0 is entirely absent, or very limited.

Wait, Guild Wars 2 using the Unreal Tournament engine? As opposed to say... the proprietary Guild wars engine? Rethink this.

i don't really have a quote or anything, but i do recall Anet licensing the UT3.0 engine sometimes last year. there was a big thread about it here on guru. everyone figured that, since GW2 is the only product anet is making, the engine must be used for GW2.

Where did such a rumor start? ArenaNET isn't licensing any game engine, let alone the terrible UT3 Engine.

If there was no "click move" i would not be playing Guild Wars now. Like most women I could not play with keys. So I did not play a lot games even if I wanted. Now I become so much better and I move mostely with keys. Bust still use clicks from time to time.
So I think without click-move they will lose some clients. And I will miss it.

my mistake. NCsoft bought licenses for UT3 engine, not anet. damn memory, i dun haz dem.

anyways... if GW2 will have all those new movement abilities (swimming, jumping, sliding etc), i think the gameplay will be more similar to a 3D fighting game than a standard rpg. currently, GW1 has always played rather similar to starcraft and other RTS games. together with the "emergent complexity" thing they talked about way back in '07, this might make GW2 play dramatically different than GW1.

don't know if this is a good thing though. we'll have to wait and see.

Hmm.. Yes indeed i do recal somethgin long the lines as well.. something about purchasin..it might have been NcSoft.. not Anet.. i remember comotion going on on Guru about it a while back.. a year or so.. probably more..but yes i doubt GW will be with UT3.0

Edit: oh you corrected yourself already =)

I think you were thinking of the Umbra occlusion software that ArenaNet licensed in October. It's just optimization though not an engine.
