I noticed that ANet has scaled my entry down to a size where you can't really see any details ... if anybody liked the Gwen puppet show (#5) then high resolution versions can be found on the project page for another week or so before I close it down (say hello to Jeremy the bear as well if you visit the site).

Now that I have more than enough Gwen-chan puppets I wonder what I should make next

Congratulations to all the winnners! Especially the ones at Nolani Academy. It is really neat to see your names in lights.

Thanks also for everyone's help at Nolani's academy. My piece didn't make it this year either but I still enjoy it and enjoyed making it, which is really what it should be all about anyhow.

I agree with you. Combined with the fact that the Halloween contest had winners that didn't even follow the rules and I've lost faith in ANet contests at this point. Oh well, who cares.

Glad to see people from here won because they deserved it.

Some amazing winners this year! wowow.

As always though, I feel bad for those that made fantastic entries and didn't land a spot on the website. stouda01, Minami, Tenebrae, Sephios, Chyminy Riquet and zidane888 your work is amazing in my opinion.

Dzjudz, your entry reminds me of an adventure game from the 90s

the 2 winners that made me laugh were:

Tanja - Germany: thats not divinity's reach. it's de_chateau!!! if you look carefully, you can see someone already planted the bomb.

Matthew J. - Canada: the female derv and mesmer was pretty kinky. i was hoping it was a woman that drew it, and that she'd leave her phone number, alas, another day.

That's highly subjective...nothing clear about it. I would have put the grand-prize winner in the bottom half of the ones Anet posted. I thought this one was the best out of those that won:

honestly, my favourite entry was
http://www.guildwars.com/events/cont...9/mention6.php

maybe im biased because im canadian, maybe im biased because at my high school in grade 12 art we make huge murals that I,
if this was made to scale with our murals, I would just... die.
its still my favourite

originally i was going to enter, I started drawing up some ideas (most in my head), but never got around to completing it.
idea:
new dwayna and grenth costumes but with T.T faces, where whos taking their glory?
Ol' Saint 'Nicholas' () and his trust 'reindeer' ()

I have to say I disagree strongly with many of the winners. In particular, I think the 1st place winner was far outshined by the 2nd place winner. That costume was REALLY good.

I also can't stand how almost every chosen entry was a computer generated image. Are the judges biased against hand drawn entries? Congrats to the painting and the one hand drawn entry that won honorable mention, but other than that I don't particularly care for the other winners.

Ahahahahahha that was GREAT ! . I know that costumes , real hand made clothes and so one are good to see but i always like some works that make ppl laugh about it like "hey , it looks like Liu Kang vs Kano" or yours in Street Fighter mode.

It was like a bet with my friend , we were having some drinks and he went :
- Hey , you said you liked snowball fights
me : ye
- Bet you cant do some picture of Dwayna vs Grenth Mk style
me : oh rly ?

there it goes .

Aww awesome, but maybe they were being careful because the logos you've made (which may i add are awesome) look too similar to the originals - is there legal problems with this or would it actually be allowed?

Congratulations to the winners and honorable mentions on very creative entries. From what I see, I think that Anet is judging also on the genre - trying to select the best of each - then placing them in the final according to quality.

I would also like to congratulate everyone who entered for your hard work and willingness to submit to judging. Many of us have good ideas, but never finish the project or are afraid of the blow to our ego if we don't place. You not only need talent, but courage.

Personally, I don't think it was the logos that were the issue (I believe that this would count as a parody and hence it's covered under US fair use laws). Rather, the fact that the images used weren't the highest quality, and in some spots are terribly pixelated, was probably an issue.

Bigger isn't always better, and never, ever scale something larger unless you plan on spending a lot of time retouching it so that it's not obvious that you did so.

The pillow that won looks like they bought it at a store and took a picture of it. It has nothing to do with GW besides the fact that there's a polar bear on it and that could be anything. I can pretty much guarantee the person didn't make that but just bought it. That's retarded. This is an art contest not a go to a store and see a pillow with a bear on it, buy it, and take a picture of it contest.

I wonder if Anet even got my submission Not getting a confirmation email and some of the selected winners (not even speaking of the response my picture got from friends and strangers alike) makes me worry.
It's so weird to see people I don't even know loving my picture, some even using it as their desktop background, but still not place.
Wonder how the voting process goes?
Yeah I am sad, and don't understand it, but on the other hand it means a lot to me that other people like it so much (thank you ), plus... I had fun drawing it. It was my first ever "serious" hand drawn picture
I just wanted a reindeer tonic so bad... I love reindeer >_<

This has been a frustration for me also Minami.

As for the voting process, God knows. The only common denominator among almost all the art works is that they involve characters created by Arenanet. You dutifully put Grenth and Dwayna in yours so I can't quite understand why it wasn't a contender. I, on the other hand, tend to use my own characters since I can't find my muse in Arenanet's and I pay the price for that. Also, it doesn't hurt to paint something that Arenanet is actively selling, like the Grenth costume, as the first place winner cleverly surmised.

I'm sorry if you don't like it, but my little sister, who got it for Christmas, absolutely loves it and that's all that counts to me.

I didn't at all mean that I didn't like it. It's a lovely pillow, sure. It just didn't look handmade to me and the fact that there was only the one picture of the completed pillow on the GW site made it even more seem that it was just bought. But I admit when I'm wrong and I guess I was this time. Did you make the polar bear?

Thanks that's okay. I'm kind of a perfectionist when it comes to pictures or in this case to handicrafts. Usually I'm not showing unready stuff except to my family but I think this is the best way to prove that it's hand-made. Yes I made this one

Gratz to all the winners, and I agree that some of the winners/HMs were poorly chosen - in comparison to other works of art I know were submitted.

I asked Regina a few days ago about how they decide a winner, and she said the Anet staff has a look at the entries, and then vote. So I'm not so sure genres have anything to do with it. There's no "panel of qualified judges" per say, it seems to be decided on popularity alone. You could perhaps then believe that works which are immediately eye-catching (sexy, attractive, polished) and/or impressive (epic, surprising, original) have a higher chance of winning. This is just an assumption.

The judges from the contest at Anet can't vote objectively, because not everyone got the same likes and dislikes. That's why entries deemed winners in this thread didn't qualify, and some contest winners are disliked.

That's just the way it is.
