I think I can see much better what's going on when you draw stickmen instead of this.

See? Now you have the sketch done, you can't stop there!

(I'll understand if you don't have time to draw or finish it, just really curious to see what you'd come up with)

lol I actually might finish it at some point but not sure yet if I could make it to the workshop.

Speaking of things that need to get finished

This is what I decided to finish for now. I got this sketch lying around. It was supposed to be a second drawing for a guildie's bday (had a second idea when i was in the middle of this one http://roguemina.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d330jxa ) :

Now it has become a face study thing. I am using no references but I look at a book on anatomy and apply it in the drawing. As of last night, I was working on Mina's nose so there's still a lot of possible changes that can occur.

These characters tend to argue/fight a lot. Hence the pic.

And the less fierce looking Tzu sketch. I spent quite a bit of time figuring out what was wrong....I forgot the eyebrows at first!

Raven maybe its just me, but in the arguing one I see her as as kind of affectionately laughing at him, I guess because she is looking up under her lashes, if she was aggressive I would expect her chin to be up. and well, if she is laughing maybe the corners of her mouth could be tilted slightly. Does that make any sense?

Oh and the Tzu skecth is very nice, now she has 3 gorgeous pics ^^

I still haven't decided on her facial expression actually. Mina likes mocking him a lot, calling him a child and immature at times (yeah she can be a real b*tch if she wants to) that's why she's kinda grinning to imply that she wasn't threatened. Then there's another look that she can be glaring at him or something (which is what I had initially as well). So yeah we'll see how it goes towards the end. lol.

If I get some freetime this weekend, I'll see if I can upload a simple sheet on facial expressions we got from my anatomy class. Might be helpful for you.

I'm pretty good at expressions, but only if I'm doing something cartoonish. Doing realistic expressions still eludes me...

@Ravenhawk: I really like the pic of them arguing! Lovely smooth shading, and it looks a touch more realistic than what you normally do.
The one thing that bothers me is that they both have rather small noses... for such a realistic drawing, their noses look like something out of manga. Perhaps make them slightly bigger? As it is, their chins look huge because there is no larger nose to balance it out.

Thanks Perynne! I made some fixes on the lips, chin and neck last night. Although I think the nose may still be a little small like you pointed out. lol. Tried to work a little on my mesmer's hands and dagger as well...added sleeves of her Rogue armor.

I haven't really worked on the ranger's face yet though. And yes he's a vamp too. Not sparkly though lol.

Also might stick with her grinning because that's a lot more like her personality. It would especially fit the tentative title I have for it : "Come Closer" ^^

Seems more balanced to me now. I think it may just have been the chin. Not sure if its just me because I'm really tired, but looks like the arm of your mesmer is coming out of her face? Hell maybe thats not an arm at all
Overall though she looks much better ^^

lol thanks Frost. yeah not sure what to do with her hand yet..I am having a hard time figuring it out lol. She's supposed to be holding the dagger an angle or something..I might need to take a picture of myself doing the same pose. X_x

Maybe this will help? Shes holding the dagger differently, but this would be the arm placement I'd find most natural for the pose. Elbow pointed down slightly more than this and the hand raised to reach his neck.

ooh, looks good! I originally thought they were doing the dangerous flirty thing though D: You know, like in action movies where the girl threatens the guy and then suddenly they're making out -___-

[email protected] guys! Well one of our guildies did call them the best non-couple couple. They do flirt sometimes to gain some advantage in their duels but it doesn't end up in a make out session =P lol Murke's character is having a hard time playing referee for those two. The only one who can successfully prevent them from biting each other's necks off is Samael's father (Vale) who is one of Mina's closest friends.

Yeah we got some pretty crazy characters >_>

@Frost --ooh nice image. I can play around with the angle of the arm I guess. Thanks!

Well, as I mentioned, I don't really have time (or the will) to concentrate on a full drawing before Christmas now that my vacation is nearing. So decided to practice on speed painting. I got several fanart requests and currently working on those at a random basis.

These average about four hours I think. I might refine the Bayonetta one because I like how it turned out overall (plus, I like dark haired female chars with eyeglasses. Probably because I am one myself) and I can't stand those chains..it still bothers me lol but speed painting is speed painting XD.

There might be errors one the faces because I didn't use references for the poses/angle.

Samus Aran (Metroid), Chun Li (Street Fighter) and Bayonetta (done in that order)

I know I'm about a week late, but I'll get the facial expressions posted sometime tomorrow. My last final is next morning and then I'm on break.

Sure Charlie! I will be on vacation next week so I probably wont be able to see it until after Christmas. Thank you

And sort of a pre-vacation parting gift for everyone, I decided to finish the Bayonetta drawing:

Back from vacation. Did a few sketches and just got one that I really like. I had one for Perynne's sin too but not sure if I like it yet. So I guess I'll be working on Eek's mesmer first (Art Trade).

Here's the initial sketch and I am about to render it digitally after this. Still got a lot to fix..esp the nose and her left hand. Uhm..I saw the pose from a magazine ad and I think I am just gonna put some sparkly mesmer magical stuff on her left hand >_> ...that or a mirror?

welcome back from your vacay, Raven

She's looking great! Did you sketch on paper and then color on photoshop? I've noticed there are a lot of people that do that (I'm guessing people prefer to sketch on paper than on the tablet??), but my scans come out so badly for me to do it D:

I still need to get started on your dA workshop... I think I've finally narrowed down a pose to do

Thanks Thistle *hug* Glad you're joining the workshop. I'll be sending a reminder tom XD

I sketched it on paper first. I brought my sketchpad during my vacation and doodled. I decided not to shade it because I knew I would rather render it digitally.

I don't worry too much about my scans in this case Thistle because I paint over the original sketch anyway. :P

My Rogue drawing also started as a traditional sketch too:
http://roguemina.deviantart.com/art/Rogue-WIP-174890045
http://roguemina.deviantart.com/art/...n-Up-174982069

And here's another one of my doodles from my vacation. It's actually my necro but I changed her hairstyle and drew her according to my imagination. She's my mesmer's real mom. I gave up trying to fix the errors that I see because I am close to destroying the paper because I keep on erasing stuff lol. Might color it later on digitally depending on my mood

And here's what I have in mind for Perynne's sin. Not sure if I will go with it yet..We'll see! I need to focus on one drawing at a time *is all over the place*

<3 happy new year raven!
Looking forward to seeing you progress I think the only quirky thing I notice in your works is the anatomy from time to time, which you've already said you're working on...sooooo....*cheers raven on*
maybe try to do a few more speed paints inbetween requests and monthly projects? Dont kill yourself :P after all, we'll still be sitting here eagerly anticipating your next art work
side note: cannot wait to see storm!!! (she and rogue are my fave xmen characters)
edit:spell fail fix lol

Unfortunately I don't have a female version of expressions. Though I'd suggest really analyzing how the muscles in the face change according to that sheet. Get those down properly, and you'll be able to transfer them over to a female face easily.

Charlie - Gotcha

Oh and yeah I seem so slow since I came back on vacation. This is all I have so far for my big project. It's not an art block but more like...I don't stop working on the face until I am completely satisfied with it. And this is only the rough sketch part....

The perfectionism paid off. :3 I struggle more with faces and hands than anything else, and it seems you've got them down. XD I admired (stared) at the faces for a few seconds thinking "ffffffff, really, really reeeaaallly love the way Raven draws faces" before reading what you'd said about it. =P

ooh, can't wait to see the final piece! Right now it reminds me of sitting in a nightclub about to watch a show - Mina waving to someone she knows while holding a drink and then you get the guy in the back coming in late trying to find a seat at any table...

@Verene
I don't think the requestor specified anyone in particular. I just defaulted to Altair because I have that game (never finished it though. Got bored with the repetitive assassination quests though I heard they fixed that in the sequel).

I can make it Ezio since he seems to be more favored based on all the Assassin Creed fanart that sprouted all over DA recently.lol

@Drelias
Thank you! lol yeah my perfectionist side is gonna show in these monthly pieces that I am planning this year..but I got to be careful not to take the entire year to finish one thing. I think I just need to get back on track...looks like playing WoW got me a bit out of the loop. I finished Eeks' art trade faster than I expected and that was before I returned to WoW.

I don't see the other monthly pieces to be this complicated though. It was initially a one character idea that became four and then I saw a good pose reference pic that has six characters in it. Next time I might stick to one or two characters. *crosses fingers*

@Thistle - Close but not quite .Good guess though but you'll see!

I never finished the first one either, because it was so repetitive. The second and Brotherhood are among my favorite games ever, though, they fixed everything wrong from the first and they're just amazing. I highly recommend them

still slow but considerable updates. I should stop playing WoW lol
It's actually a spin off of a still photo of a tv show pic. Thistle, I think it's obvious now what they are doing lol
