Planned Outage - August 11, 2010 The planned move of the Guild Wars live database for Tuesday, August 10th, has been postponed to Wednesday August 11th, 2010. This was done to ensure that the process meets our high standards for quality. On Wednesday, August 11th, we will be moving the Guild Wars live database to a new data center. This will require a temporary interruption in service beginning at 12:01AM Pacific time on that date. Service may be suspended for up to 24 hours, although we will do everything we can to expedite the process. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding during this rare interruption! |

It's codex zquest day, perfect timing... and now it's moved.

Your new server is unstable and lags out just about everyone going into obs mode.

Regina, this maybe asking a little much but can we get a little more information as to whats going on? We as consumers and loyal users of Guild Wars would love to be informed and know what they can do to help. Dropping one line on guru changes ideals on people in charge. If you think you are losing valuable time by talking here you might want to rethink your career choices. You'd be surprised with the community response for info.
Phaern Majes
It's pretty obvious from the other thread they aren't answering that question. Several people have asked and they have consistently ignored it for whatever reason. But I do recall when they did that mass banning they stated something to the effect of "we couldn't talk about it because we didn't want to give all the people modding warning of what was coming." It might be something similar. Maybe the new servers will offer better security, maybe its lower rent, maybe we're being downgraded, maybe upgraded, maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe. Why don't we all just give a couple days and see whats up?
Zefie
Are they gonna put this update on the login news section of the game? Because I sure dont see it and I know not all gw players read this forum.
Shayne Hawke
Not like it's going to matter if they do. You know that someone is going to end up missing the announcement completely, regardless of where or in how many places it's posted, and there will likely be one slowpoke who makes a thread about it here on Wednesday.
Narcissia
anyone else lagging like mad?
is it from preparation for this?

Thanks for the heads up, Regina. There's no inconvenience, just another day to play tomorrow.
I thought it was pretty clear. They are moving the database to a new data center. What more information do you, the user, need? The service will be out, you know the time and the possible duration, you are as informed as possible. Why are you being hostile to someone who's doing her job? This is a fan site, not the official website.
And people wonder why the staff doesn't post more. *forehead slap*

Phaern does have a point: sometimes Anet has to wait until the action has been completed to address it. That may be the case here, but it's still a very pertinent question to ask (WHY they are moving).
Second statement: there are no official forums, so this is as close as it gets to an official way of having dialogue.
Anon-e-mouse
You missed the other question, what benefit (if any), to the players will the move have?
See the problem is, if it was good news for the players, Anet would be shouting about it. But because they haven't, one can only speculate if the GW1 servers are being downgraded or not.

Good to know, there's no interesting zquest tomorrow while today I would have really missed something

What's the brawl about? It's just another form of maintenance.
Maybe it's a cheaper datacenter, maybe it has better connections, facilities, their coffee is fresh or the climate is more agreeable.

I hope it gets better after the outage.

Time will tell what the situation will bring. Prefer that people prepare a bit longer then rushing that Outage anyways.
It will just be "the day GW stood still".

Is the game down now? I'm unable to log on GW anymore
pinkeyflower
@TheRanger: No, I can still log in and run around.
For anyone interested, I put the IP of HA ID3 (seems to be fairly new because it's not 216.xxx) into an IP locator and it churned out that it was located in Austin, Texas which I think is the same as the old location so they either haven't started or are probably moving across the street.

^my sentiments exactly.

So what will happen at the givin time? Will there be a massive 007 when the plug is pulled or will there be a warning not to do anything big just like the "New build of guildwars" notification in the chat? Cus it will suck if you just opend 100+ z-keys and got disconnected before picking them up because you were unaware of the moving (like for instant your first day playing in some time now with the in game message gone)
Darcy
If you don't read your login messages and get caught in a disconnect, I don't think you can blame ArenaNet. This is the first time they have done something like this, but I don't see what the big deal is. It doesn't matter what the reason is for the move, it's going to happen, so live with it.
@pinkeyflower - the OP was to inform you it is happening tomorrow, not today as originally planned.

A warning is just a bit of service to keep there service and quality high.
If you don't completly readed my post you probaly missed the part were I sayed that the login message is gone and not everyone that plays everyday has seen that message thats been there for only a short time.

I expect alot more people to be unable to play Guild Wars after these server changes.
Since I live in Belgium, I got pretty lucky since the intire western europe (germany, france, belgium, holland) area always got reasonably quality servers. However, for some portuguese, spanish or pretty much every non-western europe/north american country/state the quality was already reasonably doubtable.
I highly suspect alot of people to have even more connection issues after the move-over, cuz let's face it people, Anet is not going to invest into better servers. If anything, they'll try and go as cheap as possible, whilst trying to preserve as much quality as possible.
But with Guild Wars 2 comming closer and closer, and GW1 being next to dead, they really aren't going to put quality over price.

This is what I think. Kudos to all the optimists out there who are anticipating higher ping and more reliable connections, but it's all about the money, and that would probably be a net loss for ANet. I bet they're gonna downgrade us and count on the GW2 hype to drown out complaints. Don't you think they would have added a blurb like "to improve your service" to the announcement if it was otherwise? Hope I'm wrong though .
niek2004
IF they would be UPGRADING the servers to something faster, they would announced it hugely, letting everyone know what's going on. Since they have not done this, the only logical conclusion is that they are DOWNGRADING the servers. Expect more lag, more dc's and more rubber banding.

There are lots of reasons one might do this: Changing bandwidth providers for myriad reasons; keeping bandwidth providers but changing to a data center with more "reasonable" (read: cheaper) co-lo fees; or even just a pissing contest between Anet management and Data Center management.
I'm not one to shy against calling them out on boneheaded decisions, but seriously... Switch to decaf, Chicken Little.
Lord Dagon
gotta disagree RPG's like Fallout 3,Oblivion, and more those 2 just came time mind are acctually really aswome. And wtf u dont have to lvl grind in those games. You can raise your lvl as you want but enemies jsut get better w/ you so theres no real point to haveing to lvl, its just a nice option.
and on topic: yes i think they are gonna downgrade, but im an optimist so im hoping for maybe some super-fantantasic awsome new stuff, and that this "server update" is only a hoax adn we are getting some cool new stuff to play w/ in GW(like chaos armor(really really want that o.0) or amybe some new missions). but yea.. then again it mihgt just be a regular rutine move da server from point A to point B

Yo ANet, login announcement is still MIA. It'd be nice to alert the ppl who don't surf forums or read your network news page.
cosyfiep
yes it would be nice if the log in announcement were still there....or perhaps they could have the message in the chat box like the (now very old) big bot ban message....so that people would know tomorrow there is an outage.
Snograt
They've all misread the thread title, DD - they thought it said "Planned outrage August 11".
