Hurray for cat ears
Moonstalker
I personally loved the facepaint, and use it all the time - It looks amazing with Grenth's regalia dyed white, and some white hair - Don't see why people don't like matching!
And the cat ears, my only complaint is they are kind of small, and hard to notice with some hair styles - but I love them!

To Chicken To Die
Would be nicer with cat whiskers and a little cat nose. But that would have been proppably to much work to ask the dev team.

This years festival hats are obliviously taken from anime. Any comparisons to real life or ghostbusters is a serious stretch.

IMO not a fan of this years "masks". But if others like them, good for them, I just won't use them.
To clarify, however, the cat ears do look pretty fitting on some female chars (and I am not a cat lover).
I do think its kind of obvious the ears aren't from the whole black cat origin…they aren't black, they are missing facepaint & tail, they're named "furr"-ocious…but if people like them more power to them.
I really don't get the goggles...i would have preferred bigger ghost buster esque ones but whatever.
I miss the actual "mask" part of the masks and hope they come back next year. What I really want though is a +1 stacking scar pattern: (

I'd like to change my vote from: these goggles are great to these goggles are RED ENGINE GORED awesome.
These really give off a mad-scientist/Ghostbusters vibe to them. I'm so glad ANet added something like these instead of another hat/mask that covers your whole head. I don't much care for the Asuran spectacles, so these are a definite improvement. I even went ahead and bought some new mix n' match armor to go with the goggles. Thanks again for even more free stuff, Anet. |
Now where is that dirigible when you need it?
Chrisworld
They shoulda made two models for the ears, I'm sorry but they look awful on male characters, but great on female characters.
The goggles are meh, they don't look quite right/rushed into production.

There is a limit to how many traditional Halloween style masks you could do and the limit had pretty much reached.
I don't think they did Devil and Vampire but they did most of the other scary types.
Now we have moved on to Modern Halloween where the kids go out dressed in a variation of costumes.
I think various cultures and the need to sell a range of fancy dress costumes has lead to Spacemen Cowboys and Ballerinas as legitimate costume options.
The Ears will be used to customise characters appearance much as I will use the Lich facemask from the costume pack on some of my Characters.
Role on the next Easter for Bunny ears.
Some of us create exotic backgrounds for out characters and shudder at the use of Toon.

well my sister was a black cat MANY years for halloween---this was waaay back in the '70's LONG before anime hit the usa (unless you count speed racer)....so black cats and witches and pumpkins ARE part of american halloween.....not the goggles....
I am not a fan of either and yes I do watch anime but I do not acquaint the 2 together anymore than I did with the lady who was wearing the cat costume at a party a year or so ago (and no she was NOT anime related more like xxx rated --and no she was not wearing whiskers either on her face).....
I am glad they are still making 'hats' even though they have ceased to be hats many years ago----think I will go an put on my charr mask now------

You know what irritates me. I bought this game in Sept of the year it was released. I owned the game for both the first Halloween and Wintersday celebrations.
Yet I never got those hats. I was so noob, I had no idea about such things really until the first Dragon Festival. I mean I knew about the events, but I wasn't only playing GW, and I didn't know about the one time shot at such hats/items. I just missed out. Oh, am I the only one that mis-read this thread title as "Hurray for cat eaters"? |

And how do those masks 'fit in the game' any more than the ears do? They are all halloween accessories.... :/
I think it all just comes down to opinion. I personally think the scarecrow mask looked/looks incredibly lame on any character, and would take the ears or goggles over it any second. |

I'm the same way, I missed the first two halloweens and wintersday end events. I was around, saw the decorations, had my fun...but I never attended the finales and never got the hats.

Same here. I missed out on several simply because I didnt bother...including the first dragon mask, and the first year Halloween.

The goggles, they do nothing!

No, there's nothing that says you can't like Anime to play GW. But GW is not an anime-based game. Mixing of genres only gets so far before it becomes ridiculous. And when the ears don't fit very much at all in the game, and THEY DON'T, the whole mixing of genres excuse goes out the window. You can claim that it's a halloween staple, but they didn't include the facepaint that is required to pull off a convincing cat costume. You can't dismiss the anime/weeaboo connection completely, just like I can't dismiss the halloween black cat staple completely. But which weighs more? That's the question, and it's at the heart of the complaints about it. If it wasn't an issue, there would be no complaints. The presence of valid complaints makes the argument valid and worthy of serious consideration, instead of just insulting the complainers saying they're "never happy". I was happy with the scarecrow mask when everyone else said it was lame. Same with the Lupine mask. I still have my Lupine mask on my warrior for her werewolf costume. (Primeval warrior armor lupine mask FTMFW. I might even dye the gloves red.)

They likable items I think. If you don't think so well /shrug

If you have been playing guild wars for more than 2 days, you will be painfully aware that no matter what happens in the game, people will complain about it. I challenge you to bring up a single instance of something either being added to the game or being changed in the game in which there were no complaints and no threads formed to rage on the addition/change.
The presence of complaints only indicates the presence of people who have access to keyboards and the internet, nothing else.

I like the ears. I'm not so excited about the goggles. But, I am glad some people enjoy them(I might throw them on my ranger for a while)The fact that they are accessories and not full masks is an improvement, imo. They make it much more likely to find use year round than just events. At least they arent as lame as the 2009 ice crowns. If you think the cat ears make a male warrior look fruity, just throw on a Snow Crystal Crest. I pray to dwayna Anet improves on this years wintersday hats.
As for the cat ears appealing to furries/anime fans. All I gotta say is thats a bonus. The cat ears are halloween related and if it apppeals to a few other genres all the better. Not to mention I seem to recall cat ears, or the like, being requested in years past.
EDIT:
O.O I want a Devil Horns now! Brilliant idea.
I dont think it has anything to do with competence. It has more to do with sales of the new costumes. If the free halloween costumes were just as good as the ones you buy. What would be the incentive to buy the costumes?

Hello, and welcome to the internet. There is no known correlation between the presence of complaints and a logical reason for complaints.

The hypocrisy is already strong in THIS thread because most of the supporters of the cat ears have claimed that they're "cute" and they'll be wearing them on their characters full-time. Now, how ridiculous would you feel if you wore your Halloween Costume year-round? I don't think this is what they have in mind. They plan on making their characters resemble Anime cat-girls/boys and it has nothing to do with a "halloween costume" as they claim to defend their relevance to GW or Halloween.

These are my favorite halloween masks so far. They are a ton more usable than the other ones and they are free too. Sometimes simple is better.
I don't see what the fuss is or why people don't like them.

It doesn't matter how much time or effort went into them. These "masks" are infinitely more useful than all of the others because they can actually be worn as accessories rather than a silly mask no one wears for more than 2 days after halloween.
As far as I'm concerned, these 2 masks are the only lasting masks besides the pumpkin crown and freezie crown. |

The goggles can be used whenever and are kinda cool. Anyone should be able to see that.

They don't expand on anything the tinted spectacles didn't already cover, both undyeable so unless you have a love for the color grey. I don't see a playerbase larger than the ones already wearing tinted spectacles to use them for long.

The Kitty Ears & Goggles are... alright...
My only problem is that they don't look great on my female Necromancer. To certain looks, certain hairstyles and certain classes, yeah, they look downright awesome... but to what I play as, it's rather awful.
That's my problem with these two new "headgears": They're not universally eye pleasing to every character. I mean, can anyone really say a Male Monk looks good with kitty ears?

The goggles are barely noticeable and just don't go well with anything. I've worn the skull face paint non stop on one of my characters.

Anyone who thinks cat girls/boys should automatically be related to anime needs to take a look at Ancient Egyptian mythology.

Every year, and for every event, there are some that like the hats and some that don't (I despise the scarecrow crap). Let the people that like them enjoy them. Who CARES why they like them. If they like them, great. If you like them, use them. if not, don't use them...it's always been this way for EVERY event. :/

Googles look great with ranger armor, and with the shinning blade suit.
Cat ears work great with mesmer armor, and with the Lunatic suit.

You're free to do so...not liking them because of how they look makes sense. Hell I think the Scarecrow/Warewolf masks look incredibly stupid. xD What I don't undersand is hating on them BECAUSE they assume an anime connection to them. Just seems like nitpicking to me. :/

Cat ears have been suggested countless times. It doesn't matter what's their inspiration, people wanted them.
And, by the way, some of the Live team members are anime fans. At least so they say their user pages in the wiki.

If those were supposed to be mad scientist goggles then there's alot of room for improvement.
I also dont remember any mad scientist movies with goggles like that or would even be an important enough figure to associate with halloween.

And it's not embarrassing for everybody. People who are embarrassed that something might, based on pure speculation, have been inspired by a particular fandom must be really insecure. Would they be worried about being mistaken for a fan of something they're not really a fan of or something? And if so, why do they care so much what other people think?
Some people like stuff. Other people don't. More news at 11.

Also, it's not uncommon for the mad scientist theme to be assocciated with Halloween, Frakenstein for example (albeit it's more the monster he created, but he still counts simply by the fact he creates Frakenstein)

This place is really the #1 spot of GW complaining on the Internet these days, damn.
I'll just tag along for the ride for now because I have time to kill and tick down whatever comes to mind.
Spoilered for wall of text.
I know, you hate walls of text. So there's a tl;dr below it.
tl;dr: It's Halloween. EVERYTHING IS RELATED AS LONG AS YOU CAN DRESS UP AS IT! YES, EVEN A TOILET SEAT COVER!
I BET YOU'LL BE THE GREATEST TRICK-OR-TREATING TOILET SEAT COVER IN HISTORY!
So. Please. Stop. Whining.
And thanks for all the fish.
P.S.
Vampires wouldn't work if they only give teeth. It's -way- too small to notice.
Be prepared for facepaint or a mask made of papier-mâché.
