Wintersday Workshop 2010
Death By An Arrow
Its ok, im not nearly done either. LOL
i havent bothered to look through magazines lately. But my holiday break starts this weekend (early dismissal friday) so I'll have much more time to finish it for the official contest xD
To prevent a double post I'm adding this here.
@Tommy, so I was looking at your progress yesterday and ment to post this for you. I think I can see what's "up" with your monk. While the work you did on her is actually really good, the proportions of her body were a bit off.
The most important parts of this are the legs and the waist. Both legs are the same width as the hips.. which i don't believe is possible :P Id suggest making her legs thinner, it should look better then.

The baked polymer clay jewels again, and the round wooden beads strung up with medallions added. Working on putting the clay jewels on leather strips and attaching them to the wooden bead circle.
I wish I could've found bigger medals for it, but had to make do with the smaller size.

Part of the problem is you have the fur trim on the inner leg also. But the wiki pics of the armor show it only on the outer side and the bottom. http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Galle...onk_Norn_armor
You also still need a darker area for the back of her knee. When you have your leg bent like that it creates a crease in the cloth that is deeply shadowed even in bright light.

Woah Tommy you're getting alot of attention...and the stones are darker now! <3 Though they don't look 3D :P i don't think you worked on them yet? Otherwise it's awesome

I do agree that it needs a much darker crease for the back of the knee, to show that the knee is properly bent. Also, I think the pants need a crease to show where her bottom would be, just so the shape of the body underneath is what gives the shape of the pants as well.
Removing the inner trim and perhaps widening the red area of the pants to be closer to each other between the legs might help as well.
Example:
@Magik: Wow, she looks so beautiful! I don't have any comments to add to that, I just keep gawking at the level of detail and prettiness. Very nice!
@Spark Addiction: You can make a free progress gallery at photobucket.com, or then register at deviantart.com for another free gallery. Having a progress gallery makes it easier for the judges to find your work for final judging. Instead of saying "No, I don't know how to do that so I won't do it" why not say "No, I don't know how to do that, will you please help me out?"
We are here to help out, the whole point of this Workshop is for people to learn new things and to get comments/critique/praise for their work.
EDIT:
To avoid double posting... I did some work on my entry last night. Worked on the background and did some small details on her dress. I still need to tweak the snow and some background details, but it's going in the direction I want so that's good.

Thank you for all the tips and comments.
I'll try to go by them all. First issue is the proportions Death by an Arrow showed me. One thing I think you foget is that her hair is not part of the proportion, neither is the fur on her legs. So her waist is a little bit less wide then 2 legs, and her head is about half the size you posted (since you've also use the diagonal instead of right-angled on her face. So what I'm trying to say is, I think the proportions are fine
Secondly, it seems people have missed my last link, of forgot about it when Death by an arrow quoted an older one. But here it is again:
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/4173/sneakpeak.jpg
I already made the creaves a bit darker there, I might need to do it some more, though with so much light I want to restrain using too much contrasts. You are right Pery, except for the part that her left butt needs creaves since its a bit more stretched because its going forward. But I definatly need more shadow on her right butt.
And Darcy: ! Lol! I didn't even notice it only had the fur on one side, just assumed it was on both xD Ah well, I must say I like it this way, I guess I'll stick to it. So silly I hadn't noticed.
@ Ninja Monk: Yeah I just dropped in colours so I wouldnt forget. Worked some on them now, but you've mist my last link. I posted it again a little bit above in this post :3

I'm not sure what you mean by other dynamcis
Perynne
Probably this:
I'm still using CS2 so mine has it. Perhaps the newer versions have done away with it completely, by adding some other settings? I don't know, I haven't used anything above CS3....
Perhaps try finding other ways of tweaking your brush? Or then download other people's custom brushes and just forget about the settings. I don't play around with the settings much either, I tend to be pretty satisfied with what brushes I already have.

Ahh that Yes its gone in CS5. I can't remember what the function was. What is it used for? CS5 probably moved in somewhere or made it replaceable.
Perynne
I tried it out, and yeah, CS5 has probably found a better way to implement it. Basically it controls the opacity and flow depending on pen pressure. Like... you can change it yourself how much pressure you need to apply to get a certain opacity/flow. Seems kind of redundant, since you can do a lot of that with the normal opacity/flow sliders.
Tommy's
Perhabs its replaced by the 2 buttons near the opacity and flow?
Dont know, don't understand the function of it anyway.

Uhhhhhhhhh???
@Perynne: I don't even have Photoshop at all, so don't feel bad XD
All I have are some pencils and paper haha.
@Minami: I really love how it's coming along, those beads are nice ^^
I see what you're saying about the bigger medals, but I think that the small ones work just fine as well.
@Magik: Dwayna looks absolutely beautiful, but there is just one thing I am noticing about her that doesn't seem right. Her bottom lip looks really crooked to me, like it doesn't align totally 100% with the top lip. Otherwise I think that it looks great =]
Also, I feel like a noob for asking this, haha, but how do you guys do that "spoiler" thing with the image in it? I still haven't figured that one out.

The skirt for the Ritualist.
Fringes are sewn on, and the colored parts fit onto the bottom edge. They're not fixed to the skirt yet.

Omai Minami when I first saw your pictures, I thought it was rather small, but now I see some feet to compare it with, I now see how big it is. Cool stuff, looks great already. Better be careful now Koreena and Tzu! I smell some rivalry

@Tommy: I'd go with a little darker, but it is looking better with the slightly darker creases. I really like the environment that you chose! It feels very open/bright/wintry, haha.
@Perynne: Wow, I'm really liking it so far; it's a very cheerful piece!
@Minami: I've always hated that Wintersday doesn't exist in Cantha. +1 for the concept, and it's turning out well!

Would anyone here happen to have Norn armor for his/her Elementalist? The pictures on wiki kind of such, I would be happy with some more close up bodyshots if anyone has them ^^ You can see the angle I'd prefer them in in my wip :3 Thnx in advance <3
edit: Oh I was too hasty again, found some better ones on the other wiki. Screenies still welcome though

Does anyone have any advice on how i can make Dwayna look more....feminine? Or send me a decent tut?

Edit: Okay then, i'm remodelling lips and nose and hopefully face...Wait is there anything i havn't changed?

Perhabs its a good idea to repost your image when asking for advice, because I don't really understand the order of new to old that your photobucket is showing me xd
But there is some advice I can give you unconditinally. Something that could define her more as a female are her knees, well legs. I think the legs and knees are a bit bulky at the moment. Making them more fluent and softer, perhabs make those legs a bit longer aswell, would help her look more femenish. But on a note, I don't think she looks non-female Perhabs you can also adjust her arms a bit.
Ok so forgive me but I could not resist. Took your image and started raping it. Hope it helps you a bit :3
I feel stupid for saying fluïd in that image >.>

Argh I didn't get pictures taken still. It took me 6 months to get used to the >+30C summer/fall weather and our house is so not built for going below zero. Trying to keep the gas bill lower this year is being a pain already. I just want to hide in bed where it is warm. But I did manage to make a Giga Pudding hat and got that sent off to my sister.

@Kiya: Buy a hot water bottle, and make a cute GW-themed cover for it? :3 Or one of those weird warmer pillow thingies for shoulders, you can use them to warm stuff up too.
@Morag: LOL XD Who's he going for, Grenth or Dwayna?
@Oh Frustration: Aww... it would've been nice to see something from you. I hope you'll manage to make at least a quick entry. No pressure though, Christmas is stressing enough time as it is.

Death By An Arrow
@Tommy; what i was trying to get at with the proportions was that each leg looks like it's the same width as the waist, to me atleast. I dont exactly know why the face was in there, i realized i didnt need it in the end xD
Try imagining Someone with legs the same width as their waist. And then a really fit/ordinary upperbody. They look in proportion to eachother but not necessarily to her upperbody. If theyre on a different layer you could just adjust the size, I'll try and (poorly) illustrate what I mean.
all i did was scale the waist down so its more proportional to the torso. Personally, I think it looks more natural this way but as a result, shell be shorter and thus in the snow differently.. it shouldnt be a huge problem. Maybe she could be on the broken-off top of the candy cane ladder?
I may have made her legs too small in my example, I originally had it a little bigger but started adjusting it and what not. this is really just for concept.
sorry if this sounds pushy, i just dont think what I ment was understood right ^^'

Started to glue the colored rectangles onto the skirt bottom. Top row is going good, the bottom row is just placed still.
In the top left corner, you can see my sister in total concentration, drawing lines on the polymer clay jewels with a black sharpie pen. ^_^ The headdress jewels are almost done.
Bottom middle of the pic, you can see one long string of jewels, that will be hanging from the skirt.

The belt, cut out from the leather and the buttons placed on it. My mom was working on that so I'm not sure if all the buttons are sewed on yet, but probably not Those were the biggest metals we could find in the store, I think they look very good and I didn't care that it doesn't look exactly like the one in the rit picture. IMHO, it still looks very ritualistic and that's what matters
Funny thing was, that when those metal plates were touching with the wooden beads, it sounded exactly like cows on a field. Imagine the jokes we made xD
You can see the head dress jewels are done, and me and my sister are coloring parts of the bottom of the skirt black after the rectangles have been glued on (there's some black between the colored rectangles) with a Sharpie marker ^_^
We didn't have time to sew on a black material

I put up my progress gallery now; http://wintersdayspiritinhereyes.blogspot.com/
I will be ranting about why I drew as I did more than how I drew it, though I'm gonna try my best to describe how I did it too. Mostly I have a lot of thoughts about what I do rather than actual focus on what I'm dong. I work too fast to cover that part in a good way, which I learned when doing the tutorial video. X_X
Nice job everyone! It's really fun to follow your processes and progresses. ^^

It's sooo hard to make realistic eyes and I can't find any good tutorials on the subject, boo

If you go on obi-quiet's gallery, she has a really good one for noses and lips too...not sure what else she had
Hope i was useful! =o
I have a question: What exactly will your drawing be of? I thought it would just be a very realistic Dwayna holding a present, but now you have her reflection in the eyes =S is it grenth looking at Dwayna?
P.S i apologize if you said it before but i wasn't focusing

Thank you!! It will be useful, though my main issue is the coloured lineless eyes... I just can't colour-blend >_<
I'm supposed to make a pair of female eyes that has Grenth and Dwayna in them, but I'm pondering whether I should change it to just one eye with dwayna in it since the image with two eyes will either be too big to comfortably view the grenth and dwayna pics in the eyes or make the grenth and dwayna too small to see properly... >_<

Pick a soft edge (or hard edge it you want a more painterly look), airbrush would be best, create a palette of the colours you want (in your case, lots of blue), set the opacity at the prefered amount (I normaly use about 20-25%, but if I want sometime really smooth use like 5%) and start blending ^^ And you can do it! I'm sure of it. If you don't exactly understand what I mean, let me know then I can give you some screens of how I do it.
Also found this though images won't show anymore (for me at least) perhabs they do for you: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=47859
As far as your concept goes, I would place Grenth in the eyes. The skin around the eyes is blue so perhabs you like the idea of making Dwayna the owner of those eyes and make her look at grenth? Just a thought :3
@ Morag: D:
@ Death by an Arrow: I don't think you are too pushy, you are just giving your thoughts, something I'm very grateful for the thing is, the stripes you use indicate the pants, not her legs the legs are just inside the red parts, so the legs are a lot thinner then the stripes you give them. I did smallen them a bit, more to make her ass look less big See if you think its better on my next wip, probably somewhat this evening. And again, say anything you want to say about it, I'm happy with all the comments I can get
