Is anyone else worried the game will die completely when GW2 comes out?

Once GW2 comes out, I'm sure a bunch of people will leave GW1 and a favorable lapse in population will occur. After about a month, three things will happen:
- Those who dislike GW2 may return to GW1 just for the hell of it.
- Those who like GW2 may return to GW1 to get other things that may or may not affect the "items obtained" in GW2.
- Those who left GW1 will never return.
Unlike a lot of people, I didn't make a lot of characters and beat the game multiple times in a short amount of time. One of these days, I'll make a Monk and complete all three games + EotN.

The neat thing is that copies of Guild Wars are being purchased every day and I don't think that will change when GW2 comes out. GW is an extremely unique game that people will always be drawn to - but I do think people are going to move away from this game when GW2 comes out. I know I don't have time to commit to two games and play them well, and I'm sure most others are in the same situation.

The only thing i am worried about is the game economics (not the prices, but the fact that there will be no1 to buy stuff that you farmed for except merchant) otherwise, players aren't that important in gw,it has been on its deathbed for a couple of years now but the little rascal is still hanging in there :P

First time I heard about GW2 I was excited. Then time passed, and there was still only talk. No release date, not even release year, just "when it's done". It seems to me that Anet has a policy of "extremely long waiting periods, no deadlines", and to me that's just really unattractive.
I think GW2 is a marketing fiasco, the anticipation and rumors are almost all gone, and people hardly ever talk about it ingame. It wouldn't' matter if they announced GW2 tomorrow, my patience ran dry a long time ago. Guild Wars 1 is a brilliant game, and I've definitely got my moneys worth. Unless GW2 is utterly fantastic (which I doubt after viewing the profession videos), I'll stick with the original.

Take that what you will.
As for on-topic.
I will be moving on, but visit GW1 from time to time. Right now I only play because of the HOM. However, I played a good 3-4 years before getting bored. So it's not like it was time wasted, for me at least.
Also I really got to laugh at all the GW2 hate in here. Come on guys. It's not even out yet. Don't be draggin' it down just because Anet is making something new!

I will probably leave GW1 and only come back when features or places that I liked are missing in GW2 (interruption, hexes, certain missions, etc).
I find the concept of playing through the stories multiple times stupid but I can understand why people do it. Replay value has never held value for me. Do it the first time, hope it's fun, then more onto the next game. Usually low level PvP is my replay value.

There are several populations that play GW1. One is the new players. Yes, there are several new players each day. They will continue to populate GW1. But they are also the most volatile - a large part of the newcomers don't play for more than perhaps a month.
Then there are the veteran players who played many classes and finished all campaigns. Most of them have reached all of their goals and are playing only because they could or they have ingame friendships they don't want to abandon. They probably switch to GW2 as soon as it is available.
A smaller part still has goals, for example titles, or statues in the hom to get. These probably abandon GW1 later. Included in this part are the people whose PC is not able to run GW2 - but one day they are able to upgrade and they will leave.
Then there is the community of speed-clearers and dungeon-runners. They will continue - for a short time. Whenever one of them loses interest, he quits, so this community will dwindle. Perhaps a small closed community will persist. But who wants to do uwsc for years in a row? Probably nobody, because there is nobody who will buy or admire the stuff they get dropped.
Also continue to exist will some of the super-rich boasting players. They cannot leave. They have too much virtual goods and titles accumulated that can't be left behind. They are slaves to themselves. But I doubt they will actually play the game. They will stand around dancing with a collector's edition dancing style and showing their most expensive minipet.
The PvP community will renew itself to a much smaller scale than it exists now. The old players are somewhat bored and are only waiting for a new good PvP playing ground (which is GW2 hopefully), so they leave as soon as it arrives. In the following time of total desolation most of the player's PvP skills are lost, because most of the PvP guilds go inactive. Then, the PvP community will be rebuilt by completely new players, and they will rediscover playing PvP and make their new own meta game. This will be on a much smaller scale and lower quality than the current top guilds, because there are much fewer players. The time of total desolation is required to get rid of the top guilds and top players, who dominate the current pvp scene in a way that almost no new player dares to even enter pvp.
I estimate that 50-70% of all GW1 players leave within the first 3 months after the GW2 release. And they generally will not return, even if GW2 does not please them. They buy new games instead.
Edit: If you ask what I will do: I will leave for GW2 on the day GW2 is released and probably return only once a month for a short time to see if GW1 is still online.

Really will it be worth ANET to keep GW1 around after GW2? I have to think that GW1 will eventually fade away, but gradually.
And why worry about it? GW2 is going to be awesome and you will forget GW1!

TBH I've a pile of plat, horses, houses, mythicals and other garbage in EQ2 and an expansion or two I haven't played. I will go back there before I start playing yet another standard MMO with a few new bells and whistles.

I think GW2 may be another WoW with better graphics.
But if they do implement this dinamic world where a player may start a huge catastrofic event i'll play it. Just to see what Leeroy Jenkins does. I bet he may destroy the human capital

GW2 doesn't look anything like WoW, in any way. The few common MMO elements that it's taking this time around far pre-date WoW.

Nope, I'm not worried....because I'll be playing GW2, so I won't care one way or another.
*obligatory eye-rolling at people who think GW2=WoW*
I seriously think that most of the people who say this have never played WoW, or any traditional MMO, because they're seeing GW incorporate some of the good MMO features of its competitors and they think this is a bad thing. Newsflash: just because a feature is in WoW does not make it bad. WoW does a lot of stuff right, and a lot of stuff wrong. It so happens that, if you list out the stuff that WoW does wrong, they're all things that GW2 is doing differently.
But, hey, I guess because it's a persistent world now with 80 levels, it must be exactly like WoW...with better graphics! >_>

But GW 1 is going to remain my home for years to come.

I will be buying GW2 and trying it out, just like the majority of the community. However, I don't think I will be liking it much: they've already stated they will NOT be allowing the mouse for movement, and I don't have the digital dexterity to use the keyboard.

I'm not really worried. I'm still gonna be playing GW either way. I am not jumping right into GW2 the day of its release. I'm gonna wait a bit until the hype wears down then see if it's worth it or not, and some of my friends are doing the same.

From what has been released, GW2 will have more in common with the traditional MMO than it does with GW. Not saying it is bad, but, there is a reason I play GW still.. and none of the above games.
Wow didnt invent the traditional MMO. UO did. Everquest ran with it. Wow made it Fisher-Price. And now GW2 will add something.. but, at the core, its the same old stuff all over again.

Significant impacts cannot be permanent. Either other players will want to experience an event they missed, or personal stories and important NPCs will have to remain unaffected. In the end you either play in a significant event that will leave no permanent markings on the world, or you play in an insignificant event that has no major bearing on the world at large. Either one spells major disappointment for a great many, I think.
But on to the other subject. I'm not really worried about GW1. The in-game store and I am sure a few proceeds from GW2 will offset the ongoing costs. Anet has been working the last several years to automate many of the recurring events in the game, so that implies they plan on keeping it live for the forseeable future. Most likely we'll see yearly content updates for the anniversary, and other changes to make it more single-player friendly. I expect we'll be here to see the 10th anniversary at least.
Lasai said it best a few posts ago. Not everyone is looking forward to GW2 and will remain in GW1 (such as I). Plus, as had been mentioned, not all will be pleased with GW2 and some of those will return. GW1 will have a long standing dedicated playerbase, much like the MMOs of old, who will keep it going.

I have yet to see something that looks worse than the original. But, of course, until we get to play the game, we won't know for sure.
The new profession system? It takes out the mechanics that have been ruining GW's balance.
Build bars less customisable? The traits compensate for it, they make equally difference, and they are easier to balance while preventing a huge amount of filler skills. Looking at all those warrior's or elementalist's skills in GW1 that are just a copy of other skills with slightly modified stats feels amateur in comparison.
Or the thief, that is such an intelligently upgraded version of the assassin, that makes the sin look boring. Or the guardian, that is the more active/ less passive version of the paragon, aka, everything the paragon should have been. Or the elementalist, that actually has to change strategies mid-battle instead of being a mindless blind-spamming machine or a mindless AoE fire-spamming machine.
Etc, I could go on...

And, on top of all of these holdovers, they're improving so many things: dynamic events that will shape your world, massive PvP battles plus hot-joinable competitive matches, more non-combat activities to encourage players to socialize in towns, a frickin' auction house for once, a personalized story that actually features choices and RPG elements (I maintain that GW1 was a terrible RPG, more akin to FF than FO), the list goes on.
So, I will continue to lambaste people who say that GW2=WoW++, because it's absurd in so many ways. It has some traditional features, yes, but sometimes traditional features are traditional for a reason. It is not, therefore, sufficient to say that something is traditional if you want to say that it's bad.
Every time someone says "I won't play GW2 because it's more like WoW," a kitten gets strangled by a knot of unkempt logic.
@DiogoSilva: First sentence, second paragraph. Watch your use of double negatives.

Why are you worried about this? Chances are good if you still care enough to post on an elite fansite about the game you are playing (or used to play) you got more than your money's worth out of it. I hope this sequel is half as good as all the blind adulation flying around would lead one to believe otherwise it'll be a tremendous letdown.

I really don't feel like abandoning this game, but it's going to be difficult putting up with empty servers when others leave.
Should offline play really be considered by this point?

I've only ever had 8 character slots (the vistas of Assassin, Paragon, and Ranger play are still wiiide open) on only one account, and have only beaten Factions on all characters in the 4 1/2 years I've been playing.
I've also jumped colleges twice and gotten married during those 4 1/2 years, so GW has only sporadically been a priority.
Only recently have I been able to focus on playing for fairly long periods, finish EOTN with one character and getting the rest within striking distance of finishing Prophecies and Nightfall.
I've never been to UW, tried FoW once but got wiped within minutes, haven't finished Nightfall to try DoA.
Made it to the Hall of Heroes in ToPK once, but the siege chaos wurms blew me away.
Obviously, there's still a TON I haven't done in GW1.
I'm also strictly a PvE player, with no use for HoM currently except to display cool armor.
I won't be buying GW2 because I've invested so much time in GW1, and none of the new features (and discarding of old ones) in GW2 impresses me much.
And I don't have the necessary disposable income at the moment.
The last game I bought was the Space Quest Collection.
'Nuff said.

Honestly, I find the game to be rather boring since PvP is death now. As for PvE, I do want to complete that still, but that is solo play anyway. Aside from that, I would probably rather play Guild Wars 2 than Guild Wars, especially in a year or so. Guild Wars has had it's days of glory, now they are over.
That's how life goes, all things come to an end.

I hope they do make it offline playable when the servers are severed. To be able to connect to download full game to install, then play it offline. Make all chapters and expansions available to all of your accounts.

Disillusioned
I remember when I first started playing GW, couple months after it's release, still fresh and new, people were friendly and helpful and thowing a PUG together was relatively straight forward. I finished all 3 compaings on multiple characters, enjoyed every second of it and made more than a few friends in the process.
I've just now come back to the game after a few years off (anniversary email peaked my interest) and spent the last week playing through eoth for the first time, replaying regular missions in HM, new to me, enjoying festival events and a few zaishen m/b/v's which are also new to me.
The one thing that struck me like a slap in the face is the current state of the GW community in-game. It sucks. Spent most of the week PUGing and it was a thoroughly unpleasant experience. Most players have turned into bitter vets after nothing but titles. If your build is less than optimal or not the current FOTM you get ridiculed and laughed at instead of offered advice. And if you have the brass balled nerve of actually making a mistake you get labeled a "f***ing noob" and subsequently kicked from the party. Asking questions in local or party chat has also mostly yielded insults and finger pointing at the state of my noobishness.
Now I understand that GW is an old game and that most players know their way around by now. But for a new player, or a returning player, it's hell.
The alternative is using heroes and henchies but I find playing solo massively boring and in my opinion it defeats the entire purpose of an MMO. There are are dozens of single player RPGs on the market and if playing alone is what I wanted I would follow that route instead.
Browsing around these boards I see much worry over the future of guild wars, with it's dwindling numbers and especially with GW2 on the horizon. One would think that the community would greet new or returning players with open arms to bolster the ranks, but what I've seen so far (in-game) is a bunch of elitist pricks stroking their epeen and making life generally miserable for anyone who hasn't kept up with the million intricacies in GW.
Just posting my 2 cents, perhaps it'll help enlighten some of you as to why GW is an empty game atm, when new players get treated as such repeatedly it's just a matter of time till there's no one left.

I help new people all the time. I don't PUG, however, because people tend to be dicks. I've played with guys who wants to do a PUG but insists on bringing discordway heroes with the group, because that's the best thing in the game. And of course, they're the only ones who can be the best with them. Even to the point of kicking people to do it. I'll grab a couple other people, we'll go out. I'll be a healer and E/Mo or something - if the party wipes 'cause some guy ran out into the middle of nowhere and aggro'd 3-4 groups, it's my fault because I didn't keep the party alive.
I'm a bitter vet in these cases, because I kinda miss the days where people were open to new ideas. When I first started playing it wasn't too difficult to get a group going, and people would always help me and my buddy if I needed it. I'll offer advice, but I don't criticize needlessly. If someone is determined to make a 5 attribute split, all power to them, but I'll suggest improvements.
So I chill out with heroes that don't complain (I wouldn't be playing if there weren't heroes, period), or go with my guild on various things. I'm not gonna go out and VQ NF with just henchmen, though the possibility is there, it's just not worthwhile. And it's hard to get groups consistently together to go VQ and etc. It's usually fine for elite areas, but not just general missions/vq's.
Guild wars is an older game, there's not a lot of new blood coming in. There's a lot of players that've left. There's just not enough people to sustain groups across 4 full campaigns. There's plenty of a community to sustain it with the hero change, but it's as much of a solo game as a multiplayer game. It's not necessarily the MMO it was originally advertised as.

I'm not worried. If GW2 is good, then I'll be playing it and it won't matter to me what happens to GW1. If GW2 is not good, then (hopefully) I'll be playing something else other than GW1.

If you want to see worried, pop over to GW2Guru and look at all the threads of people biting their nails that the game is not going to meet their nigh impossible-to-reach standard of excellence. There's no shortage of people who appear to have already defeated themselves that it's too good to be true and, thus, may find they can't enjoy it for what it is.
Also, there's the maturation period. It's a new game and there will be growing pains, from bugs to economic turbulence to stabilizing a community of people who want to play as others enter only to go back to what they were playing before.
But then there is the most important reason not to be worried: GW2, like GW, is not designed to take over your gaming life. Anet wants you to enjoy the game and not have to give up what you love to play right now.

I'm another who has just started playing GW1 thanks to GW2.
I play wow, have done for a few years, played a LOT, feeling kinda burnt out but no other mmos appealed . . . then happened to read about GW2 and was blown away.
I was already thinking it might be nice to play GW1 for the lore and background, add to that needing a break from wow, and then add to that learning about HoM, and here I am. I see one other person in the thread doing the same, and I'm sure there will be a fair few others.
Although GW2 is a completely different game, the hype about it is getting the Guild Wars name out there and back into people's consciousness. I was vaguely aware there was a game out there called Guild Wars, but hadn't really given it much thought until now (sorry!). Moreover, I imagine this effect will continue for as long as GW2 is a big deal (likely to be a while longer, even if it only remains high on the hype-metre for a few months after release). Honestly, in the short term I would imagine player numbers will actually increase due to the approach of GW2.
And B2P is pretty crucial, especially for people with a lot of time invested in something like wow. To pay a monthly sub for an old game you have no connection to? Nah. But a one-off price? Why not? (especially this cheap - I just ordered all 3 campaigns plus EotN for a grand total of £22 - if I only play for a few weeks it's no big loss)
And even WoW has been dying since TBC at least, if you believe the forums. I wouldn't be digging the grave of GW1 just yet.

OK, every one on here knows what GW1 and GW2 are, but B2P? TBC?

I believe "B2P" would be "buy to play". No idea what "TBC" means - the only thing my mind is coming up with for that is "the big chicken" which I don't quite think is it

I remember when I first started playing GW, couple months after it's release, still fresh and new, people were friendly and helpful and thowing a PUG together was relatively straight forward. I finished all 3 compaings on multiple characters, enjoyed every second of it and made more than a few friends in the process.
Just posting my 2 cents, perhaps it'll help enlighten some of you as to why GW is an empty game atm, when new players get treated as such repeatedly it's just a matter of time till there's no one left. |
As for the single-player/MMO thing. True there are hundreds of SP RPGs out there, but only one Guild Wars. If it hadn't been for the decidedly un-MMO-like henchies and heroes, I certainly wouldn't have been playing the game this long. The great thing about GW was that it bucked the MMO trend and formula. It's too bad that it will probably be the only game of its kind.
