Is anyone else worried the game will die completely when GW2 comes out?
Sapho
Hi! I'm sorry for being unclear.
B2P = buy to play (used commonly on GW2 forums)
TBC = The Burning Crusade (used commonly on wow forums)
I didn't stop to think that they wouldn't be used here. My bad, and thanks to the folks who explained it.
Edit to add: ironically, my character in wow bears a strong resemblance to . . . a big chicken

I believe "B2P" would be "buy to play". No idea what "TBC" means - the only thing my mind is coming up with for that is "the big chicken" which I don't quite think is it

EDIT: Doh! Got beaten to the punch.
Oh, and I might as well give my 2 cents on the original post. I do feel the inevitable death of GW1, but I am looking forward to GW2. I just hope the powers that be either beat the release of Diablo 3 by at least 6 months, or release GW2 about 6 months after Diablo 3.
ServiusTheBear
I do not think it will die. I see people playing both.

First off, I'm not sure if I'm going to get GW2. But for the purpose of discussion let's assume I do.
For me it really depends. Will GW2 have the build variety that GW1 has? Will it have things for PvE as crazy as 55 monks, 600 smite, 330 rit, 105 derv, visage/famine, perma sins, imbagon, cryway, etc? Will it have crazy PvP things like EoE bomb, <insert prof here> ball, IWAY, etc?
From what I've seen of recent demos, it's impossible to say, as with only 45 mins no one wanted to mess around with making different bars and just wanted to get out and kill stuff. We will have to wait and see, but for me, it's all about the making new, faster, more powerful builds to get through things as efficiently as possible. With the periodic game updates, they've kept the meta fresh enough to keep me interested. Though, as the time between updates increases, the less I will probably log in to GW1.

Ofc it will, unless they do some big stunt and make it completely F2P for say all of Prophecies.

I have been gone since September 2009. Can't play GW at all here, so I'll still be playing GW1 again in Sept when I get back home. I'll be glad when GW2 comes out, because they won't be making any more changes that I have to get caught up on to finish playing GW1....P

Should offline play really be considered by this point? |
If, on the other hand, you're just worried about them turning the game off and leaving you high and dry....I doubt it. EQ1 is still going, right? GW1 will always be a bit of a marketing thing for GW2, and vice versa; as long as people see other people wielding cool HoM weapons and titles in GW2, and as long as people are sucked into the GW2 storyline and want to learn more, they'll have new people flowing into GW1.

This may not be a fair comparison, but last year I was looking forward to new versions of two of my favorite games, Fallout New Vegas and Civilization V, but in the end I went back to playing the previous versions of both games. As I was disappointed with both releases for different reasons, last year I decided to try GW and I'm totally addicted!

Given that GW2 is going to be a SIGNIFICANTLY different playing experience, I'm a bit skeptical that I'm going to just fall in love with it out of the gate. I hope I'm wrong.

They have just have handpicked a few skills along the way as you level in GW2. Solo farming is probably gonna be supported, but not in the same manner as GW1 has which I'm pretty happy about.

I might or might not even get GW2. Right now I'm thinking I'll get it just to have the option to play it later. I'm really not that interested in it. The only reason I'd get it sooner rather than later is to register character names while they're still available (if they're available) and for BD presents and the like.
I still have more to do in GW1, like getting Legendary Survivor in pre-Searing Ascalon, and maxing out every title I can on my main post character...

Yeah, but then they become the norm and after a while there's no such thing as normal balanced play (that's good) any more, or at least that's how it seems to be.
To beat everything the game has to ofter you often have to resort to gimmicks to some degree.

No, though this place might die. That'll be more amusing than sad. :P
GW2 will likely be more fun than GW1 was for me, I think.

I wouldn't be so sure. GW2 will be quite different from GW1. I wouldn't be suprised if, after the novelty of GW2 wears off, a few months after launch, we're going to see a bunch of people go back to GW1.
Let's put it this way: there are other games out there that are similar to what GW2 will be, with only some differences in tehnical details. But very few games similar to GW1, or with the same level of polish on what makes it different. And GW2 will still have to prove itself, go through the real-world trial of fire, and it's anybody's guess how that will turn out.
Let me ask you something: if ANet would re-focus on GW1, keep adding campaigns and professions and fixing stuff, would you not keep playing it, GW2 or not? I know I would.
If you want my prediction, and for whatever it's worth: at some point after GW2 launch ANet and NCSoft will have to decide to re-invest resources into GW1. Because it's too good to just let go.
The only problem I see is that it might come down to a business decision: not enough income to keep GW1 servers and maintenance/development team going. Going to a completely new engine because the old one had limitations was a very gutsy move. It might pay off... or it might not.
I just hope both GW1 and GW2 have a place in the future. If either of them were to die because ANet/NCSoft have spread too thin between them, it would be a damn shame.

I think there should still be a semi healthy amount of people after they IKGDFKLGHDFG NEW GAME! hype dies out from people grabbing hom points still. :P

Oh, the population will be be affected detrimentally when GW2 releases. No doubt about that. Honestly, it's for the the better. Guild Wars had it's run, and an amazing one at that, but all good things must come to an end.

Just because some people have been playing this game for 6 years and are sick of it, doesn't mean that others can't still enjoy it. Or that the game has somehow lost its value. It's all in the eyes of the bored beholder. Move on if you feel the need, let the others enjoy.
Besides, there are plenty of ways to inject new life in GW1. I don't wanna discuss them here because this thread is not the place. Suffice to say that some skill tweaks and some content that emphasized (or mandated) PUGs as opposed to H/h would do wonders. (And don't QQ about the quality of PUGs. You can't have it both ways, simultaneously decrying how bad PUGs are AND complaining that H/h killed the game.)

quite simply, I am not done playing GW1. I'm a bit of a completist so I could spend years working at my own pace to complete titles and quests. Like someone else said, I will buy GW2 just to get char names and whatnot, but i'm far from done with GW1.
One thing that will be a drag is those co-operative missions that demand more than one human player for effective completion will be that much harder when people leave. Dzagonur Bastion and The Eternal Grove are two places that come to mind where players will be at a disadvantage without other players around.
I wonder if there will still be holidays and hats given out and such? Nicolas?

It will not die entirely I guess, I hope not. I want to be able to login and be amazed at how fun a game can be. GW2 will be fun I guess but I seriously doubt it will be as fun as gw1 for me.

There will still be events after GW2 is released, yes. There's no reason to believe the Zaishen or Nicholas will pack up shop, either.
As for difficult content, it's why they've expanded to 7 heroes and Embark Beach.

Yes, all good things come to an end, but in many cases, such as Guild Wars, it bridges over to a new experience for those that wish it.
Of course there are ways to inject new life in GW1, that's not the case here. It's just that they won't besides sporadic updates for GW:B. Their live team is very small and only work for new content, not game fixing content.
As for players, yes, you can complain about both. Heroes did, hurt Guild Wars detrimentally. The standard for PUG quality is low as it is, so why bother with the stress of dealing with players that are subpar? The reason why Guild Wars is in this state is a multi-faceted issue. It is impossible to point the finger at only one aspect, doing so would be ignorant.
Now, don't get me wrong, I loved Guild Wars, my 8000+ hours proves that. (Although many of it was just afking, but nonetheless.) But my time in Guild Wars made me aware of what was going on around me in-game. It's about time Guild Wars leaves the stage, it had its run, and it was a long, and overall successful one at that, but it's time for Guild Wars 2.
Laraja
I never thought I'd leave GWs, but I did, although I do check in occassionally just because I do love this game so much. I really am looking forward to GW2.
In the meantime, I am passing the time with Rift, which I have to say is a ton of fun. I figure it'll keep me occupied until GW2. You can't really compare it to GW except to say it's a MMORPG. I've been told it's closer to WoW, which I have never played.
Oh, there's a Rift player with a cleric dwarf by the name of Ogden. I caught it in local chat so I had to ask "Ogden? As in Ogden Stonehealer?" and the player is like "YES! You're the first one to get it." Lol. So it seems there are some GWs players in Rift also waiting for GW2.

Guild Wars has been my "home game" for 5 years. It'll always have a special place in my memories, but I think that when Guild Wars 2 rolls around I'll be more than ready to move on. I've done everything, I've seen the game. I know the lore like the back of my hand. I don't have 50/50 on my HoM, but the titles I'm missing are just the grind titles (Sweet Tooth, Drunkard, Wisdom, etc. etc.) so I'm not missing out on much. I have enough points to get all of the items in Guild Wars 2, and that's plenty for me.
No need to sit and mourn over the empty shell of an old friend when it has been reborn into a new entity.
That sounded a lot deeper than I meant it to. o_O

I honestly am sorta sad that it will end. But I need to move on. I really don't think it will be GW2, tho. I hate it, so far. Okay, I like some things, but the majority, no. Maybe there will come something else, that's even better than GW2.
Ellix Cantero
I'll be playing GW until GW2 runs acceptably well in linux (ie w/ wine).
Ensign
It's not like they're making GW2 to be a real spiritual successor to GW. They are completely different games, right down to the core. I wouldn't be any more worried about GW2 killing GW than Rift killing GW.
ruk1a
No. First, like the above poster said... they are still going to be COMPLETELY different games. Although, I do believe most of the players will move on to GW2 me included, but it'll be kinda like Diablo2 ya know? Always gotta come back and play here and there... I don't think it will ever die out.
