Welcome everyone to the 2011 Wintersday Workshop! Credits for the idea for this workshop goes to our awesome and amazing Tzu (previous host) and, of course, the amazing Nolani Academy of Arts community!
*NEW-01/13/2012*Comprehensive announcements of winners will be here starting at 11:00AM PST on Sunday, January 15th Live announcements will be made during Wintersday Workshop party hosted by Arghore!
The Grand Goal of this Workshop is to encourage all participants to grow as an artist - whether that means you can make a grand masterpiece that rivals the greats or like to dabble in simple sketches! The purpose of this workshop is to encourage artists to put forth their best effort and to help these artists grow, irregardless of art skill level The Workshop has the additional goal of enhancing the feeling of community by providing a fun place where participants can learn how to give and receive constructive criticism. All participants are strongly supported and highly encouraged to submit their art into the official Guild Wars Wintersday Art Contest hosted by Arena Net, however we welcome all artists, irregardless whether you plan on submitting or not.
Please be aware that the nature of the Wintersday Artist Extraordinaire, The Best Progress, and The Smiley Face Awards means that those that are very last minute entries (i.e., day before deadline) will most likely not be considered since these awards are over a period of time during the workshop. However, all other categories do not have that restriction since we don't want to discourage those that discover the workshop close to the end from entering, sharing their pieces, and getting whatever feedback they can get to help them grow as an artist.
Awards and prizes are fluid and are subject to change depending on donations.
*Rough values for prize packages were calculated using argos/Kamadan trading trends mid-Nov and guru PC stickies. Ectos valued at 7.5k and armbraces at 23 ectos.

☆Wintersday Artist Extraordinaire Award☆
This award is given to the artist who meets 3 criteries: was a nominee for the "People's Award", participated actively in this thread (both giving and receiving critique and generally being chatty), AND was a candidate for at least 1 of the other Wintersday Workshop awards.
Winner - Morag D
See this link for the comprehensive award list, prizes, and comments!
Quote:
☆Best Progress Awards☆
These awards are for the artists who have listened intently to critique, mastered the art of personal growth, and made long leaps to better his/her piece regardless of art skill level.
1st Place - Olrun the Blade
2nd Place - Rahtschini
3rd Place - Obastable
See this link for the comprehensive award list, prizes, and comments!

☆The People's Award☆
Ha! You think voting is easy? Well, this award will be based on you - votes from all of the workshop participants so you can all share in the voting fun! Voting is limited to people who have posted in this thread prior to a week before the workshop deadline to make sure voting is fair (no getting friends to vote for your piece last minute :P ). Despite the 1 week rule, all workshop entries are eligible for this prize. Voting will not be open until the end of the workshop. Votes must be sent via PM to me, and I will keep your vote secret. Please don't vote for your own piece. Since you, the workshop participant, are the judge for this award, the workshop judges (aside from me) are also eligible for this award! So, vote for whoever you think wins this award - the one with your favorite art, the one with the most encouraging words, the one who's the friendliest to all, or whatever you want to vote on. This award is yours to give!
See this link if you're curious how voting was decided!
Winner - Death by an Arrow
Runner up - Kiya Koreena
See this link for the comprehensive award list, prizes, and comments!
Quote:
☆The Smiley Face Award☆
This award is given to a person who didn't necessarily enter the thread as an artist - more of a supporter of the thread and the goal. This person kept the thread alive with kind chatter, maybe donated something to the prizes, gave useful critique, submitted tutorials and ideas unselfishly, and generally kept us motivated all the way.
Winner - GeminiJuSa
Runner up - Arghore
See this link for the comprehensive award list, prizes, and comments!
Quote:
☆The Most Epic Award☆
This award goes to the artist who's piece stands out from the rest and make the judges do a double-take, whether that means zooming in on the art to see if they saw what they think they saw, rereading that lit piece that made them go 'say-wha?', or replaying the music/video that made them go 'zounds!'.
Winner - Steelborn
Runner up - Tee Wrex
See this link for the comprehensive award list, prizes, and comments!
Quote:
☆The Campfire Award☆
This award is given to the artist who manages to inspire the Judges and bring warmth and comfort within the cold, dark hearts of the Judges.
Winner - ` Marshmallow
Runner up - Doctor Overlord
See this link for the comprehensive award list, prizes, and comments!

☆The Grentch Steals Wintersday Award☆
Bah humbug! Who needs Wintersday cheer anyway? The Grentch Steals Wintersday Award bows in favor of Grenth, not Dwayna!
Winner - Baktwerel

of course, Aero <3 yay judging buddy and thanks for the donation
Gemini, I like that idea! I'll have to remember to put that option on the judging sheet if anyone wants to be quoted with what they thought about the winners
EDIT: Note that I'll fill in the prizes for the awards in a few days to give some time for those wanting to donate to let me know Also will need to do some price checking on non-ecto/money/armbrace donations so the prizes aren't too uneven XD

I would like to suggest closing the workshop for entry 2 or 3 weeks b4 the official ANet contest ... why? ... to stimulate people to participate in teh workshop, and to prevent people from sending in their art at the last moment to widen their chance on winning something ... not accusing anyone, but i personally think the workshop is about participating and showing your progress... not sending in something at the end and putting up some scetches with it ... it's about participating in a manner that everyone can learn (also from other peoples mistakes and successes), not so much about winning something in the end ... closing for entry some time b4 the official contest hopefully reduces people hopping on at the last moment, and stimulates people participating in the actual workshop
Thus i don't mean the deadline for sending in your final piece, but actually entering the workshop and posting your progress ... Wonder how others feel about this !

Arghore, since you mentioned this during the party, I had thought about it and thought it was a very good point Although I didn't want to put a hard deadline, I did mention that the first three awards are based on participation throughout the workshop so that those putting in last minute entries will basically be out of the running for those three. Plus, I hope everyone will take what you said into consideration for the People's Award
However, the more I thought about it, I realized I didn't want to discourage people from not submitting their art if they didn't learn about the workshop until later so I didn't put that deadline on the other awards
I hope this works with everyone?

I greatly dislike the idea of closing it for entries that far ahead of when the official contest ends, myself. Not only is that not fair on those who find out about the workshop late, but how early someone submits an entry idea and how much they actually participate doesn't necessarily line up or correlate in any way.

I could consider a deadline for entry about 1 or 2 weeks before, but 3 or 4 are just enough. In one week you can - in theory - create two well worked on and receive good critique and have time to edit it. It does depend on the amount of time the artist have to spend and how active people are in the thread.
What we can do though, is try and market the workshop, by let's say try and get it on the front page of guru, make a wiki page and put it out on DA. If you want to you could even spread the word to your allies and see if you have a fellow artist in there that had no idea about this.
Limiting the awards one can be alleged for if one enters late is a good idea too. Or so I think. But it is a bit sad to have to put on limitations. Restrictions are artistic killing.

Thanks, Brandylynn <3
Gemini, Nice idea about advertising! Are you still a contributor on the guru dA page? Would you mind putting a blog entry or announcement on there linking here? Otherwise, I can go poke Sierra and see if she wouldn't mind
Arghore, continuing with Gemini's advertising idea, can you please do something in GuildMag or coordinate with Dutch to see if he would be up to making a blog post about it?
I have no idea on how to even start editing a wiki page, but if anyone wants to make one for the workshop and link it here, that would be great
Also, I don't really visit other GW fan sites, but if anyone has a favorite site and wants to take lead on making posts on other sites to link here (GW2 guru comes to mind for example), that would be great, too
Thanks in advance for your help, everyone I can't wait to see what we can come up with this Wintersday!

Since I couldn't participate enough in the Halloween Contest, I'm hoping to be able to check in more often this time around.
I'm still thinking of submitting craft work and I'm hoping I'll be able to send it in to the official contest. And if I can spare some time, I'll try to get something music related in as well for the fun. I'm thinking flute trio/quartet, as I don't have access to piano, don't have embouchure trained for piccolo, and as a hind-thought my singing level was mediocre.
I'll go make post in FA forum in IncGamers too before I forget... again /facepalm. I just keep forgetting about these things.

@Konig: eek, don't worry! Lit is more than allowed and super welcomed! I didn't make a separate category so that lit can compete in all categories and not just its own (I always thought the lit category was a double-edged sword, because you're guaranteed to win something but you're also guaranteed to not win one of the bigger awards since there are so few final entries.) Thanks for the donations, too
@Enchanted Krystal: Thank you for your donation <3
@satomz: ooh, yay craftwork! The official contest seems to love craftwork so I hope to see yours here in the workshop and on the official winners page! Thanks for posting in IncGamers Much appreciated!

I am revamping things on the DA page. I've been horribly inactive and will properly apologize for it. :] I am busy today and tomorrow doing my compass testing for University. My rat is also being put down... I will be back on Tuesday to get things done.
EDIT: Also PM'd you about being a judge and the possibility of talking about a few revamps here and there.

I could definitely do a blog post about the workshop on DA, Unless Sierra really wanna write it :X
I could probably do the wiki page too, unless you need a login... I could get one of those? *hums to myself* And I would be glad if some people would help edit some info on it in case I forgot about it.

what Tommy said.
I like that it's starting early, to give people a chance to get their ideas together. Not saying I'll actually be able to put something together, but I find Wintersday a lot more motivating (in the sense that it's freer in the choice of topics) than Halloween, and would love to participate again.
Not sure I'm awfully happy about an early deadline though, the chances of me being able to participate properly rise exponentially with how much of the workshop period is within my Christmas break. I'm not particularly interested in the official contest, so it would be a bummer having to rush something just to be able to participate in the workshop (which isn't the point, I think).
hehe I just thought I'd add my 10cents to the deadline discussion which seems to have sprung up on page 1. 24h after official seems fine, although personally I wouldn't mind extra time at all. What date is the official contest deadline? do we know that yet? I have a vague feeling it was pretty early last year, which is why my entry didn't progress past a sketch

First progress.
Update: Made a few changes.
Update: Started inking, the smuging was bothersome. Added M.O.X
Update: Started coloring what I could since I can't ink anything right now.
Update: Started inking and coloring again, made some major changes.
Update: DX I had no idea how hard it was to try to draw the northern lights with colored pencils.. I spent hours just blending that small section in the top corner. What a pain. And yes, the sky is a mess right now, but I'm sporadic when it comes to coloring so I just kind of jump all over the place.

So I went ahead and made the Wiki page: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Wintersday_Workshop
Now feel free to poke at it if you feel it needs a facelift or three in text or layout. If you dunno how to edit the text (it is really easy, you will probably understand what to do once you've hit edit) you could poke me to change it.

Brandylynn, that would be great for the Blade Radio advert! Thanks! And as for the wiki, since Gemini got it up, I guess it's fair game for any workshop participant to edit and show off their wiki skills
For your prize, just to make sure I type it correctly, would you call it a "Photoshop background commission"?

Hey, Thistle! I want to participate in the workshop!
Name: Sierraa
Idea for entry: Snowfall in Elona?
Art form type: Writing/Short-story
Progress Gallery Link: http://sierraa.me
After having read some of the comments to my 'rules on entry' i feel the need to clarify some things ...
1a. I would prefer the signing up to close say 10day or 1 week before the official contest deadline. This singing up doesn't have anything to do with when people submit their work! But it does prevent people from submitting their official contest piece into this workshop, without sharing progress and participating in the workshop... It also means that when signing up closes people know exactly how many people are part of the contest, there are no surprise entries at the last moment ... (aka. this means that Morag for example can just sign up now, and work on the art when there is time, even if this is in the final week. We all know she is participating and that is just fine! ) ... I too prefer as little restrictions, but tbh. i was rather disappointed to see someone enter a GW2 art piece at the last moment and snag that GW2 prize away from me at that very last moment. I do not blame anyone for this, and i was happely surprized to see the person post up progress, but had i known in advance i might have done something different, or would have seen it comming, the at the very last moment thing ticked me off somewhat though ... and here again to stress, I do not mind competition, if more people go for a similar catagory that is all the better for that catagory and stimulates all artists in that catagory to give it their best, and i do not mind loosing to somebody that is better! But seeing it comming and learning from the experience is lost if that person jumps in at the last moment, that is what I would like to prevent with this 'rule' ...
Sierra, Lol, OK, glad I didn't totally misread your PM and you're still a judge! But you're still in the running for the People's Award and Wintersday Spirit Award :P
EDIT: eep, you beat my post, Arghore XD Sorry, didn't realize you resigned from GuildMag D: Thanks for sending in the article though
