Saving Up for Chapter 2, Problems?
actionjack
With the upcoming of Chapter 2, I am curious to see how A.net will fix the money problem. The "Problem" I am refering to (although some will not think this is a one) is the gap between the rich and the poor. Those who have played all that time and horded their money, vs. the casual and inactive player and the new player who have little. While in theory, money should not be a big issue in GW since "skill" matter more, in truth, it does.
Say I got my chapter 2, and I don't have much in my bank from CH 1. I play a new character of Assassin and missions in Canthra... all is fun for few day, and then the rich would start getting the best armor and weapon that money can buy, while I am still in my beginer suit. Will this discourage me from further playing? In some shape and form, Yes. And I am sure lots people will feel the same too.
(Of couse, that is assuming Canthra does is still operating under the same currency, and that money could be ported.) And not saying hording your money is wrong, for you should always be rewarded for your time.
So how to better solve this possible arising problem? Suggestions?

i don't really see it as much of an issue.
put it this way. when a new character is made in the game now, the rich just pay to have it run and immediately buy 15k armor for it. those who can't afford the runs and 15k armors still have to work to get it up that far and farm until they can afford armor for their new characters. does it discourage people that they cannot immediately buy 15k armor for their new characters? if anything, it gives them motivation to play.

The only way to solve the problem is adding more goldsinks. But there isn't really a way to solve the "problem," because if you provide any way for the poor to get richer, the rich will exploit it to get richer still.
Then, you have introduced inflation into the economy, and made everybody's gold more worthless, all while failing to reduce that wealth gap.
The only way I can see to do it would be to increase the good drop and gold rate for those whose net wealth is below a certain value. Of course, the rich could exploit this tremendously by having two accounts - and porting everything from one account to another, in effect having one very rich account, and one very poor acount.
While I agree with you that the wealth gap out there sucks (I'm about average in wealth - a little less than, I'd wager) - I'm not so sure there's much practical that can be done about it except find a way to make everybody have LESS gold...
ie: more goldsinks. Things that cost a lot but provide little benefit other than amusement. Like dye. Except, if you see someone wearing black armor, you can still see the "status" difference in wealth - someone was able to afford all that dye. The value is still there, just in a different form.
We could ask the Devs to induce Communism, I guess. =D But that would take out too much of the fun.... The chat window would read, "Tyria shares 108 gold."

with items just as good statwise as the pretty ones.
as for why shouldnt the casual once a week player have all the top prestige items that the 3 hour a day person earned.............well maybe because the person earned them by lots of work
i dont see a problem
King's Spectre
I don't see a problem. People who play normally through the game will end up with gear that's just as good as someone with 2000 jade.. d'oh!

Didn't they also say that they were adding more armor for each proffession? I though I read that in the article posted. So that will be another gold sink to spend money on.....

i just cant wait until chap 2 im getting bored of chap 1

While I am too far away from even be called "wealthy" in this game, the fact remains that the gap between the rich and the poor will always remain, and Its only natural. I always wish I had this and that, and while I rarely get anything in return to my wishes ( ), I dont let that small, discouraging fact, stand in my way of fun.
So yeah, I will be terribly pissed/sad/whatever when ch.2 is out, but I will stil have my fun with it.
Poor ppl to prez!!!!

i dont think they should change the money problem because if you sit here all day farming money, good for you you will have more money. If you are inactive then you will make that average salary. Its just like real life work the more hard work you do the more you get paid, the less you do the less you make. Depends how much time you put in to the game. Im addicted to gaining money thats why i farm, i think to myself all the time and wonder why i do it, because it is a waste of time

I have a feeling they may have a different currency in Cantha so people should stockpile items which will sell in the new zones.

i like ghaving rich and poor because then it gives me( the poor) something to look forward to and to try to accomplish
Two April Mornings
there will always be rich and poor - i hope - makes GW different

As someone who can quite confidently say he's dirt poor, I don't believe that seeing rich people with fancy armors is going to discourage me from playing. Hell, I've run around post-searing Ascalon with my starting armor, and everything up to the desert with Yak's, and I don't even mind that. Mostly, however, envy of rich people doesn't make me want to quit. It just makes me want to play more so I can afford those widgets.
generik
Erm, so what if you are poor?
In this game you can get the VERY BEST weapons for.. free.

Think the Beta to Gold transition.. but with out the wipe...
Its a Jump Start issue.
Also I notice that none of the people who replie are Town Dweller... meaning most must be play the game for some time and not a noobie.
Also free Best weapon does not apply to PvE. Not Even in PvP (espcially if the best is something like HoD sword for them)

Well, you see, something like the HoD sword wasn't meant to happen. And those that found out about it KNEW it would be worth lots, so they went and got them. It was a quest reward(i believe) and wasn't meant to be worth 50k-100k+. What im am definitely worried about is the price of runes and ectos in Cantha. Will they start off as cheaply as they did when Chapter 1 came out, or will they automatically acquire the current price that is in Tyria? I say this because IF the current gold you have on this account now can be used in tyria (in any way you would like to transfer it), someone with 1mil can go buy 200 ectos and wait for price to go up and make a HUGE profit selling them later. Think current ecto prices (9-10k). This is what has me thinking. Will Cantha use the same currency as Tyria. Will we be able to transfer money between accounts. Will all item prices be set to default. And most importantly will they ever think to have a price cap on certain items??? It would be nice if they didn't allow prices of items go past 250% of the default value. This would have seriously helped in slowing down inflation from the beginning. This should be implemented in some way in Chapter 2. If not, I can honestly say I will be in cantha buying ectos for dirt cheap and holding on till prices go up! lol

Since the aoe nerf the econemy has slowed down and prices have dropped across the board. This will be a continuing trend all the way up until release of chapter 2.
After release the new items prices will spike to very high prices due to the amount of gold in the game. Some poor people will get rich and money will be transfering everywhere. It will balance itself out.

i dont think that the ecto will be used in chapter2,
and for those rare materials we have now, which we cant use (rubies+ sapphires and others) they will be used ofcourse BUT they may aslo become a COMMON material instead of a rare one, so all of us, who ahve been paying 7k at trader for one will be loosing alot. BUT they may aslo stay as rare as they are now, and then the prizes for them sky rocket, since there are cool craftable items and armors...
as for the rich and poor thing, it isnt a problem, because most of the rich ppl have worked hard to get all their stuff (except the ebay buyers) and if the poor are so anguis in getting richer, they should start working harder to become rich.
i used to be one of the poors, until a day i found a very rare item, and sold it.
then i had around 300k in storage instead of 50k.

Meh. The poor can come polish my sword collection. And my boots when they finish that.

I felt this was/is/will be a big issue, and asked Gaile about any plans for a currency change. Her answer was something along the lines of 'No.'
Me? I'm poor. I've hardly ever farmed at all, and FoW/Uw I have yet to really get into, and Sorrow's Furnace with all the good weapons. I envy all those rich people with 1000s of K who will have everything good when they start getting into Chapter 2.

ok im replying and im a town dweller
ok 1 way to stop the problem is look at the place people solo e.g. griffons or ettins
with the ettins ive seen the w/mo get screwed ova by mergoyles or bog skales when fighting ettins so maybe spawnin these skales and mergoyles abit more will stop sum of this over the top farming
imagine if the 55 monk build was nerfed ^_^
i got to admit im not exactly poor on the game but i have a me/mo or me/n change alot for pve still managed to get marhans armour and weapons i have modded myself for my likin i need no money now

Most So-Called "Rich Players" just get their $$$$ Off ebay, wat the fun of doing that ? Real Life $ Vs Game Gold = stupid
Even so these "rich Players" with their Fow And "Godly Weapons" still sux @ Game play .. happen to group up with a "fow Warrior" maybe 1 of the very few STUPID players i had ever seen ..

Yeah, there are those that prefer to "Buy" they're money. To tell you the truth, I wasn't really wealthy UNTIL after I got all 4 of my characters ascended, into droknar's armor(which I paid for with the money I made during the game killing things) and past S. Shiverpeaks, and past Hell's. Since then, I started farming and running and any other way that i've found to make money. I've made quite a bit, although I've never had a perfect weapon drop for me and only 1 superior vigor(NO sup. absorb. yet...). I'll keep doing that until A.) I buy another account to try out the other professions as Primaries or B.) Chapter 2 comes out. Although, having FoW armor doesn't necessarily mean you went to ebay, it doesn't also mean you HAVE to be damn good at this game either.

As someone who has only a few Sigils as currency, I cant see why people farm for gold.
You can buy a guild hall for 20k and thats not hard to get eh, all the top weapons are collectable and armour is cheap.
In chapter 2 I doubt i will be any worse off than someone with 600k in their account... being rich doesnt make you a better player.
You guys need to stop thinking in Diablo or WoW terms where items = skills.

I am not amongst the very wealthy either, but still i try to save up some 150k for chapter.. All this money I try to get with winning HoH. I already got 87k of it though..
so that won't be that much of a problem since i got 59k of winning HoH 3 times yesterday

Like many people i have played since the BWE, all my chars have atleast 2 sets of 15k armour each, only for ease of use, ie; change my healing armour to protection armour, my death armour 2 blood armour, etc etc.
i have clocked over 2000+ hours into GuildWars & 90% in PvE the other 10% is in PvP.
you cannot hate people for having quality goods & it DOES NOT mean they bought gold either.
for instance, i deleted a lvl 20 wammo with 2 sets of armour, so that = 2x sup vigs & 2x sup absorb, even tho i LOST 1x sup absorb in salvage *cry* i still have over 200k to play with after selling the runes.....i then got a mate to run me to citadel so i could get some cool looking pimp armour for my mesmer...at level 4.....the name Lord Punishment, belonged to my warrior.....but i have held onto it since BWE......name choices a few & far between these days rofl
point im trying to make is, ive made, played & deleted so many chars its not funny & im sure others here have done the same, each time i play a char thru & get bored i salvage everything, sell runes, sell weapons, pocket gold into storage.....do this enough times along with farming & you could make yourself a millionaire....hell do 6 runs of SF & sell some greens, i got 2 brohns in about 15 runs, sure 15 runs is a lots, but when i was selling my brohns for 100k & 5 ecto's it made it all the more worthwhile.....
The other thing i would like to point out is that what makes you think people will wait a few days for new armour? im sick of seeing clones of myself around tyria.....you need to spend 70k on black dyes just to look different, either that or dye one piece of armour a diff colour...but wait..thats been done 2.....this game needs the new armour, like its been said before, seeing people with the new armour will give people inspiration...............i allready have money put aside, its the first thing ill do other than testing new classes.
....dont think im an ass or anything & im not rubbing your nose in it, im mearly pointing out that the "rich" earnt their goods.......except for those who by gold.
If you EVER want to party up for a farm mate, drop me a whisp ingame & we can hook up, im always up for a good farm.
Cheers & see you all in chapter 2

There's an awful lot of whining in this thread. Nef this and nerf that. No one ever said that being rich makes you a better player. And assuming that everyone who is fairly well off ebays it is just plain retarded and ignorant.
Nerf the 55 build? Then nerf the solo warrior spider build. And nerf the solo warrior ataaxe build. May as well nerf the 2/3/4 man UW trapper build too. And make SS less powerful. If you whiners had your way every weapon for every class would do exactly the same amount of damage on every monster. Every hex and every enchantment would have the exact same effect. And every monster would drop exactly the same item/gold every time.
What a wonderful idea.

amen, if everybody was the same there would be no challenge, no desire to compete.......no life for this game.
& yes having the most expensive armour means nothing.....i wear grotto's & get pwned just as much as the guy wearing fissure, who gets hurt just like the guy wearing droks armour.
all classes are equal, every skill has an oppisite, & its upto "us" the players to work it out & come up with the good builds.....& then the better build to beat that one...
if we get owned its not because weapon isnt as shiny as the warrior's its because we were outclassed in skill selection.....if you have 1g in your account you could be better than the guy with 200k
......everybody is definatly better than gold buyers........thats just cheap & nasty.....+ it kills innocent chinese gold farmers, they starve for days to get you 100k .........play the game normally, save the chinese gold farmers
*please note that the term "chinese gold farmer" is not racist in any form, reaserch & find out for yourself who farms & sells gold *

I'm wondering how they'll do chap 2, lvl 20s running through areas that Lvl 4/5s are ment to is gonna be boring, thus I think they might run 2 paths
Ascended and new character.
ectos and such will have to be the same
else I can go to chap 2, buy a load of ectos, go to chap 1 and sell them to the rare material collector ad infinitume for super fast cash.
as a relatively poor character who's trying hard to get rich I really don't see the problem with rich guys going out and buying droks equiv armour that looks different for vast piles of gold.

i dont think it will be a case of "loading" diff chapters....correct me if im wrong but the creators of GuildWars are very proud of their 'seemless' world.
i think it will just be more cities, new maps unlocked for those who buy the new chapter.
those who dont will still be able to see the changes (ie; assasin class dropping in Ascalon D1 to sell some junk) ,but not be able to visit new cities etc...then they will get the desire to buy it.....i could be wrong, but loading into a diff chapter would seem pointless.
i am certain on is that level 20's will not have the same missions as the low levels.
the storyline will probably continue from the current one & tie into the new classes plotline (mabey an alliance who knows!)
one thing im 100% on is that all our q's will be answered when it hits the shelves.

what i think will be a good idea is, the only people who can go from chapter1 to chapter2, are the ones who ahve completed chapter1, and those who make a new character in chapter2.

I will try to be frank in this post...
It's like in real life: If you want to have something, you need to work for it!
The difference between "rich" and "poor" people in GW is usually the armor they are wearing. When will you people FINALLY get it that a Fissure armor is the same thing as a Droks armor with different looks? YOU DON'T NEED 15k or FoW ARMOR!!!!
Why the hell do you "casual" players always seem to think you need EVERYTHING that very active players have? Especially when considering that no armor or weapon will make your character any better. Only your experience does, and this can't be bought with money. GW DOES cater for you casual guys, you know? I played close to 2,000 hours of GW and believe me that I don't have ANYTHING that makes my characters superior to those of a "casual" player. They might look a bit better since I've sunk almost 2 million gold into armor sets, but that's pretty much it.
If you really think that a missing "+30 health mod" on your sword keeps you from being successful in GW, you need to grow up. Good players probably could use Candy Cane weapons in Tombs and still win. The so called "perfect" weapons in GW are usually like 10% better than a totally blank one. Collector weapons are often the best you can get for most situations. They are FREE! So really, where exactly is the problem here?
And please stop that bullshit claiming that everyone who has more than like 5k in their account must be an ebayer. Some people got their money without breaking the rules, too. Yes, really.

I agree with Fantus.
When I arrive in Cantha I will not give a disembowelled goat if someone has 15k armour already there. No, really. I will not give it a moment's thought.
Just like now. I don't farm; I just play the missions and quests and do guild stuff. I don't have a lot of money. Since I've almost finished all the missions/quests on my two main characters I will probably teach myself to farm efficiently and get some expensive stuff for my characters. Lack of money doesn't stop you enjoying the game, unless you are prone to jealousy.
Besides, I'll be too busy loving all the new towns, armours (the standard ones of course), quests and the story when I reach the shores of Cantha.

Many are blind to see one thing. GW, as advertise and design with this in mind, is that it is a game not about item or gold. Thus it is not how many potions I can by with my gold that would win a PvP. One can easily get by with just playing the game regularly, with out any need for extra farming, and everything should be rosey. However, people started to farm and do runs, which while is allow in the game, is still a break from the game Dev first inteneded.
But don't get me wrong, I have no major problem with farming. Its a result of lack of content and just a fun brainless activtly that you can feel achieve about (since I do it alot too) And you should always be reward for your time.
But now with Chapter 2, everyone is not starting at the same start line. Like the Dorku compalins, it might kill any low lv PvP, and skipping them from what Dev intended for them to be playing. Also consider the possiblity of the PvP Missions. How would you feel if you cann't get by a mission because they have better armor than you?
Now, since it is a new Land, I am sure the dev could add several stuff to reduce this sort of things.

Thus it is not how many potions I can by with my gold that would win a PvP. |

I suggest you maybe play the game a little bit more before coming out with poor arguments. There are no potions in this game |

Story missions match groups with and against each other (whole 8 player groups included) |
I would specualate, but my guess is that you won't be able to run your new character in Cantha to the best armor place off the bat. Uncertain how accessible will you to your storage/gold.

Well arean had this problem in mind when making the game by putting a money limit of 1m in your account. But then ectos became worth 10k each making and ecto like a silver dollar. no matter what there will always be a gap between the rich and the poor.
