I really envy your stubbornness in seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. But I do think you're going to get disappointed. I genuinely think if they shut GW down it wouldn't affect their GW2 population much at all. Those who continue to play GW2 do so because they like the game or feel it's worth waiting for in terms of getting better. I regularly play GW2, and my experience from the game is that those who didn't like it quit a long time ago, and almost all of them quit GW as well when it completely died after GW2 was released. From talking to many people on GW2 as well it's clear to me that those who are left genuinely like the game and don't care much for it's first and it doesn't seem they will any time soon. Even some of the really hardcore players(PvE'ers and PvP'ers do not come back to the first game even when it's their favourite thing having a week bonus). Seriously, I run a blog on tumblr as well and it's a minority there that play GW2 and actually care about GW. Everywhere I look it's only really people on Guru that seems very passionate still about GW, and even the majority there I dare say have come to terms with the fact that there will not be a GW1.5 and we wont see the epicness we saw in the first game in the second.
You can always hope but I stopped hoping when they automated the game.

yes, I believe they gave us all the answers at that time as well.
Yes the 2 games have polarized many of the player base---there are few that like both (tons who like one or the other), I also agree that 2 would continue on quite well without the first being around---however----it would say something about the company (which many here already know), so, since it costs them very little (especially now) to keep it running, I see no reason for them to shut it down until it gets too raty (ahahahhha) to keep it afloat.
so I dont see them ever caring again about bots, rmt, syncing (much), etc...no updates (other than for emergencies--and then it might take a while if it doesnt affect 2)....so enjoy what we have /sad panda

neko, show me where you see the future (real future, not some fanbased stuff)
what i hear from MANY sides (NOT just on GW forums/sites), is that GW2 is becoming more boring already, cuz of the way they handle GW2
and they could make GW's fanbase alot happier.... and even bring people back to GW
i know they wont update, but IF they (finally) see the light, they would
reason they wont, is cuz as they are now, they arent very smart
i remember seeing alot of "i like GW alot more than other MMO's, cuz its not as basic as those" which GW2 is starting to become
GW2 is alot of grinding if you want some stuff, GW is grinding only if you want titles, and there's way more in GW than all other MMO's..... more ways of playing
GW2 is going that basic MMO way, so people will become bored after some time
after the hype (whats left of the hype) of GW2, they either return to GW, or stop coming to anet's stuff
i have seen people being hyped when GW2 was released, and for a year or longer, they defended the stuff in GW2 which i dont like, nowadays they say the same thing i said
so if anet ever would be smart, they'd see GW still has alot of potential
i bet that if they wanted, they could send a few to GW (not just 3 or 10.... more) and get more money out of it
i'm NOT saying anet will do so, i'm just saying that anet should see it..... if they can swallow their stupid pride
also, i'm NOT saying this cuz GW is the only MMO which can make me play longer than a few hours, i say this cuz i kinda see it that way
i have seen Gw2 forums (official), and heard they just deleted topics cuz it had something from GW in it, and banned some who only went against someone's post with their own opinion
then i have seen the old community we had, with their "the game is good as it is" and the "you dont know about game designing" while i'm more excperienced with parts of game designing than they are, as they have no idea how easy it can become if you keep doing it
anyway, that community back in GW2.... i doubt many people who had that sh** going on here (guru too, yes) on GW forums, want it again, so might quit discussing and either leave GW2 if they disagree with anet, or just play GW2 til they are tired of it (which happened plenty of times already, seen that in GW, and not all said "its too different from GW")
anyway, i dont say GW2 is going down anytime soon, but if they screw up GW more than the old anet ever has done with GW (which wasnt that bad if you look at how nice the game itself.... not the community, is these days, like 7 hero, zaishen quests etc), they might not exist as long as another 9 years
tbh, i've heard more complaints from GW2 players about GW2 (with updates, content... or not enough content, and cash shop and much more) than GW and GW2 players complained about other MMO's with grinding and cash shops, and being too basic MMO
anyway, most here say they wont do anything new in GW, but you cant see the future, and even official announcements can be changed, as anyone's mind can change.... or situation

I'd like you to give me these pages, because I used to read on for example GW2Guru and they used to trash the game so much there, yet I did not notice any lack of players in the ACTUAL GAME.
You cannot base your opinion solely on just forum posts if you haven't even logged into the game they are talking about, because the thing is, those who trash a game aren't playing it they are whining about it on a forum, but those who like it are playing it and stay away from the forums. And by just logging in I can clearly see there's enough followers for this game not to actually be affected at all. Sure it is quite certain times of the day or in certain zones, but honestly I wouldn't base my opinion on that, because if you did you'd think everyone hates GW2, yet the game seems to be doing fairly well.
GW2 has some issues but it seems that many people aren't affected that much. The new Living Story people seem to be pretty happy about as well, myself included, it's pretty interesting.
Not sure what you mean where I see the future? GW has no future, that's the thing.

i base my opinions on what i see
and GW has no future? maybe no future changes, it'll stay online long enough to say it has a future
but i guess you know more about games work in that way, even though i yet have to see your games
this negativity scares away people, and i'm talking about what happens in the future with GW
even if nothing happens with GW in the future, it DOES have a future, cuz then it stays as it is
people called GW dead right after many joined GW2 (of which many came back to GW, which i have SEEN in GW), yet anet did change some things, like no favor needed and some more stuff
some even called GW dead before GW2 got released.... makes no sense
"less active" does not equal "dead"

Don't argue with them, nothing good can come out of it.
GW is running on smoothly, and while the official support is gone, there's still a player base, especially after you join a guild.

There's even an 'all you can eat' cookie bar in game, for those that can find it.
So don't give up on the game just yet.

Ok i'm going to barge here a little because I actually agree with Nekodesu and I understand his point of view so I'll try to smooth his saying in a way people actually find it less aggressive about the status Guild Wars is holding right now (inevitable truth that we can't get rid of)
It's not a matter of having a future or not. Guild Wars verily can't ( CAN'T, CAN'T - The word is "Can't" ) get any better.
There is no support for it whatsoever. No new content. Not even vigilance to keep the game bot and cheater free so newcomers don't feel abused and exploited.
No restore tools if any inconvenience happens.
Not even one (and I seriously mean - ONE - the prime number ) Developer/programmer is behind it. All of them were shifted to Guild Wars 2 development. What we are receiving now is nothing other than charity.
And most important other games always come up and eventually scatter people away. Like it or not and this is not a rule for Guild Wars but for all MMO's out there. Hell its a rule and a constant for all gamers for all I know.
And least but not last there is no foundation at all and Anet wants to keep it that way. They have insistently told us so in a variable form of ways. There is no way to deny that.
You can't hope a cow lives eternally if it's owner doesn't give any food. Eventually the cow will dry and will pass away. And that's what's Anet has been doing since 2012 leading us gently and without any rush to the exit door.
I agree that is annoying getting these negatives messages within the community itself (what is left from it) because we nurture so many feeling towards this game (hobby) which collides with our expectations of maintaining it forever since it gave us so many hours of enjoyment.
But that doesn't change the fact that Anet wants the game to die by starvation and there is nothing we can do against it. And here is the part that bitching about it won't help at all but things can't get any worse either.
Aside from that don't blame Nekodesu like he is the one that is speeding up the process of closure of Guild Wars. Blame ArenaNet itself.
Nekodesu has just passed the mourning phase and it's ahead of us. We will eventually get there.

There is nothing new with what you just said. So what are we supposed to do with all this 'truth', just delete our characters and move on to another game?
We all have our opinions, but can please all those with the mantra 'GW is dead' please move on, because it's clearly for you that it's time to move on to other games. For the others that still play, despite knowing the game's day is past it's prime date and there's unlikely to ever be any more updates, we still enjoy the game. We can respact your doom and gloom, but then please move on and let those that play the game still do it.

This constant battle of people denying the inevitable and existing state of affairs and people reassuring it is what it makes this whole thing "disgusting".
At the end of the day "both sides" should just enjoy the game while we can. But denying those facts is just too juvenile and wishful thinking.
Bristlebane
My question still remain. What are we supposed to do with all this doom and gloom, give up? Everything must come to an end, that's the truth. Earth will most likely be destroyed by the Sun in a few billion years, and universe might collapse in a Big Crunch from which there might be no espace, does that mean we should all then just give up and call it a day?
Because this is basically the same with GW or any other game, it will all reach a point in time where the game is past it's prime and eventually come to an end.

PS: I understand how frustrating this is. I love this game.Hell if I ever won the lottery I would for sure dedicate one or two millions (out of 100) so I could revamp it. So whenever I see people more pissed than I am, I cannot help but think that it must be real grievous for them.

I too would do anything I could to keep the game alive.
Still working on a web app to more easily help people join up for missions and farms (even if it's too little, too late, I feel I have to try). If there ever was a privately developed server, I would love to help work out the client/server protocols. It wouldn't be GW, it wouldn't be compatible, it would more be a GW1.5 where it's heavily GW1 inspired but where we sadly had to start with new accounts.
But until any of that comes, I'll just keep enjoying the game.

i think doom and gloom DOES bad to GW, as newer players will be like: meh, nevermind that game then
also, GW still gives profit, heard that from many people (not just the ones who heard it from other players, but also some who have seen it..... wish i asked for that and saved it, so could show you now)
and if anet kills off GW, the GW2 community will also be hurt, and most will think "is GW2 going down like that, too? i dunno if i should keep playing GW2 then...."
you see, even though its another game, it:
1. has same name (except for the number)
2. is made by the same company
and 3. for those who know that GW's community is still alive, they will think "wait what??? many people still played it, yet they turn it off like that!!!!"
in other words, it WILL harm the rest of what anet does
and since internet is much easier to use, and much more open, they will even doubt the developers in the future (in case some of the devs will have future projects), so it might hurt all those devs
not as much as anet as company, but each dev behind it now might get hurt with future stuff they would join
its not 100% the way it works (dev nr 20 leaving a living game and getting hurt in other games cuz of it), but it does happen like that, just not as badly as anet would be hurt cuz of that
i know of people who disliked GW2, and werent in the mood for GW, so they left both, even though GW was still a nice game to them
and heard that happened more with others who i dont know

I think we need to keep a positive attitude as well----I have a friend who was diagnosed with cancer, she is not sitting around going 'oh woe is me, I have cancer, the end is near, I am going to die soon---' no, she is living her life to the highest degree with the time she has left (since NONE of us know WHEN that date will be for us or gw!).
We should enjoy the time we have left and stop the doom and gloom (we all know it, please, there is no elephant in this room). We know the stance of the company that currently has sway over it (they are not the same people who created it). No need to continue to beat the corpse of the horse.
We are still here, WE are still playing (heck I even made a new character last week), I for one am still going to enjoy playing the game until the company turns it off.

What you do is you accept that the game has no future in the sense that it will not be updated or cared for any more. I think there's a difference of being in denial than being positive. I think you can only be positive once you accept the inevitable(that the game is what it is, and it will not see any updates for the rest of its time).
I love Guild Wars, but it's like I Ride My Pokemon said(and gracefully put all my opinions into a non-aggressive post(thank you!)), I am past the mourning and I have understood that there is no future for the game.
Does that stop me from enjoying Guild wars? No. I still play, actually just did the ZM on all my PvE characters
Also I am gonna try to get into GvG again, and still waiting for AB week!
Also I don't think cancer and a game is comparable. Although I understand your feelings!
If your question is what is there to do with this doom and gloom, then what is there to do with being in denial? What good comes out of that? You might as well enjoy the game while NOT being in denial and hyping yourself up about a miracle so that when they do shut the game down(which I don't think they will do in the nearest future) your world wont come crashing down. That's what it did for me when GW2 came out and that's why I let go of the idea that somehow, a developer is going to see the light and suddenly reincarnate GW into it's prime time.

There's no denial here, I don't see anyone arguing against that the game might never be updated again. Good? Good.
Now let's play the game we enjoy despite all that until the server is shut down.
And for those that feel it's pointless, just move on.

no denial here--I understand that all good things come to an end (some sooner than others --and the reason for my cancer analogy.).
I just want folks to stop with the gw is dead---we all know this already, no need to rererrereeererereererepeat it, it will end, we know this too, we just want to enjoy the time it has left to its fullest (and we want some hope too---cant blame folks for wanting wishes).
got my new ranger to level 10 and working on finishing the starter island of nf with them!

Actually I think GW is far from dead. Yeah it isn't what it used to be but it's 9 years old.
Today a few of us got together enough people to do a AB match, actually if you log in you will maybe be able to join, there's a few teams
But be quick, it's getting late!

Suggestion....?
This has gone a long way off topic and nearly turned into flamewars.
Stop the doom and gloom.
Enjoy it while we can.
Get a grip on what is important and what isn't important.
Accept that there are things outside of our control.
Enjoy the game while we can. Did I say that already?
Maybe close this thread because it's gone so far off topic I can't see the start any more...

Would it be possible to make an attempt at getting some exposure onto this? Make an attempt at getting it viral?
I know IGN only does "Games news" but maybe it can be sent to them or some other show with a reasonable amount of viewers.
If you can get it popular on reddit, that would be the best though I don't see it happening.
If you can shed light on the case maybe we could get some sort of apology from ANet...
----------
I mean, the fact that he couldn't even answer the first question that was about his own experience with GW is completely rediculous. Surely someone will see the sensationality in this and "pity" the GW community?

Besides, what use is an apology from ArenaNet? We knew that they had abandoned the original when they implemented full automation over a year ago. Better to just enjoy what is left in the game or move on, as ArenaNet (unfortunately) have.

I think making the base game (prophesies) free to play, and keeping the other campains on sale for 10 dollar or smt would be a very smart move bussiness wise for NCsoft.
It would attrackt loads of people, without changing their model.

I think that dropping the price of all of the campaigns would be a good idea--the game is almost 10 years old so paying the original full price for prophecies is insane, as well as the rest of them (eye came out in 2007? so half price or LESS would be better for it as well).
$10 for each chapter and $5 for eye is what I suggest (since you could get the whole set for $30 not to long ago---), if you buy the complete collection--$20.

i think its the way to go at this point in the game, free Proph and lower price on other one would bring fresh wave of player.
Ayuhmii Shanbwa
with free proph (or any other campaign or eotn) they would get even less money
i bet if they'd "fix" some stuff like WiK having 1. having a "stop wik spawns" quest like woc has, or 2. have no wik spawns when you dont have a wik quest
and woc having the "stop woc spawns" quest right after quest nr 1
that'd make alot of people way happier, as most people i see last few years, either dont like, or even hate those 2
thats 1 small change which would make people happy, thats what they could do once in a while, to keep people playing, and invite friends to GW (= money)
yes anet, many people already like it when they sometimes get real small changes
they wont listen, will they?
but making the game even cheaper.... especially free? wouldnt that hurt the game even more? people paying less if they wann try GW, and if they leave, anet+ncsoft will have gotten even less from those who dont give GW a chance (like leaving after 1-3 hours new in the game.... or days in some cases)
the game isnt as basic as f2p with their p2w ways, so its different already, making people try it, and has no fees, so its easy to pay and leave the game when you want to, and come back when you want to, without paying anything !!!
plus its much cheaper than most MMO's (ingame stores can be adicted, and fees cost more over time..... plus some games need to be bought AND have fees... COUGHWoWCOUGH)
some said free pvp would be nice, but i doubt it, as people would see a dead pvp in GW, and wont stay long
a free pre searing, with no way to get to post searing might work
i think many underestimate the money they still get from GW (including anet themselves), as they compare it to GW2..... that'd be the same as comparing GW to WoW, with its 1. pay the game itself, 2. pay fees to play the whole game, 3. pay for expansions and 4. ingame store
of course thats more money, but you have to pay alot just to play the whole game, with GW thats not the case, so its cheap already
1. GW is much cheaper than when i bought campaigns 1 by 1
2. GW has no fees at all
3. unlike many MMO's i've seen, you dont get 2-4 char slots and need to buy more if you want more, you get like 8 already (counting the WHOLE game being bought)
funny thing is, people who say the game is dead-ish, mostly play with guilds in GW... meaning its not dead-ish
i know i've seen many guilds alot, which i see in your info box here (like PhD and such)
oh well, call a game dead, and the game will be dead over time, as people dont wanna take risks (even though alot do pay fees right away for many MMO's)
ps. this is based on my opinion and point of view (the way i see it, that is)
EDIT: also, if proph would be free, it would hurt even more, as most proph towns and outposts are dead, people gather in kamadan to do anything
if you would be new in an instance based game, would you stay if you play free, and see noone in any place you go to (except american district pre sear)?

yeah, would love it if they were to fix the wik thing (I have an account w/o eye and I will never be able to get rid of the wik spawns unless I team up with someone).
I dont think making it free would help--it would probably make more people upset that they paid for it, but dramatically dropping the price to a few dollars (5-10) would still give anet income from it, not upset too many folks, and show that it is still a good idea to have it available--offering an incentive (besides hom stuff) to get it.

No, making it free would be the best way.
Look at Dungeons and Dragons online that totally revived.
If you make it free you can advertise it as free; just think of the sidebanner add 'Guildwars, now for free'; that would bring in TONS of people. TONS. Hundred of thousands. Look at runescape, there are enough people in the world who cannot pay the entry cost. Plus many F2P titles don't even come close to GW's quality. It would sweep the competition. And it would get new reviews in magazines, etc.
And people will then buy the expantion and other campaigns. If they can be seduced to buy some armour or a pet in an item mall in another game, won't they be secuded to buy a whole game for 5 or 10? But you have to dragg them in first. Areana net would be making major money without any new investment. Plus, it won't upset the balance by introducing an item mall.
And you seriously think people would feel robbed paying for a game 9 years ago which they already completed? Bringing in new players increases the value of their investment.
Also fixing small changes won't bring in new people. You wanna aim at people just browsing the web. And younger kids, who can't pay yet but wanna start gaming, and a year later can pay for another campaign. It's not about the cost itself, its about the entry bar. Free of 1 dollar makes an enourmous diffirence.

You are talking about free bot accounts flooding the game in a time when anet doesn't do anything about them?

300.000 new people, easy
30.000 buy another campaign (10%) for 10 dollar.
300.000 in the bank; enough to employ a few peeps.
Anyway; if you want new players - besides myself - in, this is the way. New things still won't give you exposure for a 9 year old game with a sequal; only some radical change can do that.

You keep seeing it from a perspective of reviving it for current players; but a hudge influx of new players and thus new money is the only way to a) make casual pvp thriving again ; b) generate means for further support for current players by areananet.
Anyway I dunno why I'm defending this idea so much; I'm just a random person. Have fun guys, hope to see you in the game in a few weeks.

i doubt it, every person coming online sees an almost deserted place, then leave and that happens alot..... no f2p-ers left either
besides, proph takes longer to get through, and meeting up with people who know what they do is rare..... and then the newbies should be lucky if they even get help from those people.... the "we do HM, as NM is just for noobs" people are still here
also, people see an old game for a small price, but then it goes totally free.... must go real bad for them to have to go free, better not touch it
the little bit GW cost is already too small to attract people, as most think that expensive games are always better, cuz they are expensive (like WoW having 3 forced payments (which are 1. buy game, 2. fees to play it, 3. expansions not free) and 1 extra... the ingame store)
if proph would get ALOT of people, and not just normal ones, but patient ones to get to lions arch and such, then MIGHT work, but most who joined GW and bought all campaigns+eotn who i've seen in active guilds, left in no time, cuz they dont get help for 100% of the friggin time
and if a guild has no talking people for 10 minutes, they log off and leave for half a year or longer, and come back and 50-50 to see them again
sigh, its already bad enough that i, who defended anet for years and recently got bad news from people who saw stuff from em about not supporting GW any more than automation, have to admit my defeat and give up on anet for more in GW, so why make it sound like its good that proph (the least active part cuz of no pve only skills and no grinding titles and such, and nothing for the 4 newer profs) should be free, so that people are like: playing...... no thx, bye
and try another game
free for a cheap game..... wouldnt that make people think its so weak, that even though its cheaper than most MMO's (and even has no pay to win ingame store like most free MMo's have) it still has to be free for a part?
50 newbies in proph would not let em stay long, they would see that only newbies are there, you dont count newbies, you look at players who play the game alot when joining a game and then you try to join their community asking for help, and learning through teamwork with those who do know more, not with other newbies
anyway, i think i made my point here, dont need to repeat it again, as its just how i see it, and should be clear by now
same goes for making it cheaper, unless its just the "get proph, factions,NF and eotn for cheaper than 1 by 1"
also, making pvp free would only make everyone here who does pvp angry, as the pvp areas have more than enough bots from accounts which are being paid for (yea bot users, get banned with your accounts, and buy a new one to continue with bots all the time, anet would get an income from that for sure), so making it free would make it unplayable
i dont pvp, so i could care less, but for those who do pvp, its gonna be a nightmare

personal observations, as i've seen that happen many times, and not just in GW (about the cheaper games not being played much, cuz some think that cheap stuff is always less good than expensive ones.... and thats not even just with games)
or did you think i would go on on the same topic cuz i assume stuff to happen.... which is partly true, as thats what opinions are also based on (i've never seen exact numbers of what anet loses through GW and such)
so yea, i talked about stuff what i've seen ingame on these forums alot (also said "i see.... happen ingame") so i thought you'd take me seriously
i say what i see, so that others see what i saw... if they believe me
but i guess you didnt take me seriously the time i spent here, as you are doubting me by asking that..... so i guess its no use to discuss stuff, and explain, cuz i dont say stuff without reason
now that i answered your question (in short...), do you believe me, or is it best for me to not reply anymore?

Don't take my question so seriously. You see, many people do make assumptions and present them as facts, to express it nicely.
What I believe is of lesser importance. I enjoy the game and I play it for as long as I can. And I enjoy to play with new players, I sometimes envy how they get to enjoy this game for the first time. And even after 9 years I still do a lot of NM due to having 6 accounts. Not everyone is an elitist.

Just for the fun of it I'll reply:
Ayuhmii Shanbwa you seem like a nice and helpful guy, but you seem to be arguing besides me.
Let me start from the beginning again. The first question is how to draw attention to this 9 year old game. Lowering price, fixing small things etc. won't help bc people simply don't come across this game in the first place. The only way to put the spotlight on gw is either making a new campaign or making it free to play. The first is unrealistic.
- Next, it will pull thousands of people in at the same time. This is what happens to good F2P games that are advertised. So to counter your idea, 1) there will be thousands of people, it won't be deserted, 2) its an instanced game, especially in the first hours of play you don't need other people. Of all MMO's starting alone hurts here least.
- Free to play doesn't look bad, at least not anymore. Terra, Dungeons & Dragons online, etc, are free to play and decent titles. Plus they will consult a review or smt. You can't say it won't work, while it worked for many other titles.
- Prophesies is the best campaign to start with for beginners. Who cares that there are no this or that skills if you don't even know they exist. You again see this from a late-game perspective; and by late game people will buy the other campaings - dat is net de bedoeling
- The **** I care about some dude talking about hard mode to me when I log on first. If I enter an old community I am very aware that I'm at the bottom of the foodchain. And that goes for all games, including FPS, RTS, fighting games, etc.
- PvP is the only argument that made sense to me; but then again don't you have separated arena's, where people are restricted to the prophesies one?
Again it doesn't really matter, its not like any company is reading this, so don't fear ^^ Hope to see yall in the game soon.

Here's another idea.
We pull a campaign to try make people to buy and give away a Prophecies campaigns to friends or family coming Xmas. Imagine making that go viral and some 10000 people starting out in Prophecies in winter. Full districts and other new people to party. Even better, I solved your future Xmas shopping dilemmas, give away something that will last
And it might bring attention to Anet/NCsoft when they notice Prophecies districts are all full. After that people hopefully buy new campaigns.

F2P all campaign.. sounds very good to me. and yes it will pull thousands of people in at the same time. sure a few will leave but most will stay. and they all will buy stuff in the gw shop. like name change, char slots, costumes etc. so anet would make more money then with sell few gw games. and the best part would be that gw is really a f2p game and not like all other fake f2p were u have to pay to get your max lvl........
but yeah thats only dreams since anet zero care about gw anymore.......
