Goodbye Gw1 Guru
MaxBorken
I agree 100%. I don't think A little corner of gw2guru should be our destination either. I wouldn't know where to start. I have the computer and interweb skills of a stale potato.
But I am good in a crisis, and I lead and problem solve well. Right now we have a problem.
Also, wherever we end up, I would like to see our current mods re-instated as mods on our new home. To have kept us running for 11 years for free is staggering.

Maybe if we can find people with the skills.....

This makes me so sad so much about to be lost. I hope we can come to the right solution for the community but I agree being thrown in to a section of the GW2 site isnt right. We need our own space. Theres a reason most of us havent moved over to that game. Its just unfortunate that we have so little time to find a solution.

This site to me represents a lot of history this game has gone through, losing this site is like burning the last copy of the bible. There really hasn't been a site that a game has been linked too survive for more than 10+ years and still has active users every single minute of the day.
Guru will be missed when we instinctly open the browser and head straight for guru first even when you don't get on much. i know i will.
Rip gwguru.

I doubt they will give acces to the database, if it means potentially losing lots of users to another host.
It's a shame though that all those years will be lost without hardly getting a notice in advance (two weeks??). Hopefully some curse mod/guy/whatever notices this thread and realizes that most of the people here weren't waiting for an announcement that said here is a new website, make an account and move on.

Wait... what...? Damn... thats really short notice. A real shame to loose this great site after so many years, especially as it is the most active GW1 site around (with more posts per day than in Wartower for threads for both GW1 and GW2 combined).
So much history, so many laughs, tears (sorry, couldnt find anything more fitting ), frustration and elation.
If there are any great Forum programming gurus (small pun here) here, it would be really great if we could all agree to move over to a new site (with the help of the final days posting here, a little help from willing volunteers and the Facebook group for advertising after closure. The most important thing of course is that only one proper site is generated (The looks can still be tweaked later) and not loads of new sites seeded where no one knows which one will turn out the most active.
Ill be saving my important posts on a word doc for now. Anything else will have to be sadly lost in Nirvana once Guru shuts down . If there is anything you guys want to save (be it your own or something from another user (such as collections or epic items lost to the mists), then do it now!
Thank you admins and mods for your great work over the years and lets hope we can meet up over another forum in the future . You guys are great fun to be around, reflect about meaningless interweb pixelstuff which have meaning to us and goof off with in general.

Great work have been done here, and without any explanation, they announce they'll shut down the forum.
I'd really like to have a real post from Curse, telling us why they took this decision, is it a money question ? is it a new business plan for the company ? And what, if there are enough motivited people, can we do to keep this forum up.
As mentioned before, transfering all the data base on a new server, buy the domain are possible and not that complicated solutions.
Btw, the gw1 section on gw2guru is still not available...

I think that for many people, aswell as for me, the shutdown of GWGuru could be pretty much the end of GW1 aswell.
For me this forum was more a homebase, than kamadan, ascalon, lions arch or the guild hall ever could be. And with shutting it down there's no good place to trade, chat, and discuss anymore...
I'll of course keep my eyes open and see if there will be a good substitute forum or if curse will possibly transfer all data to gw2guru.
In case that happens I'll definitely stay part of this wonderful community...
But in case of a "small sub-forum" on gw2guru I think this would be the end of my GW career since a lot of my last aims for GW1 (purchasing specific items, having fun with the community, trading) will just be impossible to achieve.
_ _ _ _ _
Just in case Guru will shut down next days & there will be no good solution I might not ever have contact to some people ever again:
So at this point I'd like to say "Thanks a lot!!!" to the whole community and especially the admins/moderators of this site! You did a great job! I'll definitely miss you!

while in all the other sections theres a lot of nice (historical/ often outdated) information, the main part where people are actively using the forum for system's above mentioned points is ventaris corner.
missing all the historical info would be one thing but what would be worse imo would be losing the one central place for trading and the contacts who arent ingame all the time.
basically what the community needs is just a new ventaris corner, the rest could just as well be backed up somewhere but doesnt necessarily need to exist as additional sub-forums.
so maybe a new place for us doesnt need as many resources as guru now (just guessing lol).
or wartower will see its chance to take over and go global lol(i doubt it )

I won't write about what has to be done to preserve it. I agree with everyone who posted here. I am writing about what guru meant to me and I am writing it with tears in my eyes:
guildwarsguru.com.........
What a time we had... I started getting active in june 2015 and now in june 2016 they will shut it down. I bought items here which I thought couldn't exist. I received so much help. I met loads of new people. I made amazing friends. It has been a great run. If it wasn't for guru I would have probably quitted gw last year.
My life hasn't been easy (far from), but the last year it has taken a turn for the better. I am not saying it is all thanks to guru, but it has been a great part. Even my therapist gives you guys credit!! I want to thank everyone who made this site to what it is now and how we will remember it. I will miss every single one of you. I don't know what my future will be in Guild Wars, but it won't be the same without guru.
From the bottom of my heart: Thanks guildwarsguru.com.

Thank you to all of the mods for all of your services over the years. You have all done a great job and served this place well!
https://www.reddit.com/r/GuildWars/ is a fairly active guild wars site that people can check out if they are interested. It's not a place that is set up to replace guru, but I still thought I'd share it because it has interesting content and 6,500~ subscribers. I'm sure most people already know about it but there might be someone out there who doesn't. At worst, it could be a temporary beacon until another guru website appears.

A forum is under construction. I will announce here when it's ready. At this stage, it is hoped that it will become the full time replacement for guru, but keep in mind that it's being done by a volunteer team...
We're serious about inviting the current mods to moderate as the job they have done here is outstanding.
We're considering how to transfer any data across, but legally it remains the property of Curse.
We discussed full functionality as our beloved guru, and will have similar sections, better security (apparently), moderators, etc etc. Capacity shouldn't be a problem, and it will evolve over time.
Never give up. Never surrender.

I just saw a movie (again) last week ...that this reminds me of
Horton hears a who....though I know that that one ended on a very bright note, I hope that for 13 years worth of information, drama, excitement, sorrow, and everything else that this one ends as well or better.
(and yes, I would be more than willing to move my ban hammer to another weapons rack as I said in my last post).

Another issue with closure is when people want to come back and play gw again.
When they notice that even gwguru doesnt exist then it looks and feels a lot more dead than it may be, and the person will probably not bother with this game.
The way I see it is if gwguru is taken offline then you might as well unplug GW as it won't be long till even Kamadan will be a ghost town.

Hey, sorry guys. I made all the GW forums public, but I forgot to make the category public, thus keeping everything hidden from view. Doh! All of the GW forums should be available now for you guys.
Marty is correct in that I am the liaison between Guru and Curse, though ultimately I have no power in what happens here; however, I have always fought for Guru and I still do. I have asked to have the forum archived many times and I have sent another email today asking the same thing so we'll see how it goes. Fingers crossed.
Other than that, there is no way for us to transfer threads and images en masse, so we all will need to work together to manually transfer the most important threads. (If you are not the OP, please be sure to credit the original author.)

After checking out the original link now (which works), the forum setup looks similar to gw1 guru. I think we should just migrate there... for whatever my opinion is worth ;P. And to encourage that... I made a sell thread placeholder until I can put more there by saying I will sell 1 ecto to whoever takes b/o first for 5k . Gogo!

EDIT: NOT FAIR PLEIKKI.

Work is underway on a new resource hub following the announcement of this site's closure. It will be independent of Curse, and is intended as a site made by fans for the fans. It is intended as an alternative to having a corner of gw2guru for us, and will have all the functionality of this site.
We are working on recruiting the mods from this site too. We have one confirmed already.
Watch this space for the address shortly.

While I would be fine having two sites, I'm leaning towards agreeing that GW2 guru is likely a fine solution. It has the same structure and sections, just a different background. I haven't been able to merge my Curse account there yet but unless there are awful problems posting or something I think we might ultimately get the most activity there.
Referring back to being OK having two sites...I think we perhaps should have a second website just for archiving. A place where people's collections and achievements can be posted, and aren't at the mercy of Curse. A secondary site. But for auctioning, offering and requesting services, etc. I'm starting to feel like GW2 Guru will probably have more chance for activity(i.e. flow of new members).

as far as im concerned, gw2guru seems alright, with the gw1 corner looking pretty much like classic guru.
what bothers me is the overloaded site interface trying to be all hip with lotsa bs but it makes it slower.
original guru is nice and basic like a real forum thus superior but thats just my opinion

www.guildwarslegacy.com going live soon.
Keep in mind it's a work in progress, and will go live once a small technical issue is addressed.
Content will be added all the time, and it will evolve as we get more input.

just pretend its about 7 years ago and guru is slower than snot on a winter day in northern canada
(I think a good portion of us can remember those days...if not well, you are getting a taste of it then).
and yes, this is still my first choice, but seeing as I rarely get my first choices...I game for whichever is decided upon.

I agree it seems better than I thought it would, more to it etc. I still feel though like we are just thrown ..literally.. right in the middle of a bunch of GW2 stuff. Older players coming back wont know where to go...regardless of whatever option we take because for a lot of them Guru would have been the first port of call. I doubt very much that GW2 forums would be top of the list to look for GW1 stuff though. And it doesn't look the same

Goodbye GW guru. Totally didn't expect this.
I hope the wayback machine and other archiving sites do a good job of preserving images for a while so we can collect them and not lose GW history. Maybe we should use this thread to make a comprehensive list of threads that currently have a significant number of images still live? The banner says threads can be moved over... |
There are MMOs that are a lot older than GW ... and a lot less popular. Age is meaningless when it comes to forms of entertainment like this. In my eyes, gameplay always trumps bleeding edge graphical improvements. Up until the day it died a couple of years ago, I still fired up my IBM PC XT to play the original Wizardry games as they were meant to be played!

I believe we should at least go on GW2Guru, and maybe also use guildwarslegacy if it works well as well. GW2Guru provided us the original one, and is also on the same forum as the GW2 users, it'll bring many new Gw1 players if they see it's an active forum, and it could really be nice for Gw1
