Best Pet?
Sluggs
Not sure if its been mentioned but pets have the same stats as each other for each level, except the way you treat them changes the way the "evolve".
Something like "Hearty" pets get a health bonus and damage penalty while "dire" pets get a damage bonus and health penalty.

Perhaps you should look through the articles on this site.
The ultimate Pet Guide is one of the most extensive pieces of information on the subject. It answers every question asked on this thread, and many more.

There is little difference between pets. Disregarding how they evolve (which is a choice made by the pet's owner) pets have the same attack speed, running speed, behavior, etc. The only difference is that two of the pets (spider and dune lizard I believe) has piercing damage instead of slashing damage.

All pets anywhere are the same. Bears, wolves, dune lizards, linx, spiders, anything. They all start out with the same stats. They get stronger after time. The amount of beast mastery attributes will make them stronger too. All wild charmable animals are the same, just look different and do a different type of damage. (e.g. piercing damage or slashing damage) Just go read the pet section of guildwarsguru.com.
healthsoldier0570
I do not have a ranger, so I am not a pro on this subject. My warrior / ranger has a dune lizard, but I mainly use it so it can die and I can use "I WILL AVENGE YOU!" (IWAY). A health regen shout for every dead ally.
Maxiemonster
Choose anything except the Bear, since the Bear is the only pet really below avarage, as piercing and slashing don't differ much.
healthsoldier0570
No, the bear is just as good as anything else. I don't know where you got your info from, but it is way off. You can choose a bear if you want. Just make it stronger as you go.

I have a Phoenix now.. so I dont see how spiders are really top dog anymore...

You get them in under world after you complete a number of quest. You can pay people to run the tame for you. And the best thing is... they start at level 20

I think either the spider or the S&M moa are the two coolest. The phoenix was okay for awhile, but I really wish ANet had made them much harder to get, since everyone is going to get one.
shardfenix
All pets have been tested and have the exact same stats compared to other pets with the same evolution (hearty, elder, etc.) The only difference is how it looks. The best pet is the one you think looks the coolest.
twicky_kid
Do not go with peircing dmg pet. The same reason you don't use battlepicks for pvp. Shields up and other skills target specificly piercing dmg.
Some pets do have blunt dmg btw not just piercing and slashing. Warthog is blunt.

I Had a crab, piercing damage also.. was good fun with petfury build. I miss you Crabby Paddy.. *burps*

7 pages of misinformation until someone finally said go read the pet guide. Allow me to agree with that and to summarize a few points that guide makes:
All pets have the same health and do the same damage except for the bear which does less damage per minute BECAUSE of it's very slow mauling attack
And except for the type of damage the various pets do
The titles pets get depend upon how they are raised - as the pet guide will tell you in great detail but basically if it is playful and/or hearty it has more health and does less damage. If it is elder it does more damage and has less health and if it is Dire, it does the most damage but has the least health.
If you cannot see the title it is because you have given your pet a name. get rid of the name and you will see its title - assuming it is at least level 11.
Can we stop with the bear nonsense now? Please?

The best pet is obviously melandru's stalker. Because after chapter 3, those things will be rarer than post searing ascalon and it'd be leet just to have one. Besides, how could I ever leave leeeeroooy when he caught so many ************************* runners for me

Just to make a correction - none of the pets deal blunt damage, not even the warthog. My favourite, of course is the

but you all knew that anyway.
Plus the Fengxuan is pretty cool, too, I want one too bad I'm so attached to my Assassin's Emoa otherwise I'd have gotten one this morning

any pet is equally good.
damage wise a dire pet is better.
also. the bear has the attack brutal mauling, which makes the attacks slower overall. so it has a slightly lower damage output than other pets

For the person wondering where to get the elder wolf...southern shiverpeaks north of copperhammer (I believe), though the stone summit tend to tame them before you get there.
Spiders: there is more than 1 spider in the UW....do more than the first few quests and you will find this out (go to ALL the reapers and you will see others).
For now I have no best pet pick, but I am hoping to get one of those crabs in factions soon!! (am tired of listening to my wolf howl, though every pug seems to comment on his size---he is HUGE!).

I just got a Black Moa bird last night I can hardly wait to watch "I peck U Die" chase down runners in Random Arena
KamikazeChicken
I didn't read anything beyond the first page, so this most likely buried somewhere within.
Pets:
Lynx
Warthog
Bear
Dune Lizard
Wolf
Moa Bird
Melandru's Stalker
Black Widow
Elder Wolf
Snow Wolf
Black Moa Bird
Dire Tiger
Tiger
White Tiger
Blue Reef Lurker
Red Reef Lurker
Crane
Elder Crane
Phoenix
I hope that's the complete list of pets, but it's probably missing 1 or more. All pets have slightly different stats, and those can probably be found on guildwiki. The "best" is still entirely personal preference, so just choose whichever you find most appealing to look at.

In this thread, I saw two people who said they wanted to know the title of their pet, but because they renamed it, they feel unsure how to obtain the original title. There is a solution:
To reset your pets name to see the title, type in the following:
/petname
notice how you did not specify a name. This will reset the name back to the original title. For example, my pets name is Fluffy, if I reset it using the command bove, the name will change to the default "Elder Wolf", thus displaying the title. Hope this helps

I play a Warrior/Ranger with a pet in RA, I use Sever Artery, Gash and Poisonous Bite for -7 degen, so if they run away from me and my pet, they are still suffering a lot of HP loss and my pet can still chase them down via Haste. Me and my pet have KO'd alot of monks this way its so fun
Helll is for Heroes
Reef Lurker by far. I mean, who doesnt want a pet Crab?
However, im still waiting on my pet Lobster.

by far the best pet in the game is the black moa. The pheonix is meh, its very easy to get. Whereas the black moa is only attainable through a really annoying quest. I have had just about every pet in the game i could. I really wish there was a pet storage..i really do. i would have about 15 pets or so. my fav goes like so
black moa
reef lurker (blue)
moa
warthog
black widow
then the rest are boring and worthless

Agreed there is no best pet. Its a fashion thing.
Basically:
All pets use the same damage fomula unless they evolve to Dire/Hearty.
2-4 DMG, Lvl 1 pet
17-28 DMG, Lvl 20 pet
Dmg = Slash
Attack Speed = 2 sec.
Beast Mastery attribute modifies the attack bonus for pets.
All pets have the same armor and health unless they evolve.
AL=20 at Lvl 1
AL=80 at Lvl 20

looks exactly like moa birds but are afaik only available in pre-searing.

I actully consider the spider along with the dune lizard to be out right second worst pet (behind bear) at this stage in time in pvp, as often teams will bring "shields up" to counter ranger spike and such. And there is no such commonly packed skill to counter Slashing damage. This is ofcourse not including the factions pets
DFrost
I got a Black Moa for my warrior just because I didn't feel like training another pet to lvl20
Maria The Princess
i love my white tiger.... so pretty
called him Stupid Noob

I really really like the crane myself, to be honest.

There is NO better pet then another, I repeat NO better pet....All types of pets have the exact same base damage level, same base armor level, and same base health level. The only difference is type of damage given, most pets giving slashing damage, but lizards and spiders give piercing damage. The only other difference being attacking speed....and all of them attack at same speed except for the bear, which attacks slower...effectivley making this the WORST pet to have.
Now the type your pet is (i.e. playful/hearty, aggressive/dire, or elder) gives changes to their base stats. To train your pet to a certain type depends almost entirely on amount of damage recieved by pet, and partially on amount of dmg your pet deals in relation to yourself. If your pet recieves a lot of damage, it will progress to playful, and then to hearty at lvl 15. To train it to be aggressive/dire, use beast mastery skills that reduce dmg recieved to pet, and maximize beast mastery, adn lower your attack dmg, adn it will progress ot aggressive, then dire at lvl 15. Elder is a balance between Dire and Hearty, I have not figured out how to train it to achieve this however. As far as loosing the name (dire black widow, hearty stalker etc..for example) after naming your pet, this is false.....if you want to see what your pet has progressed to, you can simply reset the name by typing: /namepet, or /petname (both work) without adding a name behind it, and the name will be reset (i.e /namepet george, will change the pets name to george, /namepet , will then reset the name back to Hearty Black Widow Spider etc...).
Oh, and there are 2 pets you can get in Cantha that are already lvl 20's like the Spider in Tyria, those being the Black Moa Bird, adn the Pheonix

The Pet Guide and the Guildwiki article says no differences in pets. I am not disagreeing with these sources. (Still using my old Stalker)
But I recall an interview in which a game designer for GW said when asked about differences in pets something like, "Yes, but we are going to leave those undocumented for players to discover." Now maybe they changed that when the game was officially released, and maybe they didn't.

I actually prefer that over the spider or the black moa scheme. Using the method someone else posted here, I have trained two lvl 5 pet to lvl 15 dire in about two hours each.
With the spider, it's a luck of draw as to what type of spider you will get. And the black moa, until it's been tested, I'm guessing it's elder.
BTW, there are lvl 15 tigers that can be charmed. I have only seen the orange ones myself.
