Ettin farming can be a faster way to make money then even underworld with a little luck. In the past few hours of ettin farming I have come across: a superior - vigor, fire magic, protection prayers, and absorption runes. The ettins outside beetleton drop all the runes and since they are lvl 15 they are easy to kill. Here is my guide:
EDIT Added another map for the second leg of the runs by the ascalon settlement in the north kryta province.
Step 1: You will need a high level warrior. My build is as follows::
I have recently been using the axe build listed below, only I use cyclone not flurry, it works great. Thanks to all who posted
Lvl 20 warrior/monk
Attribute distribution :
Healing prayers: 8
Swordsmanship: 12
Tactics: 12
Skill Set:
1:Healing Signet
2:"Charge" (an altranate running skill can be used)
3:Sever Artery
4:Gash
5:Galrath Slash
6:Final Thrust
7:Flurry
8:Mending
The reasons for skills are as follows:
:healing sig, to heal when you are very low when 3 or 4 ettins are bashing away at you.
:"charge", to run by the avicarra and mergoyles at the start.
:sever artery, to start an etting bleading
:gash, to do extra damage because of bleeding and lower health by 20%
:galrath slash, to do as much damage as possible
:final thrust, to finish each ettin off
:flurry, to build your adrenaline very fast
:mending, to keep your hp in the high numbers.
The strategy:
Start out at Beetleton and head out the east exit. put on mending right away and head up the hill towards the east. There should be 3 or 4 mergoyles on your left, and 3 or 4 on your right, and usally an aloe that pops up when you walk by. You should only need to agro the left group. you should be able to just run by without using your running skills (they usually do from 0-2 damage per hit to me). As you walk down the hill into the pass with cliff on both sides there will be two sets of avicara. One wild and one scout. The wilds will shatter enchantment, doing a little damage but nothing to worry about. You continue to walk untill just when you hit the second group of avicara, you then charge (or whatever runnning skill you have) and rush right by them into the clearing between yourself and the ettins. You then re-enchant with mending and feel free to use your healing sig to get back in business faster. Now its time for Ettins! You should only agro 2-3 at a time, 4 if all else fails. If you take 6 you are probably in trouble (although it may be doable, depending on your items and runes you have on). You should start out by hitting flurry and slicing away at one untill you have enough to sever artery, then you gash, then galrath slash, then gash again, then galrath slash again, untill you have them nearly dead, then use final thrust and put him down. If you don't need to use final thrust it is better because you then can keep your adrenaline. You should be using flurry periodically to keep your attack rate high and your adrenaline charged quickly. After you kill one you turn to the next and continue. When you have cleared one group feel free to recharge and regen. Then its on to the next. There should be 6-8 ettins right where you find them first, then go up the hill or around to the right to find more, there should be from 5-8 more ettins depending on your spawn.
Now the beautiful part is that the ettins almost always drop "Ettins Pauldrons" so therefor, whenever you would get a purple or gold, it is a rune. Which happens MUCH more frequently then I had suspected when I started doing this, I usually get a couple purples a run and a gold rune every 1-3 runs.
Now when you finish killing all the ettins, don't just zone back to beetletun and go again.... No no no, that is what some do and that just wastes time. What you do is go to the east and there will be a zone there (see my map below). Once you are in the next zone, zone back and there will be a whole new group of ettins just waiting for you, and this time you don't even have to run through other guys. You can start right at the ettins, do a whole run, then just run back, zone-zone, and you are ready again!
Here are the maps:
Here is the product of 3 runs:

This thread is looking good. Although ur build isnt actually really perfect, and maybe this thread should be posted in the build section.

You're pretty lucky. I used to do ettin runs hoping to find sup vig and absorbtion but I usually found 1 purple every 1-2 runs and 1 gold every5-6 runs. It got tedious and boring. I might try to start back up again, maybe my luck will change.

Although there may be better builds out there, I never said mine was the best, I do this frequently, with no deaths, and it only takes a few minutes. If you have a better build please feel free to let us all know what it is. Until then, I will continue to use the one that has raked in hundreds of plat for me in just a few hours.

Personally, I would take out Flurry and replace it with Savage Slash to interrupt their healing signet...which they use very frequently.

Thats a good idea, but you would have to be fast on the draw to use that skill. I like flurry because then my adrenal skills are always charged and I can do this quickly and efficiantly. Besides. 2 swings of the swords takes all that health back they gained from the sig. Their sigs heal about 110 hp. The great part about when they use their healing sig is that it drops their armor. My regular swings do about 45 damage when they are using it. If I am using flurry its about 30, and I can get in at least 3 in the 2 seconds it takes for them to sig. When they are done they come out with only 20 or so hp then when they went in. I then have all my adrenal skills charged. Gash, galrath, final thrust, ettin down.
Every once in a while you get one of those ettins that sigs like constantly, but even then, it isn't a great challenge. Thanks for your feedback.

Awesome, I really appreciate this, I have some supa fine axes
and usually am an axe warrior, but for some reason I have always gone sword on these runs and had often wondered about using an axe build, this has been very helpful and I appreciate the addition to the thread. Lets keep this baby goin. Thanks again.

Here is an old build I've been using. Not to say it is mine, I think the concept existed for a long time. Everyone makes their own changes.
At work, so can't recall the exact point distribution. It's something like:
Healing: 8
Axe: 16 (super rune with helmet)
Strength: 8 or 9? (minor rune)
Tactic: 8 or 10? (minor rune)
Here is the skills:
Eviscerate {E}
Cyclone Axe
Executioner's Strike
Disrupting Chop --- for healing sig they use
Sprint
Vigorous Spirit
Balthazar's Spirit
Mending
You can take care of 6 Ettins easily and fast if you use the Disrupting Chop at the right moment. Otherwise, you can still kill them with no problem, just a bit longer.Good luck.
25 Jan 2006 at 19:54 - 11
ok, i use this build and it works GREAT. i have gotten 3 sup absorbs and 2 sup vigors in 2 days. here it is
Dismember
Axe twist
exicutioners strike
distrupting chop
healing signet
mending
battle rage (elite)
sprint
i dont have GW up cus im not at home, but i have something like this
8 healing, 12 axe, 13 strength (minor runes of axe and strength, strength helm)
oh yeah, and btw. if you havent figured this out yet, its an axe build =P
25 Jan 2006 at 20:03 - 12
3 sup absorbtions? Very nice. I've never had one drop for me. How many hours did you do ettin runs for to get 3 sup abs?
And on a side note - something very important to consider
12 axe[sword/hammer/bow] mastery is REQUIRED to make the most out of your weapon.
Any points spent above 12 will not give you as much return as points spent to get to 12.
Having 12 in your weapon is ALWAYS recommended, as per this wonderful article by Guild Wars Guru:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/content...nics-id674.php
25 Jan 2006 at 20:13 - 13
Here is a quick sample from the above post about being lvl 12, which is indeed very important and should not be over looked. You get nearly 10% greater damage yield from each point up to 12. This is from http://www.guildwarsguru.com/content...nics-id674.php by Guild Wars Guru.
Effect of Attributes on Weapon Damage Attribute
Lvl Percent of
Weapon Damage
0 35.6%
1 38.6%
2 42.0%
3 45.9%
4 50.0%
5 54.5%
6 59.5%
7 64.8%
8 70.7%
9 77.1%
10 84.1%
11 91.7%
12 100%
13 104%

Thanks alot for this thread and several builds!
25 Jan 2006 at 21:00 - 15
dude wasteing your elite on charge is just plain dumb no offence , u only need 1 boost of sprint at the start and 8 secs is good enough for me.
heres my axe build and sword build.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
zealous axe of defence
16 axe
11 healing
rest on strength
flurry (charge up all attacks then do them in the order for possible dmg spike to kill)
disrupting chop (on healing sigit)
evicarate
pentrating blow
executioners strike
vigerous spirit
live viocously
sprint
------------------------------------------------------------------------
and the sword one
16 sword
8 healing
rest on tactics
zealous sword of defence
flurry
server artery
gash (continued by Vim)
galrath sash (done on healing sigit for higher dmg)
final thrust (done on healing sigit when thier health about 30% or less)
victory is mine (elite)
mending
sprint
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
both are my best.
25 Jan 2006 at 21:23 - 16
I've used both zealous and vampiric axes in the past, and I find if you use Balthazar's Spirit, there is no need for a zealous mod.
Also, in my opinion Cyclone > Flurry for an axe build where you have 3 or more baddies around you, here's why:
If you're fighting 3, all of your adrenaline skills should charge between cyclones. Use Penetrating Blow or Eviserate to get the ettin nervous and use Healing Signet. Disrupt it and switch targets. You want to leave him standing so you gain adrenaline off him from the next round of cyclone.
You gain 3 health from the vamp mod every 5 seconds for each target, so if you are able to round up 10 (which can be done in beetletun sometimes) you're adrenaline charges like a monster - 10 strikes every 5 seconds which overflows your pool. Not to mention the +30 health boost
The other thing, of course, about a vamp axe is you're really doing 9-31 instead of 6-28.
And just to emphasize the importance of understanding the distribution of attribute points:
The %damage increase you get from 10 to 12 axe mastery is ~20%. The %damage increase you get from 12-16 is ~15%.
So, in other words, feel free to up your axe above 12, but do so only if not at the expense of other attributes that you are using.

thats actually the exact build i used to use when farming near the ascalon settlement except i threw in cyclone axe instead of flurry since usually all it takes is 1 sweep to charge it all and bonettis instead of penetrating since i didnt have a zealous mod at the time
regardless, ettin are easy...they are the reason i didnt have to buy more than 2-3 runes with faction

enough said

Ettins are generally very easy to deal with.
I use:
Sprint
flurry
eviscarate
ex strike
disrupt chop
cyclone axe
watch yourself
heal sig
and a zelous axe
flurry at all times while attacking the zelous mod outways the cost of the skill, and its seems to me that is speeds up your distrupting chop attack, giving you more room for error, cyclone in a group. watch yourself to reduce the attacks to next to nowt, healing sig if it all goes wrong
However I've not really got much decent from the ettins, just do it to unlock runes for pvp (if my connection ever sorts itself out enough to play PvP)
26 Jan 2006 at 00:29 - 20
Everyone complaining about the elite being charge. Chill its just a skill, and once again, ettins are easy, and if you are a sword build, you don't really need an elite at all. So put anything you please there.
26 Jan 2006 at 00:57 - 21
i am farming for 2 hours now and still dont have any runes(not even 1)
guess its my lucky day
26 Jan 2006 at 02:02 - 22
Don't bother farming tose Ettins, go through the portal to Ascalon Settlement and farm the Ettins near there.
26 Jan 2006 at 03:29 - 23
One thing I forgot to mention. Salvaging ettin's pauldrons (the ones that aren't runes) gives you either: 3-10 tanned hide squares or a leather square. I think it is worth bringing the expert or sup salvage kit with you, but then agian, I like stockpiling crafting materials.
26 Jan 2006 at 03:38 - 24
Ettin farming's definately easy enough. I farmed it for a few days and managed to pull a superior vigor, never managed a superior absorption though, I intend to! You can farm them with any class, actually. Not all that difficult. I regularly do it on my necromancer and mesmer, sometimes my ranger. If you have a sprint skill the fastest way to do it is to leave from D'Alessio and just sprint through the Tengu fields, takes half a second and BAM you're at the settlement.

They seem to drop with more frequency. Me and a buddy of mine farmed ettins for awhile, it was always more productive to run past the first group of ettins into Ascalon Settlement, and kill the ettins in there, then run through to a third area (can't remember name?) and zone, then just go back and forth through Acalon Settlement. The one's outside Beetletun DO drop runes....but they're fewer and father between.

Absolutely true
But, I always kill them because where else can you aggro a mob of 10? It's fun to have that many on you at once. Actually I got a superior vigor from these guys last night, right outside of Beetleton, and I had a superior smiting rune previously also

Thats a good call, I know doing it with a ranger is a possibility, and it seems like an MM would be easy as well. You could pick up minions on the easy guys instead of running through.

I have found just bouncing back and fourth between zones works best for me makes it less boring too.
30 Jan 2006 at 02:47 - 29
I always knew about this run but never got anything worth something, so I tried again today and on my first try got Superior Vigor.
I have you to get Sup Absorption but I'll keep trying.

I prefer farming Forest Titans, it seems to me they give better gold drops than Ettins nowadays.

I use sever artery, gash, galraths slash, flurry, bonnettis defense, sprint, vigorous spirit, live vicariously.
I can take out 5-6 ettin at a time without breaking a sweat. The trick with bonnetti's defense is dont use it in battle unless you really need to. After each battle I find the nearest Lynx and hit it once to aggro, then slap on bon. defense. 3-4 ettins I dont even use vigorous spirit I just use live vicarioulsy. Each ettin takes me between 8-13 seconds depending on energy. My sword has exec;ent dmg additions to it. With 16% vs ettins, 12% while enchanted, and customized for 20% adds 48% dmg when fighting ettins.
30 Jan 2006 at 17:25 - 34
Where exactly are the forrest titans? I do the Ettin run alot and pull alot of superior runes but they are all junk and the trader only gives you like 25g for them. lol
30 Jan 2006 at 18:20 - 35
Water/Earth/Wing Born Titans, They're called Forest Titans because they spawn in Kryta or Henge of Denravi from the quest Glint gives you.
30 Jan 2006 at 19:55 - 36
Awesome murder in china, thanks for shedding new light on this discussion.
30 Jan 2006 at 22:18 - 37
how on earth do you farm those things? I've still not been able to complete that quest after having tried with multiple 8-man teams
30 Jan 2006 at 22:36 - 38
You dont have to be a warrior to farm ettins in this area..I take my MM all the time through here and use the mergoyles and avicara at the begining for raising minions. I also use the overabundant amount of lvl5 lynx for bodies. Makes things very simple as long as you pack at least one dmg skill to start out with.
30 Jan 2006 at 22:42 - 39
people still get good stuff from this run? ._. not fair
30 Jan 2006 at 22:47 - 40
I seem to only get good stuff when I dont go a lot.....So now I'm down to just going every now and then when I need a little boost of money
