Anets Stance On Macros
Tainek
Well we all know that Anet (and everybody else) is against botters, thats simple, and very fair (i agree with it), but what is anets policy on macros for fair use?
for example, i would love to make some macros to do the following:
Teamsay:
Watch the Aggro!
Lure them
Experianced , Freindly Domination Mesmer LFG
I have equipped: Domination, Empathy.........(etc)
and so forth
used to do this back in ut2004 with the games built in scripting, was a vast aid to teamplay
does anet have a zero tolerance stance? or is fair use ok?

Zero tolerance.

Even less tolerance than they have for farmers..

Damn thats a real shame already had some great ideas (for example, one that presses F12, then enter, then my password, then enter easy character change)
i cant see whats wrong with it though, i'm not using it (and have no intention of using it) to cheat/gain an unfair advantage , im using it to stop anniyences in the game (why oh why do i have to logout to change characters :P)
spose i'll shoot anet an email anyways

You won't need to enter your password when you run Guild Wars
When you press F12 and log out, you will be brought back to the character selection screen.

without having to log in/out as it's pretty annoying most of the time.
I feel a poll of some sort coming along, ...

They're against bots?
Then shouldn't the never ending stream of monks leaving Aug Rock...end? It's not like they're hard to catch, we all know where they are and what they're doing.

You have a point Keyote but proving what "some" of them are up to is another story, .
And not all of them are botters, i for one still farm there some days when i need some
cash, although saying that, some of them do stand out more than others!...
Sometimes it's very hard to tell whats human and not, ...

there are still very many good uses for macros thought, we shouldnt ban kitchen knifes because somebody might get killed (who will anyways), why should we ban macros because some people bot (who will anyways)

and how many PUGS use or even know of teamspeak? (plus with a group of 8, less needless info on the channel the better, dont want everyone talking at once
also, binding /dance /wave ect , lazy yes, usefull yes (i use them a lot)
still havent seen a counter argument to using them (aside from anet says, just say no!) , only inferior solutions
oh and btw, somebody in england tried to get it passed as a law (knifes) a few years back, needless to say, it never found its feet

and go to GW.exe it opens up the game.
chris_nin00
Right click on the guild wars icon. Go to properties... and look at the location...
I think that'll do it
I have it set up that way too.
The good thing about this is when you log off, it goes to the character selection screen so you don't have to log in again! MUAHAHAHAHHAA.

Right click your GW shortcut and where it says target, add the writing that is shown in the above posts...(and of course put in the password) and when you start Guild Wars, it will go straight onto the character selection screen (or Connecting... if it needs to)
I just tried it, and thanks for the info! BTW, this is safe isn't it? No one can obtain my password through this? (Sorry for my computer noobiness, I'm just making sure my account doesn't get robbed :P) I would suspect not, but I don't know.
Thanks,

the password is stored in plaintext in the file name, so anyone using the computer has access to it, also makes it more vunerable if a malicious program tries to access it (but they'd more liekly use a keylogger, more chance of getting a credit card number ect on the side)
4runner
ive tryed macroing keys for target calling and various other commandes to my mouse, problem is that the dam thing wouldnt work right or wouldnt work at all sometimes, was wondering if anet might of had something to do with that! anyway un-installed the macro software!!
Stock again!
Stock again!
Tainek
you'll need to add delays inbetween every action, have you tried this?
4runner
uuuuuuuuuummmmmmmm! Interesting i will give it a try!
Thanks Tainek!
Thanks Tainek!
MoldyRiceFrenzy
it would be nice if that could work out, but they hate bots so ya...

Generally all third-party unlicensed programs are a no-no. Unless Anet were to implement macros directly into the game engine itself, you can expect them to be pretty strict on their policy.

Thanks for the login tip, being useless at that sort of thing it was a great help.
Just an addition to it can it be used to enter the user name as well as I have 3 accounts.

What about ones generated by something like this? [ http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/input/7a71/ ] -- It's a craaazy keyboard with the ability to handle up to 18 programmable macros @_@.
I was thinking about getting that keyboard [my overly-expensive super sleek LED backlit keyboard's LED's just went out, +1/4 of them don't light up properly because of spilled soy sauce ^^;;], would the macros it could make violate anet's bot/macro detection system?

exactly how does writing 3 macros, one for logging me into a different account with the touch of 3 buttons give me an unfair advantage?
or a macro which says /dance on touch. oh noes!
of course they can be abused , but anyone who would abuse them, will abuse them anyway
a macro is not by definition an unfair advantage, coming back to the kitchen knife, if a knife by nature a leathal weapon? depends how you use it
entire point of this is, would anet ban a player for having a /dance macro?
Caleb
The answer to that question is abundantly clear in the EULA. Any outside program/macro used to effect in game action is a violation and can lead to permanent removal of the account. They do not leave room for "degrees" of violation in this regard, and I highly doubt would look to see if you were only using a dance macro rather than a farm macro.
If pushing the buttons to dance or login is enough of an inconvenience for people that they would risk losing their entire account, god help the world.

I use a mouse-like device to set up certain binds for chat. I have all the /emotes bound to this device & a cpl of phrases. I do not use it to gain a unfair advantage over others or to manipulate the game in a nefarious manner for my own financial gain.
This said tho... I can see the potential for abuse is high with such a device. I understand ANet's stance. While I am responsible with such a device, others may not be.

click the shortcut which takes me all the way to the character select, click the character i want and i am in the game.
what is so bad about that?
as for losing the account Anet let me do it using their own setup so...............?
Gorebrex
I think thats using the shortcut (Your drive letter):\(Your GW folder)\Gw.exe -"Your password" Correct me if Im wrong on that, but that isnt really a macro, a macro is used to perform actions and/or display text in chat(not an "end-all" definition, but servicable). Like if you press 1 button, and it targets the nearest enemy, casts a particular spell or attack at them, then calls for help in chat.

There is a big difference between modifying your executable to include your password, and utilizing a macro serverside once you are connected. Gorebrex hit it right on the head.

keep up the anti-botting anet, bots ruined diablo 2 and endless ages

I dunno if it's just my paranoia, but that seems highly insecure.

Just bought a Logitech G15 keyboard. It allows the use of 54 macros via its "G" keys. I have two accounts and with the push of one button I can launch GW and log-on, so no need to re-type my e-mail address every time. I also use it to cast my enchants for my farming characters as well. I like the idea of using simple macros just to call out what build I'm using at the time to my teammates.
The keyboard does not let me record true macros, only a series of keystrokes.
EDIT: I have two accounts = two different e-mail addresses

Keyboard macros and editor macros are used interactively on a graphical user interface and text editor, respectively. These allow short sequences of keystrokes to substitute long sequences of commands, and can provide a simple form of automation for repetitive tasks." From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macro#Keyboard_macros That MIGHT be a macro!
Edit: There's never been a need to retype your email every time
