Luxons or Kurzicks
gangguard
For GW Factions there are two sides which will you be?
The Kurzicks are an ultra-conservative and highly religious culture whose socially frozen society worships the status quo. In fact, the world of the Kurzicks is a mirror of the petrified forest in which they carve their beautiful homes.
The Luxons, on the other hand, are a wild nation of seafaring nomads who have traded in their ships for magical walking machines that traverse the jade ocean. As a group, the Luxons are a walking advertisement for the Darwinian social order -- only the strong survive.
In Roleplaying terms i suppose Monks, Necs (maybe) and maybe some Ritualists (although im not) should go for Kurzicks. Very religious
Rangers, Warriors, Assassins Ritualists (kinda wild) should go for Luxons. Cuz they are war-hearted and wild.
Havent decided for Mes and Ele
But my Fave class is Ritualists and i decide to go for Luxons. Wat do u think

I will make a Rit/Ra and go luxons
Vermilion Okeanos
Well, in role playing term, that won't work at all... Because then, your character won't have personalities. Aidan sure wasn't a wild one (personality wise) while ranger also are ritualist.
This basically mean both side can have all 8 classes without much problem in role playing.
Anyway, I need to see their town first, before I decide. The classy, pretty, cool, awesome looking (to my personal liking) will win my vote.

I've never been a fan of religious or conservative groups. You'll probably end up seeing me in the Luxon camps more often than not.
Hell Marauder
Well, maybe this sounds a little too materialistic, but the side with the best, coolest looking armors wins my vote, regardless what their religious/political views are.
Mordakai
I'm personally leaning towards Luxons... "seafaring nomads who have traded in their ships for magical walking machines that traverse the jade ocean."
I mean, how cool is that?
Does anyone else think the deck is stacked against Kurzicks? I mean, who wants to play the conservative, frozen-in-time element?
(not to mention, they sound like Cossacks http://www.cossacks.kiev.ua/)

Its going to be a Kurzick Assassin for me. I like to compare that faction to the "Lawful Neutral" alignment in D&D. I'm not sure if thats how it will turn out to be but I'm hoping it will.
Theus
Well, if your in a guild(Like most people are) I'd say you faction will come down to a vote between your GuildLeader/Guildies.
Considering having a guild consisting of all of one faction would be alot more effective.

Ranger and Kurzicks.

Early indications point towards Luxons = Alliance and Kurzicks = Horde.
Just sayin.

Luxons = Rebellion
Kurzick = Empire
So. You want to be a Jedi or a Stormtrooper? Far as I'm concerned, no choice involved XP

Notttttt really, Ensign.
Anyway, in the website kit on the GW website, they have pics of both of the sides.
Here is my opinion on the Luxons:
Costume looks pretty sweet, they look very Chinese or Japanese.
Here is my opinion on the Kurzicks:
They look a little weird. They look a lot like Necros in grey tormentor armor.

If that's what your saying, I agree.
It'll be interesting to see how Anet implements this so people don't just join the winning Faction... after all it's not like WoW, because any profession can join any Faction!
LaserLight
That could be done by charging people a rather exorbitant amount of money to switch factions. Switch, not join. That way ye can change up if you find out you made the wrong choice, but flipping it every other day to match current trends would be financial suicide.

I wanna see them try and tank that $#@%
I will now go on to continue to enjoy my dream...
Lady Lozza
My guild has had a small discussion on this, and I think the majority of us wanted to go for Luxon.

I'm saying that all the carebears zerg the faction with the most mass-market appeal, all the assholes end up in the other faction to kill the carebears, and the 'winner' depends on whether or not the game rewards player skill or sheer numbers.
As of right now it appears that the Luxons are the carebears and the Kurzicks are the assholes.
I'll play for whichever side provides me with the most fresh meat.

Or possibly, 'omg side X is doing better than my side, quick let's change sides to X so we can be ubahhh!!1'-side zerging.
I don't really find either of the factions very appealing, religious nutters or warmongering nutters.. Guess I'll make my decision once there's beta weekend with the factions in play, or when the final product ships.

I think giant killer robots far out ways the religious cult lol.

its kinda stupid really, i mean, making each side a political side was a bit dumb of ANET. With all this anti-game sentiment at the mo, especially in america (Jack Thompson *cough*) that all seems to be coming from the far right its hard to imagine most gamers putting themselves in the conservative camp. It seems to me that Luxons will be the larger faction, but possible not the strongest. It also seems that the faction you chose is linked to this allegiance thing, which is linked to guilds. All very confusing.
I wil be the Luxons for one good reason. Anyone ever see Farscape? i did, and it wasnt bad, and luxons was the name of a tribal style race in that series that also seemed to live by the principles that they will in GW.
Coinsidence? we shall see....
*ducks away in blinding flash of light and smoke*
ps. sorry bout the dramatics, but a last line like that cant just end with me walking out stage left now can it?

Obviously, most people are gonna choose Luxons. How can a petrified forest EVER compete with magical walking machines?

Kurzicks for me. Since everyone wants to join giant robot pirate faction, most of the skilled PvPers are going to go to Kurzick to get some easy kills. I plan on joining them. I likes my faction (the spendable kind).

Meh, I'll play Luxon and either adapt or die.

I agree with the comment that Luxon = Alliance, Kurzick = Horde. This is purely from a popularity/population standpoint, not saying that these factions resemble each other stylistically.
And for those of you who played Dark Age of Camelot, Luxon = Albion (the Arthurian realm with the most mass-market appeal) and Kurzick = Midgard or Hibernia (the underpopulated Norse and Celtic realms with less mass-market appeal).
In my experience playing both DAoC and WoW, the overpopulated realm tended to rely more on strength in numbers and less on skill. As a result, if you gave me a random team of 8 albs and 8 mids, I would bet on the mids to win most of the time.
Assuming that you always end up with equal numbers of opposing players per match in Factions, it means that Luxons will see "no opposing team joined" more often than Kurzicks. So Kurzick players will get more action.
If the "large PvP battles" or "PvP explorable areas" in Factions permit unbalanced numbers of players, then Luxons will outnumber Kurzicks most of the time. So Luxons will be able to relax and win through sheer numbers, while Kurzicks will be forced to play smarter to win against greater numbers.
Pick Luxon if you like them from a role-playing or aesthetics point of view, but pick Kurzick if you want to to have more targets to kill.

So true... 'flashbacks to EQ Tallon Zek'... and unfortunately it doesn't normally work out overly well for one side. If you're an 'underdog' type like myself you're simply more likely to get zerg'd outta there. But I'm hopeful yet.
Be interesting to see how they do this, it's also interesting to note where MMORPGs implemented this, you usually could see the content from both sides by simply playing on another server (or even allow same account same server different guild/different side). Here all your characters are in one guild and thus undoubtedly one side. One server... not sure how that pans out.
You could have a second account (say family) be another side, but they couldn't be in your guild nor I'm guessing group with you? That was another oddity of the early implementations to bring up EQ team server again, ugh Pandemonium... the 'Pandas' (think carebear item whoring guild) really brought the ugliness of how a poor implementation can ruin a game - those keeping to their sides/teams couldn't hurt the turncoats. Meh.
I'm still kind of surprised, from early descriptions didn't sound like some PvErs would have to side-up, now their latest is pick a side and have at it.
Can't wait to get some SOLID reports on how this is shaping up.

Maybe this speaks to the true PvErs who don't have to be embroiled?
Thus it might be more for those who want to see all the content and avoid the craziness, or even a way to start with the content and later pick a side?
If so might make a lot more sense than starting the game/early into it/you guild already going one way and you're locked into a limited experience.
Me? Right now I'm happily the head of a teeny tiny guild so I guess I have my options open before I dive back into PvP - might work out well. This thread actually might have single-handedly made me decide to keep it around

I think this is a "replacement" for worlds at war we have now with Hero’s Ascent / HoH and not going to be as intrusive as people things for C2.
You have only two factions, like there is with three "servers" used to determine equivalent of favor in C2 for control of area's like FOW / UW. Of course server will still help determine C1 worlds at war.

As for Jack Thompson...I'm waiting for some intelligent, occult-oriented gamer to hire the blasted exorcist already.

Permission to be a neutral asshole carebear please ?
To be honest I don't give a monkeys about all the factions stuff. Just lead me to the pve and the story and don't let the pvp get in my way or affect my game in anyway thanks.

know how you can only enter FoW and UW when your country has favor?
Well guess what! In Factions, elite quests will only be accessible to top tier guilds...
I hope Anet changes their mind on this, or I'm mis-reading something...
(This is from the new article posted, there's a thread discussing it)
It's on the official FAQ too:
Quote:
Guilds can join together to form guild alliances. Allied guilds share Alliance chat and can visit each other's guild halls. Alliances can also gain control of cities and towns in Cantha by participating in Alliance Missions, which give them the ability to trigger events and gain access to exclusive areas. |
Here's the other thread to discuss:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...d.php?t=116476
Anyway, here's a different description of the Factions from that article:
Quote:
Canthans: Players were introduced to the Canthans in the first release. The Xunlai Agents (account storage NPCs) are from this nation. They are generally wealthy merchants and traders. As a group, Canthans are very cosmopolitan and worldly. Their country is lead by an emperor, who inherited the title from his father. Kurzicks: Highly religious and made up of talented crafters and artisans, this culture resides in a petrified forest (the result of Shiro's death wail 200 years ago). Their buildings are highly ornate and masterfully crafted out of the gigantic fossilized trees. In general, these people respect artisans, titles of nobility, and the established order of things. Luxons: Once a seafaring nation, this nation has had to adapt since the sea has been turned to jade (the result of Shiro's death wail 200 years ago). They travel across the petrified water using huge magical walking machines. Because of this transition, they have become a mostly nomadic culture, using easily portable materials to make shelter able to be picked up and moved at a moment's notice. As a group, this culture respects strength above all else. The Luxons and Kurzicks have a tremendous hatred for one another. The reasons for this stem mostly from a dispute over resources. Each side currently controls lands and resources that the other would like to get a hold of, and as a consequence, they are at a constant state of war. Players will be able to ally with either one of these nations, thus creating a system in which guild wins advance the cause of one side or the other, changing the political face of the world. |
And the summary changed to "talented crafters and artisans" vs. a "culture respect[ing] strength above all else".

I am willing to bet it would be faction exclusive area, kind of like national favor, but in faction.
So if a faction won say ToA, then that faction alone would be able to enjoy the resources.

A-net would probably find some way to balance the two sides, so that the Luxons don't massacre the Kurzicks or something. I am personally going for the Kurzicks. Giant Robot Walkers don't appeal that much to me.

Luxons i bet here for the guild alliance, We the Mystic Shadow Soliders will be the Enorcement of luxon rule, just like a Roman Legion =)
Lady Lozza
lol Mostly I'm just going where my guild decideds to go. Sounds like it might be pretty pointless to not have your entire guild in the one faction, so if my guild goes luxon, like they've been talking about, I go luxon. There would be nothing worse than having a line drawn down the middle of the guild that we've all worked so hard to build.
Besides, there is nothing really inherently good or evil about either side. Sure the idea of religious conservatists doesn't sound all that good to me, but remember that often "a highly religious society" does NOT go in hand with "appreciation of art and culture". There really are only a handful of occassions in history where a rich culture of arts and crafts has existed side by side with highly religious (conservatist) society.
