It has been banned and that's OK. No one should ever give anybody the possibility to make uncontrolled casinos, as they are (like lotteries) the easiest way to make money. Even if you didn't cheat on your "clients" then by giving them a 40% chance to win you'll end the day with a 10% profit. It's the law of probability - there's pretty no chance at all to lose anything in this business - if you have some reserves. =)

Ditch the gambling - period. I like the way other RPG's have handled economy and market saturation...
1. Weapon/Gear decay. After a given amount of time, weapons and gear will start to decay. Initially, I see people raise a stink about this, but in Post-Searing I'll find I'm turning most weapons I have no use for into crafting material out of impatience to sell them via Trade chat.
2. Allow for bounties. This is the fun one! People place bounties on other characters for gold. I've seen this done on old telnet games like Legend of the Red Dragon. If your bored and have a lot of cash to blow or you want to earn a lot of cash but with more of a challenge than a piddly "/roll 20" I think bounties would be choice entertainment.

I personally hate Hate HATE gear decay. I realize it can be good for the economy and I could tolerate it for that purpose but it would make me at least a little bitter.
Bounties CAN be fun, until some rich punk decides he doesn't like you and keeps a constant bounty on your head for the rest of your existance and you spend all your time from that point on running from bounty hunters instead of playing the game. Bounties would DEFINATELY need major limitations to even be considered. Like one person can not have a new bounty on him once one is collected for at least a real-life week or something).

On gear decay: I think it would once again be better to those selfish and greedy players than to the average person. They greedy layers would still sell Sigils like for 100K gold and be able to buy the best of the best when it comes to equipment, while all the other poor bastards would have to work hard as hell to get anything good.

What I wanna know is how a rich punk becomes a rich punk, my only guess is they've got all the gear and weapons they want and just stash the rest of it.

not sure if this has been put forward but....
couldn't they add a gambling channel? too crazy? at least it would clear out the spam problem if it could be switched off.
not that i gamble on GW as i am extremley poor
its just that it seems to me that it is removing freedom from players and that isnt good.
not sure about this one but couldnt they also make all casino's pay for the use of the channel on a weekly basis to ensure gold is still sinking
after a few times round the block i have found that this game seems to lack an element of danger (with the exeption of HoH/arenas) and gambling is just another method in a long line of ways to get your kicks. is it really so bad it is worth banning?

It's like that stupid type of making money through offers sounding like: "Send me 1$ - sender number 100 wins a computer game." -.-
Give me 1K gold, the 50th person to msg me gets a max dmg Fiery Dragon Sword. ;-)

WoW was the most recent game to have a casino spam problem. Like Anet, they made the act of gambling against the rules of conduct and banned anyone found in violation of the new rules. WoW's /random functionality was never changed in any way, the casino spam advertised in towns was eliminated almost immediately, and everything worked out in the end.
When WoW banned casinos, the minority of people cried and screamed that the sky would start falling and mass cancellations would ensue. Out of that minority, the majority of them were the ones who ran scams, spam bots, and alt accounts to push their casino advertisments. I see the same thing happening in this thread. Anet has put their foot down to stop the detrimental effect of casinos, and the dealers, addicts, and wanna-be forum warriors are scrambling to get on the soapbox about it.
This issue will be dead and gone within a week.

It's just like with Counter-Strike. People have been whining during the 1.1->1.3 update, then the (very short) 1.3->1.4->1.5 update, they have been against the 1.5->1.6 update (this even led to a series of pirated servers being set up, though they are slowly dying their natural death), now people look down on the 1.6->CS:S update... The only things constant through all these update-riots were 1. the whining of the would-be majority of players (actually only a few narrowminded guys, who knew how to stir up the community) and surprisingly 2. the number of players playing C-S. The very same thing will happen to GW - there will be lots of updates (hopefully) and expansions (hopefully again =) and many people will whine about this and that but when the sun has set we'll end up with roughly the same amount of people playing the game (or rather: an even greater amount for the time being =)

The random number generator was meant for 2 things. 1) a fun little knick-knack, and 2) a way for parties to resolve disagreements.

Hehe - it's be great to have a /makesex <player> command. ^^ I mean - the female (and male for their part, though I'm not an expert on that matter =) characters in GW are sexy enough. ^^
I wonder why they always keep their underwear on - this should be fixed. ^^ Or make real items out of it - like Insightful (instert your joke here ;-) Underpants of Fortitude or Poisoner's Bra of Enchanting. ^^
P.S. Just noticed that this would favor female characters because of the panties/bra combo - unless male characters got better boni on their underpants - or if they were upgradeable and the panties/bras not - just like staves and wands - geez - I think I'm going to far. ;-)
"Hold on - I must upgrade my underpants" ^^

I'd like to point out that breaking a TOS or EULA isn't a "crimminal offense". The police aren't going to come to your house and arrest you for selling a SOJ or Sigil on ebay. The police have better things to do, and it's a civil matter, not a crimminal one. There is a difference, ya know. Main reason why OJ is free, yet lost everything except his NFL retirement/HOF pay.
ANet's reach only extends to your account. Sure, legally, they might be able to take you to court to sue you for breach of contract, but I'm sure it would cost them more to file the paperwork than to simply ban your CD key and make you pay them the 50 bucks for a new account if you want to play again.
I also applaud the banning of casino's. Now, if ANet can do something about the whole sigil thing....

I say this is a good thing. Something like gambling needs to be controlled so this sort of abuse doesn't occure (like it is in real life). Hopefully, ANet will introduce NPC casinos because we all know we need money sinks badly.
Oh, and the abuse of player casinos isn't bad because it's gambling, it isn't bad because it's someone losing "virtual" money...it's bad because players are ruining other players gaming experiences, it doesn't matter if the other players aren't wise enough to see a scam when it's in front of them, they bought the game and they have the right to play it without some jerk ruining it for them through scams and spam. *breath*
If you don't understand this, then most likley you are either one of the scammers, or would scam someone in the right situation.

About bounties: How would bounties work if there's no PvP in PvE at all, apart from the arenas?
I chose to play PvE and avoid the arenas because I simply hate PvP.. Bounty hunting is something I always hated and to me it pretty much shows how much you can do. You can give out money to attract someone to kill the player YOU can't kill at all.
(Either that, or you're a lazy bastard)

Not exactly on topic, but I need a place to laugh about this. My roleplay Mesmer was deleted for some... rules and conduct shite, I don't know. He's got a perfectly sensible name, and I actually roleplay the character so I don't say offensive bollocks in towns or anything, so I was stumped. Then it hit me, I gambled a lot. My Mesmer is a compulsive gambler. If someone walked past me in town and I had nothing to do, I'd challenge them to a six-sided die roll. Or even a game of rock, paper, scissors. I would love to do a coin toss (far more sensible) but Arena really dropped the ball on that one, in my opinion. Really dropped the ball.
Like I said, not entirely on topic, but I think it's laughable that Arena banned gambling. I had a blast challenging random bypassers whenever I was bored out of my skull. Hell, most fun thing I've done in Guild Wars is lose my AL30 boots. I had no more gold and lost a bet, so I had to hand my boots over to be salvaged. Hah. Better type of acquiring riches than wrestling with the ****ing trade channel, anyway.
