What is wrong with people in this game?

The major towns are the hubs of the economy and of people playing. Sometimes you'll get lucky and someone nice will answer a question or two. In really big major towns (Ascalon, Droknars etc) you'll find most people there doing business. Either trading, selling, or looking to buy stuff. Other towns it's usually people looking to form parties for farming runs, quests or missions. Unfortunately theres no set town to do such things as ask questions. However, Pre-Searing Ascalon can be a nice place, usually find alot of friendly faces there willing to help you out.

I ALWAYS say thanks... even if it was a disaster. Because we can learn from disasters too.

And I 90% of the time get a reply of thanks.

Often that has led to new guild members for my guild... or just adding someone to the friends list. One recent horrible disaster had the entire team laugh about it, stuck around, re-tooled our skills and tried again. We conquered that mission mightily the second time.

I find that GW is very karmic. If you treat folks nice, you get treated nice in return. I got help as a noob (and in some classes, still am a noob). I recently gave away 3 ranger minor runes to beginning characters. Just gave them away.

The next day, I saw an offer of a very good sword that would be perfect for my warrior build. I asked how much, the seller just wanted to pass it along at the Trader's price of 136. I saw the sword, it was perfect, I gave him 300 for it because it was nice of him to offer and I could afford it. See? Karma.

Marginal, Mav has good points. Also, as you continue on from 9th lvl, you will start to get to some really, really hard missions and quests. You'll find a more serious player and ones who know that helping you.. helps them. Cooperation becomes more stressed by the designers.... and sure, you can do it all with henchies... but it is often better to do it with other players!

I think we see this largely because the game requires no credit card to play. Yes there are mature younger gamers. Yes there are older gamers who are morons. Still, the majority of younger gamers just find things amusing that most of us don't (if I see one more penis/breast drawn on the minimap i'm going to cry). Unless the game goes pay to play it will always be that way.

Much like the diablo games you have to find a group of good players who are good people if you truely want to enjoy the game.

Personally, though, I don't answer questions in open channels because I talk on vent to friends while playing and usually dont pay attention to chat.

I always answer questions in town, and give advice to everyone and anyone... BUT, half the 'players' just spam in town and the other half of the 'players' dont even have their chat up! And then there's me helping out everyone : )

Has anyone noticed that at the crystal desert, if somebody dies, then they instantaneously leave... I've been stuck at Elona's Reach for at least 2 days and I havent even reached the dunes of despair...

(btw if someone could would you help me out at elona's reach? and help me reach the dunes of despair... I cant play today because my parents *glare* took the game away for today but, tomorrow I can play... I am not immature!)

And on the topic of monthly fee's my parents dont let me play any games with monthly fee's and I cant afford it because I dont get any money so I want INSANE waiting for GW to come out because of no monthly fee's (I got really mad when I realized that I had a 'patrol trip' to DC riding a plane from FL to DC on the day of release ...

[QUOTE=Candyman963]New player == "politically correct" term for someone who has not played the game long and thus does not know much about it

n00b == Disparaging remark directed at people who, regardless of the actual amount of playtime, seem to be much better at making other players hate them than actually playing the game effectively. General things to look out for: frequent unnecessary swearing, failure to effectively use any known language when communicating, inability to cooperate with others and accept constructive criticism, constant whining, other generally annoying and immature behaviors

For some comparisons, see below:

Wow, I did not know this topic would get so many posts on it. Well thank you for everything that had advice for me, and also to everyone that gave their oppinion. So at first I complained that I was not getting help in game, and I guess I could just ask a few simple "new player" questions to the community here.

1. As a player (level 9 W/N) should I attempt to do all the quests I can find, or should I pick the ones with the good rewards (good skills, weapons, etc.)?
2. How many towns are there (The ones that I can travel to via the map)?
3. How come I get 0 xp for killing some monsters?
4. And can anyone point me in a direction of how my attributes should turn out as a W/Nec?

Thank you in advanced to the people that answer my quesions.

1: It's up to your playing style. I try to do all the quests and missions that I can find in an area before moving on, and find it more rewarding as a result. Some people prefer to blaze through the game as fast as they can.
2: If you go to the main Guild Wars Guru page, there is a link in the menu called 'areas' or something, which lists most, if not all of them.
3: Eventually low-levelled mobs aren't really going to be much of a challenge for your hero to take down anymore. How much can you really learn from killing low-level Devourers over and over again? That's how I think of it, anyway. The bigger the level gap, the less experience you get. I'd like for them to get rid of 0exp baddies, though. It makes life tedious sometimes.v
4: Can't help you on that one, sorry. With my warrior character I've focussed on strength, tactics and swordsmanship, but it depends on what you want him/her to do really. And I've never been a Nec so I don't even know what attributes they have, sorry.

Last night I asked around to find out where an elite was located. Well...someone wanted me to give them a good bit of gold for a url list of elite locations. (which i already had looked at, duh!) I ended that conversation with a "f**k and you jerk" /ignore.

Completely unbelievable...but not the first time something like this has been seen in GW. These ignorant jerks are the exact reason why I fear joining a guild.

This game has more of a single player feel to it. Single player with "visitors." So..noone really gives a shit if you like them tomorrow.

Actually Matt as far as generalization goes, It is a known fact that teens tend to be more immature and rude than older players.

That said, it is also known that "maturity" doesn't come with a number attached. So yes there are quite a few younger players that I'd rather team up with because they are good at the game and don't have immature, leet, or just plain arrogant attitudes.

Following in that line of thought, maturity again doesn't come with a number and there are some so called adults I think need to seriously re-evaluate themselves and how they interact with others.

Anonymity is a wonderful thing and it gives people an incredible freedom of expression that they might not otherwise enjoy on a daily basis.

But just because a person CAN act like an retarded elitist a$$hole, and say things to others that would make their parents wash their mouths out with soap regardless of age.. Doesn't mean it should be done. That is where maturity starts kicking in. And it is a nice thing when a young person realized the difference and tragedy when a theoretical adult can't seem to grasp the concept.

SO if you happen to fall into that group of younger folks that act more mature than is generally expected of your age bracket.. I didn't mean to offend. There should be more like you

And to the older people that act like a typical 12-year old.. Please grow up soon. You are giving all of us adults a bad name..

My best advice would be, when you find someone who is cool and plays mature then add them to your friends list right away. Cling to the people that you know are not idiots and eventually you'll find you're really in quite a large community.

I try to help everyone when possible, but since my guild uses teamspeak I don't usually look at the chat line when I'm in town. My advice would be to look around for a guild you like and join.

A note to the people who are demanding gold, answers or help. If you want someone to help you, ask nicely! And personally I hate leet speak or whatever it's called and will not answer or invite to team up anyone who types that way, I just figure that they are immature and not someone I wish to know.

At 19, I think of myself as a mid aged player of this game, not some 12 year old punk and yet not a golden oldie. Most of the people i meet on this game are coherent, intelligent, forthcoming... but then again i have 0 tolerence for the absurd, so i try to avoid them as much as possible. The game i came from before this was exactly the same way, and eventually the community split into 2 groups, the mature vs the immature from our point of view, but they always said the "1337" vs the "n00bz".I honestly hope this game goes down the same path, I'd love for some clear cut sign that tells me that i have a higher chance of getting along with a person or if i will most likely hate them outright. It was nice to log on and know exactly who your allies were, and who were your enemies.

I've been fairly lucky I suppose run into more friendly's than idiots. As far as the 'pay server makes for more mature crowds' I can't agree with that as WoW has been by far the worst experiance for the 'n00b this, n00b that' chat I've ever seen. Could just depend on luck or unluckiness I suppose but I see this is way more of a mature crowd than WoW ever was, and it had one of the highest monthly fees around.

It's so true about groups spliting. No matter how many times I say nice job and great group after a tough battle, everyone remains silent, and the second we get back to town/outpost at least 4 people leave by the time I'm finshed loading. The other 3 remain quiet until they see a new quest then say "you wanna do so and so?" then of course leave. Even people who say I'm on their friends list haven't contacted me once since to talk or play together.

I think that's the main reason why I perfer to solo and explore, it's alot easier to deal with henches then bad players.

The best I heard here was the suggestion to join a good guild. But... When do you know it will be good? You cant leave if you chose a guild thats great in pvp but with no one who helps others around in missions.
And something has changed these weeks: When I started I noticed lots of players around creating teams. Now when I'm in a teammission spot, everyone is hanging around and on asking who wants to join a mission team hardly anyone answers.

True, maturity sometimes has nothing to do with age, but with how you treat others. A person can be a high paid professional in real life but a perfectionist who cannot tolerate any mistake or any question to his/her authority, and would come across just as bad as an impatient 12-year-old. So the real key is patience and tolerance for others. Just keep in mind that playing GW is about fun, not just next towns or mission goals.

As a general rule of thumb I treat other players how I would like to be treated, I help where I can and so forth, go with the karma post mentioned earlier - it does work, most of the time. Unfortunately though with so much useless spam in local chat I mostly turn all of it off (local, trade and emote) and I am sure a lot of other players do as well to escape the mind numbing drivel, and then we miss any genuine questions from new players. It is kind of a vicious circle.

It's also annoying when everyone disbands the party as soon as we reach the next town... They dont even say 'bye' or 'good game' except for some people who I added to my friends list...

[Edit] I think that A-net should add a 'help' chat channel for all the people who need questions answered...

I was in Ascalon one day and someone there was asking to get him to "Perdition Rock" so i told him it was impossible and he said i want to go the cave, then i told him there was no cave in Perdition Rock, then he was like WTF dude did you ever played this game OMFG. I stayed polite and im a European so that is our nature, that is was at the end of the game and then he said you are an idiot, stupid fagg. Now other ppl started to tell him that Perdition Rock was at the end of the game. It turned out he wanted to go to Anvil Rock to the "Ice Tooth Cave" and of course everyone started to the laugh. Then i said to him i would like an apology for the names you have thrown to me and someone else said don't bother its just a kid. This is just one of the many "stupid idiots and immaturity" i have experienced so far. But this doesnt keep me away from helping ppl in game, answering their questions etc... though.

I dont care WHAT game you play..look at all the SCAMS in WoW or EQ..just as many A-holes, they just have more players, thus probably a smaller ratio of JERKS. I think once GW gets going a little better, hopefully it will, we will see this go away. I mean the DAY GW came out stuff was on Ebay.

I have had my OWN experience with a BIG JERK called Wave something...he wanted to do bonus and the mission with us..so when we got to one point he TAKES off without telling us whats up. He then DIES of course so we run all the way around to res him...a few minutes later he completes the Bonus says.."FU SUCKAS" and LEAVES...I was pretty hot about it.

I go OUT of my way to help people, I have done most missions behind me ATLEAST 10 times helping others. I get more experience, PLUS the missions are EASY back there and I can knock most of them out QUICK as long as they dont surround me as I am a Me/N. I think it is fun to be the know it all on a mission...cause ahead of me I am as lost as ANYONE...

I also admit that this is my FIRST game like this. I come from a FPS side of gaming. Since GW was free, I tried it..AND LOVE IT...BUT I WOULD NEVER PAY FOR PLAY...just not gonna do it, even for Galaxies

Another thing I think I saw mentioned before is that with the business model they are using, they don't have to cater to people to keep them playing, so they can actually put their foot down about a lot of nonsense if they choose to.

Like with the casino crap and the banning of offensive names and things. They already have all the money they are going to get out of a person until the expansion unless someone buys multiple copies. So screw up and you are out $50 and a great game and they are well rid of an ahole.. unless you spend another $50 to try again with a new account.

I'm sure ANet doesn't want to turn this into another D2 as far as all the problems that went on there.. and they've gone a long way towards preventing a lot of it just with the game design itself. They've also shown themselves to be proactive as far as making changes for the better, although some people want THEIR priorities fixed first.

Be patient and I believe things will get better all around.. never perfect.. but better

Amen, iv seen people leave groups after we finish the bonus without a word of warning, and unless your group did some heroic stuff in the mission and you all unanimously agree instantly to continue on, it will dissolve within 10 seconds.

Im guessing the competitive nature of the game, plus the fact the game world is aimed at you or your group and not the 'community' or 'playerbase' as a whole etc. like in some games, means a lot of people just dont care a whole lot of the time that other people are playing, apart from the group they need.

Not everyone is like this though, and the masses of naked dancing bodies and streams of endless spam mean there are people looking to be social, chat and trade, and muck around. Problem is the spammers are annoying, the social naked dancers make you worry if theyre any good, and the unsociable hardcore players wont speak to you

You know I really don't know how much worse GW is compared to all the other games. Ultima, Lineage, Star Wars, WoW, EQ. They all have the jerks and selfish folk out there and this game is no different. Guild Wars just tends to be alot more competitive and that's just the nature of it. Sure people do PUGs (pick up groups) and then split after a mission or what ever but you know what that's just how it goes. People want to get on with what ever they have to do, whether its sell their junk or take care of the baby in the next room. It's not like people are any friendlier in real life. You don't turn to the guy next to you on the subway and go, "Nice riding with you, give me your phone number and maybe we can ride again together." Why should you expect any difference in a game in which you don't even get to see who the guy next to you is. As a side note though when you start getting further into the game that requires more intense team work and there were moments when it came down to the wire you'll get hte "Gj crew" or "Thanks for the team" or what ever it might be but in early on through half way of kryta you won't really be stressed much to finish and so there's not much to congrat one another about. As for answering/helping out new people I have mixed feelings about it. Half the questions that are asked can be found in the Online Manual or the manual that comes with the game if you bought it at a store. People don't bother to read anymore and just assume that someone in the game will give them a crash course. Back in the day games use to come with novel size manuals and very few games could be played without at least going through most of it. People are getting lazy and expect others to do it for them. I went back to ascalon with my level 20 warrior to hand out some weapons to folks who needed them and I was invited into 3 different groups all looking for the same thing "Will you rush us to the next area". I felt rather insulted that after putting an assload of time into getting to where I was that that many people didn't even want to bother working through the game normally.

Sure I might seem like one of those jerks, and I'm fairly sure someone reading this is like "what an ass!" But don't get me wrong. If its a legit question thats not in the manual or not like "can someone take me somewhere" (just an example) I'll take the time to answer it even through the spam, although I'll only answer it once, if your not watching your screen that's your own fault. But I would say that the game would be alot better if some folks were alot less "nice" and made people get off their lazy digital butts and explore.

To be perfectly honest, every single online game that i have ever played has had about the same proportion of annoying irreverent players in it. The internet allows a great scope for anonymity, and anyone who feels the need to regress to their childish self can do so without the fear of recrimination that exists in real life. Guild Wars is no worse than Diablo 2.

However, these irrespectful people will, however, listen to certain things. When in towns, i state in the main channel to use the trade channel to sell items. For some strange reason, (maybe because i use punctuation) they listen to me, and i can feel free to mute trade chat and be blissfully free of all those trade spams.

Finally, if anyone needs help ingame, and you don't feel the need to speak like a cat is on your keyboard (OMGWTKDJGA !!!1 NO0BZ) then i'm happy to help - Ingame name is Jia Xu. however of course, the best way to enjoy the community of Guild Wars is to join a guild, as generally guilds won't accept idiots. Have fun out there!

First, we're ALL still noobs. Second, I spend a lot of time in towns, especially in pre trying to answer questions under the names of Roscoe Himple and Edsel Torque (my resources pharmers). I know the questions are repetitive, but with the release of the Prima guide, I think they will subside. I also type two address in replies, www.guildwars.com and www.guildwarsguru.com if people are willing to listen. I have personally guided dozens of players on quests, and showed them good pharming areas to have the resources necessary to improve their armors when they cross over (bring hides, wood planks, iron ingots, spider webs, glittering dust, scales and bones kiddies. Even if you don't need them, they bring good prices in post). There are players who don't even understand salvage and ID kits yet, and for that we all share blame.

The game shipped with a MINIMAL manual, hence most of the kids playing have a tendency to ask rather than explore the game or explore the web for answers. What fries my wrinkled old butt the most are the players trying to buy quest items instead of finding them on their own. If they only want to rocket through without understanding the world and finding items to improve themselves, then let them wallow in ignorance.

Seeing level 3 and 4 characters in post is another pet peeve of mine. Why anyone would want to go to the Dark Side at that level is beyond me, but, personal preference trumps experience everyday. Let's hope more of the senior members here spend some time in pre rather than amassing fortunes in post.

And one last thing, stop dancing and start playing the game. The experience will benefit you in the harder areas of the game.
