Stolen drops... Can anything be done?

The drops should work the same way they do at the end of the mission when items that drop from the boss are dealt with. A little screen that appears on the right of your screen showing the items you got. You can pick and choose what you want from them, or just ignore it entirely. That way, whatever you don't want you can just ignore and it gets thrown back publicly.
Although, I still feel the current system is somewhat unfair. Time and time again I play with others and golds, purples and the like don't drop for me. I get stuck with the collectable items... whoopee. Or when multiple items get reserved for the same player, it becomes rather frustrating. Mainly when it's a player who isn't doing very much to aid the party, it isn't fair that all the good stuff drops for them. I could just be saying this because I'm bitter that the HoH gave me a Gold Gladius instead of a Sigil...
Also my advice to be to everyone is never play Diablo II if something like this bugs you. You have players in that game running third party programs that pick up items the instant they drop. Good luck every accumulating value playing publicly in that game. Be thankful there is a reserve system of any kind in this game.

WOW! This shows the average IQ level of players in this game. I get put on an ignore list because of a comment I made in this forum. That's funny. I appreciate you put me on because the feelings are mutual.
As for Maelindar's comment:
"I think everyone agrees that stealing items is a bad thing. It is clearly a somebody exploiting the system. Danfrancisdo is just trolling. The 5 outrageous responses on this topic are the only posts he has made. He just wants to stir up trouble."
Wrong. I just registered for this forum yesterday so of course I only have 3 posts.
Lastly. I do feel this is ridiculous. Listen. The developers have made it all to easy to become resurrected in this game. Don't you think there should be some penalty besides the paltry DP already in place? To just have your drops go public when you die is nothing. In addition, we are lucky the drops are even reserved for anybody. How in the hell, if this was more life-like would that happen? This is the FIRST RPG I have played that reserves drops for people. This is an annoying part of the game. I love how the game desides who gets whose loot. Where is the role-playing here??????????????

Given a choice between the system as it is now, and having drops NEVER become public, I would prefer drops to never become public. I strongly feel this is a better way to do things, unless someone has a nonobvious point I've missed.
It's sad that this would be a better way to do things. Hopefully there's an even better option, but it seems like it would be a trivial change on the part of ArenaNet to make drops never become public. And it's not like you can't still pick it up and drop it so others can have it if you want.
Eventually, it might be nice for there to be some UI elements that let the player force an item to be public, but I'd rather that not happen automagically.

so you advocate giving better items to people that don't want to fight? If all drops were public I'd just sit back until something dropped and go grab it while you were fighting...leaving you to die. But what do I care I got the purple drop before anyone else did....

I've never had a drop stolen...I generally only party with people I know...and I put people through a screening process before I join a group with them. I have a very outward personality...it's harsh and blunt and it offends most people. IRL and ingame...if it doesn't bother them and they "lol" it off...then generally they're the type of person I want to be playing with. So I'll make fun of warriors for being meatheads or being retarded...and if the warrior takes offense, then I don't want to party with them. same for all the other classes....essentially I don't want to party with anyone that takes the game too seriously.

Now wait a minute guys. Lets say you get a Yellow drop, and die before you can pick it up?
What if the surviving party doesn't have a res?
The 5 minute timer allow them to pick your stuff up so it's not wasted.
What we really need is a system that allow you to *release* an items ownership! I get this all the time. I get a drop I dont want, but someone else does want. I can't take the time to trade it to them during action, but I would gladly release my title on the item.

Player's who steal items like that are @$$holes.Plain and simple. If the drop is for somebody else leave it. Cause next time, IT WILL happen to you. I'm recording all these player names, if this happens when they.re in my group I'm giving their items to the players who they scammed. Consider it repayment for his theft.
Yes, there are nice players like me out there.

That doesn't address the original issue - The person picked up his stuff alright, for the sole purpose of keeping it themselves because it WAS a rare item.

I do this all the time in FoW - Pick up Glittering Dust, Drag & Drop.....its free game at that point. No hassle of trading etc. and there is ALWAYS time after a fight to do something like this or trade.

Can't believe you're still arguing about this. I mean, this is obviously a design flaw.
Items should NEVER become public, unless the player in question leaves. If he doesn't want it, and someone else in the party does, then this other person can just ask for it. Up to the rightful owner to decide to charge the other person for it or not.

If some lowlife scum starts trying to blackmail you with "Give me the [whatever] or I'll [whatever]", you just know they'll map out as soon they get it anyway, so tell them politely no and why such behaviour is unacceptable, and take the consequences if they drop out. Not much else you can do. There's a reason governments don't pay ransoms.

Secondly, if a member of your family died, would you be happy with all their posessions becoming 'public domain'? Would you be alright with people coming to the funeral and making a mad dash for any jewellery? Would you have an issue with people breaking into that person's house and taking their items because they were 'public domain' now?
I think you would.

I ran into something similar to this twice yesterday. In one team, a fellow had to go AFK for 20 minutes, just before a Shard dropped for him. While 5 of us went on to continue a part of a quest, two stood at the site waiting for the drop to time out. Later, when he came back, he was a good sport about it, and everyone laughed. Fortunately.
In a different group, a purple dropped for someone who was dead, and all but one of our monks died in the battle. The monk waited for timeout, grabbed the purple, then rezzed, saying "get over it," etc. A couple of battles later when the monk died, one other player and I convinced everyone else not to rez, even though it likely meant not finishing the quest (as it happened, the quest was broken anyway). Wasn't a happy scene and lots of ---- dashes were flying. But it made the point.
The heart of the matter is the intent. If you willingly take advantage of someone's state (i.e. game death) for your own gain, it's unsportsmanlike and dishonorable. It's hard to legislate sportsmanship, but it should still be the code we strive for.

Really if this happened to me, I'd give him the undieing spam treatment. Since you cant get Anet to do anything about it.
Same thing almost happened to me, whole group were freinds, so they decided not to rez me because I had a max shadow sheild on the ground. Lucky for me, they rezzed a ranger who was a randomer also and came to me with her signet.
So to return the favor, we walked around the whole area and aggroed everything.
This caused them to use enough Racist/Vulgar/Offensive language to get them banned. But I wasnt sure how to report them.

If they were making this game like real life:
- You'd only get on character slot.
- You wouldn't be able to choose your character's sex, hair color, skin color, height, or name, though for a price you could change your character's hair color, hair style, or name.
- You would have to pay for food and water on a regular basis and would have to spend a third of your time watching your character sleep.
- You would not auto-heal and conditions would be permanent unless removed by a spell.
- Once your character died for any reason, your character would be deleted and your account would be banned.

On one hand I think this whole issue is overrated, we are only arguing about it today because it was a gold storm bow, and that's it.
I've got some of my drops stolen in UW before, and while it is nothing as impressive as a storm, hey, it is still stuff that I'd probably like, but ultimately at the end of the day I just remember those guys as turds and not play with them anymore.
Having dialog boxes and fixed reservation systems are just plain silly. Come on, suppose a gold storm bow dropped for you in UW and the monk died while he is rezzing, what then? Everyone got booted out of UW and Balthazar just got a 500 platinum offering. Does that mean some convoluted new system will have to be built just to handle this rare occurence?
I'd hate it if it happens to me, but hey, when I'm under focussed fire I know one thing, RUN and hope the enemies will retarget and get healed up again before charging.. instead of happily standing in that chaos storm/absorbing damage/etc
When you are dead, an item should not time out.. That's it, there should be no other provision apart from this.
If you are alive, and fail to pick an item up, then it should be fair that it is fair game after a while.

Ok listen, if a gold storm bow drops for me and everyone dies, thats tough luck.
If a gold storm bow drops for me, and I could have been rezzed, butthe idiot decides not to because he wants the item. That is the differnce between you dieing on Fear Factor because your rope snapped just after you won the 50 grand, or the person you were competeing with holds everyone up with a gun so she can get the 50 grand. What do you do afterwards? You have her arrested, but in MMOGs there is nothing you can do about it, because of the lie rate, from people who want to scam the company into giving them a free item.
Aristotle
Yeah i have seen this happen in many cases/shapes/forms like the others have stated no matter what you do people will abuse/cheat the system.

On aother note, the item should only be public if your connection dropped.
Also an experience with me, a perfect purple Fiery Dragon Sword dropped for me and i died before I could reach it, the Mo (with res might i add) zoned out to town! Mind you, this is back in the first week the game came out so that was a really rare drop and could have made a few plat off of that drop. This is where they need the "Unclaimed Items Box" for any zone.

of course for all the people that just warp by map, they should be omitted from any of these personal/party items since it would defeat the purpose of team play and they'd just keep warping in and out with new parties until they find what they want.

If they are still alive and leave the loot then too bad for them. I have actually grouped with someone once who didnt want any white loot. So he just picked everything up and dropped it again for anyone to pick up so we didnt have to wait for the timer, but he didnt want his bag to get full. Everyone else left with a full bag

I'm a little confused... what makes a drop changed from (yours) to public?
Do u have to be dead for it to change?
Because before I never thought ppl could take ur stuff, but when i was in Fissure, I saw a Gold item that had my name on it and then someone picked it up....so I had to do a dbl take......maybe my name wasn't on it...

The items have a timer on it (5 mins I think but dont quote me on that since I pick up all my loot ) after the time it up it becomes public and anyone can grab it.

the best way to avoid getting screwed is to avoid Yard Trash at all costs. Get a good guild, with teamspeak and a decent website, even if it means you have to be in "recruit" status for a while. Five years ago I ended my days as a lone pubber and hooked up with a rock solid clan. I will quest with henchies over yard trash any day of the week.
MechaStyle
Lol Yard Trash :P I like doing missions and runs with guildies and all, my guild is usually there for me if I ever need anything. But it shouldn't be that you have to solely rely on guildies to do anything. It's true that being in a decent guild will make life easier for most people, though. There's always people to talk to and ask for help and advice.
I occasionally like using pickup groups and making new friends, sometimes they even end up joining my guild. It is a hassle to keep things organized, but it can also be pretty rewarding. In the case of the original post I lost a rare storm in the process of being in a pickup group, but it's not a huge loss and I won't let it keep me from doing my thing.

On the other hand there are some cool players out there. We had a group in the underworld for HOURS. Towards the end, four of eight remained, and we were fighting the worms, almost to the statue. We got wiped up by the statue and the last person had no rez, but a max damage blue dragon sword fell for the monk. She told him to port and she would grab it and meet him in the toa district 1. Sure enough, there she was waiting to give him his sword. Cool group of people and when I was lfg later they picked me up. Sometimes people don't understand doing the right thing can be alot more rewarding then being a ahat.
To all the run out and grab the item thing; so when I am playing my healer monk it's ok for me to not heal you and grab my items? I did that to one player who played like that. Kept running off in fights to grab his loot so I told him if he didn't stop that I would do the same. I stopped on the way to heal the others as he slowly died while I grabbed my junk drop. "O, I am sorry you died but I had to grab my loot!" He left the group and we finished the rest of the mission alot easier then when he was there due to the fact no one was paying attention to him while fighting. I can be a big ahat too but not to those who don't deserve it. It's not to smart to tick off your healers during a mission. They can pretty much control your fun level for the rest of the mission and if thats a tool I have to use to play daddy to six year olds... then so be it.
